...Relaxing Weather For Awhile...

QUIET AND COMPATIBLE WEATHER: The Alabama story is the story of dry
weather and warmer afternoons as the week goes on and a pleasant
weekend ahead. Another cold front was pushing southward across the
state this afternoon. To be more truthful, we should call it a cool
front, but it was bringing a fresh supply of dry and relatively cool
air into the state. Radar actually showed a small area of light rain
over West Alabama moving south. Much of that is probably not reaching
the ground. Clearing weather is expected across Southern Alabama
tonight, then mostly sunshine each day through most of the weekend.
Some of the colder North Alabama valleys could drop into the upper 30s
tonight, but after tonight it will not be as cool. Last night our
33/40 skywatcher at Scrougout in NE Etowah County reported 0.03 rain
mixed in with just a little bit of light sleet around 4:00 this
morning. Most of the low temperatures last night were in the 40s.

By this weekend, another active low-pressure system will swing out of
the Rockies across the Central Plains to about Oklahoma by Monday
morning. This will not bother Alabama, at least through the weekend.

TALLADEGA RACE WEEKEND: Looks good. Dry warm weather, humidity not
too bad and high temperatures Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the low
to mid 80s.

ELSEWHERE IN THE BIG WIDE WORLD: Parts of South Texas still have a
major drought. At Corpus Christi, only 1.26 inches of rain so far this
year--about 19% of what they would normally receive at this time.
Victoria has received only 2.86 inches. Looks like the final season
snow for Spokane will be around 98 inches, which is 51 inches above
the average. Hot in Southern California. It was 100 yesterday in Los
Angeles and Long Beach and 101 in Pasadena. Death Valley was the
hottest in the country with 105. Selected low temperatures this morning:

6 below zero at Shishmaref, Alaska
28 atop Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains
24 at Stanley, Idaho and Yellowstone National Park

No severe weather threats in the good old USA for the next couple of
days. The same system that pounded Alabama over the weekend dumped
1.80 inches of rain on New York City in the last 24 hours, 2.12 inches
at Newark and 1.36 at Atlantic City.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Interesting to note that Little Miss
Molly is not the only dog afraid of thunder. Sheryl Frank, who has the
Appalachian Mountain border collie rescue, says that every time it
thunders her border collie runs into the bathroom and wraps herself
around the toilet. She wedges between the tub and the toilet. Her
other dogs jump into the bathtub. Fortunately we did not have any
thunder at the Molly house Sunday. On our long walk yesterday
afternoon, the big black dog, with the crooked tail that always points
toward Anniston, jumped out of the hedgerow and surprised us. Both
dogs ran three circles around me and then Molly begged to be picked up—
she was afraid. That little girl actually tried to kiss me while I was
holding her. Won many points with me.
