GOOD AFTERNOON: It is a dreary day across Alabama on this Saturday. It is the kind of day that I always associate with January. Of course, there are many nice January days, but this is the kind of day I think of when I think of January. At least it is mild today, with temperatures in the 60s across the area. You don’t have to go very far to find colder temperatures. Just travel about 80 miles to the northwest, or less by the time you read this, to cross a cold front. Temperatures peaked at 60F at Muscle Shoals at 6 a.m. this morning, and have been falling ever since. Dew points had also fallen ten degrees since daylight, indicating the drier nature of the air here.

SHOWERS: Most of the area picked up one quarter to one half inch of rain overnight through the morning hours. A line of showers extended across Central Alabama, just south of the I-59 corridor at late morning. Another band of showers was moving southeastward over Northwest Alabama. This line was just ahead of the cold front. The front should move down into Central Alabama by this evening, where it will stall out. The front will begin to move northward in response to developing low pressure west of Alabama. Showers will begin to increase again after midnight, continuing through the morning hours. They will continue to increase during the day on Sunday, becoming rather numerous by the afternoon into the overnight. Rain will continue into the morning hours as a cold front moves slowly across the area. Temperatures will remain steady or fall during the day.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure will build in quickly behind the front, with sunny skies expected on Tuesday. High pressure will remain anchored over the Lower Mississippi Valley through Wednesday, moving east enough to allow southerly winds to kick back in. Clouds should be on the increase by Thursday, with showers breaking out over West Alabama by early Friday morning. A small area of low pressure will bring rain across the area on Friday. Saturday looks to be nice, but the southerly winds will return again, increasing moisture ahead of another in our parade of weather systems. This system will bring rain back to Alabama by Sunday.

RECORD WATCH: All the major New York City airports reported record highs yesterday, including 61F at LaGuardia and 62F at Newark. It was 63F at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. The mercury fell just one degree short of breaking the record at Central Park. Today, temperatures are expected to be near 60 again in New York City before our same cold front drops temperatures in the Big Apple back into the 40s tomorrow. Today’s record at LaGuardia is 61F.

ON THIS DATE BACK IN 1999: A one-day January record of 87 twisters was set January 21, according to the National Weather Service. Eight people were
killed in Arkansas and Tennessee as twisters ripped through parts of both states. Springlike weather patterns produced a record 163 tornadoes over the United States in January, the most ever for the first month of the year. The total is more than three times the previous record for January -- 52 -- set
in 1975.

ON THIS DATE BACK IN 1985: North Carolina recorded its coldest reading ever (-34F) at Mt. Mitchell. All time record cold readings were set at Jacksonville, FL (7F) and Macon, GA (6F). It was the coldest Inauguration day in history as President Reagan was sworn in for a second term during cold and wind that resulted in wind chill readings of -30F. Snow fell as far south at St. Petersburg, FL. At mid-afternoon, Key West, FL was the only reporting station in the state above freezing! Here in Birmingham, the morning low was a frigid –6. It was –8 at Pinson and –10 at Jasper. Huntsville and Muscle Shoals dropped to –11.

...Wet Weekend...

GREETINGS FROM...BIRMINGHAM: Seems like an unusual byline for me, I know, and I am glad to be home. It looks alike a good weekend to stay in, with rain chances through Monday.

GREAT SLEEPING WEATHER: Last night’s cool and showery conditions made for a nice sleeping night. But now that you’re up, you might be looking for the showers to vamoose. Showers should continue this morning, and linger into the afternoon as a cold front settles down into Alabama and stalls across Central sections. The rain may drift south also later today and tonight, but it is destined to come back north again on Sunday as a warm front.

RAINY SUNDAY/MONDAY: Showers and a few storms will be on the increase on Sunday as the warm front pushes northward. Rainy conditions will prevail Sunday night through much of Monday. The rain will finally exit as a cold front moves through the area.

A SHORT BREAK: We will enjoy a brief respite from the rain on Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure dominates Alabama’s weather.

NEXT STORM SYSTEM: Our next weather maker will be taking shape to our west on Thursday. By Friday, the low will be just northwest of Birmingham. Showers and thunderstorms will spread across the state on Friday. We will be monitoring for the possibility of heavy rain and perhaps some strong storms with this system. Showers will hang on into Saturday.

SEATTLE RECORD WATCH: Seattle’s rainy streak was ended last Saturday at 27 days. The
standing record is thirty three days set in 1953.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Alabama was in the deep freeze as an Arctic blast held the state in its grips. Overnight lows across the state included: 3F at Mobile, 0F at Montgomery, -6F at Birmingham, -8F at Pinson, -10F at Jasper and -11F at both Huntsville and Muscle Shoals. Plumbers were busy answering calls from worried residents who had no water, a sure sign of frozen pipes.

SUMMER BEFORE YOU KNOW IT: Have you noticed the days ever so slowly getting longer? The sunset tonight will be at 5:06. That is 27 minutes later than it was on our shortest day of the year. We are already halfway through the winter. Weather people consider December, January and February as winter
While December was a cold month overall, January so far has been exceptionally warm. This may help you on your heating bill for the month. In Birmingham, the first 19 days of January have averaged over 8 degrees per day warmer than normal. Our coldest temperature has not been below 28. On 11 of the first 19 days, high temperatures have been in the 60s, including 5 days that were 70 or above.
We do not see any major change to colder on the horizon, even for the next 5 to 7 days.
IN THE NEAR FUTURE: A cold front will be getting closer to Alabama tonight and Saturday morning. Showers will spread northward through the state tonight and continue a good part of Saturday. The big question is, where will that cold front stall? It is expected to come through Central Alabama during the day Saturday and stall either in Central or SE Alabama. Then it starts back north. So, what does all of this mean? While we could get a break in rain Saturday night and Sunday morning, more showers and possibly a thunderstorm will come back Sunday afternoon and Sunday night and hang in there with us through most of Monday morning. During that time period, they could be numerous at times. We do not foresee any severe weather. Tuesday will be clearing and cooler.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: It was 4 below zero on this date in 1985 at Birmingham Airport. On the same morning, it was 16 below in Asheville, North Carolina; 17 below in Nashville; and 27 below in Chicago...this is also the anniversary of the lowest temperature ever recorded in the lower 48 states. It happened in 1954 at Rogers Pass, Montana with a low of 70 below zero. A friend and I visited that spot later that year and met the two old codgers who kept the official records. I will write a story about that one day. It is very interesting.
HOW IS THIS FOR SNOW? At Alta, in the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah, lots of snow lately. They now have 114 inches on the ground. There are 43 inches at Winter Park, Colorado and 291 inches at Lightning Ridge in a remote mountain area in Utah.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORD: Little Miss Molly had a ball yesterday afternoon. She saw three separate neighbors who all stopped to pet her. On our half-mile walk this morning, I was in a hurry to get home ad I tried to lure Molly back after she “did her business.” Nothing doing. She dug in and would not move. She is the boss so we went the whole distance. It is getting to where I have to make reservations with her to use my own recliner for a power nap. She has used eminent domain to seize that too. Life goes on. It is interesting with Little Molly around. JBE

...Wet Weekend Ahead...

Clouds will slowly increase across Alabama today in advance of a cold front that will bring showers to the state late tonight and tomorrow. The main upper support with the front will be well to the north of Alabama, so we don’t expect any severe weather, and rainfall amounts should be around 1/2 inch during the next 36 hours.

The front becomes parallel to the upper air winds and will stall out somewhere over north or central Alabama tomorrow night. This means clouds and some rain will linger into Sunday.

Then, a wave of low pressure forms on the front to the west, and should bring a large area of rain and thunderstorms to the state by Sunday night and Monday. Rainfall totals from tomorrow through Monday will be somewhere between one and two inches for most Alabama communities.
Colder and drier air slips in here for the middle of next week, but another wet weather system will likely arrive at the end of next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Brutally cold Arctic air covered much of the nation. Birmingham’s low was –4, a new record for the date. Some spots established all time record lows, including Asheville, NC (-16F); Chicago, IL (-27F); Jacksonville, FL (+7F); Nashville, TN (-17F); and Raleigh/Durham (-9F). The extreme cold actually caused television cable wires to shrink, resulting in service disruptions across the state of Virginia.

STORM ALERT 2006: We are gearing up for our annual severe weather awareness tour across Alabama. We begin at Hamilton on February 2… the show will be at the Bevill State Auditorium. All of the shows will begin at 7:00, and we will get your family prepared for the spring tornado season. You will also see some amazing Alabama weather stories!

BOUNCY TEMPERATURES: Our old thermometer is bouncing around like a beach ball and cannot make up its mind whether to give us a chill or balmy weather. So, here we go again with a nice warm up today. For the weekend and into early next week, it looks like highs will be in the 60s each day. We do not expect freezing temperatures tonight.

Last night the low temperatures were all over the chart. A southerly wind set in over the western and northern counties holding up the temperatures. Over in East Alabama, it dropped to 26 in Mumford with moderate frost. Gadsden had 27 and Ft. Payne 28. Over on the “warm” side of the state, the low was only 38 in Birmingham and Huntsville and 40 in Muscle Shoals and Decatur.

HOW ABOUT RAIN? It seems it is scheduled almost automatically every few days. We look for some showers to arrive late Friday, but most of them Friday night when we could also hear a little thunder. Look for a good chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm on Saturday. Our forecast for Sunday has changed. A front will stall in Central Alabama and head back north, so this will give us a fairly good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday and also through part of Monday. See our day-by-day forecast for specifics.

NOTES FROM ALL OVER: Seattle measurable rain on 29 of the last 30 days...all of those storms coming in off the Pacific continue to pile up the snow in the high country. The snow is several feet deep in the Sierra-Nevada range and in the Pacific-Northwest mountains...63 inches of snow this morning at the Monarch ski area in Colorado and 51 inches at Climax...looking for some cold spots: 15 below at Flag Island, Minnesota; 38 below at Arctic Village and Eagle, Alaska; and 64 below at Batamaj, Russia...79 at Wink, Texas the warmest yesterday...this last storm system sure did produce a lot of high wind in the NE USA, including a gust to 92 mph at Milton, Massachusetts.

1988 TORNADOES: There were 14 of them January 19 in parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas. Most violent was at F4 near Kosciusko, Mississippi. An F3 in Fayette County, Tennessee caused 3 fatalities.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have often wondered what it would be like if every family in the entire USA owned a little doggie (or any size dog). They sure do have a way of making you have a different perspective on life. Just think, much, much money could be saved on blood pressure medicine because studies have shown that dogs tend to lower your blood pressure and make you more at peace with yourself. I do not think I will ever have high blood pressure, because Little Miss Molly will keep it in check...when she got up this morning, she was stretching and yawning, but in an instant good mood. I have never seen a creature so enthusiastic and full of energy except possibly Dennis Altzimer, our music director at Huffman Baptist Church. Both Dennis and Molly are loaded with endless energy. Life goes on.

...A Big Daytime Warm Up...

After a frosty start this morning, temperatures will warm quickly across
Alabama today, with most communities reaching the mid 60s this afternoon.
Dry air means lots of sunshine; just a few high cirrus clouds should pass
overhead.

Moisture will begin to return tomorrow, rain will return to Alabama as the
weekend begins. Showers should begin to form after midnight tomorrow night,
with showers and a few thunderstorms likely on Saturday.

The good news is that we don't expect severe weather or flooding issues on
Saturday; the main dynamics of that storm will pass north of Alabama, and
the air will be only marginally unstable. Amounts of one-half look like a
good bet.

A cold front should stall out a little south of us on Sunday, but for now we
expect Sunday to be a dry day with any showers limited to the southern third
of the state.

Yet another impulse moves into Alabama early next week with a chance of
showers and storms Monday and Monday night.

BIG TURNAROUND: Many people remember the severe cold and ice during January
1982 across Alabama. On January 11 of that year the mercury dropped to one
below zero in Birmingham. Most folks don't remember the dramatic warm-up a
week later; on January 19, 1982 Birmingham's high was a balmy 76 degrees, a
new record high for the date.

WINDY: High winds across the northeast U.S. yesterday morning were
responsible for two deaths, and left 440,000 homes and businesses in the
dark. The two fatalities were the result of trees falling on cars. At
Boston's Logan Airport, flight delays reached 2 and a half hours. Winds in
Boston exceeded 60 mph at times.

180 DEGREES: We are not talking about a temperature here. Instead, that is how our weather has changed in 24 hours. Yesterday we had one of the most extensive statewide soakings in a long, long time. A huge chunk of the state received over an inch of rain and a lot of places got over 2 inches. For many, it erased the rainfall deficit for the first half of January and gave most places about a one-half inch surplus. We have not talked surplus rain in quite some time.

Today I traveled from Trussville to Hoover and the visibility must have been 80 miles or more. Of course, we can’t see that far because of the curvature of the earth, but it was sparkling clear—a model spring day.

TRICKY TEMPERATURE TONIGHT: We have been using 29 for our low temperature for tonight. That still looks good, especially for some of the colder valleys mainly east and NE of Birmingham.

However, a southerly breeze may set in well before midnight and hold the temperature up, especially over the West and NW part of the state. This could be one of those nights where Valley Head may be 10 degrees cooler than Livingston, Tuscaloosa and Florence.

Mostly sunshine is the story for Thursday. Brisk southerly winds will send the temperature into the 60s. Even warmer on Friday and more showers arrive Friday night. A good chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm on Saturday. A few of those may linger on Sunday.

A TERRIFIED INFANT: On this date in 1973, a tornado struck Cory, Louisiana. A baby was lifted from its crib and was carried airborne for a distance of 400 yards. Miraculously only minor injuries...on this date in 1973, 7 inches of snow fell across parts of North Alabama.

WACKY JANUARY: Big variations across the country. Enormous rains continue in the Pacific Northwest. The Desert Southwest remains rainless, grass fires in North Texas while up in North Dakota, Grand Forks has received only 1.6 inches of snow so far this month and January has averaged an unbelievable 18 degrees above normal.

ROAMING: A bitter 69 below zero at Ojmjakon, Siberia and the pressure has built to 31.11 inches...bitter cold in parts of Alaska, 45 below in Ft. Yukon and 44 below in Eagle...across the lower 48, the coldest this morning was an even zero at Cook, Minnesota.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly was really subdued all day yesterday. I assume it was because I had not played with her, but when she turned down 3 treats during the day, we were afraid she was getting sick. Last night I took her for her first walk and the minute we got back inside, she started romping and playing. So I guess she was semi-pouting because of the lack of playtime the last few days. I will see that she gets caught up this afternoon and tonight. When Little Miss Molly is unhappy, her pal is unhappy and that is me! And I do not believe in being unhappy. Life goes on.

Today will be a much brighter day for Alabama as sunshine returns in full force. This follows a soaking rain statewide.

Rain totals from yesterday included 2.46" at Muscle Shoals, 2.16" at Nauvoo (Walker County), 1.83" at Riverchase (ABC 33/40 Studio), 1.82" at Hamilton, 1.59" at Clanton, 1.54" at Jasper, 1.52" at Columbiana, 1.49" at Huffman, 1.31" at Northport, 1.30" at Anniston, 1.22" at Trussville, 1.20" at Tuscaloosa, and 1.13" at Gadsden. A few areas of light snow moved across North Alabama last night in the colder air, but there was no accumulation.

Birmingham's official rain total was 1.64" (based on data from the airport), bringing the total for the month to 3.52". We now have a 0.52" surplus for 2006.

With a sunny sky we expect highs in the low 50s today. The mercury will drop quickly tonight, and most spots will be a little below the freezing mark by daybreak tomorrow. Then, a pronounced warming trend begins tomorrow afternoon as we reach the mid 60s.

NEXT RAIN: Clouds will increase late Friday, and a few showers could show up by Friday night. We will highlight a good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday as yet another passing system affects Alabama. Rainfall amounts with that system should be in the one-half inch range, and severe weather at this point looks rather unlikely. Drier air returns for Sunday.

BIG TIME COLD: Brutally cold air continues to expand over Alaska, northern Canada, and over the pole in Siberia. In Fairbanks, AK, the high yesterday was -24, following a morning low of -34. For the moment upper air winds won't allow that down this way, but that might change in early February. Stay tuned...

==================================================================

RAINING OVER THE WHOLE WORLD? Sure seems that way today. At least it is
raining over the entire Alabama world. Virtually every square inch of the
state is getting a soaking, and, like magic, today's rain completely wiped
out the Birmingham deficit for the year. At the airport over an inch had
fallen by early this afternoon, so we now have a surplus for the year of
about 2/10 of an inch. Have not seen that in a long time! Here are a few
rainfall amounts from the 33/40 weather net as of 2:00 p.m.:

1.27 at 33/40 in Riverchase
1.71 in Hamilton
1.03 in Tuscaloosa
1.05 in Clanton
0.42 in Talladega
0.51 in Gadsden
0.78 in Huntsville

Radar estimates indicated close to three inches in parts of NW Alabama.

NOW WHAT HAPPENS? Colder air was poised at Alabama's western border to move
into the state this afternoon and it was doing just that. It is going to be
windy and sharply colder overnight. It appears that temperatures will drop
enough to change the rain over to snow flurries before ending late tonight.
We do not foresee any problems and the flurries could occur over almost the
north half of the state. Up in extreme North and NE Alabama, there may be
just enough of the snow to briefly whiten car tops and grassy areas. Still
no problems are expected. The ground is wet and relatively warm.
Look for sunshine to return tomorrow. Then mild daytime temperatures
Thursday, Friday and Saturday with highs in the 60s. After this storm
system, the next showers and storms arrive Friday night and Saturday.

ROAMING NEARLY WORLDWIDE: At Gunnison, Colorado, it was 18 below this
morning for the coldest in the lower 48...it was a summer-like 90 in Laredo
yesterday...would you believe that Phoenix is having their 91st day in a row
with no rain? And up in the high country of Arizona, Flagstaff has only
received 1/10 of an inch of snow so far...Dallas-Ft. Worth and Oklahoma City
did not get any rain from this storm system. More grass fires in Ft. Worth
today...getting bitter, bitter cold in numerous locations over on the other
side of the North Pole. One sample report 65 below zero in Ojmjakon, Siberia
and the pressure has built up over 31 inches. We keep watching in case that
comes across the North Pole and heads for our precious homeland.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Too busy today to play with Little Miss Molly
even five minutes. She has come into my weather office at least 20 times and
looked up at me longingly as if to say, "Can't you at least play ball for a
few minutes?" She should be used to that by now, but she never gives up. One
thing for sure-I will make it up to her later today and tonight...I have had
completely normal blood pressure all my life, but I really believe if it
were to become elevated, Little Miss Molly could bring it back to normal in
a heartbeat...there is no way she will permit me to become exasperated or
tense. That is not my nature anyway, but it is great to know I have the
added Molly influence. Life goes on.

...A Soaking, Then Much Colder...

A dynamic storm system will roll through Alabama today with a soaking rain
this morning, followed by a sharp change to colder weather this afternoon
and tonight.

Some thunderstorms could be involved, but we don't expect any severe weather
simply due to the lack of unstable air over the northern half of the state.

The rain could be heavy at times, however, and totals of one to two inches
are likely.

The rain will begin to diminish during the midday hours, and temperatures
should begin to fall in the wake of the surface cold front. Most places will
fall through the 40s this afternoon, winding up in the 30s this evening.
And, as the deep upper trough moves through tonight, a few snow flurries are
possible. The deeper moisture will be to the east, so the flurries should be
light and won't cause any problems.

TOMORROW: With the trough moving quickly to the east, sunshine should return
to the state tomorrow, but temperatures will remain chilly. And, a freeze is

likely again early Thursday morning. That will be followed by a warm-up
beginning Thursday afternoon..

WEEKEND PEEK: Looks like our next rain producing system will arrive as the
weekend begins. We will forecast increasing clouds on Friday, followed by
rain at times and maybe a few thunderstorms Friday night into Saturday
morning. At this point it looks like the rain will be over by midday
Saturday, and Sunday should be dry and cool statewide.

FRIGID AIR: Brutally cold air is moving into Alaska. Yesterday's high in
Fairbanks was 27 degrees below zero. Chandalar Lake dropped to 45 below
yesterday morning. In the "lower 48", Stanley, Idaho had a low of minus
21.

THIS WILL BE A WET ONE: Our weather continues to move along at a rapid clip
and we are going to have two more wet weather systems before the week is
over. This one coming up tonight and Tuesday is going to be very wet. It is
projected that Central Alabama should get around 2 inches of rain with some
locations even more. Up in NW Alabama, it could be heavier.

Rain has been spreading eastward all day and this afternoon scattered,
mostly light, rain was already occurring. The rain will increase late
tonight, especially after some thunderstorms become involved after midnight.
Rain and thunderstorms will be widespread Tuesday with rain heavy at times
along with some heavy thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has about
the south half of the state outlooked for a slight risk of severe weather
Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a cold front will be moving in by midday Tuesday and our
temperature will start a downward tumble during the afternoon. As it gets
colder Tuesday night, we could see a few snow flurries-mainly late at night
and very early Wednesday morning. They should not amount to anything across
Central Alabama. The better chance of flurries will be over about the north
third of the state. After a dry weather break Wednesday and Thursday, more
showers and storms move in from the west Friday night. It looks like those
will bring substantial amounts of rain also.

THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN SNOW: They got very little over the weekend down in the
lower elevations, but in the high country there was 6 inches on Newfound Gap
and 9 inches atop Mt. LeConte. They will get some more flurries Tuesday
night and Wednesday morning.

MONDAY MEANDERING: 16 below zero at Stanley, Idaho was the coldest in the
lower 48 this morning...a bitter 45 below zero at Chandalar Lake was the
coldest in Alaska...out on the western side of Alaska, St. Paul Island has
24 inches of snow on the ground. Western Alaska can get very heavy amounts
of snow. On this date in 1990, 65 inches fell in less than 2 days at Valdez.
They got almost 4 feet of snow in only 4 hours. Some ships in the Valdez
Harbor were sunk by the heavy weight of the snow...until 1990, no tornado
had ever been recorded in the USA on January 16. After it finally occurred
in 1990, tornadoes also occurred on the 16th in 1993 and 1997 in Florida.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure have spent a lot of time with Little Miss
Molly over the weekend with numerous ballgames and chasing each other. On a
late night walk in the faint light, Molly thought she saw two "rabbits." She
always reacts instantly and was headed toward the "rabbits" at breakneck
speed. I knew they weren't real, but I just wanted to entertain her. When
she got within about 5 feet and they didn't move, she realized they were
little concrete lawn fixtures. She looked aggravated that I laughed so
much...a sad note...one of our close neighbors had to "put down" their very
lovable dog a day or so ago. He had gotten old, but he sure was good
company. Life goes on, but it can't go on forever.
