...Watching a Gulf Storm...

GULF STORM TRACK DETERMINES OUR WEATHER: It is not the only thing,
mind you, that will impact our weather in the next few days. The
future track of a developing low-pressure area near Yucatan will
determine greatly how much rain Alabama receives. One of our major
weather models brings the low northward through the Gulf to the
Florida Panhandle near Pensacola. Then it tracks across North Georgia.
Another model (the GFS) brings the low northeastward crossing the
Florida Peninsula early Saturday and passing into the Atlantic off the
South Carolina coast Saturday night.

We will watch it, but we believe the GFS will be closer to correct.
This developing low has caused quite a bit of excitement, because so
much of the countryside is gasping for rain. The National Hurricane
Center issued a special Tropical Disturbance Statement at midday
indicating it was centered about 75 miles SE of Cozumel, Mexico. NHC
says it has some potential for tropical development, but it may not be
more than a non-tropical low instead of a tropical depression.
Regardless, this system should bring heavy rain across Western Cuba
and Southern Florida over the next couple of days. This would be an
absolute godsend to the Florida Peninsula where numerous fires
continue and where Lake Okeechobee has reached its lowest level on
record.

Back home in Alabama, we expect a chance of any one spot getting a
shower or thunderstorm to be quite small until late in the weekend or
early next week. We may have to depend on a cold front finally
reaching the state by Tuesday.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Hurricane season officially starts at midnight
tonight. This is also a full moon night and it is called a blue moon
since it is the second time in the same calendar month that the moon
has been full. By all accounts this is expected to be an above normal
tropical season with 17 named storms, including 9 hurricanes. Out of
the 9, 5 are expected to be major hurricanes Category 3 or stronger…a
moderate risk of severe weather this afternoon and tonight from the
Oklahoma Panhandle across the west half of Kansas into South-Central
Nebraska. For tomorrow, a slight risk covers a large area from West
and North Texas NE across most of Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa and SE
Kansas…there has been so much rain in Texas the last several weeks,
that the entire state is no longer an even slight drought area.

FROM NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HUNTSVILLE: They issued a special
statement today indicating that some rivers have reached historic low
spring flows--the lowest recorded in more than 50 years. Some smaller
creeks have gone dry. Soil moisture in the Tennessee Valley is at
historic lows. This is the driest first five months on record at
Huntsville with only 10.52 inches of rain since January 1. A burn ban
is in effect for the national parklands. This includes the Bankhead
National Forest and Little River Canyon…very low yields of hay are
reported in area pasturelands.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was up at 4:30 this morning. Little
Miss Molly woke up around 6:30. Since I was already active, I got the
leash to take her for a quick bathroom break. That ruined her normal
routine, since the majority owner usually takes her for her first
brief outing. She raced through the house into every room looking for
the majority owner and clearly did not like the fact that I was taking
her out instead. Later in the day, she always wants to go with me.
Those little creatures can develop some strange habits, but I love
her. Life goes on.
