...Headed to Boston...

I will need your help. Heading to Boston for a few days of R&R. I
have scoured the guidebooks. Watched the Travel Channel. Know the
famous places to go. But maybe you have some cool, hole in the wall
seafood places on the Cape or a great little romantic Italian
restaurant in the North End where my wife Sally and I can go. Share
your travel tips and I promise to provide a little travelog on the
blog through Wednesday.

WHAT ABOUT BARRY? Of course, Barry is headed to Boston also.
Fortunately, he is a shadow of his former self. Not that his former
self was anything to write home about. Suffice to say, he won't go
down in the annals as one of the more memorable tropical systems in
North Atlantic history. He will be remembered as a Godsend for folks
in Florida and South Georgia, where steady rains are helping to tamp
out the wildfires across that area. Barry will emerge over the water
briefly near Jacksonville before moving over the Carolinas. The
remnant low will race northeastward, reaching southeastern
Massachusetts Monday afternoon. This spells trouble for our prospects
of catching the Yankees and Red Sox in Fenway Park Sunday night, and
makes for a messy day Monday, but maybe we will capture some images of
huge waves on the North Shore around Gloucester or Marblehead.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE? Barry provided a few showers to North Alabama
this morning, but they were rather isolated and light. Widely
scattered thunderstorms will develop with the heating of the day this
afternoon. An approaching front will trigger more of them tomorrow,
and the coverage could be pretty decent with some brief heavy rainfall
possible. In fact, the models hint that we could see some development
overnight, so don't be surprised. And the best chances for rain may
come during the morning hours, with a noticeable northwest breeze by
afternoon behind the front. In any case, overall rainfall amounts
will be light and we continue in the grips of one of our worst
droughts in a long time across North and Central Alabama.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks like it might be dry, but can't rule
out a shower in a northwesterly flow pattern. That pattern will give
us the possibility of a disturbance or two Tuesday and Wednesday with
accompanying showers or storms, but the chance looks small. The
Bermuda High takes over by Thursday, and temperatures will be heating
up
with daytime highs in the 90s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: The F4 tornado that roared through the
mountainous countryside near Frostburg, Maryland would be one of only
two F4s in state history until the 2002 LaPlata F4 tornado. The
twister skipped for 15 miles through the mountainous countryside near
Frostburg, destroying at least 30 buildings and damaging 100 others.
The F4 storm narrowly missed the city's downtown business district
about 945 pm. No deaths or serious injuries were reported in
Frostburg, due to ample warnings on television and radio and through
emergency sirens. Two people were killed by a tornado in rural
northeastern Pennsylvania.
