.Upper 80s in Central Alabama is late April. Near record warmth.
Temperatures running some 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Readings
more like late June than late April. It's great weather for this
weekend's big events, including the races at Talladega.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: Some high clouds from a passing disturbance to our
west will serve to give the sky a little character at times this
afternoon, mainly over southern and western sections. Temperatures
will rise into the upper 80s this afternoon. Tonight, as the
disturbance swings by to the northwest and the air aloft diverges just
a bit, a few showers could form overnight, but they will be light.
Skies should be sunny again by morning, with partly cloudy and dry
conditions on tap for Sunday. Highs tomorrow will be in the middle 80s.

RAINFALL SURPLUS DWINDLING: Most of Birmingham�s rainfall for
this month came on the 12th. Since then it has been very dry, with
only 0.49 inches falling in the following two weeks. This has eaten
significantly into our meagre surplus. It is now down to 0.76 inches
at the Birmingham Airport. How are other Alabama cities faring?
Montgomery is down 1.85 inches. Huntsville has a shortfall of 2.52
inches. Anniston is down 1.60 inches. Tuscaloosa is just under three
quarters of an inch short. So, we could use some rain. What are the
prospects?

LOOKING AHEAD: The subtropical high off of the coast of the Carolinas
will build southwestward, and keep the encroaching upper trough at bay
through Monday. Little disturbances rippling through the trough will
allow it to edge southeastward and the battle zone between t he
systems will edge our way. This will mean increasing clouds on
Tuesday, along with a chance of showers by afternoon. Those rain
chances will increase during the overnight. If the boundary slowly
sinks into North Alabama on Wednesday, that could allow for periods of
rain through Thursday. The best rain chances look like they might
occur over the Tennessee Valley, but hopefully some would be
experienced over central parts of the state as well. The boundary
should retreat northward by Friday as a warm front, setting the stage
for a warm and dry weekend. Showers could return Sunday night, with a
big storm system due in here May 6th. We will have to keep a close
eye on that one.

TORNADO OUTBREAK TODAY: Storm chasers are positioning themselves
across the Plains today in anticipation of a significant severe
weather outbreak. They are poring over data in places like Elk City,
Oklahoma, and Canadian, Texas and Shamrock, Texas, A strong upper
trough, upper level wind max, ample low level moisture and a dryline
are expected to result in a classic severe weather setup for areas
from the Texas Panhandle into western Oklahoma and southwestern
Kansas. There could be some large tornadoes, especially after dark.
The Oklahoma City metro area could be under the gun this evening.

ON THIS DATE IN 1880: A violent tornado, at times up to 400 yards
wide, swept away at least twenty homes in Macon, Mississippi. Pieces
of some of the homes were found 15 miles from their origin and 22
died, while 72 people were injured. Loaded freight cars were thrown
100 yards into homes. A bolt of cloth was carried for 8 miles.

ON THIS DATE IN 1986: A major disaster occurred at the Chernobyl
nuclear power plant in the Ukraine as flawed Soviet reactor designed
combined with serious mistakes in judgment by the plant operators.
The result was an explosion and fire that resulted in a release of
about 5 percent of the reactor core. Most of the release was composed
of dust and debris near the site. Lighter materials were carried by
the wind over parts of the Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and even to parts
of Scandinavia and Europe. Thirty people died as a result of the
accident, and extreme increases in thyroid cancers have been observed
downwind of the site. If the wind had been westerly, the release
would have targeted the city of Kiev, which undoubtedly would have
resulted in many more fatalities. Chernobyl is the only case where
radiation related deaths have occurred as the result of an accident at
a commercial nuclear power site.
