...Eye On The Tropics...

It seems a lot more like September than July, if you look at the
hurricane tracking charts. We have two named storms and a high
likelihood that we will gain another today. There are signs that we
will see a couple of more tropical cyclones in the Atlantic in the
next two weeks as we appear to be in for an active period.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: High pressure will continue to be in charge of our
weather on this mid-July Sunday. Moisture levels have returned to
fairly typical values for mid-summer, and we will see those numbers go
up through the week ahead. But today, the sinking air associated with
the high pressure will keep us mostly rain free. An upper disturbance
will swing down the Appalachians this afternoon, triggering isolated
storms that could drift down into North Alabama, but they will be few
and far between.

THE WEEK AHEAD: All eyes will be on a potential tropical storm of
hurricane moving into the southern Gulf early in the week, but it will
not affect us directly. The counter-clockwise flow around the system
will help to reinforce the moisture flux into Alabama however, and we
will see increasing rain chances my Wednesday. These increases will
be further enhanced by a trough that is forecast to develop over the
eastern United States late in the week, sending a frontal boundary our
way. We could see fairly good shower and storm chances in the
Thursday-Sunday time frame.

THE TROPICS: Bertha is expected to become extratropical today over
the North Atlantic, but not after she has enjoyed a long, long life.
Especially for a July storm. No other July storm has ever lasted as
long (over 16 days) or been a hurricane as long (over 8 days.) No
other July storm or hurricane formed as far to the east either. But
fortunately, Bertha has not caused much in the way of havoc, just some
gusty winds and high surf on Bermuda. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed
Saturday off the South Carolina coast. It has been steadily moving
northeastward overnight and will be passing just offshore of Cape
Hatteras this afternoon. It is not expected to strengthen beyond
strong tropical storm intensity and it will head on out to sea after
today. Our attention is drawn to the disturbance in the western
Caribbean. Convection associated with the system has continued to
increase and a tropical depression is likely to form anytime. With
warm ocean temperatures and a low wind shear environment,
intensification is likely. But the system will run into the Yucatan,
which will weaken it. It is expected to re-intensify after it emerges
into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. There is generally good
consensus among the models that it will move into northeastern Mexico
or extreme southern Texas. The threat to the North Central Gulf Coast
appears to be minimal.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: It was a dramatic scene at the Kennedy Space
Center in Florida as a waterspout moved onshore near pad 39B where the
Space Shuttle Columbia was sitting. The waterspout dissipated quickly
as it moved onshore. No damage was reported. Several dramatic photos
were taken of the shuttle with a menacing looking funnel behind it.

...Air Quality Alert...

The Alabama Partners for Clean Air have an Air Quality Alert posted
for today. In Jefferson and Shelby County, we are CODE RED for Ozone
and CODE ORANGE for Particle Pollution. Cut your emissions by
curtailing and combining travel, avoiding drive thrus, voiding mowing
the lawn, postponing burning and filling gas tanks after 6 p.m.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Droughts are rated from D0-D4, from abnormally dry
(D0), moderate drought (D1), severe drought (D2), extreme drought (D3)
and exceptional drought. About two thirds of Alabama is in either
moderate or severe drought condition now, generally everything east
and north of a line from Moulton to Greensboro to Camden to Evergreen
to Geneva. Areas east of a line from Huntsville to Birmingham to
Clanton to Eufaula are in the severe category. The good news is that
the D2-D3 area has shrunk by 50% in the past three months.

TONIGHT AND SUNDAY: Dry air aloft is keeping a tight lid on any
shower development again today. In fact, clouds are even having a
hard time forming. This is leading to some really warm temperatures
in the middle and upper 90s. In the low levels of the atmosphere,
moisture levels will start slowly increasing tonight, so it will not
feel as comfortable. But that dry air aloft should keep a clamp on
storm development again on Sunday with more hot temperatures in
store. Be careful with the hot temperature and poor air quality.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Hazy, hot and humid conditions will prevail Monday
and Tuesday with just isolated showers or storms. By Wednesday, a
disturbance in the zonal flow will start to carve out a bit of a
trough over the eastern U.S. allowing a frontal boundary to approach.
Showers and storms will be on the increase during the latter half of
the week into the weekend. All eyes will also be on the Gulf of
Mexico as a system enters from the western Caribbean.

TROPICS: Bertha has been a named storm for 16 days, the longest any
July tropical cyclone has ever been around. It will be downgraded to
a tropical storm later today as cooler waters and increasing wind
shear take their toll. Newly christened Tropical Storm Cristobal is
centered about 100 miles southeast of Charleston SC early this
afternoon. The system moved erratically overnight but should commence
a slow northeastward movement later today which will keep it very near
the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts through tomorrow. It is
expected to strengthen. Convection flared this morning with the system
in the Caribbean south of Jamaica. Two Air Force flights are
scheduled into the disturbance today. A tropical depression will
likely form later today or tonight and it should become a tropical
storm by tomorrow. The GFS moves it into the South Texas coast. The
GFDL to near the Texas/Louisiana border as a Cat Two hurricane. The
Canadian says South Texas. The HWRF says southern Texas. The NOGAPS
model doesn't develop it until the Yucatan and moves it into Mexico.
The UK Met keeps it over Central America.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Hurricane Danny was lashing the Alabama Gulf
Coast with winds of 80 mph. The storm stalled over the southern end
of Mobile Bay, dumping thirty inches of rain on Coastal Mobile and
Baldwin Counties. 36.71 inches of rain fell during the storm at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab (25.98 inches of which fell in just seven
hours). The incredible rainfall caused extensive flooding. Two
people were killed in storm preparations. A four story condominium
complex which was under construction in Gulf Shores was leveled by the
storm. At the Marriott Grand Hotel in Point Clear, a couple was wed
despite the hurricane, even though power was out and a bridesmaid
couldn't get to the hotel.

...Nate King Cole Weather...

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Remember that old
song from the 60s by Nat King Cole? Well if there is any better song
for our weather forecast this weekend, I am not sure what it would
be. You'll wish that summer could always be here.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: The Alabama Partners for Clean Air have an Air
Quality Alert posted for today. In Jefferson and Shelby County, we
are CODE RED for Ozone and Code Orange for Particle Pollution. Cut
your emissions by curtailing and combining travel, avoiding drive
thrus, avoiding mowing the lawn, postponing burning and filling gas
tanks after 6 p.m.

FOR YOUR WEEKEND: Seasonably hot conditions will prevail
across Alabama through the weekend, with highs well into the 90s.
What is unusual is the dry air. Dewpoints in the upper 50s and lower
60s are rather anomalous for mid-July in Alabama. That will begin to
change tonight as those dewpoints edge back up through the 60s. Skies
will be fair at worst today and tomorrow.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The dryness and suppressing weight of
high pressure has kept Alabama basically free of showers for the past
couple of days and that trend will continue into the first part of the
week. Highs will be in the 90s and lows will edge back toward the 70
degree mark. By Thursday, there are signs that a trough will begin to
be carved out over the eastern United States. This may allow
something like a back door cold front to edge in from the northeast
late in the week, increasing our shower and storm chances in the
Thursday/Friday time frame. Scattered showers and storms will be the
norm through the weekend.

TROPICS: Bertha is the July storm that will not die. It became a
hurricane again last night but that will be brief as it is headed over
colder water and running into increased wind shear. It will become
extratropical tonight or Sunday. Tropical depression number three
formed off the Georgia/South Carolina coast late last night. It may
become a tropical storm today as it heads northeast, remaining
offshore. A strong disturbance in the central Caribbean may become a
tropical depression at any time. It will race the other system to
become the C storm. C will be Cristobal. D will be Dolly. The
Caribbean disturbance should move west northwest, likely crossing the
Yucatan and turning on a more northwesterly course that will take it
into Northeast Mexico or near the Texas/Mexico border. The waters
over the western Caribbean are extremely warm if this thing can
develop a closed circulation. Watch out.

NOTES FROM ALL OVER: Numerous earthquakes off the
Oregon coast over the past week or so…fortunately no tsunamis
generated in any of these tremors. Yesterday was the 22nd anniversary
of the incredible KARE Minneapolis helicopter footage up close and
personal of a very photogenic F2 tornado.

ON THIS DATE IN 1977: Eighty eight years after the
Great Johnstown flood, the supposedly "flood proof" city of Johnstown,
Pennsylvania was struck again with a wall of water as the earthen
Laurel Run Dam gave way in the face of twelve inches of rain. Seventy
seven people were killed and $325 million dollars in damage was caused
by the swirling flood waters.

...Watching The Tropics...

A MOSTLY DRY WEEKEND: This is a time of the year when a shower could
pop up on almost any summer afternoon, and we might see a few on radar
over the weekend, but they should be few and far between as a
relatively dry and stable airmass for summer covers Alabama. Afternoon
highs will be mostly in the 91 to 95 degree range, but low dewpoints
will keep the relatively humidity values low during the peak of the
daytime heat. The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow and
Saturday is only about one in ten.

Looks like the next chance of seeing an increase in the number of
showers and storms will come around the middle of next week as a
weakening surface front approaches Alabama from the north.

BUSY TROPICAL SCENE: A disturbance just east of Savannah, Georgia
still has some potential to become a tropical depression, or even a
tropical storm during the next 24 hours as it moves slowly to the
north-northeast. It all depends on the ability of the circulation
center to stay over water. One way or another, the main impact will be
the threat of heavy rain from Brunswick north to Wilmington. All of
this moisture will stay well to the east of Alabama.

The most significant tropical system to watch in coming days is over
the Central Caribbean; this has the potential to become a tropical
depression tonight as it moves into an environment more favorable for
strengthening. Most of the computer models take this system right over
the tip of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, and into the Southwest
Gulf of Mexico by early next week. While most of those models
ultimately take this system to South Texas or northern Mexico, we have
seen a few tracks that suggest a more northward turn in the Gulf.
Needless to say, it is too early to be able to forecast the intensity
and landfall point, but this one will bear close watching in coming
days for all interests along the western and central Gulf coast
region. The next two named tropical storms will be Cristobal and Dolly.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: More heavy rain for parts of the Midwest
last night; Des Moines, Iowa was soaked with 2.06". Cold spot in the
nation this morning was Kaltag, Alaska with 33 degrees. The low was 35
this morning at Lake Yellowstone, Wyoming and Stanley, Idaho. Hottest
yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 120.

ON THE ROAD: Sorry, Miss Molly fans, I am writing the forecast package
for the great Alabama weather legend, J.B. Elliott today, so no Miss
Molly story. Don't blame him, blame me… this is the day of the annual
ABC 33/40 summer intern lunch. Today I am writing this from the
comfortable working area of our mobile weather center, StormChaser
33/40 as we drive through rural parts of Chilton and Autauga Counties.
The lunch is at Jim's Pit BBQ, which is on U.S. 82 between Maplesville
and Prattville, near Billingsley. We will be stopping by Peach Park in
Clanton on the way back for some ice cream. Doesn't get much better
than this… J.B. will return Monday!

...Lazy, Hazy Summer Days...

NOT MUCH RAIN: Looks like any afternoon showers and storms across our
state will remain very widely scattered through the weekend as the
deeper moisture will be well to the east of here. In fact, dewpoints
have lowered into the low and mid 60s, which will keep humidity values
relatively low during the peak of the afternoon heat. Afternoon highs
will be in the 90 to 95 degree range through Sunday.

There is a chance we will see an increase in the number of afternoon
showers and storms by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week as a
weakening front approaches from the north.

AT THE BEACH: Dry air covers the Central Gulf Coast, and it looks like
we can pretty much remove the chance of significant rain from Panama
City to Gulf Shores through Sunday, with mostly sunny days and fair
nights. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, and
the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was
87 degrees (F).

TOPIC: TROPICS: The disturbance that has been over the Florida
peninsula has moved northeast, and is in the Atlantic just northeast
of Jacksonville. There is some chance this will develop into a
tropical depression today as it moves slowly north-northeast; one way
or another the main impact will be widespread from along the South
Atlantic coast from Jacksonville north to Charleston. All of the
moisture with this feature will be east of Alabama.

Lots of action in the Caribbean; one disturbance will move into
Central America today before having a chance to reach tropical
depression status. Another strong wave is moving through the
southern Caribbean; upper air conditions will become more favorable
for development during the next 24 hours, and a tropical depression
could form. The latest computer model guidance moves this system into
the southern Gulf of Mexico in 96 hours. From there, it is way too
early to determine the ultimate destination. We will be watching this
one closely since it could become a significant tropical cyclone in
coming days.

DID YOU KNOW? Hurricane Hunting started on a dare in the middle of
World War II, when Lt Col Joe Duckworth took an AT-6 Texan training
aircraft into the eye of a hurricane. The squadron traces its heritage
back over 50 years, to the 3rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, Air
Route, Medium on August 7, 1944. From the very beginning, the squadron
began a globe-trotting tradition, with aircraft spread from Canada to
Florida to the Azores.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Lots of rain over Florida yesterday due to the
tropical disturbance; the total at Daytona Beach was 3.17", while
Jacksonville was soaked with 2.07". Hottest place in the nation was
Death Valley, CA with 120 degrees; coldest was Barrow, Alaska with 32.
Polebridge, Montana was right behind with 33.

...Summer Doldrums...

HEAT, HUMIDITY AND HAZE: Sometimes we call that Triple-H weather and
it is so common in the Deep South in summer. Actually, haze can be
common over much of the Eastern USA on a summer day.

Here in Alabama, not too much haze so far this summer. Heat has also
been comparatively reasonable. Just think back to this same date in
1980 when the mean ole thermometer at Birmingham Airport topped out at
105.

We do not expect to see extreme heat in Alabama in the foreseeable
future. I realize that is a relative term. For me, 90 is too much
since I am the hottest natured guy in the Northern Hemisphere. Anyway,
we think the ole thermometer will hang around in the lower 90s for the
next 5 to 7 days. Some places will have mid-90s such as Tuscaloosa and
other traditional hot spots.

RAIN IS THE MOST POPULAR SUBJECT: In summer, the ground (the first
couple inches of topsoil) can go from wet to dry very quickly, just in
a day or two, when there is a decent amount of sunshine and hot
temperatures. Even wind helps the drying process.
Those sneaky showers yesterday dumped some heavy rain on some spots.
There was 1.15 inches 9 miles south of Bessemer and 1.26 just NE of
Fairfield.

So, what is the outlook? Not very encouraging in the near future. We
keep the chance of a shower for any one farm or lawn rather low for
the next 4 or 5 days. Maybe a slightly better chance about Monday,.
The dew point is expected to be relatively low for at least the next
two days so the 92 degree high will not feel so uncomfortable..

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Bertha has overstayed her welcome. She
was several hundred miles ENE of Bermuda this afternoon. She will now
head NE over the open (and colder) waters of the North Atlantic
possibly giving a few whales a nervous breakdown. Meanwhile, a low-
pressure area over the SE Caribbean has not shown any ambition, but it
could later as it cruises westward at 12-25 mph. The low that was over
the East Gulf and was wetting down Florida seems to now be just east
of the NE coast of Florida. A strong tropical wave could possibly
become a tropical depression before landfall in Central America tonight.

LESS IMPORTANT STUFF: Only 2/10th of one percent of the lower 48 had
snow cover this morning—in the high country of the West. Deepest 365
inches in the North Sierra Nevada Range. 6.13 inches of rain on Marco
Island, Florida, south of Naples. Cold spots this morning 32, Barrow,
Alaska and 37 Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Have often wondered what the outside
world looks like to Little Miss Molly when we are walking. This
morning, I went in the master bedroom where she was taking her 3-hour
morning nap, woke her up and measured her height. She is only 11
inches tall. She gave me the strangest look. That means a small
shrubbery would look like a Redwood tree to her and the Old Crow Motel
has to look like the Sears Tower. No wonder she shies away from a large
dog along the way. Has to look like a bear to her. I have never seen
a little dog wag her tail so much. I don't understand how they can
control all their muscles that way. I tried to wag my tail and almost
fell. She gave me another odd look for that. Life goes on, so very
interesting.

...Another Hot Afternoon...

HOT AND HAZY SUMMER WEATHER: Temperatures today will rise into the low
to mid 90s across Alabama with hazy sunshine and scattered clouds.
Some of the cumulus clouds could form into showers or storms this
afternoon, but the chance of any one neighborhood getting wet is so
small on this end of Alabama we won't mention it in our formal
forecast for now. The best chance of a shower or storm today will be
over Southeast Alabama, closer to a tropical disturbance in the
eastern Gulf of Mexico.

That disturbance will bring very wet weather again today to the
Florida peninsula; places like Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville will
see heavy rain at times. That moisture field will move northward, and
tomorrow rain will be increasing over Georgia and South Carolina. Here
in our state, the best chance of a shower or storm tomorrow will be
east of I-65, especially near the Georgia border. Showers on the
western side of the state will most likely be few and far between.

WEEKEND FORECAST: We will mention the chance of widely scattered
afternoon showers Saturday and Sunday, but a good part of the weekend
should be rain-free with afternoon highs holding in the low 90s. The
deeper moisture will remain over the far eastern counties of Alabama.
The chance of showers and storms will increase by the first half of
next week thanks to an approaching front.

TROPICAL TROUBLE: Our disturbance over the eastern Gulf still has some
chance of becoming a tropical depression today as it moves slowly to
the north. One way or another, the main story will be the rain it
brings to the Florida peninsula.

Tropical storm Bertha, the longest lived July tropical storm on
record, continues to move away from land over the North Atlantic, and
is no threat to any land mass. The system is about 450 miles northeast
of Bermuda this morning.

A strong tropical wave is moving through the far eastern Caribbean; it
will encounter some hostile winds aloft during the next two days on
the journey through the Caribbean; if it can survive there is some
chance it could enter the Gulf of Mexico late in the weekend or early
next week. Another disturbance is over the Southwest Caribbean;
development is possible, but this one will be moving into Central
America during the next 24 hours. And, we note a strong tropical wave
is about to emerge off the African coast. Lots to watch in coming days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Tropical Storm Danny strengthens in the Gulf Of
Mexico off of the Louisiana Coast and moves slowly toward land. This
marked only the third time in 126 years that four tropical storms had
formed so early in the season (1886, 1959 were the other years). The
storm would eventually stall over Mobile Bay, dumping incredible
amounts of rain on the Alabama coast. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab
recorded 36.71 inches of rain, but not all the rain may have recorded
in the rain gauge at this location, so it is possible the rainfall may
have been underestimated.Radar estimates show that around 43 inches of
rain fell off the coast of Dauphin Island.

...Humidity Headed Back North...

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: It is evolving into a situation that is about
as typical as we can expect for mid summer. We are now in the peak of
what is traditionally our hottest weather. The average high
temperature for Birmingham reaches 91 on July 15 and remains at that
all the way until August 16. We prefer to use the word average instead
of normal, because the weather on most days is not normal. Humidity is
a big deal in Alabama during summer. We had a nice break from that a
couple of days ago, but it did not last long.

Low temperatures this morning were more typical of mid summer,
although we did have some low and mid 60s in the north. An isolated
shower formed over SW Blount County early this morning and some more
scattered showers formed this afternoon across Central Alabama. This
is due mainly to some moisture spreading northwestward from the East
Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Peninsula. A weak low-pressure area
continues over the west/central coast of Florida this afternoon and
out into the Eastern Gulf. It formed after our cool front pushed down
off shore.

We will continue to watch that just in case it tries to become tropical.
Otherwise, the outlook for Central Alabama is for conditions to become
more humid and with afternoon temperatures topping out between 90 and
93 the next several days. We do not expect a large number of showers
and thunderstorms, but we will have a few starting Friday and
continuing through the weekend.

OZONE ALERT: The Alabama Partners for Clean Air has posted a Code
Orange Alert for Jefferson and Shelby County for tomorrow. It is for
ozone and particle pollution.

IN THE TROPICS: Aging Tropical Storm Bertha was 380 miles NE of
Bermuda. We can pretty much forget about her, even though she will
turn toward the SE and then back to east tomorrow. We now turn our
attention to other matters. The disorganized thunderstorm activity
over Florida and the adjacent Gulf will continue to produce locally
heavy rain as it moves northward over the Peninsula in the next day or
two. Our main concern is an area of low pressure east of the Windward
Islands well organized and it may be a tropical depression. A
reconnaissance is in it this afternoon. A tropical wave was over the
SW Caribbean 300 miles east of Nicaragua and shows signs of better
development. It should move into Central America later tomorrow.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Some championship rain amounts over Florida in the
last 24 hours, including 5.42 inches at Ochopee, 2.60 at Tarpon
Springs and over 3 inches at Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach. Flash flooding
in Santa Fe floated an automobile out of control and left it atop a
sign that said, "No parking at any time." Hope they did not give him a
ticket. USA temperature extremes in the last 24 hours included 116 in
Death Valley, 36 in Stanley, Idaho this morning and 37 in Barrow,
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My apology for not even mentioning
Little Miss Molly yesterday. Ran completely out of space and time. I
heard from a lot of Molly fans that were not too pleased, but at least
they were courteous. I sure have spent a lot of time with that little
girl in the last 24 hours. It still blows my mind that I can throw her
balls across the living area and she can return them in no time flat.
We have done that thousands of times and she never is bored. Also had
some long talks with her. I am beginning to believe she understands
every word. She almost got out without a leash on yesterday. Close
call and it would probably have taken a police cruiser to catch her. I
do not know how a little puppy with such short legs can run that fast.
Her legs are almost blurred like the wheels on the stagecoaches in old
Western movies. Life goes on.

...Humidity Levels Slowly Rising...

MUGGY WEATHER RETURNS: Heat and humidity levels will slowly rise today
and tomorrow, but most communities across North and Central Alabama
will stay dry during the next 36 hours. Any afternoon showers should
be confined to the southeast quarter of Alabama, generally south of a
line from Mobile to Troy to Opelika. And, those showers down south
will remain widely scattered.

TO THE SOUTH: There is a broad low pressure area on the West Coast of
Florida this morning, producing very wet weather across the Florida
peninsula. We will watch this region closely; if the low center is
over the Eastern Gulf, there is some risk of the system becoming a
tropical depression. One way or another, the main impact will be lots
of rain for Florida, mainly the peninsula.
Computer models are hinting at some of the moisture from the eastern
Gulf working up into Alabama by Friday and the weekend, and
accordingly we have inserted the risk of scattered afternoon showers
and storms on those three days. The most widespread rain will most
likely remain over Southeast Alabama, however.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical storm Bertha is the longest-lived July
tropical storm on record; it has been out there for 13 days, and it
might stay on the maps for at least five more. Bertha could briefly
reach hurricane status again today before weakening in the days to
come over the cooler water of the North Atlantic. Bertha is now about
350 miles north/northeast of Bermuda, and is no threat to land.

Elsewhere, we are watching three waves scattered across the Atlantic
basin. One is moving through the Caribbean with little sign of
organization; the other two are in the Atlantic between the Lesser
Antilles and the coast of Africa. The most likely candidate for
development is near 12N/52W, and will be moving into the Caribbean by
tomorrow. This system has the potential to become a tropical
depression during the next 24 hours, and ultimately a tropical storm
or hurricane. And, the current track favors entry into the Gulf of
Mexico at some point late this weekend or early next week.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of sunshine for the Gulf coast today west of Panama
City with a high in the mid to upper 80s. Scattered showers and storms
are possible, however, tomorrow, Friday, and over the weekend. Sea
water temperatures remain generally in the mid 80s just off the coast.
About 9 to 11 hours of sunshine today; followed by 5 to 7 hours of
sunshine tomorrow through the weekend.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Heavy rain soaked much of Central and South
Florida yesterday; the total at St. Petersburg was 1.30". Hottest spot
in the nation was Death Valley, CA with 116 degrees. Lake Charles, LA
has measured 4.44" in the last 24 hours. Coldest spot in the nation
was Wainwright, Alaska was 34 degrees; coldest in the lower 48 was
Pahaska, Wyoming with 34.

...More Sunshine...

HEATING UP STARTS TOMORROW: We do not have very many pleasantly cool
July mornings in Alabama. After all, it is mid summer and approaching
what is normally our hottest time of the year. This morning there was
a distinct pleasant feel in the air all the way down to South Alabama.
Only the extreme south did not feel the lower humidity and pleasant
temperatures. Lows were in the 50s in the cooler regions of North
Alabama and even 58 as far south as Sylacauga. We list just a few of
the lows:

54 Broomtown (Cherokee County)
55 Cottondale, Ft. Payne, Hamilton
56 Moulton, Muscadine
57 Hanceville, Cullman, McCalla

We have a long list of those on our Weather BLOG. In the bigger
cities, it was 65 in Montgomery, 63 in Birmingham, 59 in Huntsville
and 69 in Mobile.
The much advertised cool front behaved almost exactly as forecast and
finally settled down near the Gulf Coast. It was stalled this morning
from near New Orleans to Mobile to Savannah. The interaction of the
front and a nervous Gulf of Mexico was causing a lot of showers and
thunderstorms across the Florida Peninsula over into SW Louisiana.
Part of that was due to a surface low over the East Gulf and Central
Florida.

Back home in Central Alabama, we expect more sunshine Wednesday and
Thursday and probably most of Friday. We have introduced a small
chance of a shower or thunderstorm by Friday afternoon, but the jury
is still out. One of our weather models has upped the chances for
Friday. Same story on Saturday—just a small chance for any one
community.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Bertha is finally leaving Bermuda
alone. The center was 260 miles NNE of that island. Meanwhile, a low-
pressure area 950 miles east of the Lesser Antilles is still being
watched. It has shown little change. In fact, conditions are becoming
a little less favourable for it to develop further at this time. That
is not unusual and could change later. This one is in a general
position that it could get into the Caribbean here in the next couple
of days. That is when our attention quickly goes up.

WORLD VIEW: Let us take a quick look at Egypt today. If you were to
place that country over a map of the USA, it would cover 12.5% of our
country. Cairo is by far the biggest city. The average high
temperature in January is 68 and the average low 48. In July, the high
is 94 and low is 69—about 2 to 3 degrees hotter than Birmingham.
Amazingly, Cairo gets only 1 inch of rain per year; Birmingham gets 54
times that much.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Buckets and buckets of rain over SW Louisiana this
morning. Water was running 2 feet deep in some of the streets of Lake
Charles. They got over 4 inches of rain quickly. Sulphur, Louisiana
got 5 inches, mostly in 5 hours. Lowest temperature in the lower 48
this morning was 37 in Yellowstone National Park and the hottest
yesterday was 114 in Death Valley. Coldest I could find around the
world, 94 below Vostok, Antarctica.

...Dry Summer Days...

CONTINENTAL AIR: An unusually dry airmass for summer continues to
hover over Alabama today, meaning another day with almost maximum
available sunshine and low humidity. Temperatures will reach the low
90s this afternoon, but the low dewpoints will make the afternoon heat
a little more comfortable.

Dry air is the story for the next of the week; we will forecast mostly
sunny days and fair nights through Friday with only a few fair weather
cumulus clouds in the afternoon sky. Humidity levels will slowly rise
as the week rolls along. By the weekend, we will mention just a small
risk of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm Saturday and Sunday, but
the weather will remain generally dry.

TROPICS COMING ALIVE: Tropical storm Bertha sideswiped Bermuda
yesterday, with the circulation center passing just 35 miles east of
the Atlantic island. Steering currents are rather weak and erratic,
but the system will slowly move away from Bermuda in coming days; it
should weaken slowly over the colder water of the North Atlantic by
the weekend and early next week.
Another strong wave in the Atlantic has the potential to become a
tropical depression today; it is moving steadily to the west/
northwest, and will be moving over relatively warm water with little
shear. Conditions, in fact, seem to favor this becoming tropical storm
Cristobal in coming days, moving in the general direction of the
Caribbean. Too early to determine if this will be a threat to the Gulf
of Mexico, or the Southeast U.S., but we will watch it closely.

And, we note the eastern half of the Gulf of Mexico is disturbed;
those storms are in the vicinity of the surface front that brought the
drier air to Alabama Sunday night. A broad surface low seems to be
forming in that region; it will move northeast during the next 24
hours, keeping much of the Florida peninsula wet, but that moisture
should remain well to the southeast of here.

GULF COAST WEATHER: The chance of a shower is very small along the
Central Gulf Coast through tomorrow; lots of sunshine for the area
from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores with afternoon highs in the
85 to 89 degree range. Scattered showers and storms will return by
Thursday, Friday, and the weekend.

TWENTY EIGHT YEARS AGO: At this time back in 1980, Alabama and much of
the southern U.S. was broiling in one of the greatest heat waves of
all time. It still rates as one of the hottest Alabama summers on
record. The hottest day of the summer was July 17th when over 80
percent of the state reached 100 degrees, and nearly one quarter of
the state reached 105F. The highest reading on that day was 108
degrees recorded in the cities of Bessemer, Aliceville, and Jasper. It
was 105F in Birmingham that day. Around the nation, the heat wave
claimed anywhere between 1,250 and 10,000 lives.

...A Break From Showers and Storms...

NICE DROP IN HUMIDITY: We are getting a break from showers and
thunderstorms here in the middle of July. That is not necessarily a
good thing. Even though we have had some good shower and thunderstorm
events lately, not everyone has benefited enough to breathe easier
about the drought.

Sunday's showers and thunderstorms were fairly numerous across North/
Central Alabama southward. There were not as many over the north third
of the state compared to the weekend. We have another long list of
rain amounts on the Blog. Just to mention a few of the heavier
amounts: 3.25 Oxford, 3.51 Valley (Chambers County), 2.02 Morris
(North Jefferson County), 1.75 Martin Dam, 1.25 Gadsden.

The long advertised cool front showed up as expected late Sunday and
Sunday night. It has now pushed into South Alabama. The front may sit
down and take a vacation close to the Gulf Coast and then slowly start
back north to bring another influx of humid air.

There is a distinct sparkle in the air today. All the haze is gone.
Visibility if remarkable and there is a noticeable drop in the
humidity. This is a huge exaggeration, of course, but I like to
imagine if I were standing on the front porch area of Guntersville
State Park, I could see all the way to Nashville and if I were sitting
on the deck in front of the restaurant at Cheaha State Park, I could see
to Dallas.

TEMPERATURES TONIGHT: Not exactly sweater weather, but we are calling
for an average low across North/Central Alabama tonight of about 62.
Remember, the temperatures we forecast on our 7-Day Planner and the E-
Forecast and the expected precipitation are aimed at the Tuscaloosa/
Birmingham/Anniston corridor. Up in the traditional cooler valleys of
North Alabama, look for some lows by morning in the upper 50s. We
might even hear of a 55.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Bertha was passing east of Bermuda
this afternoon, but it was close enough that a Tropical Storm Warning
was still in effect for that island. The center was about 40 miles ENE
of Bermuda and moving north. It should turn NE tomorrow. Sustained
winds were 65 mph. Large swells and high surf were hitting Bermuda and
dangerous rip currents were even affecting the east coast of the USA
from the Carolinas into Southern New England. A new disturbance was
1,200 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and growing a little stronger.
It could become a tropical depression at any time.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: 3.25 inches of rain Sunday at Hannagan Meadow in
the White Mountains of East Arizona. The elevation is 9,160 feet. The
summer monsoon rains have arrived in Arizona. I photographed that area
once. It is simply an opening in the spruce and ponderosa forest. It
had one country store and, believe it or not, they had moon pies! More
than an inch of rain also in the last 24 hours at Baltimore,
Washington, Scranton, Phoenix, Saranac Lake, New York and Burlington,
Vermont.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is fine, full of
energy and still bossing me around. I wanted to use this space today
to write about a little 11-year old Maltese named Kiwi who died about
a week ago in the middle of the night. Susan Lollar, from Pell City,
gave me permission to do this. After his death, an autopsy revealed he
died of cancer. Right up until his death, he was having a good day
and they took him on a boat ride which was his favorite thing to do.
Susan is heartbroken, because cancer has taken four important people
from her life, including her mother and now her 4-legged child Kiwi. I
will write more about this later.

...A July Cold Front...

Will wonders never cease? A significant cold front in the middle of
July? Well, it's true. And it made it pretty far down into Alabama
last night. Far enough to allow drier air to filter into the northern
half of the state. Dewpoints will drop into 60s today and into the
upper 50s by Tuesday morning! That will seem very un-Julylike. It
will also allows for some readings in the lower 60s Monday night.
Some of the usual suspects may make the upper 50s! Lots of
exclamation points in this paragraph for sure…

FINE JULY WEATHER AHEAD: Sunny skies and less humidity will be the
rule through tomorrow. In fact, we should be mainly dry through
Wednesday. An isolated storm might creep back into the picture by
Thursday. As moisture levels slowly increase by Friday on increasing
southeasterly winds, we will see the return of scattered afternoon and
evening storms for the weekend. It looks like a trough may redevelop
over the East the last week of the month, giving us above normal rain
chances. We'll take 'em.

WILL IT GO ROUND IN CIRCLES? Tropical Storm Bertha has not moved
very much since Friday. And what moving it has done has been in
circles to a great extent. Maybe Billy Preston was singing about
Bertha when we did the song "Will it Go Round in Circles" in the 70s.
This morning, bertha is moving slowly northward. It is not much more
than 100 miles from the island of Bermuda now and will pass about 60
miles or so east of it today. Tropical storm warnings are in effect
for the island and heavy rainfall is likely. Heavy surf of up to 15
feet has been pounding the south and east facing beaches. This will
continue until it begins to move away from Bermuda Monday evening.
Bertha now holds fourth place in terms of longest time spent as a July
hurricane. It will assume first place as the longest lived July named
storm. Today will make 11 days. Emily in 2005 holds the record at 12
days. Bertha may well be a storm into the weekend.

94L TO BECOME TD3? By the time you read this, the well organized
disturbance in the Atlantic about 1000 miles east of the Windward
Islands may already be tropical depression number three and be well on
its way to being Tropical Storm Cristobal. It will be over 27C degree
water (tropical systems like 26C or warmer) and in an area of low
shear (10 knots), so Cristobal will likely become a hurricane in the
next three days. By Friday night, it should be a minimal hurricane
threatening the Virgin Islands and northern Leewards. The GFS then
predicts it will be taken northward through a weakness in the
subtropical ridge and curve out to sea. The GFS is hinting at at
least one more eastern Atlantic depression in the next two weeks.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Up to six inches of rain was measured over
eastern Jefferson and western St. Clair County in Alabama as opposing
outflow boundaries collided over the Metro Birmingham area. 5.94
inches of rain was measured in the City of Trussville. Widespread
flooding resulted.
