...Rain Today, Storms Tomorrow...

BENEFICIAL RAIN AHEAD: All 67 Alabama counties can expect a good
soaking during the next 36 hours. Rain should become widespread this
afternoon as moist air runs up and over a shallow layer of cooler air
near the surface, north of a stalled front over the central part of
the state. Due to the stalled front, there will be a very sharp
temperature gradient across the state today; Huntsville will have a
hard time getting out of the 40s, while Mobile should soar into the
low 70s.

Late tonight, the front will begin to move northward as a warm front,
and all of Alabama will be warmer tomorrow. This will lead to a more
unstable airmass, along with a healthy round of showers and
thunderstorms thanks to short wave energy aloft. While the best chance
of organized severe storms will be over the southern half of the
state, we can't rule out the chance of a few severe storms over the
northern part of the state; the primary threat will come from strong
straight line winds. Showers and storms will move out of Alabama late
tomorrow night as drier air moves in from the northwest.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At this time the weekend looks dry, with a clearing
sky on Saturday, and a mix of sun and clouds on Sunday. We are
forecasting a high in the upper 50s on Saturday, followed by mid 60s
on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Another dynamic storm system rolls into the state early
next week, with showers and storms likely from about 12:00 midnight
Monday night through 12:00 noon Tuesday. There will be excellent
dynamic lift with this system, and strong to severe thunderstorms will
be possible. We will fine tune the details of this system over the
weekend.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase a top of
the line Midland NOAA Weather Radio at any Handy TV location in this
part of Alabama for only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital
technology that allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm
sounds. Remember, this is severe weather awareness week in Alabama,
and this is a great time to buy a new Weather Radio for your home,
office, business, or church.

STORM ALERT 2008 TONIGHT: We are headed to Clay County tonight… our
annual severe weather awareness tour comes to Lineville. We will be at
Lineville High School at 7:00… the doors open at 5:00. This year, we
will focus on the 10th anniversary of the April 8, 1998 F5 tornado
that killed 32 people in Jefferson County. That same parent
thunderstorm dropped another smaller tornado later that killed two
people in St. Clair County. We will check on some storm survivors and
see how their lives have changed. We will also feature a story on the
heroes of the March 1, 2007 tornado that killed 8 students at
Enterprise High School in Southeast Alabama. And, some important
information about the ongoing drought that is impacting Alabama and
the Southeast U.S. See you tonight!
