...Low 80s By Thursday Afternoon...

BREEZY AND COOL TODAY: A deep upper trough over the eastern third of
the nation will bring breezy and relatively cool weather to Alabama
today; we figure most places will see a high in the mid to upper 60s,
about 7 to 10 degrees below average values for mid to late April in
Alabama.

There will be a few cloudy periods during the day, and even some
outside risk of a few showers, mainly north of U.S. 278 (north of a
line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden). The southern half of the
state should enjoy a sunny day with a high around 70.

SUMMER PREVIEW COMING: The entire upper air pattern over the nation
will do a big flip flop in coming days; the upper trough over the east
will move on, and a warm upper ridge will build across the Deep South
late in the week and over the weekend. This will bring the warmest
weather so far this season to Alabama; we expect a high around 80 on
Thursday, followed by low 80s Friday, and low to mid 80s over the
weekend. Humidity levels will be creeping upward as well, giving us
the first real summer feel in 2009. For now it looks like the warm air
aloft associated with the upper ridge will keep us dry; any showers
over the weekend should be few and far between.

RACE WEEKEND: Hard to believe, but this this race weekend at
Talladega. Warm and dry weather is the story for the Talladega
Superspeedway, with partly to mostly sunny days and clear nights late
in the week and over the weekend. We are projecting afternoon highs at
Talladega in the 80 to 83 degree range both Saturday and Sunday.

16 TORNADOES! National Weather Service survey teams from Huntsville
and Montgomery were able to identify 16 tornado tracks across the
northern two-thirds of the state from Sunday's severe weather event.
Within the Birmingham NWS county warning area; the most significant
tornadoes were found atop Straight Mountain in Blount County, and on
the Alabama/Georgia border in the Phenix City/Columbus area. Both of
those tornadoes were rated EF-2 on the enhanced Fujita scale. There
were two tornado fatalities in Alabama; one in Priceville, in Morgan
County, and the other in the community of Asbury in the far eastern
part of Marshall County.

ON THIS DATE IN 1967: Deadly F4 tornado strikes school at Belvidere,
IL at dismissal time. High school students were being loaded onto
buses as the twister ripped directly through the bus loading area. The
elementary school students had already been picked up and dropped off
by the buses. 12 of the buses were overturned by the winds. Students
were blown through an adjacent field and makeshift stretchers were
formed from plywood from nearby houses. 13 students were killed and
300 injured at the school. Another school bus was destroyed near
Harvard IL as the driver and students took shelter in a ditch. The
Belvidere tornado was part of an outbreak of 48 tornadoes that day
across the Upper Midwest.
