...Eye On The Tropics...

It seems a lot more like September than July, if you look at the
hurricane tracking charts. We have two named storms and a high
likelihood that we will gain another today. There are signs that we
will see a couple of more tropical cyclones in the Atlantic in the
next two weeks as we appear to be in for an active period.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: High pressure will continue to be in charge of our
weather on this mid-July Sunday. Moisture levels have returned to
fairly typical values for mid-summer, and we will see those numbers go
up through the week ahead. But today, the sinking air associated with
the high pressure will keep us mostly rain free. An upper disturbance
will swing down the Appalachians this afternoon, triggering isolated
storms that could drift down into North Alabama, but they will be few
and far between.

THE WEEK AHEAD: All eyes will be on a potential tropical storm of
hurricane moving into the southern Gulf early in the week, but it will
not affect us directly. The counter-clockwise flow around the system
will help to reinforce the moisture flux into Alabama however, and we
will see increasing rain chances my Wednesday. These increases will
be further enhanced by a trough that is forecast to develop over the
eastern United States late in the week, sending a frontal boundary our
way. We could see fairly good shower and storm chances in the
Thursday-Sunday time frame.

THE TROPICS: Bertha is expected to become extratropical today over
the North Atlantic, but not after she has enjoyed a long, long life.
Especially for a July storm. No other July storm has ever lasted as
long (over 16 days) or been a hurricane as long (over 8 days.) No
other July storm or hurricane formed as far to the east either. But
fortunately, Bertha has not caused much in the way of havoc, just some
gusty winds and high surf on Bermuda. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed
Saturday off the South Carolina coast. It has been steadily moving
northeastward overnight and will be passing just offshore of Cape
Hatteras this afternoon. It is not expected to strengthen beyond
strong tropical storm intensity and it will head on out to sea after
today. Our attention is drawn to the disturbance in the western
Caribbean. Convection associated with the system has continued to
increase and a tropical depression is likely to form anytime. With
warm ocean temperatures and a low wind shear environment,
intensification is likely. But the system will run into the Yucatan,
which will weaken it. It is expected to re-intensify after it emerges
into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. There is generally good
consensus among the models that it will move into northeastern Mexico
or extreme southern Texas. The threat to the North Central Gulf Coast
appears to be minimal.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: It was a dramatic scene at the Kennedy Space
Center in Florida as a waterspout moved onshore near pad 39B where the
Space Shuttle Columbia was sitting. The waterspout dissipated quickly
as it moved onshore. No damage was reported. Several dramatic photos
were taken of the shuttle with a menacing looking funnel behind it.
