...Another Gorgeous Day...

Get ready for another beautiful day on this late May Sunday in
Alabama. Skies will be mostly sunny with relatively low humidities
and temperatures in the lower 80s. Winds will be light out of the
north. Tonight will be another comfortable night with lows dropping
into the lower 50s under mostly clear skies.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We start the week off with more of the same weather
through Tuesday: namely mostly sunny skies with slowly rising
temperatures and humidities. Still, readings will be comfortable with
highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s. On Wednesday, we will be
watching high pressure over the mid-Atlantic that will send a back
door cold front down the eastern side of the Appalachians. Have you
heard that before this Spring? It doesn't look like it will be as
impressive as a couple of the other ones we have seen so far this
year. Still, you will notice a freshening easterly breeze on
Wednesday with a chance of showers and maybe a storm, mainly over
eastern sections of the area.

The front washes out Thursday, leaving us in a mild airmass Thursday
and Friday, with highs right around 80 and lows in the 50s. Just
about normal for this time of the year. It should also be dry for the
end of the week, with no rain expected either day. Saturday will see
the high pressure over the Mid-Atlantic heading eastward into the
western Atlantic. As it does, our winds will become more southerly
and moisture levels will begin to increase. Showers could appear on
the scene Saturday afternoon over southern sections and will
overspread the area Saturday night into Sunday. j

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: A violent tornado at Williamsburg, Kansas
produced a 71-mile path of destruction that included parts of the
southern suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri. The tornado path was 700
yards wide in some locations. There was near total devastation
through the suburbs of Ruskin Heights and Hickman Mills. A cancelled
check from Hickman Mills was later found in Ottumwa, Iowa. Pilots
flying around the storm at 30,000 feet reported seeing debris in the
air. A total of 44 people were killed and 531 were injured.
A 5000-pound gasoline tank was reportedly transported 1.5 miles and
dropped into a lake. It was one of Kansas City's worst weather
disasters of record.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Up to 1 million people were left homeless by a
cyclone with winds of 145 mph that struck Bangladesh, killing 46.
About a third of the casualties were reported in the port city
Chittagong, Bangladesh's second largest city. Tidal surges six feet
high covered islands and crops while winds toppled trees. Since 1970,
such storms have left an estimated 1.5 million people dead in the
vulnerable portions of the nation.

...Another Fabulous Morning...

What a glorious morning across Alabama on this Saturday in late May,
with widespread readings in the 40s. Enjoy them while you can, which
will be all of one more night, because the inventory is running out
quickly.

RECORDS FROM THIS MORNING: None in Alabama this morning, but to our
west, Mississippi did record some, including 44F at Vicksburg. The
46F at Jackson tied the record the date. Alabama lows included:
Cullman 36F, Fort Payne 37F, Crossville 39F, Black Creek 38.8F,
Odenville 39.4F, Munford 40F, Noccalula Falls 41F, Downtown Vinemont
41.5F, Pinson 43F, Tuscaloosa and Hueytown 44F, Anniston, Decatur 45F,
Birmingham International 53F, Calera 54F.

OUR FORECAST: Clear and comfortable again tonight with lows mainly
around 50 with a few 40s thrown in. Tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday look
to be mostly sunny with temperatures nudging upwards into the 80s each
day. By Wednesday, I still believe that we will see another of the
recently common back door cold front from the east, although this one
may not be an pronounced. There will be a slight chance of a shower
on Wednesday as it sets up. We should be partly sunny in the Thursday
and Friday time frame with mild temperatures. It now looks like rain
will hold off until at least Saturday evening. Sunday looks wet.

MAIN EVENTSEVERE WEATHER TODAY: Nationally, severe weather today will
be limited to the area from Montana down into Wyoming and up into
South Dakota from high based storms as an upper level disturbance
slides across that area. Wind advisories cover parts of the northern
Rockies and Central Florida. Northern and Central Florida is under a
critical fire danger today with a severe drought continuing as well as
low humidities and strong winds behind the cold front that passed
through yesterday. Our fire danger has lessened somewhat since
yesterday with the relaxing of the northerly winds, but extreme
caution must still be exercised in Alabama.

CELESTIAL TREAT: Tonight, at sunset, go outside and look to the west
where you will enjoy the pairing of a beautiful crescent moon and the
planet Venus, the two brightest objects in the sky.

"WE PRAYED" was the headline on the Fort Payne Times Journal after an
F2 tornado chewed its way across the northern part of the Northeast
Alabama city. About 150 people were attending the Jaycette's Little
Miss Maid of Cotton Contest when the twister struck about 6:55 p.m. on
a Saturday night on this date in 1973. There was little time for
warning, as a man ran into the gym at the school and yelled for
everyone to get against the walls and down on the ground seconds
before the tornado hit. Fortunately, there were no injuried at the
school even though the gym was damaged. 35 people were injured in
Fort Payne. Damage was also heavy at Section, AL, where 2 more people
were hurt. A survey conducted after the tornado showed that 65
percent of the residents of Fort Payne were taken by surprise by the
storm, despite warnings being broadcast by both local radio stations
and Huntsville television stations at least an hour before the storm
when the Birmingham NWS issued a tornado warning.

...Can't Beat It...

If I could find the place that has the exact weather we had here in
Birmingham on Friday year round, I would have to consider moving
there. San Diego probably comes close, but I would miss the rain and
storms. So, I guess that I will just love the weather right here in
my little hometown. And cherish days like yesterday and today.

COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING: Lows across much of the area
dropped well into the 40s this morning, close to record levels for the
date. The record for this morning at the Birmingham Airport is 43.
Tomorrow morning's record is 41. Both will likely be safe. Lows
tomorrow morning will probably reach the upper 40s, and that is the
last we will see of 40s for awhile.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Skies will be mostly clear through the weekend, with
highs in the upper 70s today. By tomorrow, we will likely see
readings in the lower 80s again.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure will remain in control of our weather
through Tuesday. Temperatures will edge upward, into the lower 80s of
Monday. By then, high pressure over the mid-Atlantic states will
propel a back door cold front southward along the eastern side of the
Appalachians. This will allow an easterly wedge to push into Alabama
from the east. If it arrives on Tuesday, it will back temperatures
off a bit. If it does not arrive until late in the day, we might see
upper 80s. There could be a few showers with the backdoor front.
Meanwhile, a sharp upper level trough will be swinging toward Alabama.
This will move a fizzling cold front toward Alabama. Moisture will
be limited and the main part of the trough should stay to the north of
us, so rain chances will be rather limited, but we can expect a round
of showers and storms, either late on Wednesday or on Thursday.

END OF THE WEEK: The front should hang up over the state for the
latter part of the week. This will to a continued chance of showers
and storms for Friday.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: By Saturday, an upper low will be forming to
our west. It looks like a good chance of rain on Sunday, and perhaps
into Monday with a surface low and upper level low in the area.

ON THIS DATE IN 1780: Forest fires in sent smoke across New England,
which made the sky as dark at noon as it would have been at night.
The darkness caused chicken to roost. People were frightened that God
was punishing them..

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Devastating flooding in the historic downtown
section of beautiful Hot Springs AR results from over 13 inches of
rain in just nine hours. Serious flooding occurred downtown along
Central Avenue. Water was released from Lake Hamilton and raced
downstream to Remmel Dam. Many houses and cabins, which had been
swept away by the floodwaters, were swept over the dam!

APRIL WEATHER IN MID MAY: The Regions Charity Golf Classic this
weekend at Ross Bridge Resort could not have custom ordered more
perfect weather for hitting that little round ball. It will be
virtually all sunshine with low humidity. Highs Saturday will be
around 78 and Sunday about 82. Of course, that is the same weather on
the menu for all of Alabama. Nights will be cool all the way into
early next week. By Sunday, highs should edge back up into the lower
80s and then the mid 80s on Monday and Tuesday. Our weather models,
that we lean on quite a bit, do not indicate any rain for parched
Alabama until about next Thursday. At that time, another cold front
will approach from the NW and probably move across Alabama next Friday.

Temperatures across Alabama are more like those in mid to late March
instead of the latter part of May. There was a distinct chill in the
air across Alabama early this morning. Just a few of the lows
included 41 at Ft. Payne Airport, 42 in Odenville and Vigo, 44 in
Black Creek, Crossville, DeSoto State Park and 47 in Anniston,
Decatur and Heflin. Birmingham had 48 and Tuscaloosa had 49. The dew
point today has been in the 40s and the wind was gusting as high as
20 mph at times. It is no wonder that a Red Flag Warning continues
for much of the state. Translation: no outdoor burning. Alabama has
been fortunate so far compared to South Georgia and Florida.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: On Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, if the sun had
been shining today, observers would have taken a sunbath. It was only
36 degrees and 9 mph winds…cold day in New England…out on Cape Cod a
cold rain in the 40s with gusts to 35 mph…in the war zone, 95 to 98
over the weekend in Baghdad heating to 105 to 109 Monday through
Wednesday…extensive showers brought at least temporary relief to
vicious wildfires in New Jersey…26 this morning near Yellowstone Park…
7 above zero in Nuiqsut and good old Deadhorse, Alaska…29 atop Mt.
LeConte in Great Smoky Mountain National Park…even on the Alabama/NW
Florida coast, dew point in the mid 40s today made it very
comfortable…did you know that last year Baldwin County produced more
peanuts than any county in Alabama with 81,498,000 pounds…Houston
County was second…Alabama was third in the USA with peanuts…Georgia
and Texas were the leaders.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Since her haircut, Miss Molly's big
eyes show better…I try not to look at her, because those eyes get to
me and I cannot tell her no…drove to the far end of Deerfoot Parkway
late yesterday for some ice cream at Dairy Queen. Had my first
Blizzard in my life. Glad my doctor, who has an office next door, did
not walk in and catch me. A delightful thing happened there. A lady
drove up in an SUV with a Great Dane in the back, so big that she
filled up the entire back seat and had to duck her head. That is, by
far, the biggest dog I have seen in my life. She is 6 years old and
loves ice cream. So the lady bought herself an ice cream cone and the
Great Dane a big cup of ice cream. The dog licked every bit of the
ice cream out of the cup. She looked like a great big gentle animal.
I would have given anything to see the expression on Little Miss
Molly's face if they could meet. Life goes on and I love life, even
though I need to avoid ice cream, pop tarts, sausage balls and
regular milk.

...A Wonderful Weekend Ahead...

We won't have many more days like this before the summer begins. The
weather today will not be hot, hazy, humid, or steamy. Even with
maximum sunshine, temperatures will run about 5 to 10 degrees below
normal along with low humidity and excellent visibility. And, look
for another very cool night tonight. We are forecasting an average low
of 47 degrees early tomorrow morning; that is just four degrees away
from the record low of 43 recorded in 1976.

GREAT WEEKEND FOR GOLF: You could not ask for better weather for the
annual Regions Charity Golf Classic at the Ross Bridge Resort. Mostly
sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights will continue through
Sunday. The high tomorrow will be in the upper 70s, and low to mid 80s
will return on Sunday, but even then the humidity will remain low. It
will be almost impossible to find a cloud in the sky over the weekend
as the very dry air stays in place.

IT CAN BE HOT IN MAY: On this date in 1962 the temperature soared to
98 degrees in Birmingham. That was an especially hot month; a total of
15 daily record highs were recorded in Birmingham in May 1962. The
hottest day was May 28, 1962 when the high was 99 degrees; that is
still our hottest May temperature on record.

DRY DRY DRY: Birmingham's rain deficit for the year is now 12.87", and
at this time we see no chance of rain through Tuesday of next week.
ABC 33/40 News had an interesting story last night; the bottom line is
that Alabama Power can't do much to raise the low lake levels across
the state (where they control hydroelectric dams), and boaters are
urged to use extreme caution. The Birmingham Water Works is in a
"Stage Two" drought condition; calling for customers to follow an
odd/even watering schedule two days per week. Birmingham Water Works
officials say if drought conditions worsen, then it will move to a
higher stage of its drought plan, which calls for fines and
surcharges. Unfortunately our next chance of rain is around Thursday
of next week. Most likely, it will take some kind of tropical system
to really break the back of this drought affecting Alabama.

AT THE BEACH: Dry air will also cover the central Gulf coast for the
next five days; look for almost maximum available sunshine on a daily
basis through Tuesday of next week; afternoon highs will be close to
80 along the immediate coast, and the sea water temperature at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab late yesterday was 78 degrees.

EXTREMES: Yesterday felt more like winter around the Great Lakes; the
coldest spots were Amasa, Michigan and Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin with
23 degrees. Hottest place in the nation was once again Death Valley,
California with 109.

CLEAR FROM MOBILE TO MISSOULA: And also clear from Tuscaloosa to
Tacoma and from Birmingham to Bellingham. That pretty much describes
the weather across the central part of the country this afternoon. We
might as well settle down, calm our nerves and enjoy the clear dry
weather, since we cannot manufacture rain. Many areas got rain
yesterday. A few spots even got an inch, but most of the amounts were
not enough to write home about. (That is an old West Alabama saying.)

It was chilly across the state this morning, especially for the
middle of May. One of the lowest temperatures was 39 at Ft. Payne
Airport. It was 46 in Black Creek, Cullman, Pinson and DeSoto State
Park, 47 in Muscadine and Decatur and 48 in Gadsden.

This afternoon, we are looking to the north for a secondary cold
front that is pushing south through Tennessee and Kentucky. While
this front could bring a few scattered clouds, it is dry as a bone
and we do not expect any showers. It looks like almost total sunshine
all the way into the first part of next week. Very little risk of any
rain until the middle of next week.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: A large high pressure area will settle over
the SE Saturday and Sunday giving us some clear, cool nights. By
Tuesday, the wind will shift around to the SE and there is a
possibility of another cold front moving into the SE on Thursday. It
could bring some more showers and thunderstorms. 110 in Death Valley
was the hottest in the USA Wednesday. You will hear a lot about that
place the rest of the summer. It holds the all-time high for the USA
of 134 in 1934. Coldest this morning was 23 in Amasa, Michigan and
Man-O-Lakes, Wisconsin. I have never heard of Amasa. A lot of rough
weather in the NE yesterday all the way from the Atlantic Seaboard to
Massachusetts and Connecticut. Philadelphia got over 1 inch of rain.
The temperature dropped to 12 on this date in 1979 at Mauna Key
Observatory in Hawaii at an elevation of 13,770 feet. That is the
coldest ever in the islands.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure enjoyed a weather presentation by
Brian Peters this morning for the AWS at our church, Huffman Baptist.
AWS stands for Adults With Seniority. The AWS gave Brian a beautiful
cake and I am glad he got video of it. Brian and Jane also have a
wonderful Sheltie named Dakota. There is a landing partway up their
stairs at home and Dakota loves to hang out there so she can get a
clear view out the front door. My Little Miss Molly is still pooped.
When she was at the beauty shop a couple of days ago, they gave her a
shot to help her not have such itchy skin and scratch so much. That
must be why she has been subdued. She has been sleeping like a
zombie. She also may be tired due to our irregular hours and
unpredictable bedtime. She has not even begged me to have a ballgame
with her in the last two days. As soon as I get through with this
report, I am going to gather up a bunch of her balls and beg her to
play with me. Maybe reverse psychology will help. Life goes on.....

...A Cool Breeze...

A refreshing dose of continental Polar air will flow into Alabama
today on a brisk northwest breeze. We are forecasting a good supply of
sunshine today with low humidity levels and excellent visibility;
quite a chance from just two days ago when a code red air quality
alert was issued for the Birmingham metro area. Daytime temperatures
today will peak in the mid 70s, about 5 to 8 degrees below normal for
May 17. Then, tonight, with a clear sky and diminishing wind, the dry
air will cool quickly, and by daybreak tomorrow we expect temperatures
in the 45 to 50 degree range across the northern half of the state. A
reinforcing shot of cool, dry air will roll in here tomorrow morning,
providing another very nice spring day tomorrow.

THE WEEKEND: We will begin the weekend with a very cool morning early
Saturday; we are expecting mid 40s as far south as Birmingham, and
that is very close to record levels (the record low for May 19 is 43
set in 1976). The sky will be sunny Saturday and Sunday with a gradual
warming trend; we expect a high in the low 80s Saturday, with mid 80
on Sunday. Needless to say, the weather looks almost perfect for the
Regions Charity Golf Classic this weekend at the
Ross Bridge Resort.

The dry weather will continue into the first half of next week; at
this point it looks like the next significant chance of rain is about
7 to 8 days away, toward the end of next week.

WEDNESDAY'S RAIN: As expected, rainfall amounts across Alabama were
generally between a quarter and one-half inch. Totals included 1.18"
at Brookley Field in Mobile, .83" at Hueytown, .63" at Northport, .60"
at the Birmingham Airport, .52" at downtown Birmingham, .51" at
Trussville, .39" at Blount Springs, .33" at Gadsden, .30" at Mount
Cheaha, .29" at McCalla, .23" at Demopolis, and .09" at Anniston. It
is interesting note that at our SKYCAM location in downtown Jasper,
there was not enough rain to measure, and the SKYCAM site in downtown
Clanton measured only 0.01", which is barely enough to wet the
pavement.

FOR THE YEAR: With the .60" that was measured yesterday at the
Birmingham Airport, the total for the year is 10.28", which is 12.71"
below normal. The rain deficit will be well over 13 inches again by
early next week with no rain expected for the next seven days.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: There were 57 reports of damaging wind
yesterday along the Atlantic coast in the general area from
Washington, D.C. to Boston. Much cooler air has invaded the U.S.; the
forecast high in Chicago today is only 58 degrees. The coldest spot in
the continental U.S. yesterday was West Yellowstone, Montana with a
frosty 23 degrees. Hot weather continues across the deserts in the
Southwest U.S.; the hottest place was Death Valley, California with
110 degrees. Phoenix reported a high of 99. Dayton, Ohio was drenched
with 2.32" of rain yesterday.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Showers and thunderstorms moved into NW Alabama
around midnight and they have been progressing across the state
today. Rain amounts were highly variable with some places not getting
any. We believe that part of Sumter County received over 1 inch, as
well as some areas of Mobile and Baldwin Counties.

A cold front entered the state late this morning and was moving SE
this afternoon. This will end the showers over most of North Alabama
by early this evening. Showers and some storms may persist over SE
Alabama into this evening. The Storm Prediction Center thinks that a
few thunderstorms could be strong this afternoon and early evening
over South Alabama ahead of the front. A few isolated ones could even
have hail and high winds. By morning, temperatures will be in the low
to mid 50s across Central Alabama.

If we did not need rain so badly, we would say beautiful weather for
Thursday all the way through the weekend and into early next week. It
will be mostly sunshine each day with low humidity, cool nights and
comfortable afternoons. This bodes well for the Regions Charity Golf
Classic at the Ross Bridge Resort in Birmingham this weekend. The PGA
Seniors Tournament will have ideal weather Friday, Saturday and
Sunday and the lower humidity will make it quite comfortable.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A rare Tornado Watch this afternoon for parts
of SE New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Further south, a
Severe Thunderstorm Watch for New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore
and Washington. All of this is triggered by the same cold front that
is moving into Alabama. In Upstate New York, there could even be some
snow showers after midnight tonight in places like Lake Placid and
Saranac Lake and temperatures as low as 27 tomorrow night. Coldest in
the lower 48 this morning was 23 on the west side of Yellowstone
National Park. Over 2 inches of rain in the last 24 hours in Dayton.
Did you know that in parts of the West, down slope canyon winds are
so persistent that trees grow into a permanent leaning position
bending with the wind? A good example is at the base of Logan Canyon
in North Utah, where trees in the City of Logan are leaning toward
the west. On this date in 1952, powerful canyon winds caused $1
million in damage in the Salt Lake City/Ogden area with gusts to 92
mph at Hill Air Force Base.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure do appreciate the compassionate
remarks relating to the story about Edsel and Joyce Freeman losing
their great dog, Roscoe. A lot of people out there are hurting
because of the loss of a pet. I will pass along the encouragement to
the Freeman family. Every time Little Miss Molly goes to the PBS
(Puppy Beauty Shop) she comes home smelling good and cute as a
picture, but also pooped. She has been sleeping most of today trying
to catch up. She did not pressure me to go on a walk after she came
home until almost midnight. There is something about dogs that causes
us to love them so much. They love their masters unceasingly. There
is no good mood/bad mood with them. For example, Molly is as friendly
as could be any time of the day or night. I told her yesterday if she
did not stop wagging her tail so much, it was going to fall off.
Humans are not friendly in all of their waking hours like dogs. Life
goes on.....

...Showers Today; Cooler Tomorrow...

A very welcomed cold front will roll into Alabama, and will help to
clean the air and bring a decent round of showers and thunderstorms to
the state. We are still projecting average rain amounts of one-quarter
to one-half inch across the state, but a few spots might receive a
little more from the stronger thunderstorms. For now we don't expect
any problem with widespread severe weather due to limited instability
values and weak wind fields. Some of the stronger storms could produce
gusty winds and small hail, however.

The wind will shift around to the northwest by mid-afternoon, and most
of the showers and storms will be out of the state by late afternoon
as drier air begins to roll in here. In addition to being drier, the
air will also be considerably cooler. By daybreak tomorrow, we should
be in the low to mid 50s with a fresh northerly breeze. Then, during
the day, despite a good supply of sunshine we are forecasting a high
only in the mid 70s with very low humidity levels. Another benefit to
the airmass change will be a great improvement in air quality.

SMOKE FROM A DISTANT FIRE: Particulate pollution across Alabama was
sky high yesterday due to smoke covering the state coming from the
hundreds of wildfires burning over South Georgia and the Florida
peninsula. The low level wind yesterday was out of the southeast;
tomorrow the wind will be from the north so all of the smoke and haze
will be gone; replaced by a cobalt blue sky and excellent
visibility.Air quality will remain very good through the weekend.

COOL MORNINGS AHEAD: We expect low temperatures between 45 and 50
degrees both Friday and Saturday morning across North Alabama. This is
well below normal, and not far from record levels for this time of the
year. Afternoons will remain very comfortable, with a high in the
upper 70s on Friday. A slow warming trend is expected over the
weekend; we are forecasting low 80s on Saturday, and mid 80s on
Sunday. But, on both days humidity values will remain low. Needless to
say, excellent weather for the Regions Charity Golf Classic at the
Ross Bridge Resort.

ANOTHER TORNADO DEATH: From the Associated Press... The massive
tornado that devastated the town of Greensburg nearly two weeks ago
has claimed another life. Harold Schmidt, 77, a resident of
Greensburg, died Monday at Pratt Regional Medical Center of injuries
he suffered in the tornado, the hospital said. Nine other people died
in Greensburg when the tornado struck on May 4, and the storm claimed
two more lives in the nearby towns of Macksville and Hopewell,
bringing the total number of fatalities to 12.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The coldest spot in the nation yesterday was
Barrow, Alaska with two degrees below zero. Strong thunderstorms over
Louisiana dropped 1.87" on Baton Rouge yesterday. Very hot weather
continues over the Desert Southwest; Phoenix, AZ soared to 101; the
hottest place in the nation was Death Valley, CA with 109.

================================================

SUNNY, DRY WEATHER THURSDAY THROUGH WEEKEND: We still have the
unusual situation of a lot of smoke and haze in many parts of Alabama
due to wildfires over SE Georgia and down the Florida Peninsula. I
cannot remember this much smoke affecting our area when the fires
were not in Alabama. There was a case back in 1952 and 1954 when
visibility was restricted due to smoke over many parts of Alabama,
but the numerous fires were here in the state during a significant
drought. The smoke and haze will stay with us overnight. In fact, in
could thicken some because of a temperature inversion. Clouds will
move into the state late tonight leading the way for occasional
showers and thunderstorms Wednesday.

Latest guidance does not give us a big widespread rain event here in
Central Alabama. The total for the day will be mostly between 1/3 and
½ inch. A few spots could get more, but a lot of areas will not get
that much.

REGIONS CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC: It is the senior PGA golf tournament
in Birmingham at the Ross Bridge Resort. Outstanding weather is
expected starting Thursday and all the way through the weekend. The
humidity will be a lot lower. There should be lots of sunshine with
cool nights and pleasant afternoons. Lows will be in the upper 40s
Friday and Saturday and lower 50s on Sunday. Highs will be in the mid
70s Thursday and Friday and low 80s Saturday and Sunday. Hard to beat.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The coldest in the lower connected 48 states
this morning was 20 in Yellowstone National Park. Did you know that
Yellowstone was the very first USA national park? Great Smoky
Mountain National Park, however, has more visitors each year than any
other park in the system. Coldest in Alaska this morning was 1 above
zero at Wainwright. There is still 17 inches of snow on the ground at
Whittier, Alaska. That is a big meltdown from the tremendous snow
pack they always have in the middle of the winter. Severe
Thunderstorm Watches were in effect this afternoon from Eastern
Missouri and through Southern Illinois, Northern Indiana and SE
Michigan. Several warnings were in effect over North Louisiana. There
were even some strong thunderstorms for NW Mississippi. A few storms
could reach NW Alabama overnight, but most of our precipitation
should be tomorrow. For Wednesday, the NWS has a slight risk from
about Norfolk north through Baltimore, Washington, Atlantic City,
Philadelphia and New York.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Rather solemn around my tiny corner
today. Just like the empty nest syndrome when all the kids marry and
move away. I have gone from my office to the kitchen for coffee 5
times today and I did not see a little one with a ball in her mouth
wanting to play. Little Miss Molly went to the PBS (Puppy Beauty
Shop) early this morning and will not be home until late afternoon.
Eerie quiet. I enjoy the break, but gosh, I miss her already. She
will look so cute when she gets home and she will smell good, too.
Yesterday afternoon, at the far end of the walking track, there was a
beautiful cat, black as midnight, pretty eyes. It was young. It was
lying on a concrete rest bench. Molly walked to within 6 inches of
the bench and never saw the cat. The cat did not move. Molly came
back by the bench and happened to see the cat. The cat leapt off the
bench right on top of Molly and scrambled to get in a nearby culvert.
Never know what is going to happen. Be prepared is my motto. Life
goes on......

...Showers Return Tomorrow...

Warm and rather hazy conditions will continue across Alabama today;
most communities will have a high somewhere in the low to mid 80s,
which is slightly above normal for May 15. A low level wind out of the
southeast today has the potential to bring some of the smoke from
fires over South Georgia up into the northern half of Alabama. While
we can't completely rule out the chance of a shower this afternoon,
they should be very isolated and for now we won't mention it in our
formal forecast.

WE NEED RAIN: And, we should get some tomorrow. Birmingham's rain
total for the year is only 9.68", and our rain deficiency for the year
is right at 13 inches (12.99). So, any chance of showers is a good
thing. A cold front will bring a chance of showers and a few
thunderstorms to Alabama tomorrow; for now it looks like the best
chance of rain will come during the afternoon hours, roughly from 12
Noon through 6:00 p.m. Unfortunately, rain amounts for most places
will be on the light side; it looks like rain totals will average
somewhere between one-quarter and one-half inch across the northern
half of Alabama.

A COOL CHANGE: Following the showers tomorrow, a refreshing change to
cool air is ahead for Alabama on Thursday and Friday. Daytime highs
will drop into the 70s, and by early Friday morning we are forecasting
lows in the upper 40s. Birmingham's record low for Friday (May 18) is
44 degrees, which was recorded in 1973. It is unlikely that the
Birmingham Airport gets that cool, but some of the colder valley
locations over North Alabama will be very close. In addition to being
cooler, the air will be very dry meaning humidity values will be
unusually low for mid-May.

REGIONS CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC: What a great weekend for the annual
Senior PGA Golf Tournament in Birmingham, now played at the Ross
Bridge Resort. We are projecting almost maximum available sunshine
both Saturday and Sunday, with low 80s on Saturday and mid 80s on
Sunday. But, humidity levels will remain low making the warm
afternoons comfortable. Early mornings will be cool and crisp; we will
be close to 50 early Saturday, with mid 50s early Sunday morning.

AT THE BEACH: Just a few isolated showers and storms for the central
Gulf coast through Thursday; then the weather will be completely dry
by Friday and the weekend. The high along the immediate coast will be
close to 80 degrees, and the sea water temperature in the Gulf of
Mexico was 75 degrees at Panama City, Florida late yesterday
afternoon.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was
Death Valley, CA with 109 degrees. Phoenix, AZ reached the triple
digits as well; their high was 102. Chicago had one of their hottest
days so far in 2007; their high was 90, but today will be much cooler
with a high of only 74.

EXCELLENT WEATHER FOR LOCAL GOLF TOURNAMENT: Our best chance of
rain comes on Wednesday, but it is not an event for which you should
throw a street party. A cold front will be approaching Wednesday. A
band of showers and maybe some thunderstorms will occur in advance
and along the front. Here in Central Alabama we could see a few
showers Wednesday morning, but we believe the best timeframe will be
Wednesday afternoon and evening. Latest information points to a
lesser amount of rain than earlier expected. Some parts of Central
Alabama could receive ½ inch, but we believe most places will have
more like 0.30 to 0.40, but every little bit helps.

AFTER THE RAIN: Some very pleasant weather starting Thursday and
continuing through the weekend. Cool nights, less humid and not so
warm during the daytime. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s
Thursday and Friday and in the lower 80s on Saturday and Sunday.
Temperatures will fall into the mid 50s Thursday morning and as low
as the upper 40s Friday morning.

DRY AS A BONE: Despite the scattered heavy showers and storms
Friday afternoon and Friday night, it is still very dry over most of
the state. The rain deficit for Birmingham will reach 13 inches
tomorrow. This is the seventh month in a row that rain has been below
normal at Birmingham Airport. Only 5 months out of the last 17 have
been wetter than normal. We have received only 38.41 inches of rain
in the last 12 months from May 2006 through April of this year.
Normal is 54 inches.

THE WILDFIRES: We have introduced some haze and smoke to our
forecast for tomorrow. A southeasterly wind flow will be spreading
some smoke up across parts of Alabama from the SE Georgia and Florida
wildfires.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Will catch up on Molly adventures
later, but today I want to tell a story that should make all of us
enjoy our pets more while we have them. The story is about Roscoe, a
Boston Terrier that belonged to our great friends Edsel and Joyce
Freeman in NE Jefferson County. They had him for over 10 years. He
was a legend in their community. He became ill a few months ago and
it was necessary to have him put down recently. Edsel and Joyce took
that dreaded trip to see their vet in Blount County. The doctor asked
if they wanted to be in the room. Joyce could not handle that, so she
went out to the truck and started crying. They have a very
compassionate vet, Dr. Jeremy Edwards. He went out to the truck in a
few minutes, opened the door and hugged and consoled Joyce. Edsel had
already constructed a nice coffin for Roscoe, so they took him to
their farm in Blount County for the burial. When the Freemans moved
into their new home, there were still a lot of homes under
construction in that area. Roscoe would make a daily tour of where
the houses were being constructed and became friends with all of the
builders. They would give him treats and he would stay with them for
hours. Every time Edsel would drive up to Blount County to work on
his farm, Roscoe would ride with him. He would not let Edsel out of
his sight, as if he were trying to protect him. Roscoe also would not
come into the house unless specifically invited. He was a great dog
and probably treated people better than some humans. We must
appreciate our little ones more....

...Late Week Surprise...

Mother's Day 2007 was a hot one across Alabama. Some of the afternoon
readings across the area included:

89F at the Birmingham Airport
90F at Calera and Pinson
91F at Anniston
94F at Tuscaloosa

It was the third straight day that the mercury reached 89F at
Birmingham. Drier air filtered in during the afternoon and dewpoints
were in the 40s overnight.

TODAY: We will be visited by another wedge front from the east again
today, much like last week. You will notice a freshening easterly
wind arriving during the morning hours, along with some Atlantic
moisture that will take the form of cloudiness. The clouds and cooler
air will keep eastern sections cooler than western sections by about
5-8 degrees. Readings will range from near 80 near Anniston to 82 at
Birmingham to 87 at Tuscaloosa.

THROUGH MIDWEEK: The high over the mid-Atlantic states will slide
southwestward into Georgia by Tuesday. As it does, winds will become
more southeasterly. Tuesday will be a mostly sunny day. Meanwhile, a
cold front will be approaching Alabama from the northwest. The front
will spread showers and storms into the state on Wednesday during the
day. It does not look like this system will present a threat of
severe weather. Rainfall amounts will average about one half
inch.

END OF THE WEEK: Much drier and cooler air will invade Alabama on
Thursday. It appears that the front will pass through quickly enough
and penetrate far enough into Alabama to allow quick clearing.
Temperatures will remain in the 70s on Thursday and Friday. Lows on
Friday morning will be in the upper 40s, quite comfortable for May in
Alabama.

ON THIS DATE IN 1686: Gabriel Fahrenheit, inventor of the thermometer
and the Fahrenheit temperature scale was born in Danzig, Poland. It
is believed that the basis for his scale was the range from the
coldest reading he observed in his home town, 0 degrees, to his body
temperature, or 100 degrees. .(He must have had a fever while he was
creating the scale.)

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: Severe hailstorm hit Kansas City, Missouri.
Some hailstones were
observed as large as 9.5 inches in circumference. Nearly every home
in the eastern and central parts of the city had their south facing
windows knocked out. Several injuries resulted.

...Beautiful Mother's Day...

You couldn't ask for better weather for Mother's Day across Central
Alabama. Sunny and warm conditions prevail, and humidity levels are
lower than they have been recently. I hope that all of our moms have
had a special day in every way!

BENIGN NATIONAL WEATHER: I know that I am in May when I get to these
short lists of historic weather events in my database. At least in
October, there are usually several hurricanes to talk about through
history. I guess May has tornadoes on the Plains, but overall, the
nation enjoys fairly fine weather in May. Case in point this morning:
when I pulled up the national watch/warning/advisory map, there simply
were none. And its not that the national weather maps are devoid of
features. There is strong high pressure over the Great Lakes. A wavy
stationary front over the Southeast. Complex low pressure over the
Rockies. Just not dangerous weather this morning. There is a threat
of severe weather later today over the northern Rockies as well as the
upper Great Lakes.

BENIGN ALABAMA WEATHER: Our weather will continue to be very benign
for the next two and one half days. Dewpoints are a little lower than
yesterday. They will settle into the middle 50s tonight and stay in
the 50s through tomorrow. Winds will gradually shift around to the
southeast during the day tomorrow, allowing moisture levels to slowly
return. The chance of an isolated afternoon or evening shower is
very, very small on Monday and Tuesday, almost not mentioning. Expect
comfortable lows around 60 and highs in the lower 80s through Tuesday,
which is very near normal for this time of year.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: An approaching cold front will bring a good
chance of showers and storms on Wednesday. I think everyone will
receive rain, but your actual rainfall amount will vary. An average
of one half inch looks good for now. Still not a drought buster. It
now looks like the front will move through quickly on Thursday and we
may get to remove rain chances then. Nice conditions will settle in
for Thursday through the following Monday. We may see upper 40s by
Friday morning. Highs on Thursday and Friday will remain in the 70s.
We make the low 80s again by weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Windstorms in Bangladesh killed between 500 and
1,000, injured more than 30,000, and left 100,000 homeless. More than
80 villages with 10,000 homes were destroyed. As many as 22 people
died in one family. At least a portion of these windstorms was
tornadic.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Two brothers hiking with their family in Zion
National Park in Utah were swept away when flash flooding suddenly
struck after a burst of heavy rain. The youngsters were ahead of the
rest of their family when they came to a part of the trail that was
underwater. They were swept away as they attempted the cross the
flooded part of the trail. The ten year was swept over a ledge and
fell 100 feet to his death. The 5 year old clung to a tree and was
rescued.
