...Headed to Boston...

I will need your help. Heading to Boston for a few days of R&R. I
have scoured the guidebooks. Watched the Travel Channel. Know the
famous places to go. But maybe you have some cool, hole in the wall
seafood places on the Cape or a great little romantic Italian
restaurant in the North End where my wife Sally and I can go. Share
your travel tips and I promise to provide a little travelog on the
blog through Wednesday.

WHAT ABOUT BARRY? Of course, Barry is headed to Boston also.
Fortunately, he is a shadow of his former self. Not that his former
self was anything to write home about. Suffice to say, he won't go
down in the annals as one of the more memorable tropical systems in
North Atlantic history. He will be remembered as a Godsend for folks
in Florida and South Georgia, where steady rains are helping to tamp
out the wildfires across that area. Barry will emerge over the water
briefly near Jacksonville before moving over the Carolinas. The
remnant low will race northeastward, reaching southeastern
Massachusetts Monday afternoon. This spells trouble for our prospects
of catching the Yankees and Red Sox in Fenway Park Sunday night, and
makes for a messy day Monday, but maybe we will capture some images of
huge waves on the North Shore around Gloucester or Marblehead.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE? Barry provided a few showers to North Alabama
this morning, but they were rather isolated and light. Widely
scattered thunderstorms will develop with the heating of the day this
afternoon. An approaching front will trigger more of them tomorrow,
and the coverage could be pretty decent with some brief heavy rainfall
possible. In fact, the models hint that we could see some development
overnight, so don't be surprised. And the best chances for rain may
come during the morning hours, with a noticeable northwest breeze by
afternoon behind the front. In any case, overall rainfall amounts
will be light and we continue in the grips of one of our worst
droughts in a long time across North and Central Alabama.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks like it might be dry, but can't rule
out a shower in a northwesterly flow pattern. That pattern will give
us the possibility of a disturbance or two Tuesday and Wednesday with
accompanying showers or storms, but the chance looks small. The
Bermuda High takes over by Thursday, and temperatures will be heating
up
with daytime highs in the 90s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: The F4 tornado that roared through the
mountainous countryside near Frostburg, Maryland would be one of only
two F4s in state history until the 2002 LaPlata F4 tornado. The
twister skipped for 15 miles through the mountainous countryside near
Frostburg, destroying at least 30 buildings and damaging 100 others.
The F4 storm narrowly missed the city's downtown business district
about 945 pm. No deaths or serious injuries were reported in
Frostburg, due to ample warnings on television and radio and through
emergency sirens. Two people were killed by a tornado in rural
northeastern Pennsylvania.

...Hurricane Season off to fast start...

Predictions of a busy North Atlantic Hurricane Season appear to be on
track with the second named storm of the year already on the books by
June 1. That has happened only twice in recorded North Atlantic
hurricane records, in 1887 and 1908. According to my database, there
were 17 named storms in 1887, but only 8 in 1908. There are a couple
of caveats. Andrea certainly would not have been a named storm and
most likely Barry might not have been.

TROPICAL STORM BARRY: Our suite of modern weather prophets, the
global forecasting models, has been trying to conjure up something
tropical in the Gulf or western Caribbean for a couple of weeks. It
finally came true on Friday as the NHC started issuing advisories on
Tropical Storm Barry in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. The storm
almost was christened as a subtropical storm, save for a flare up of
convection near the center right before advisory time. By the time
you read this, Barry will be about 200 miles off the West Coast of
Florida, embedded in a strong southwesterly flow that will steer it to
the Big Bend area of Florida. The storm will lose the little tropical
characteristics that it has and move up the East Coast as a
significant low pressure system. But not before dumping 3-6 inches
and up to ten inches of rain in some locations across the Peninsula
and southern Georgia. Hopefully this will extinguish the wildfires. I
believe Barry will be a godsend because of this.

HOW ABOUT SOME RAIN FOR US? A few spots got rain yesterday across
the area. But the storms were widely scattered in nature. You can
expect more of that today, with a few storms firing during the
afternoon. If you are lucky enough to get underneath one, you can
expect heavy rain and lots of lightning. Now tomorrow, an upper level
disturbance is forecast to push towards Alabama. As it does, this
will enhance our shower and storm chances on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: We will find ourselves in a more west to east upper level
flow next week. This will open up the possibility of a few
disturbances bringing a chance of showers and storms from time to
time, but again no drought busting rains for us in the foreseeable
future.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: An F2 tornado cut a seven mile path through
London KY, hitting the downtown area and a shopping mall hard.
According to eyewitnesses, the tornado remained stationery over the
parking lot of the shopping mall for as long as four minutes! A huge
chunk of pavement from the parking lot was removed and blown over 100
feet. The tornado also struck a baseball complex. Teams hid in the
concession stand and one in a dugout, where parents shielded their
little leaguers with their bodies. Only ten injuries resulted, none
of them life threatening.

...Tropical Rains Should Miss Us...

LITTLE CHANCE OF BENEFICIAL RAIN: That does not mean that a few
folks will not get a nice shower over the next few days, but as a
general rule, we do not see a general soaking for Alabama any time in
the near future. Probably our better chance of getting some scattered
showers and storms will be Sunday. Otherwise, for the next five days
or so, any shower or thunderstorm activity will be widely separated.

No big chance in temperatures. Highs will be mostly in the mid and
upper 80s, but a few spots, especially in West Alabama, will slip in a
high of 90 or so.

We had a report from Southside, which is just south of Gadsden, of
only 0.08 inches of rain for all of May and only 2.02 in April. That
part of the state is in an extreme drought area as is about the NW
two-thirds of Alabama. At Gadsden Airport, only 8.68 inches of rain
has fallen in the last five months and their deficiency so far this
year has exceeded 18 inches. The governor of Alabama has announced a
Drought Warning for numerous counties in North and Central Alabama.
Low soil moisture is a major concern. Some rivers are near record lows
and the risk of forest fires is very high.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We had hoped that the broad area of low pressure
that formed over the NW Caribbean yesterday would bring us some much
needed rain. It was centered over the SE Gulf of Mexico this
afternoon. It does not have a well-defined center. A hurricane hunter
plane was going to check the area this afternoon. It is loaded with
moisture and heavy rains are expected to continue over parts of the
Florida Peninsula during the next couple of days. Some of our most
dependable guidance carries the center across Central Florida near
Orlando and then NE off the coast of the Carolinas. This afternoon,
widespread rain had overspread the south half of the Florida
Peninsula. There is a chance that some parts of the Florida Peninsula,
especially the central and south part, could get 2 to 4 inches of
rain. Even up in NE Florida and SE Georgia, the wildfires have been
disastrous. There is a good chance of some beneficial rain. Today was
the first day of hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center is
forecasting an active season with as many as 17 named storms and
possibly as many as 9 hurricanes.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A lot of folks are tired of the smoke
and haze in the air. I have a friend at Steele in North St. Clair
County. He said that because of the fires in that area, that places
around Attalla smelled like a charcoal pit. Have had very little time
to play with my little 9-pound pal, Miss Molly, today. I hope to make
up for that in the next few days. It was good to see the little Yorkie
out walking again—the one with the broken leg. He is as cute as a
picture. Life goes on.

...Code Orange Air Quality Alert...

The Alabama Partners for Clean Air maintain a Code Orange Air Quality
Alert for Jefferson and Shelby Counties for today, and really for the
entire area for particulate pollution, namely smoke from the South
Georgia and North Florida wildfires. At-risk groups (children, the
elderly, and people with heart and lung diseases) are urged to take
precautions for the day: stay inside and no heavy exercise or work.

RAIN DANCE: All across North and Central Alabama, people are hoping
for rain. Praying for rain. Some have even resorted to doing rain
dances. The problem is that we don't see any drought busting rains in
Alabama's future. Unless a tropical system in the Gulf was to defy
forecasting logic and come northward instead of northeastward this
weekend. More about that in a second. This morning, high pressure
remains to the east of us, keeping us in a southeasterly surface flow
that blows the smoke from Georgia fires our way. Then the morning
inversion traps the smoke and haze, making for unpleasant conditions.
It will break up as the atmosphere begins to stir with the heating of
the day. Partly cloudy skies with just a slight chance of an isolated
storm will be our weather word through Saturday. By Sunday, a front
will be approaching from the north and may give us a better chance of
showers and storms.

IN THE TROPICS: A tropical low is near the northern coast of the
Yucatan. It is expected to move northeast, reaching the coast of
Florida near Tampa Saturday morning. It will bring much needed rain
to South Florida, where water rationing is underway. I twill emerge
over the Atlantic and pick up steam over the Gulfstream, passing east
of the Outer Banks and weakening off the coast of New England.

NEXT WEEK: We start the week with the front lingering across Alabama
along with a chance of showers and storms. By Tuesday, the tropical
low will be moving off to the northeast and taking the trough with it,
and we will return to a pattern of widely scattered afternoon and
evening storms for the rest of the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: How many times have you been on a late flight
that was delayed, and just wanted to get home? Of just hoping the
pilot would go ahead and fly through the storm to get you to your
destination? On June 1, 1999, American Airlines flight 1490 departed
the Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport at 10:40 p.m. CDT for the
relatively short flight to Little Rock. The flight had been scheduled
to depart at 8:28 p.m., but thunderstorms in the Dallas area caused
general delays. There were 2 flight crew members, 4 flight attendants
and 139 passengers aboard the DC-9 aircraft as it left for Little
Rock. Flight duty rules were becoming an issue for the crew.
According to the NTSB report, American was working to get the flight
out as quickly as possible. Another looming problem was thunderstorms
that were expected in the Little Rock area on arrival. After
departure, the crew received weather information and commented that
they needed to expedite the arrival. At 11:25, the Captain commented
that they "needed to get there quick." The crew could see lightning
near the airport. The decided to land rather than divert. Read the
rest of the story in today's Weather Blog.

...Watching a Gulf Storm...

GULF STORM TRACK DETERMINES OUR WEATHER: It is not the only thing,
mind you, that will impact our weather in the next few days. The
future track of a developing low-pressure area near Yucatan will
determine greatly how much rain Alabama receives. One of our major
weather models brings the low northward through the Gulf to the
Florida Panhandle near Pensacola. Then it tracks across North Georgia.
Another model (the GFS) brings the low northeastward crossing the
Florida Peninsula early Saturday and passing into the Atlantic off the
South Carolina coast Saturday night.

We will watch it, but we believe the GFS will be closer to correct.
This developing low has caused quite a bit of excitement, because so
much of the countryside is gasping for rain. The National Hurricane
Center issued a special Tropical Disturbance Statement at midday
indicating it was centered about 75 miles SE of Cozumel, Mexico. NHC
says it has some potential for tropical development, but it may not be
more than a non-tropical low instead of a tropical depression.
Regardless, this system should bring heavy rain across Western Cuba
and Southern Florida over the next couple of days. This would be an
absolute godsend to the Florida Peninsula where numerous fires
continue and where Lake Okeechobee has reached its lowest level on
record.

Back home in Alabama, we expect a chance of any one spot getting a
shower or thunderstorm to be quite small until late in the weekend or
early next week. We may have to depend on a cold front finally
reaching the state by Tuesday.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Hurricane season officially starts at midnight
tonight. This is also a full moon night and it is called a blue moon
since it is the second time in the same calendar month that the moon
has been full. By all accounts this is expected to be an above normal
tropical season with 17 named storms, including 9 hurricanes. Out of
the 9, 5 are expected to be major hurricanes Category 3 or stronger…a
moderate risk of severe weather this afternoon and tonight from the
Oklahoma Panhandle across the west half of Kansas into South-Central
Nebraska. For tomorrow, a slight risk covers a large area from West
and North Texas NE across most of Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa and SE
Kansas…there has been so much rain in Texas the last several weeks,
that the entire state is no longer an even slight drought area.

FROM NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HUNTSVILLE: They issued a special
statement today indicating that some rivers have reached historic low
spring flows--the lowest recorded in more than 50 years. Some smaller
creeks have gone dry. Soil moisture in the Tennessee Valley is at
historic lows. This is the driest first five months on record at
Huntsville with only 10.52 inches of rain since January 1. A burn ban
is in effect for the national parklands. This includes the Bankhead
National Forest and Little River Canyon…very low yields of hay are
reported in area pasturelands.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was up at 4:30 this morning. Little
Miss Molly woke up around 6:30. Since I was already active, I got the
leash to take her for a quick bathroom break. That ruined her normal
routine, since the majority owner usually takes her for her first
brief outing. She raced through the house into every room looking for
the majority owner and clearly did not like the fact that I was taking
her out instead. Later in the day, she always wants to go with me.
Those little creatures can develop some strange habits, but I love
her. Life goes on.

...Tropical Action Ahead in the Gulf?...

Satellite images this morning show a large area of disturbed area in
the southern and eastern Gulf of Mexico, and this system has the
potential to slowly develop into a tropical depression during the next
48 hours. Whatever forms in that region should move to the northeast,
giving much of the Florida peninsula a good soaking by the weekend.
For now, we don't expect any direct impact over the northern
two-thirds of the state, but the surf will be rough with riptides
along the beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida by Friday and the
weekend. If the system develops into a tropical storm, the name will
be Barry.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Not much change in our weather today; a relatively
moist airmass will cover the state, and a few widely scattered showers
are possible, especially on the western side of the state. If you like
the numbers game, the chance of any one spot getting wet today is
about one in eight. Moisture levels will continue to slowly increase,
and we will mention a chance of scattered showers and storms tomorrow
through Sunday. The best chance of a shower will come during the
afternoon hours, and highs will remain mostly in the mid 80s with a
mix of sun and clouds on a daily basis.

A cold front will approach the state from the north early next week,
and that should give us an increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms by Monday and Tuesday. That front will probably wash out
by mid-week.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? We actually had a flash warning in Alabama
yesterday; that was issued for the southeast part of Baldwin County,
where a localized cluster of showers and storms dropped around 5
inches on the community of Lillian, which is north of Orange Beach,
and near the Florida border east of Foley on U.S. 98. Mobile was
soaked with 0.88", and over on the Mississippi coast the total at
Gulfport was 1.35". A few sprinkles were seen as far north as
Tuscaloosa and Birmingham late in the day, but those raindrops didn't
settle the dust in most places.

AT THE BEACH: A developing tropical system in the southern Gulf of
Mexico will bring gusty winds and rough surf to the coast of Alabama
and Northwest Florida through Saturday, but most of the rain will stay
to the south. However, there will be a few scattered showers and
storms on a daily basis from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores and
Dauphin Island through the coming weekend. Daily highs along the
immediate coast will be near 80 degrees, and the sea water
temperatures in that region generally range from 77 to 80 degrees.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Birmingham's rain deficit for the year is up to
14.84". The total for May is only 1.08", and we have experienced
measurable rain on only three days this month. If there is no rain
today, this will be our fifth driest May on record, based on data from
the Birmingham Airport.

SMOKE, PLEASE GO AWAY: We were joking this morning that we should
build a humongous electric fan, 50 miles in diameter, and blow all of
this smoke back into Georgia from whence it came. Not a joking
matter, of course, and we really feel for all of our neighbors in SE
Georgia and Florida where the forest fires have been a disaster. We
have several reports from around Alabama that this morning was our
smokiest time so far. The Alabama Partners for Clean Air issued a
Code Orange Alert for the greater Birmingham area today for
particulates, instead of ozone.

Our main concern over the coming days will be if anything falls in
the rain buckets. Some scattered light rain persisted over parts of
Central and South Alabama this morning, but it did little to
alleviate the drought pattern. We have some mention of a risk of a
shower or thunderstorm almost daily in our forecast. However, that
still does not mean we are going to get a widespread soaking. We
believe our better chance of rain will be later Sunday, Monday and
into Tuesday as a weak cold front pushes into this area. The front
could possibly reach Central Alabama by daybreak Tuesday. A low-
pressure area is projected to develop over the Yucatan and move NE
across the Florida Peninsula. Latest model runs have downplayed it a
bit, but it could still bring some decent rain to parts of Florida.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: A full moon tomorrow night will be called a blue
moon, because it is the second full moon in the month of May. That
happens rarely…cold temperatures this morning, 20 at West
Yellowstone, Montana and 23 at Randolph in extreme Northern Utah. I
have been to that remote part of Utah. It is east of the Wasatch
Mountains and in a broad basin, with an elevation over 6,400 feet and
a population of only 472…3 inches of rain at North Platte, Nebraska
the last 24 hours, big hailstorm in Denver yesterday, numerous flash
flood warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings over NE Texas this
morning, where a severe thunderstorm watch was in effect. The big
storms were moving into NW Louisiana.

AT THE BEACH: Cannot rule out a shower or thunderstorm at any time
through the weekend. Probably the better chance will be on Friday.
High temperatures 82 to 84.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Some neighbors brought their little
dachshund to our front door this afternoon. I thought Molly was
headed for cardiac arrest, because there was a small kid also and the
dog…in a few months, my little 9-pound pal will have her fifth
birthday and I am going to calculate how many miles she and I have
walked together. I think it will be a staggering number. She has done
a good job of keeping me active and healthy, not to mention the great
enjoyment she has brought to our household. She shows absolutely no
sign of slowing down. I hope she is still that way when she is 10
years old. Life goes on.....

...Still Looking For Rain...

Lets begin this morning with some notes from the weekly Crop Progress
and Condition Bulletin, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Alabama Field
Office issued yesterday afternoon... and passed on to us by the great
Alabama weather legend, J.B. Elliott...

* Drought conditions continue to worsen daily. During the past week,
no significant changes.
* Some Alabama farmers are putting planting on hold to wait for more moisture.
* Autauga County Extension Agent, Leonard Kuykendall, stated that
farmers who were not finished planting have stopped due to lack of
soil moisture. Ponds, wells and streams are drying up. The area is
over 14 inches of rain below normal for this year and and 47 inches
short since January, 2005. The first five months of 2007 will be the
driest on record.
* Mr. Kuykendall reported that waist-high corn almost ready to tassel,
that another disaster with corn is probable.
* In NE Alabama, Jackson County, Agent Donald E. Mann stated that the
county continues to suffer from extreme drought. The corn is starting
to twist up in the late morning instead of late afternoon.
* Henry County Extension Agent, James D. Jones, Jr., reported that
cotton and peanut plantings are approaching the end with little or no
moisture present in the soil. Pastures in the area are dry and short.
Cattlemen are feeding hay as quickly as it can be baled. Hay yields
are only about 50% of normal.

OUR RAIN CHANCES: We will mention the risk of a few afternoon showers
over West Alabama on a daily basis through Friday, but they will be
widely separated and really won't offer much in the way of drought
relief. Over the weekend, we expect a few scattered afternoon showers
and storms statewide, but the computer models have trended drier in
recent days as the better upper air support for rain will remain north
of Alabama.

At first glance next week looks like we will experience fairly routine
June weather, with warm and humid conditions and the risk of a few
scattered showers and storms during the afternoon.

WATCHING THE TROPICS: Hurricane season opens tomorrow, and right on
cue there is some hint of tropical storm formation in the Southeast
Gulf of Mexico. If something does develop, it will move northeast,
across South Florida, and into the Atlantic. This system won't bring
any rain to Alabama, but it will wet down much of Florida, especially
south of I-4.

A FEW DROPS YESTERDAY: Showers did form over Southwest Alabama
yesterday; they were seen as far north as York and Livingston in
Sumter County. Mobile's Brookley Field reported 0.12".

CHANCE FOR RAIN WILL GRADUALLY IMPROVE: It seems like it will never
rain again in Alabama, but we all know that eventually everything
changes. Already this afternoon we see signs of a better influx of
moisture out of the Gulf into SW Alabama, where some widely scattered
showers were occurring. Another ingredient we must watch is an upper-
level disturbance to our west. It may fight its way closer to Alabama
and be a part player in getting more moisture into our area.

I believe in being totally up front in weather forecasting. We have
not mentioned any showers through Thursday, but we cannot totally
110% say there will not be one or two. We have introduced a slight
chance on Friday and possibly a slightly better chance on Saturday.
Even then, they will be widely spaced and we cannot depend on a good
soaker. Our better chance of showers should be about next Monday and
Tuesday.

Our dear friends, the weather models, are hinting that the SE Gulf
of Mexico will become more emotional over the weekend and they even
show a low-pressure area moving NE from the Yucatan. We do not think
that is a hint of tropical development, but we will keep one of our
50 eyes pointed that way.

TEXTBOOK EXAMPLE OF A DROUGHT: Believe it or not, some folks have
challenged us that we really do not have a drought underway. In my
opinion, we can zoom in on Tuscaloosa Airport and make our case. In
the first five months of 2007, Tuscaloosa has only received 8.42
inches of rain making it the driest first five months on record. That
is an average of only 1.68 inches per month. That simply does not cut
it in a region of the country where we are accustomed to bountiful
rain and water supplies. If the pattern were to stay the same,
Tuscaloosa would end the year with only a little over 20 inches and
that would be 34 inches deficiency. We do not think that will happen.

LONGER DAYS: Since the shortest day of the year, we have gradually
gained daylight each day. Sunset today is at 7:51 CDT and sunrise
tomorrow at 5:39. We have now gained 262 minutes of daylight since
our shortest day. The afternoons will continue to add about 11 more
minutes before days ever so slowly shorten.

THE GREAT WORLD OF WEATHER: Too bad that our friends in Texas
cannot ship us train car loads of rain—they have it to spare…another
3.38 inches of rain overnight at Houston Hobby Airport and 3.86
inches at nearby Alvin. West Columbia, also in SE Texas, got 4.14
inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A parade of folks by here yesterday.
Brian Peters came by, our daughter and granddaughter, the pizza man—
even the little Yorkie puppy and his mom are back from vacation and
walked by…also about 20 or 25 people passing on the walking track.
Little Miss Molly registers a protest to every one, because she
considers them intruding into her little world. For a 9-pound puppy,
it sounds like she has the lungs of a hippopotamus. She can rattle
the windowpanes. She got a lot of loving from Brian, Debbie and
Mandy. Life goes on......

...Showers Possible Late This Week...

Our current forecast is not very optimistic on the subject of rain for
the mid-week period. We are going to mention only a few isolated
showers through Thursday; the last three days of May. Any rain will
help, but isolated showers just won't cut it. So what if we do get
some isolated showers but NONE of them occur over the Birmingham
airport, site of official weather observations for Central Alabama
since the late 1800s (which seems likely)? If that occurs, current
weather records indicate that May, 2007, would be the fifth driest May
on record with a monthly total of 1.08 inches.
Drier months include May, 1898, with 0.11″, May, 1936, with 0.65″,
May, 2000, with 0.88″, and May, 1941, with 1.05″. Should an isolated
shower occur over the airport site, the records show that places sixth
through tenth are tightly clustered between 1.15″ and 1.26″ - which
means that just about any rain before June 1 would throw the current
month out of the top ten driest Mays.
In researching this dryness, I was amazed to find that on 25 separate
months in Birmingham, the monthly rainfall has been one half inch or
less. The driest month was September, 1927, with only 0.03″ of rain. I
think it's safe to say that no tropical systems affected Central
Alabama that year. (thanks to Brian Peters for this research data).

SOME HOPE FOR RAIN: We will continue to show an increase risk of at
least scattered showers and thunderstorms by Friday and the weekend as
an upper trough and surface cold front influence Alabama's weather.
There is great disagreement among the various computer models we use
concerning the specific details, so confidence in the timing of the
showers is very low at this point. But, there is some chance that a
few Alabama communities will see between one-half and one inch of rain
at some point between Friday and Sunday.

AIR QUALITY: A code orange air quality alert is up again today for the
Birmingham metro area today; that means air quality should be
unhealthy for sensitive groups, like people with asthma and
respiratory problems. We still expect some smoke today from the
wildfires in South Georgia with low level winds continuing out of the
southeast.

AT THE BEACH: You will have to dodge a few scattered showers and
thunderstorms along the Central Gulf coast through Friday; otherwise
days will be partly sunny with about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine on a
daily basis. The water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab
reached 80 degrees late yesterday as the ocean continues to warm.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: More heavy rain in Texas yesterday; totals
included 1.67" at Austin and 1.47" at Houston. The hottest place in
the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 107. Alabama's warmest
spot was Evergreen with 91 degrees; Tuscaloosa, Muscle Shoals, and
Montgomery were close behind with 90.

ALABAMA COUNTRYSIDE CRYING FOR RAIN: Haze is a common ingredient in
summertime weather across Alabama, but lately we have had a lot of
smoke mixed with the haze. The smoke, of course, is due to forest
fires. Most of that smoke giving our atmosphere a bluish tint is
coming from SE Georgia and Florida. The wind should continue out of
the SE for the next several days, so we will have smoke at times,
especially during the mornings. The wind over Central Alabama today
was out of the SE at least up to the 10,000-foot level. The Air
Quality Index for the Birmingham area today was rated at 84 which is
moderate due to particulates.

Rain continues to be elusive to Alabama. A few showers were
developing this afternoon near the coast. With a continued SE wind
flow, the moisture has to increase gradually. Bottom line: we could
see an isolated shower or thunderstorm on almost any afternoon.
Weather models have mixed opinions, but one of our main models backs
off on the chance of any decent rain until later in the weekend. We
are still going to list a slight chance on Friday and probably a
better chance by Sunday. A weak cold front to our NW is struggling to
make much progress toward the SE. It may reach NW Mississippi by
Saturday morning. That would increase our weekend chance of rain
somewhat.

Here is an update on the 2007 Alabama rain shortage. First, the
actual amount, then the deficiency.

10.52 inches in Huntsville, a deficiency of 15.76
10.07 in Muscle Shoals, deficiency of 14.61
8.86 in Anniston, a deficiency of 16.07
10.28 in Birmingham, a deficiency of 14.42
12.81 in Montgomery, a deficiency of 12.07
8.48 in Tuscaloosa, a deficiency of a whopping 17.78
13.84 in Mobile, a deficiency of 14.62

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Amazing how much rain Texas and other Plains
states are getting. Another 2.60 in Waco yesterday bringing their
total for the month to 13.34 inches—their second wettest May. They
have received 24.26 inches in the last three months. Victoria, in
South Texas, has almost 30 inches so far this year—an excess of 13.63…
cold spots this morning 28 at Redmond and Burns, Oregon and 26 in
Golovin, Alaska…Anchorage got 84 inches of snow this past season—15
inches more than usual. Valdez received 275 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our little animal friends do not know
when it is a holiday. They are ready to play and go for walks on
Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas—you name it. I always let Molly
be the boss on the first walk of the day. I did a little non-
scientific research today and she made 63 stops to inspect things—
even little twigs or small pebbles on the walking track. I timed her
when she was sniffing one small blade of grass and she spent two
whole minutes like she is the puppy version of the CIA. The little
girl did not get in bed until almost midnight and she slept until
11:00 this morning, which is an all-time record. Now she will want to
play all afternoon, but I do not mind. Life goes on.....

...Happy Memorial Day...

I hope that you have lots of fun and barbecue in your plans for today
as we celebrate Memorial Day. The weather will cooperate, with partly
cloudy conditions prevailing against a hazy and sometimes smoky
backdrop. Temperatures will be warm, with the mercury rising well
into the upper 80s. Can't rule out an isolated storm, but the chance
is not great enough to mention in the forecast today.

FIRE DANGER: We continue to be in a dry and dangerous situation for
wildfires here in North and Central Alabama. Although humidities are
not especially low and winds not much of a problem, the tinder dry
vegetation presents a serious danger. Please be careful with any
fires, but especially over this Memorial Day celebration. Be very
mindful of campfires, cigarettes and barbecues, as well as fireworks.
It will not take much for any fire or spark to get out of hand.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: Air quality will be poor again today with trapped
particulates from local emissions and the South Georgia fires. I
would anticipate an Orange Alert like yesterday. This means that
at-risk groups (children, the elderly, and people with heart and lung
diseases) are urged to take precautions for the rest of the day: stay
inside and no heavy exercise or work.

RAIN CHANCES: High pressure off the South Atlantic coast will
gradually retreat northward during the coming week, and as it does,
our low level flow will gradually become more southerly. This is good
news in terms of the smoke that we have been dealing with as the more
southerly trajectory will eliminate the problem for us. But no relief
is in sight for South Georgia and North Florida where the wildfires
continue. The more southerly flow will also allow our moisture levels
to increase. A shower or storm or two may break out tomorrow,
especially over western sections and across the area on Wednesday.
Still, rain chances will be slim. They will increase just a bit on
Thursday and a little more on Friday. But it looks like the best
chances for rain will come on Saturday and Sunday. It is an evolving
pattern change, and things could end up different on the timing. But
if the precip holds off until the weekend, we might have a little
better chance at more widespread and heavier rainfall. Nothing that
will bust the drought, but a little short term relief. There are
signs that the pattern change may lead to more relief in the form of
additional rainfall during the following week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: Ten inches of snow fell at Gay Mills,
Wisconsin. Trees and power lines were damaged. Cold temperatures
followed across the northern Plains with 21 degrees recorded
the next morning at Williston, ND.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: If you think that the smoke event we are
experiencing from the South Georgia fires is bad, check out this
historical weather event from this date in 2003: smoke from forest
fires over Russia showed up as far away as the U.S. Midwest.

...Nice Holiday Weekend...

Partly cloudy skies are mixed with a good bit of smoke and haze across
Alabama this afternoon. But there is plenty of sunshine and warm
temperatures to go around. If the air quality were only better.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT TODAY: We are under a Code Orange Air
Quality Alert today thanks to particulates from the South Georgia
wildfires and general summer haze that is building up under high
pressure over the area.

PROSPECTS FOR RAINFALL: Well, they are not very good through
Thursday. We should remain high and dry through tomorrow. Then by
Tuesday, we will see isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms
popping back up starting on Tuesday, especially over western sections,
and then across the area on Wednesday and Thursday. They will provide
only very localized, short term relief to our moisture needs. Late in
the week, an upper trough will be moving east from the Plains states.
We have been expecting it to bring us a good chance of showers and
storms on Friday, but the morning run of the GFS holds it off until
Sunday. We will keep the forecast the same for now and await the
results of future model runs. But the encouraging sign is that the
GFS continues to show a major pattern change starting next weekend,
with a big trough of low pressure setting up over the eastern United
States. This, along with an influx of lots of Gulf and Caribbean
moisture into the Southeast could spell some relief from our drought
conditions.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Severe weather is limited to three small pockets
across the country today. One is over western New York and
Pennsylvania, where a severe thunderstorm watch is out this afternoon.
The other two are over Montana and western Nebraska. No severe
weather reports as of early afternoon. The ring of fire around the
high pressure ridge over the western Atlantic means a flash flood
threat across the eastern half of Texas up into Oklahoma. Coastal
flood watches were in effect for parts of Southeast Louisiana and
southern Mississippi as persistent southeasterly winds have piled
water up against the shoreline. Fortunately, the tides are subsiding
this afternoon and the watches were cancelled.

RED LETTER DAY: For many Alabamians, the date May 27, 1973 is
burnished in their memories
as a red letter day in the state's weather history. A strong late
Spring storm produced the longest track tornado in the state's
history. That storm struck the Bibb County town of Brent. More about
it in today's Weather Blog.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: When you think about the effects of a drought,
you mostly think about farmers. But other segments are affected also.
River rafting operations in Southwest Colorado were suffering as the
worst drought in 50 years was leaving rivers at July or August levels
and forcing operators to cancel rafting trips. Average snowpacks
across the region were at 9 percent of normal and seasonal
precipitation levels were less than 50 percent of normal. The Animas
River, one of the few undammed rivers in the country, had a streamflow
of less than 500 cubic feet per second. One year earlier, during a
good rafting season, streamflows were at 3000 cfs.
