...More Storms In Our Future...

What a miserable day on Saturday. Persistent low clouds, thick fog
and drizzle kept temperatures in the 40s and even some 30s on Saturday
afternoon. Just after mid-afternoon, it was 39F at Birmingham and
Gadsden and 42F at Tuscaloosa. Just to the southeast, where skies
cleared, temperatures warmed nicely, like they were supposed to
everywhere. While it was 42F at Alexander City, it was 60F at
Columbus, Georgia, just sixty miles away.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: A passing upper level disturbance has spread more
clouds into the area this morning. It is starved for moisture though,
and any showers associated with it will be isolated and on the light
side. But we will start the day cloudy again in most locations. The
clouds should not be as persistent today, breaking up during the
morning hours and highs should be around 60.

NEXT STORM SYSTEM: The warm up will begin in earnest on Monday with
southeasterly breezes pumping temperatures to near 70F and above in
many locations ahead of a developing low pressure system over the
Central Plains. The Gulf will be open, but the southerly flow will
not be as strong as with the past couple of systems. So the moisture
will not be as good, and as goes the moisture, so goes the instability
to great degree. Showers and storms will enter Alabama ahead of a
strong cold front Monday night, likely after midnight. It looks like
for now that the ingredients will not be there at the same time to
produce significant severe weather, but it is a situation worth
monitoring. Storms and rain will end from the west Tuesday morning.
Rainfall amounts will be around three quarters of an inch.
Temperature profiles will plunge on Tuesday with thickness values
supporting snow well down into Central Alabama by Tuesday night.
There could be enough residual moisture to produce snow flurries
Tuesday night across northern sections.

REST OF THE WEEK INTO THE WEEKEND: Wednesday will be miserable, much
like yesterday, with wraparound cloudiness, chilly northwest winds and
d temperatures. Readings will stay in the 40s all day with wind chill
values in the 30s. Temperatures will moderate into the end of the
week, although there will be a couple of decent freezes, especially
Thursday morning.

SIERRA SNOWS: Two to three FEET of snow is expected along with
blizzard conditions in the Sierra Mountains of California overnight.
Snowfall rates of four inches per hour were occurring as a powerful
upper low crashes onto the California coast with very high moisture
levels.

BRRRR!!! On this date in 1905, the mercury plunged to -18F at
Valley Head in Northeast Alabama. The reading would stand as the
state's record cold reading until 1966.

ON THIS DATE IN 1870[: Professor Cleveland Abbe began preparing the
Western Union Telegraph Company's Weather Report, a plotted daily
weather map issued 6 days a week. The cooperation of the telegraph
companies was critical to the survival of our early national weather
network. They provided free transmission time and priority handling
for weather messages.

...Nice Saturday Afternoon...

Clearing has been slow to occur across Alabama on this late February
Saturday. Temperatures in the cloudy areas have struggled, with
readings in the 40s commonplace. The weekend will be dry, although
there could be a few light showers on Sunday as an upper level
disturbance passes by to the north of Alabama. Temperatures today
will top out in the upper 50s. Look for 60s tomorrow. Lows tonight
will drop to near 40 degrees.

NEXT STORM SYSTEM: By Monday morning, intensifying low
pressure will be over Kansas. It will trek northeastward to a
position over northern Ohio by Tuesday morning. Skies will be partly
cloudy on Monday, and with a freshening southeasterly wind,
temperatures will warm into the 70s in most locations. Clouds will
thicken late Monday afternoon into Monday evening, with a squall line
of showers and storms move into Northwest Alabama after midnight.
This line of showers and storms will push southeast during the pre-
dawn hours. Fortunately, the system will be moving through at the
time of day where instability is diurnally at a minimum. Still,
strong upper dynamics could result in severe weather, so it is a
situation that will bear monitoring.

TUESDAY: Tuesday will feature showers and storms ending
from the west during the early morning hours. The rest of the day
will feature a good deal of clouds and a little drizzle or flurries.
Temperatures will only make the 50s and look for a decent freeze under
clear and calm conditions Tuesday night.

RAW WEDNESDAY: Conditions will be chilly on Wednesday as
a significant trough of low pressure sets up over Alabama.
Temperatures may not get out of the 30s in some locations,
but we will call for 40s since clearing should be underway, and our
late winter sunshine is strengthening.

REST OF THE WEEK: Thursday will feature mild
temperatures and dry conditions. By Friday, another disturbance will
swing by to the north of Alabama. It will deliver a reinforcing shot
of dry air.

DID YOU KNOW? That Wednesday's total lunar eclipse was
the last one we will see until December 2010. And we had to battle
clouds to see it to boot. That kind of makes me sad. Those were some
beautiful pictures on the blog after the event. The full moon
sure was pretty Thursday night above a thick overcast as our flight
climbed out of Chicago.

STORM ALERT 2008 TUESDAY NIGHT: Don't forget, our final
show of the 2008 Storm Alert Tour will be Tuesday night in Moody at
Bethel Baptist Church. The church was hit by a tornado on the night
of the Oak Grove Tornado, April 8, 1998. The show begins at 7:00
p.m., but come early as we are expecting a full house. Bring the
whole family! I hope to see many of you there.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Warm air moving over a dense
snowpack caused widespread fog that enveloped the New York City area.
The dense fog led authorities to close the New Jersey Turnpike for
several hours. Icy conditions quickly formed on roads as temperatures
dropped that evening, creating several massive multiple car accidents
including a 19 car pileup in
Harlem.

...Thankful For The Rain...

By the time that you read this, I will be settled into my
compartment on AMTRAK's train number two, the eastbound Sunset
Limited. I will be traveling from Tucson , Arizona back to New
Orleans. I will arrive in the Crescent City tomorrow afternoon late,
if the train is on time. It does not have a good track record
lately. But riding the train requires a little patience. The
experience is definitely worth it. I will post pictures and a travel
log through the weekend on alabamawx.com.

DROUGHT DENTER: Boy, the rains from this last system
were just what the doctor ordered, weren't they? Several widespread
rainfall events are just what we need, given that about the
northeastern third of the state was still considered to be in a stage
D4 drought, the highest category. Hopefully, that area will shrink on
this week's report.

YOUR WEEKEND: Some areas will get off to a cloudy start
this morning, but skies should clear during the morning hours. The
weekend should be high and dry, with highs in the upper
50s today and lower to middle 60s tomorrow. Lows tonight will be
similar to last night, right around 40 degrees. A little shot of
energy will pass just to our north Sunday afternoon and evening,
perhaps triggering a few sprinkles and dragging along a few clouds,
but moisture will be limited.

START TO THE WEEK: Monday should be a warm, springlike
day with highs in the 70s. Another dynamic weather system will be
developing to our west and will bring another chance of severe weather
late Monday night into Tuesday. By suppertime on Monday night, our
strong low will be moving from Missouri into northern Illinois. A
line of showers and storms will enter Alabama late Monday night, and
cross through during the overnight into the morning hours on Tuesday.
This is the best time of the day for the storms to arrive, because of
course; instabilities will be at their lowest. Hopefully, we will see
just beneficial rains again.

REST OF THE WEEK: Much colder Wednesday, when highs may
not get out of the 30s with a chilly north wind. There could even be
a few flurries, but nothing major. Look for a decent freeze Thursday
morning.

STORM ALERT TOUR FINAL STOP: We will be in Moody Tuesday
evening at Bethel Baptist Church for the final stop of the 2008 Storm
Alert Tour, our severe weather preparedness series. It has been
playing to packed houses all across Central Alabama. Get there
early. The show starts at 7. Bring the entire family. I hope to see
you there. And I may have a special guest with me.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: An F4 tornado hit the Scottish Inn
in Tuscaloosa. Most of the upper floor of the motel was sheared away
and a housekeeper was killed.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: The fourth race of the America's
Cup in Auckland, New Zealand between Team New Zealand and Team Alinghi
was postponed for the fourth consecutive day because of calm winds.
The culprit behind the calm conditions was low cloud cover that
prevented the development of afternoon sea breezes. Up 3-0 in the
best of nine series, Team Alinghi complained that the race should have
been held that day when winds reached 8 knots across the race course.

CUSTOM MADE RAIN EVENT: The widespread beneficial rain across
Alabama in the last 24 hours could not have been programmed better
even if we had put in a specific order and rehearsed the event.
Overall it had to be our best drought antagonist of all in our recent
rain episodes. There is just one exception: the extreme north part of
the state stood on the sidelines and had to be jealous. At Huntsville
Airport, the storm total was less than 1/10 of an inch. Numerous
places around the state had over 2 inches and a lot of places over 3
inches. We have a long list of rain amounts posted on the ABC 33/40
Weather Blog, so this short list is just a selected sampling:

3.65 Centreville
3.44 Clanton
2.58 Alexander City
2.09 Tuscaloosa Airport
2.90 Shelby County Airport
1.77 Birmingham Airport
2.78 Moody
3.04 Moundville
2.33 Hoover/Spain Park
3.06 Helena
3.14 Marion
3.20 Columbiana

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect for much of the area during
the night, as well as a Flash Flood Watch. All of that was cancelled
this morning and now our weather is turning more docile. A cold front
was entering the state this afternoon. It could set off a few more
showers this evening. Saturday will be cooler with a good bit of
sunshine. We think Sunday and Monday will also be dry, but there could
be a few isolated showers Sunday morning.

OUR NEXT RAIN EVENT: We keep looking down the road searching for
rain events, because we became accustomed to that during our serious
drought. It is going to be very interesting to see how the latest rain
affected the drought. Once a week the Drought Monitor is issued and
the last one had about 35% of Alabama still under an Exception
Drought. That will surely shrink somewhat. We may see some showers
starting again late Monday night, but the main show will be Tuesday,
especially during the morning when we could have some strong
thunderstorms and locally heavy rain. Do not be surprised to get
another inch of rain out of that event.

NUTS AND BOLTS: An amazing 6.20 inches of rain in Tallahassee in the
last 24 hours…Meridian 5.41…big snow in the NE…the Big Apple was
expecting around 9 inches…air travel was chaotic…coldest in the USA
this morning 20 below zero International Falls, Minnesota…a hot summer-
like 91, Laredo, Texas yesterday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Been so busy that I have hardly spoken
to Little Miss Molly for two days. This morning she walked into my
office and just sat and stared at me. Usually she wants me to put her
on my desk. Maybe that was her way of pouting and letting me know in
no uncertain terms to shape up. Life goes on.

...More Showers and Storms Today...

THREE CHEERS FOR OUR RAIN: Yes, I know, some folks are getting a bit
tired of the rain, but we still need it. The drought is still around,
although there have been some improvements. It will take a lot more
rain to bring the ground water levels up and to finish filling
reservoirs and streams. In fact, it may take several years of above
normal rainfall to accomplish all of that. We sure had some nice rain
amounts yesterday and last evening. We can't possibly list all of
them, but here are some selected totals:1.25 Oxford1.02 Marion1.42 ABC
33/40 Inverness Skycam1.80 Cottondale1.49 Mumford1.78 Mt. Cheaha
Skycam1.33 Childersburg1.31 WilsonvilleMore than 3 inches of rain fell
in parts of Sumter County in a fairly short time at mid afternoon. A
number of other locations received well over 2 inches.

WHAT'S AHEAD: We expect a good chance of showers and thunderstorms
today. Some of those will extend into the night hours and a few of the
storms today could possibly become severe. The Storm Prediction Center
had about the south half of the state under a Slight Risk of severe
weather for today. Clouds will gradually break up Saturday as it turns
cooler. We believe Sunday and Monday will be dry only to see another
barrage of thunderstorms moving into the area by Tuesday. Our good
rain events have come more frequently lately and that is a huge help.

STORM ALERT 2008: It was at Lineville High School in Clay County last
night. The final program will be Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the
Bethel Baptist Church in Moody. Remember, that is Tuesday night, not
the traditional Thursday. The doors open at 5:00. It is always a good
idea to get there early.

NUTS AND BOLTS: Tallahassee got 3.52 inches of rain yesterday and in
Mississippi, Jackson got 2.57. Extremes temperatures across the good
old USA yesterday included 31 below zero at Land O Lakes, Wisconsin
and Hibbing and Orr in North Minnesota. Would you believe a summer-
like 91 at Laredo, Texas along the Rio Grande? That equals a July day
in Birmingham.

==============================================

A SOAKER TONIGHT AND FRIDAY: Some of the weather guidance we always
look at has backed off just a bit on the expected rain amount across
Central Alabama from our current storm system now underway. However,
we still think that some communities will get about 2 inches before
the rain diminishes later in the day Friday. Mixed in with that will
be some locally strong thunderstorms. The atmosphere is rather stable
today. Temperatures this afternoon were only in the 40s over NE
Alabama, mostly 50s through the rest of the state, except 60s near the
coast.

A developing low-pressure area will pull a warm front northward
tomorrow. The low will move up across North Mississippi. Our
atmosphere will be more unstable tomorrow and we may have some strong
thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has approximately the south
half of the state under a Slight Risk for tomorrow.

Showers and thunderstorms should be numerous tomorrow morning, but
decreasing in number by mid to late afternoon. Winds will shift around
to the NW late Friday afternoon bringing us cooler weather but nothing
unusually cold.

As of midday, 2/3 of an inch of rain had fallen in Mobile. We got a
report of 2 inches on Dauphin Island. Most of the rain amounts across
Central Alabama varied from 1/3 to ½ inch with very little so far in
the Tennessee Valley.

THE WEEKEND: We think Saturday and Sunday will be dry with highs in
the 50s. We also believe our next big rain event will be delayed
slightly and occur mainly on Tuesday. Some showers could possibly
start late Monday night.

STORM ALERT 2008: It will get underway at 7:00 tonight at Lineville
in Clay County. This is the next to last program. The doors open at
5:00, so it is important to get there early to get a good seat. There
will be some prizes and some T-shirts plus some interesting and very
important stories on how you can stay safe during periods of severe
weather.

NUTS AND BOLTS: Almost 2 inches of rain overnight in Houston…bitter
cold again over the Upper Midwest…31 below zero in Land 'O Lakes,
Wisconsin…that was 20 degrees colder than the coldest in Alaska…50
inches of snow on the ground in Nome…Barrow is famous for its long
period of total darkness in winter…but today their sunrise was a 9:37
and it will not set until 5:47 p.m.…here in Alabama, the days are
getting longer and longer…woe is me because I love winter…our sunrise
tomorrow will be at 6:24, which is 28 minutes earlier than back in
midwinter…sunset will be at 5:37, which is 58 minutes later than our
shortest day.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly loves the rain. She
is just like a little kid who likes to paddle in the water. Often, she
will leave the walking track to splash through some standing water.
When she gets wet, she smells more and more like a dog. I guess that
is the way they are supposed to smell. I love their smell. On our last
walk, we saw about 7 old crows. Glad to see them back. They are a part
of our community as well as the community can and a few community
rabbits. She loves to chase both of those. Life goes on rain or
shine......

...Rain Today, Storms Tomorrow...

BENEFICIAL RAIN AHEAD: All 67 Alabama counties can expect a good
soaking during the next 36 hours. Rain should become widespread this
afternoon as moist air runs up and over a shallow layer of cooler air
near the surface, north of a stalled front over the central part of
the state. Due to the stalled front, there will be a very sharp
temperature gradient across the state today; Huntsville will have a
hard time getting out of the 40s, while Mobile should soar into the
low 70s.

Late tonight, the front will begin to move northward as a warm front,
and all of Alabama will be warmer tomorrow. This will lead to a more
unstable airmass, along with a healthy round of showers and
thunderstorms thanks to short wave energy aloft. While the best chance
of organized severe storms will be over the southern half of the
state, we can't rule out the chance of a few severe storms over the
northern part of the state; the primary threat will come from strong
straight line winds. Showers and storms will move out of Alabama late
tomorrow night as drier air moves in from the northwest.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At this time the weekend looks dry, with a clearing
sky on Saturday, and a mix of sun and clouds on Sunday. We are
forecasting a high in the upper 50s on Saturday, followed by mid 60s
on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Another dynamic storm system rolls into the state early
next week, with showers and storms likely from about 12:00 midnight
Monday night through 12:00 noon Tuesday. There will be excellent
dynamic lift with this system, and strong to severe thunderstorms will
be possible. We will fine tune the details of this system over the
weekend.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase a top of
the line Midland NOAA Weather Radio at any Handy TV location in this
part of Alabama for only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital
technology that allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm
sounds. Remember, this is severe weather awareness week in Alabama,
and this is a great time to buy a new Weather Radio for your home,
office, business, or church.

STORM ALERT 2008 TONIGHT: We are headed to Clay County tonight… our
annual severe weather awareness tour comes to Lineville. We will be at
Lineville High School at 7:00… the doors open at 5:00. This year, we
will focus on the 10th anniversary of the April 8, 1998 F5 tornado
that killed 32 people in Jefferson County. That same parent
thunderstorm dropped another smaller tornado later that killed two
people in St. Clair County. We will check on some storm survivors and
see how their lives have changed. We will also feature a story on the
heroes of the March 1, 2007 tornado that killed 8 students at
Enterprise High School in Southeast Alabama. And, some important
information about the ongoing drought that is impacting Alabama and
the Southeast U.S. See you tonight!

TWO WET DAYS AHEAD: We are in for two good rain events in the next 5
or 6 days, including an extended period of wet weather tomorrow and
Friday. We believe that a good part of Central Alabama will get about
2 inches of rain over the next two days and another heavy amount early
next week. All of this, of course, is welcome news. Some of the lakes
and streams have more water now than a few months ago, but the drought
is still not over.

Here is how the weather pattern will unfold. A strong high-pressure
area, centered over the Dakotas and Minnesota, was pushing a cold
front southward this afternoon. That front will be down into Central
Alabama before daybreak. Most of the colder air will be shunted off to
the NE. However, it will hold our high temperature in the 50s Thursday.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area will develop to our SW and move
eastward. It will also start pulling a warm front northward from the
Gulf of Mexico. This will spread rain across most of Alabama Thursday,
especially during the afternoon and night. We are also looking for
numerous showers on Friday along with some thunderstorms. Temperatures
will soar well into the 60s in the warmer air and we could have some
strong storms. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe
weather on Friday for about the south third of Alabama, roughly from
Grove Hill to Phenix City. All of the showers should end by early
Saturday with clearing. Sunday should be dry and then we expect
another round of rain and thunderstorms starting at some point Monday
night and continuing into Tuesday.

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE: It happens tonight, but we cannot guarantee
that you will get to see much of it. The beginning stage is at 7:43
p.m., becoming total at 9:01, the total ends at 9:51 and the whole
thing is over at 11:09. Possibly the clouds will be in and out enough
to where you can at least see some of it during the breaks.

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK: It is this week. The NWS, EMA, Red
Cross and a number of other organizations are joining in the program.

STORM ALERT 2008: Do not forget it is tomorrow night at Lineville
High School in Clay County. It starts at 7:00, but the doors open at
5:00. There is a ton of very interesting and useful weather
information, especially about severe weather and how you can be safe.
Get there early and you probably can get a free T-shirt.

NUTS AND BOLTS: 25 in DeSoto State Park was one of the coldest spots
in Alabama this morning…34 below zero at Devil's Lake, North Dakota
was the coldest in the USA…coldest in Alaska was 9 below at Nuiqsut…
big warm up in the Canadian Northwest. In the Yukon Territory at noon
today it was a balmy 34 above zero at Dawson…it was a mild 48
yesterday afternoon in Denali Park, Alaska and Stampede, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is a small 9-pound bundle of hair,
skin, eyes, short legs and a constantly wagging tail. Her name is
Little Miss Molly. I know you get tired of me saying this, but I would
not take a million dollars for her. When I get discouraged (very rare)
or running out of time, I go find the little girl, sit her on my desk
and have a forehead-to- forehead conversation with her. She looks at
me like she fully understands. I think is telling me that I should
have done what James Spann did once and take a time management course.
Life goes on with some ups and downs.

...A Good Soaking Tomorrow And Friday...

MORE CHANGES AHEAD: Today will remain dry, with a partly sunny sky and
a high in the mid 60s. Tonight, we will introduce the chance of a few
showers in advance of a cold front; the beginning of what should be a
beneficial rain event for Alabama.

The front should stall out somewhere over North Alabama tomorrow
morning, and a sharp temperature contrast is expected tomorrow. Up in
the Tennessee Valley, Huntsville might not get out of the 40s, while
Mobile could reach the low 70s. Moist air running up and over the
front should mean widespread rain for North Alabama tomorrow, with the
possibility of a thunderstorm in spots. For the I-20 corridor
(Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston), we project a high in the mid to
upper 50s tomorrow with periods of rain. The front will move northward
tomorrow night, putting Alabama in a warm and rather unstable airmass
on Friday.

As an upper air trough approaches, showers and storms will increase
again during the day Friday. Strong thunderstorms are likely by Friday
afternoon, but at the moment it looks like the best chance of
organized severe weather will be along and south of U.S. 80 (south of
a line from Demopolis to Selma to Montgomery to Opelika). Still, a few
severe storms are not out of the question over North Alabama as well ,
so we will be watching developments closely.

The good news is that it looks like 48 hours rainfall amounts of 1 to
2 inches are likely, with isolated amounts to 3 inches. The rain will
taper off late Friday night, and move out of the state early Saturday
morning. At this point the weekend looks generally dry with clearing
on Saturday and a partly sunny sky on Sunday. We are projecting a high
in the upper 50s on Saturday, with mid 60s on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Another dynamic storm system is due in here early next
week, and early indications from computer model data suggest a severe
weather threat will be possible Monday night into Tuesday. A sharp
change to colder weather can be expected by the middle part of next
week on Wednesday.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Coldest spot in the continental U.S.
yesterday was Embarrass, Minnesota with 31 below zero. A deep layer of
frigid Arctic air will cover the Midwest U.S. today; the forecast high
in Fargo, North Dakota today is 7 below zero. The forecast high for
Chicago is 8 above zero. The warmest spots in the nation yesterday
were Marathon, Florida and Yuma, Arizona, where the high was a toasty
80 degrees.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour comes to
Clay County tomorrow night; we will be at Lineville High School. The
show begins at 7:00; the doors open at 5:00. Come early for some great
prizes, and meet the ABC 33/40 Weather Team. Learn more about taking
care of your family during tornado outbreaks!

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of some encouraging rain events in
the forecast, although nor right away. We expect another dry day
tomorrow with a milder afternoon. There will be a good chance of
showers Thursday, increasing in number Thursday afternoon and Thursday
night. Thursday night you will also hear some rumbles of thunder. The
showers and thunderstorms will continue on Friday and some of those
could be strong. A good chunk of Central Alabama should get over 2
inches of rain from this event. The showers will taper off and end
Saturday morning followed by dry weather on Sunday and most of Monday.
We may be in for another good rain event starting Monday night. We do
not see any unusually cold weather all the way through the weekend. In
fact, by Sunday and Monday, we should have high temperatures in the 60s.

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE: Look for it tomorrow night. Thanks to Scott
Smith for reminding us and here are the times:

Partial eclipse begins at 7:43 p.m.
Total eclipse starts at 9:01 p.m.
Mid eclipse is at 9:26 p.m.
Total eclipse ends at 9:51 p.m.
The whole thing is over at 11:09 p.m.

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK: Even though the NWS is as busy as can
be with continuing storm surveys, it is being observed this week and
how timely. This is a good time to review your safety procedures in
case your community comes under a tornado or severe thunderstorm
warning. It is important that every family member needs to know where
to congregate when a warning is issued. Lightning is not used as a
criteria for severe weather regardless of how rapid the bolts are
shooting at you. Did you know that more people in the USA are killed
and injured by lightning in an average year than with severe
thunderstorms and flash floods combined? An average of 100 fatalities
and 500 injuries occur each year in the USA. Between 1995 and 2007, 22
Alabamians were killed by lightning and 121 injured. A lot of farm
animals are also victims.

NUTS AND BOLTS: It was 16 degrees colder this morning in the lower
48 than it was in all of Alaska…it was 31 below at Embarrass,
Minnesota and 29 below at Littlefork…the coldest in Alaska was 15
below at Nuiqsut…even good old Deadhorse had a balmy (for them) 9
below zero at midmorning…still 50 inches of snow on the ground at Nome
and Whittier, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: 12:00 midnight took Little Miss Molly
for a walk. She would not do anything but look around. Late to bed,
late to rise. 10:40 a.m. she gets up. 10:42 a.m. she is ringing the
little backdoor bell so furious and so fast that it sounds like an ice
cream truck coming down the street and looks like a professional boxer
pounding away at his punching bag. I am very busy, but I drop
everything because she is the boss. She was determined to take
forever. She stopped at every single tree and slowly sniffed around
the base of each one. She sniffed every rock. Finally, at the far end,
she did her main bathroom duty and we headed back. She stopped at
every house where her friends live. Life goes on.....

...More Storms Later This Week...

MORE WEATHER CHANGES: An interesting and active weather pattern
continues across Alabama for at least the next two to three weeks.
Today, we are in between storm systems, and we expect a good supply of
sunshine with a nice warm-up. After a sub-freezing start this morning,
we figure most communities will rise into the upper 50s this
afternoon. Some places over in West Alabama might even reach the low
60s. Tomorrow will be even warmer with 60s likely statewide by
afternoon.

We will introduce the chance of showers tomorrow night as a cold front
approaches from the north, and showers should be more widespread on
Thursday as that front stalls out over the central part of the state.
We could see a pretty sharp temperature gradient across the state on
Thursday due to the stalled boundary; temperatures might not get out
of the 40s near the Tennessee border, but 60s are likely over the
southern half of the state, south the front. For the I-20 corridor, we
are forecasting a high in the upper 50s on Thursday.

SEVERE WEATHER FRIDAY? The stalled front should move northward
Thursday night, putting all of Alabama in a moist and unstable
environment on Friday. Then, as a vigorous upper trough approaches
from the west, a round of showers and thunderstorms is likely on
Friday statewide. Some of the storms could be strong to severe; as
usual, the best chance of severe weather will depend on the amount of
instability available. For the moment, it looks like the best chance
of severe weather on Friday will be along and south of I-20. On the
positive side, most Alabama communities can expect one to two inches
of rain Thursday and Friday, with the heavier amounts over the
southern counties of the state.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: We are now forecasting a clearing sky on Saturday
with a high in the mid 50s; Sunday looks dry with a partly sunny sky
and afternoon temperatures peaking in the low 60s.

TORNADO SURVEY RESULTS: The National Weather Service has identified 7
tornadoes across their CWA (County Warning Area) yesterday. The
Prattville tornado was rated EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. EF2
tornadoes were identified at Summerfield in Dallas County, near
Collirene in Lowndes County, and at Cottonton in Russell County. EF1
tornado damage was found in the southern part of Clanton in Chilton
County, in Pike County about 12 miles south of Troy, and in Barbour
County near the community of Gaino. More survey work will be done
today and more tornado tracks are expected to be found.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour rolls along
this week; we will be down in Clay County Thursday night at Lineville
High School. The doors open at 5:00; the show begins at 7:00. We
feature some great Alabama weather stories, and give away some cool
prizes. Of course, there is no admission. Bring the whole family, and
get there early to get a good seat!
