...Watching The Tropics...

A MOSTLY DRY WEEKEND: This is a time of the year when a shower could
pop up on almost any summer afternoon, and we might see a few on radar
over the weekend, but they should be few and far between as a
relatively dry and stable airmass for summer covers Alabama. Afternoon
highs will be mostly in the 91 to 95 degree range, but low dewpoints
will keep the relatively humidity values low during the peak of the
daytime heat. The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow and
Saturday is only about one in ten.

Looks like the next chance of seeing an increase in the number of
showers and storms will come around the middle of next week as a
weakening surface front approaches Alabama from the north.

BUSY TROPICAL SCENE: A disturbance just east of Savannah, Georgia
still has some potential to become a tropical depression, or even a
tropical storm during the next 24 hours as it moves slowly to the
north-northeast. It all depends on the ability of the circulation
center to stay over water. One way or another, the main impact will be
the threat of heavy rain from Brunswick north to Wilmington. All of
this moisture will stay well to the east of Alabama.

The most significant tropical system to watch in coming days is over
the Central Caribbean; this has the potential to become a tropical
depression tonight as it moves into an environment more favorable for
strengthening. Most of the computer models take this system right over
the tip of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, and into the Southwest
Gulf of Mexico by early next week. While most of those models
ultimately take this system to South Texas or northern Mexico, we have
seen a few tracks that suggest a more northward turn in the Gulf.
Needless to say, it is too early to be able to forecast the intensity
and landfall point, but this one will bear close watching in coming
days for all interests along the western and central Gulf coast
region. The next two named tropical storms will be Cristobal and Dolly.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: More heavy rain for parts of the Midwest
last night; Des Moines, Iowa was soaked with 2.06". Cold spot in the
nation this morning was Kaltag, Alaska with 33 degrees. The low was 35
this morning at Lake Yellowstone, Wyoming and Stanley, Idaho. Hottest
yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 120.

ON THE ROAD: Sorry, Miss Molly fans, I am writing the forecast package
for the great Alabama weather legend, J.B. Elliott today, so no Miss
Molly story. Don't blame him, blame me… this is the day of the annual
ABC 33/40 summer intern lunch. Today I am writing this from the
comfortable working area of our mobile weather center, StormChaser
33/40 as we drive through rural parts of Chilton and Autauga Counties.
The lunch is at Jim's Pit BBQ, which is on U.S. 82 between Maplesville
and Prattville, near Billingsley. We will be stopping by Peach Park in
Clanton on the way back for some ice cream. Doesn't get much better
than this… J.B. will return Monday!
