...Late Week Surprise...

Mother's Day 2007 was a hot one across Alabama. Some of the afternoon
readings across the area included:

89F at the Birmingham Airport
90F at Calera and Pinson
91F at Anniston
94F at Tuscaloosa

It was the third straight day that the mercury reached 89F at
Birmingham. Drier air filtered in during the afternoon and dewpoints
were in the 40s overnight.

TODAY: We will be visited by another wedge front from the east again
today, much like last week. You will notice a freshening easterly
wind arriving during the morning hours, along with some Atlantic
moisture that will take the form of cloudiness. The clouds and cooler
air will keep eastern sections cooler than western sections by about
5-8 degrees. Readings will range from near 80 near Anniston to 82 at
Birmingham to 87 at Tuscaloosa.

THROUGH MIDWEEK: The high over the mid-Atlantic states will slide
southwestward into Georgia by Tuesday. As it does, winds will become
more southeasterly. Tuesday will be a mostly sunny day. Meanwhile, a
cold front will be approaching Alabama from the northwest. The front
will spread showers and storms into the state on Wednesday during the
day. It does not look like this system will present a threat of
severe weather. Rainfall amounts will average about one half
inch.

END OF THE WEEK: Much drier and cooler air will invade Alabama on
Thursday. It appears that the front will pass through quickly enough
and penetrate far enough into Alabama to allow quick clearing.
Temperatures will remain in the 70s on Thursday and Friday. Lows on
Friday morning will be in the upper 40s, quite comfortable for May in
Alabama.

ON THIS DATE IN 1686: Gabriel Fahrenheit, inventor of the thermometer
and the Fahrenheit temperature scale was born in Danzig, Poland. It
is believed that the basis for his scale was the range from the
coldest reading he observed in his home town, 0 degrees, to his body
temperature, or 100 degrees. .(He must have had a fever while he was
creating the scale.)

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: Severe hailstorm hit Kansas City, Missouri.
Some hailstones were
observed as large as 9.5 inches in circumference. Nearly every home
in the eastern and central parts of the city had their south facing
windows knocked out. Several injuries resulted.
