...Busy Weekend...
BUSY WEEKEND: The Magic City Art Connection will transform
downtown's Linn Park into a blend of incredible artistic talent, as
well as great food, live music and entertainment. The event runs
from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. today and Sunday. If you haven't been to
this event before, you definitely have to check it out. In addition,
tens of thousands of race fans are descending on Talladega for the
spring edition of the semi-annual racing epic. The weather for both
events will be absolutely perfect. Let's look at the forecast.
ON THE WEATHER MAPS: If we go up to about 18,000 feet in the
atmosphere, we find a weak ridge of high pressure. This ridge will
remain in basic control of our weather through much of the week
ahead. A strong upper trough is rotating through California. This
trough will weaken as it rotates northeast over the next day or so,
but a broad general trough will remain over the West. At the surface,
a powerful anticyclone will maintain itself over the Atlantic east of
North Carolina. Moisture will flow into the Mississippi Valley in the
clockwise flow around the anticyclone. A battle zone will set up
between the trough to the west and the ridge to the east.
THE WEEKEND: Sunny days and clear nights will prevail through the
weekend across Central Alabama. It will be warm, with highs in the 80s.
Lows will range between 58-62.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The ridge will continue to try to deflect rain to
the north of Alabama. But there are signs that the battle zone could
drift southward enough to produce showers across Central Alabama as
early as Tuesday. But it looks like a better chance would occur on
Wednesday as the boundary tries to settle into the northern half of
the state. Temperatures will continue to be warm, with highs in the
80s. Lows will be in the 60s. The boundary will lift back to the
north on Thursday as a surface high noses into the eastern Gulf of
Mexico. This should set the stage for a warm and dry weekend.
VOODOOLAND: I have to be honest with you. The intensity of the
subtropical high concerns me. It this anticyclone continues to remain
strong over the next several weeks, we could be in for a long hot and
dry summer. It is too early to tell what the specific effect will be,
but let's hope that a drought does not return to the state.
ON THIS DATE IN 1986: A major disaster occurred at the Chernobyl
nuclear power plant in the Ukraine as flawed Soviet reactor designed
combined with serious mistakes in judgment by the plant operators.
The result was an explosion and fire that resulted in a release of
about 5 percent of the reactor core. Most of the release was composed
of dust and debris near the site. Lighter materials were carried by
the wind over parts of the Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and even to parts
of Scandinavia and Europe. Thirty people died as a result of the
accident, and extreme increases in thyroid cancers have been observed
downwind of the site. If the wind had been westerly, the release
would have targeted the city of Kiev, which undoubtedly would have
resulted in many more fatalities. Chernobyl is the only case where
radiation related deaths have occurred as the result of an accident at
a commercial nuclear power site.
