...Cooler Air On The Way...

Some refreshing air is on the way to Alabama on this Sunday morning
behind a cold front that will pass through the state today. The front
will also signal a change to drier, but tropical developments could
spell some wet weather later this week.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Rain will be possible this morning across North and
Central Alabama until the front passes. Storms will be likely over
southern sections, ahead of the front. Readings over North and
Central Alabama will be limited to the 60s today. Clouds should begin
to break up behind the front this afternoon with some sunshine late in
the day. Skies will clear and winds will diminish tonight, allowing
the mercury to drop into the upper 40s. There could be a little
patchy fog toward morning.

MONDAY-WEDNESDAY: High pressure will be in firm control of Alabama's
weather into midweek. An upper level trough will continue to
transport cooler air into Alabama through late Monday. Highs on
Monday will only make the lower 70s, despite brilliant sunshine. Lows
Monday night will be on the cool side again, averaging around 50
degrees, with the normally colder spots in the 40s once again.
Tuesday has the earmarks of being a perfect day, with lots of sunshine
and highs in the upper 70s. 80s will return on Wednesday.

LATE WEEK/HOLIDAY WEEKEND: The next paragraph will discuss the
possibility of tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico this week.
That development could greatly influence our weather. This forecast
is based on that solution. Clouds will be on the increase by early
Thursday as the low in the Gulf plods northward. Winds will freshen
out of the east and scattered showers will develop. The low could be
somewhere between New Orleans and Destin by Friday morning. This
could spread increasing rain into Alabama by Friday and over the
weekend. There is a lot of uncertainty in this forecast for now.

EYE ON THE TROPICS: May tropical storms are rare events. There have
only been 17 since 1900. There have been nine since 1950. There has
been one in May each of the last two years. We will be watching the
Gulf over the next ten days as there appears to be an opportunity for
something to get started there. Nearly every model , including the
GFS, NAM, European, UKMET and NOGAPS all show a low developing early
in the week near Cuba and moving slowly northward into the Gulf of
Mexico. It likely would not start out being tropical in nature, but
there are indications that it will become a hybrid or tropical system
and could affect the northern Gulf Coast by late in the week. This
could bring very beneficial rains to a parched South Florida. It
could also bring substantial rains to Alabama and parts of the Deep
South by late in the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1883: Massive flooding in the Black Hills of South
Dakota caused over a million dollars of damage at Rapid City. Heavy
spring snowstorms led to flooding that destroyed most of the city of
Deadwood in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Four people died.

...Strong Storms Today...

Storms were getting an early start across Alabama on this Saturday. A
warm, moist airmass is in place relatively cool air aloft is leading
to decent instability. Thunderstorms developed by mid-morning with
heavy rain and lots of lightning. A cold front was approaching
Northwest Tennessee this afternoon. It will push into North Alabama
overnight and through central sections by midnight. Showers and
storms will form through the afternoon and evening ahead of the
approaching cold front. Some of the storms may become severe at times
and flooding could be a problem. Flash flood watches are in effect.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Rain will linger through the morning hours on
Sunday in the wake of the cold front. Cooler and drier air will start
flowing into the state during the morning. Temperatures will be
limited to the upper 60s with a northerly breeze. Skies will clear
late in the day, setting the stage for a comfortably cool night. Lows
by Monday morning will be in the upper 40s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday should be a sunny and cool day, with highs in
the lower 70s. We will drop back into the 50 degree range Monday
night. Then Tuesday will be a nearly perfect day, with highs in the
upper 70s. Seasonably warm and dry conditions will prevail Wednesday
and Thursday. Rain could move into the picture late in the week based
on developments in the Gulf.

DID YOU KNOW…that in May…the National Weather Service Birmingham has
the best overall tornado warning statistics in the NWS Southern
Region. The meteorologists at the Shelby County Airport rank number
one in the region in tornado warning lead time, at an amazing 33
minutes. You heard me right: over half an hour. Their probability
of detection (POD) is 88% for the month, meaning that they had a
tornado warning in effect for 88% of the tornadoes that were observed
in their County Warning Area in the month so far. That ranks second
in the Southern Region. Their false alarm rate (FAR) is 74%. That is
fourth in the region. The Federal goal for 2009 for FAR is 72%, so
BMX is just slightly off that goal. The goal for POD is 69%, so they
are well above goal.

TROPICALLY SPEAKING: We will be keeping a careful eye on the Gulf of
Mexico over the next week to ten days as unsettled conditions could
promote the formation of a low pressure system. The low could
eventually take on tropical characteristics. By Tuesday, low pressure
may form near Cuba and drift over the southeastern Gulf before
beginning a northwestward drift. It could affect parts of the
northern Gulf coast as a depression or weak tropical storm by next
weekend. The system could help the serious drought conditions in
South Florida. That would be a plus. We could see increasing rain
amounts late in the week if this solution verifies.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: From record low to record high on the same
day. At Sioux City IA, the morning low of 33 set a record while the
temperature soared to a record-tying high of 91 in the afternoon.
Other record highs across the country on this warm date included San
Francisco, CA (city) with 94; Phoenix, AZ with 106 and Hastings, NE
with 91. Meanwhile, record low temperatures were recorded across the
Midwest, Southeast and Plains that morning, including 33 at Lexington
KY and 35 at Louisville KY. It was 32 in Cincinnati OH to establish a
record, breaking the old mark by 4 degrees.

...Storms Likely Today...

Pulse type thunderstorms developed Friday afternoon in a warm and
moist airmass across Alabama. Most of the activity was east of I-65.
A few of the storms briefly became severe as they intensified quickly
before raining themselves out. They produced brief heavy rain,
tremendous lightning and a little small hail. Dime sized hail was
reported in Montevallo. A house was struck by lightning in Talladega
County near Lincoln.

Numerous storms moved into East Alabama during the evening, a gift of
the Atlantic sea breeze, shipped all the way in from places like
Savannah and Brunswick. Those storms laid down some boundaries that
could serve as focuses for storm development by late morning over East
Alabama. Skies will likely start out cloudy in most spots this
morning, but expect some sunshine by mid-morning. Temperatures will
warm into the lower 80s by late morning and storms will start to form.

COLD FRONT AHEAD: A strong cold front is over the northwestern corner
of Arkansas this morning. It will move southeastward during the day,
reaching the Northwest Corner of Alabama by this evening. This
feature will act as a spark to produce numerous thunderstorm s this
afternoon. Despite a warm and moist airmass and decent forcing,
storms will have a hard time getting organized today, consisting
primarily of multicellular storms. A few of them will become severe
at times today. Finally, a line of storms should push through the
state during the afternoon and evening hours ahead of the front.
There will be a good chance of rain and a few embedded storms during
the evening and into the overnight as the upper trough rotates into
Alabama.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Cooler and drier air will begin filtering into
Alabama overnight. Lows by morning will drop into the upper 50s.
Rain and a few embedded storms will linger into Sunday morning, but
they should diminish fairly quickly as the morning wears on. Highs on
Sunday will be limited to the upper 60s, quite a change from the past
several days. Skies will begin to clear late in the day.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Get ready for some really refreshing air by early
Monday morning as high pressure takes control of our weather. Lows
Monday morning will be in the upper 40s on average across Central
Alabama. A few colder spots will see lower 40s. Monday will be a
beautiful sunny day, with highs in the lower 70s. Tuesday should be a
nearly perfect day, with lots of sunshine and highs in the upper 70s,
after a morning start around 50 degrees. Seasonal weather will be on
the menu for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Late in the week, we
will be watching the Gulf for the possibility of some tropical
development.

ON THIS DATE IN 1874: An ill-designed and poorly constructed dam on
the Mill River in Massachusetts burst, sending a twenty foot wall of
water through five communities downstream. A total of 139 people died
in the disaster, which was the worst flood related disaster in U.S.
history up to that time. Over 600 million gallons of water were
released through the breach. Author Elizabeth Sharpe chronicled the
disaster in her 2004 book "In the Shadow of the Dam."

...Pleasant Changes Ahead...

A STORMY SATURDAY: We are in for some pleasant changes in our weather
starting late in the weekend and extending into early next week. But
first we must face the reality of some more showers and thunderstorms
seemingly a habit in recent weeks. There will be a cold front
involved, although we should call that a cool front. By Saturday
morning, the front will be approaching NW Arkansas with a fairly
strong high-pressure system over the Dakotas. By nightfall Saturday,
the front should be at the NW corner of Alabama and by Sunday morning
down into Central Alabama. Here is how we think the scenario will
unfold:

Some scattered thunderstorms tonight, but not real numerous. On
Saturday, the showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous by
afternoon and continue at night. A few of those storms could be strong
and rain will be locally heavy at times. The wind should shift around
to NW later Saturday night and Sunday will be noticeably cooler. Some
rain and some thunderstorms will persist in the cooler air Sunday
morning, but they should diminish by afternoon. Now, the delightful
part: both Monday and Tuesday there should be mostly sunshine with
much lower humidity and some cool mornings. We figure lows will be in
the upper 40s across Central Alabama, but look for some temperatures
as low as 42 to 45 in the NE Alabama valleys. The highs will be in the
70s those two days. Not bad at all for the middle of May.

STILL KEEPING THE DROUGHT AT BAY: Some very encouraging news about
rain amounts so far this year. At Anniston Airport, 6.18 inches so far
this month brings the total for the year to 25 inches, which is 6.50
inches more than at the same time last year. In the Springville area
on Simmons Mountain, 6.31 inches of rain has fallen so far this month
bringing the total for the year to 28 inches. Up in NE Alabama at
Scrougout in the NE corner of Etowah County, 7.43 inches in the first
6 days of May and over 34 inches for the year to date. That is the
best start that Vic Bell, the 33/40 Skywatcher, can remember.

THE REGIONS CLASSIC: This afternoon should be mostly dry for the big
golf tournament in Birmingham. Saturday does not look good, but we
believe that most of the heavier showers and storms will diminish in
time for Sunday afternoon play.

SUMMER NIGHTS IN ALABAMA: Most of the time, especially in June, July
and August, an ocean of warm humid air blankets Alabama and
thunderstorms can persist well into the night. Lightning is
frightening, but it is still pretty. Last night a big thunderstorm
stalled over the NW corner of Etowah County. Last night I could see
that lightning from my yard, which was 50 air miles away.

SEVERE WEATHER: Another risk of severe weather this afternoon and
evening in some of the areas that have had an overdose of that. The
risk area extends from West Texas through Illinois and Indiana. This
includes a Moderate Risk in places like Wichita, Topeka and Kansas City.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly continues to get
smarter and smarter, while my IQ slowly ebbs. She is becoming more
assertive. In the past, when she wanted to go to the bathroom, shoe
would knock the living daylights out of the little bell hanging by the
doorknob. Now she hits the bell one time, then comes to find me and
squats right in front of me with a steady stare. She does not move an
inch. She lets out a muffled bark about once every 60 seconds. She
gets results. Life goes on.

...Wet at Times Through Sunday...

A SOGGY AIRMASS: Moist air will hang over Alabama through the weekend,
with the chance of showers and storms continuing on a daily basis. The
showers today should be scattered, and most likely during the
afternoon and evening hours. If you like the numbers game, the chance
of any one spot getting wet is about one in four, and most of the
showers will come from about 2:00 until 9:00 p.m. Temperatures will
remain warm with a high in the mid 80s.

TOMORROW AND SUNDAY: Look for showers and storms to show an increase
in coverage over the weekend as a surface front approaches Alabama
from the north. At this point the chance of a big severe weather
problem looks unlikely with limited instability and dynamics. But,
some pretty decent rain amounts are likely; most places should see
between one and two inches of rain between today and Sunday night. It
won't rain all weekend long, but the showers and storms could some at
any time. The high tomorrow will be close to 80, but Sunday should be
considerably cooler with clouds and rain; some places might have a
hard time getting out of the 60s.

DRIER AIR ARRIVES EARLY NEXT WEEK: A continental airmass moves into
Alabama Sunday night, and that should push temperatures down into the
upper 40s by daybreak Monday. Our weather looks dry and pleasant
Monday and Tuesday with lower humidity levels, something we won't talk
about very much from June through August. A deep easterly flow is
forecast to develop over Alabama Wednesday, and Atlantic moisture is
expected to invade the state Wednesday night, and showers will be
possible again by Thursday.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine daily along the
Gulf Coast between Panama City and Gulf Shores today, tomorrow and
Sunday, with the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms each
day. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last
night was 81 degrees. We note some of the global computer models show
a broad area of low pressure in the Gulf next week; with water
temperatures now in excess of 80 degrees (F) will have to keep an eye
on developments down there.

ON THIS DATE IN 1896: Sherman, Texas tornado killed 73, 60 of them in
the town. The tornado probably rated as an EF5 from the intensity of
the damage, Bodies of tornado victims were found as far as 400 yards
away from their original location. A trunk lid was carried 35 miles by
the twister.

...More Showers and Storms...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a continuing saga of showers and
thunderstorms almost every day with only a few breaks on some days.
Fortunately, we were getting a break in the weather today because this
afternoon there were only a few scattered showers and thunderstorms in
progress and most of those were over the SW part of the state.

The vicious line of thunderstorms, that frightened millions of people
yesterday and last night in the Plains and Midwest, died a slow death
by the time they reached NW Alabama this morning.
There is only a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm this
evening, but there will be some increase in storms by Friday afternoon
as temperatures reach the mid 80s.

THE MAIN EVENT: Saturday and Sunday does not look good for pleasant
weather. Those two days will feature our main round of showers and
thunderstorms. They may become numerous by Saturday afternoon and
continue that way at night. One bit of encouragement: another cool
front is expected to push down into North Alabama at some point
Sunday. That may tend to lessen the number of storms by Sunday
afternoon. Even so, rain will probably be locally heavy Saturday night
and much of Sunday and a few thunderstorms could be strong to severe.
There is a good chance that much of Central Alabama will get about 2
inches of rain from the entire show.

THREE CHEERS FOR EARLY WEEK: How about clearing weather on Monday
with a substantial drop in humidity and cooler temperatures? Tuesday
should also be dry and very pleasant. By Monday morning, low
temperatures will be in the pleasant upper 40s and there could be some
mid 40s in the NE Alabama valleys. High temperatures both Monday and
Tuesday will be in the low to mid 70s. The long-range outlook is for
some more showers to return to the area by midweek, especially by
Thursday.

SEVERE WEATHER: A tragic night in the Midwest when three persons were
killed by a tornado at Kirksville in NE Missouri. Numerous reports of
severe weather yesterday from Oklahoma to Illinois and Indiana. There
were 23 reports of tornadoes and 127 reports of hail. Those numbers
will be reduced somewhat after verification showing that more than one
report was received on the same tornado. Unfortunately, the Storm
Prediction Center outlines another risk tomorrow for virtually the
same area—all the way from Oklahoma to Illinois and Indiana.

SPOTLIGHT: THE SHETLAND ISLANDS You have to look closely to find them
on a map. They are nestled between the North Atlantic and the North
Sea north of Scotland and west of Iceland. They have a delightful
climate if you are very warm natured like me. It is a place where
otters and seals play in quiet coves. The air is full of sounds of
wild birds among the jagged cliffs. No such thing as tornadoes or heat
waves.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A gentleman asked me yesterday, whatever
happened to Jo-Jo who was the first love of Miss Molly. On our
daily walk, Molly still peeps through the hedgerow looking for Jo-Jo.
He lives right behind us, but he has become an inside dog and we
rarely see him. Molly is now in love with two other dogs—both of them
much smaller than she is. Her first love is Dino the young Yorkie and
her newest love is a small puppy across the traffic circle from us. We
walked the south track this morning and Molly and her new neighbor
rubbed noses through a crack in the fence 4 or 5 times. Life goes on.
Dogs are interesting.

...Occasional Showers and Storms...

KEEP THE RAIN GEAR HANDY: A blanket of moist air will cover the Deep
South through the weekend, which means some risk of showers and
thunderstorms on a daily basis through Sunday. As is often the case
during the warm season, trying to tell you exactly when the rain will
start and stop in your neighborhood more than a few hours in advance
is almost impossible due to the scattered nature of the storms, but
the bulk of the rain should come during the afternoon and evening
hours. But, with such a moist airmass in place, we sure can't rule out
the risk of some nighttime or morning showers. The good news is that
the primary jet stream remains north of Alabama, and we don't expect
any major severe weather problems, although a few strong storms are
certainly possible along the way. Afternoon highs will rise into the
low to mid 80s today and tomorrow.

THE WEEKEND: Scattered to numerous showers and storms are likely on
Saturday, and that rain should be even more widespread on Sunday
thanks to the approach of a surface front that will have some decent
upper air support. Look for a gradual cooling trend this weekend
thanks to the clouds and occasional rain.

It still looks like a nice surge of drier air will move into Alabama
early next week, with a clearing sky Monday, and a good supply of
sunshine Tuesday and Wednesday. Humidity levels will be lower, and
nights will be cooler as continental air takes over. Then, moisture
will return later next week by Thursday and Friday.

QUITE A CONTRAST: A very interesting weather set-up across Alabama
yesterday; the eastern counties were impacted by a wedge of cooler
air, while West Alabama saw temperatures soaring as the sun broke
through the clouds. At 2:00, the temperature at Cheaha State Park
(Alabama's highest mountain, south of Anniston) was sitting at only 56
degrees, while Demopolis, in West Alabama had sunshine and a
temperature of 83. Just another reason why Alabama is not really a
"one number" kind of place when forecasting temperatures.

KILLER TORNADO: At least one person was killed last night near
Kirksville, Missouri due to a tornado that was responsible for major
damage to 30 to 40 homes. A gas leak was also reported, and U.S. 63
was closed for a while near the tornado track.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the

...Soggy Weather...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story about showers and thunderstorms that
will not completely let us alone on hardly any given day. We have to
look way down the road to Tuesday and Wednesday to find some mostly
sunny weather, less humid and cooler nights. In fact, early next week
we will have some low temperatures in the low 50s and highs in the low
to mid 70s.

Back to the present, we expect our best chance of showers and
thunderstorms to be Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is especially
true on Sunday when storms will become numerous at times and a few of
those may become strong to severe. Over the next four days, we should
get over 2 inches of rain across Central Alabama—most of that coming
on Sunday.

A big cluster of showers and storms moved into West Alabama last
night. Showers were still in progress this morning. Some of those
became quite heavy over North/Central and NE Alabama. As much as 4
inches of rain was recorded in SW Morgan County. A Flash Flood Warning
was in effect for that area until about midday. This afternoon most of
the showers had shifted over to East Alabama. There were also some
storms around the Mobile area.

In North Bibb County, the town of West Blocton has received rain for
13 days in a row for a total of 3.14 inches as of this morning. A few
other rain amounts this morning in Alabama included 0.71 at Marion,
0.67 in SW Lamar County, 0.75 in Argo and 0.64 in Scrougout.
Quite a temperature contrast around the state this afternoon as cooler
air was wedging in from Georgia and warm air from the west. It was
only 61 degrees in Anniston this afternoon, but in the lower 80s over
parts of West Alabama.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALASKA In my wildest imagination, I cannot picture how
much we paid for Alaska when we bought it from Russia many, many years
ago. It averaged out to only 2 cents per acre. Alaska is by far our
biggest state and, if you could drive from the western tip of the
Aleutians to SE Alaska, it would be equal to driving from near San
Francisco to NE Florida. 29,000 square miles of Alaska is in glaciers.
Coldest in that state this morning was 6 at Barrow. Anchorage had a
mild 68 yesterday. Still 36 inches of snow on the ground at Whittier.
There is no sunrise or sunset in Barrow on the north coast now as they
have 24 hours of daylight.

MISCELLANEOUS: 109 in Death Valley was the hottest yesterday. Coldest
in the lower 48 this morning was 14 in Yellowstone National Park. It
is getting that time of year when our troops in Iraq will have
blistering heat. The forecast for Basrah is for high temperatures 100
to 105 through this weekend.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I think Little Miss Molly is a very
smart little dog, but sometimes I wonder. Every time we go by the
house where Dino lives, his little nose is pressed against the lower
windowpane in the door and he gets all excited to see Molly. I will
tell Molly that Dino is her friend and she goes on full alert, but she
switches her head left and right to houses on either side of Dino and
never sees him. They both then cry. Life goes on.

...Moist Air Heading Northward...

RISING HUMIDITY: After a one day break from showers and tropical air,
moisture levels will increase statewide today, and we will bring back
the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. The best chance of
getting wet today will come during the afternoon and evening hours,
and the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in three. The
high will be in the low 80s.

The weather won't change much tomorrow and Friday; warm and humid
conditions are likely some a few intervals of sunshine, and the chance
of a few showers and thunderstorms both days. While most of the
showers will come during the afternoon, we can't rule out some risk of
late night or morning showers.

OUR WEEKEND: Scattered showers and storms are likely on Saturday with
a high in the low 80s; those storms should become more numerous on
Sunday thanks to an approaching surface front that will have some
pretty decent upper air support. The rain on Sunday could be heavy at
times, and a few strong to severe storms will be possible. Take the
rain gear if you are headed out to the Regions Golf Classic at Ross
Bridge this weekend. Hopefully no wash-out, but the weekend will be
wet at times.
Drier air should follow the weekend rain, and at this point the
weather across much of Alabama looks dry on Monday and Tuesday of next
week with lower humidity values and cooler nights.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine on a daily basis
through the weekend with the daily opportunity of scattered showers
and thunderstorms. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the 77
to 80 degree range, with low to mid 80s inland. The sea water
temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was at 80
degrees. We should note the 2009 hurricane season for the Atlantic
basin begins June 1; the first named storms this year will be Ana,
Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika, and Fred.

ON THIS DATE IN 1981: Massive tornado destroys 90 percent of Emberson
TX. Victims reported seeing a massive wall of debris instead of a
funnel. A man in a bathtub was blown 1/4 of a mile and a 1500 pound
recreational vehicle was blown 500 yards. 30 people were injured, but
miraculously no one was killed.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the

...Back to the Humidity...

TYPICAL MAY WEATHER: We got a nice break overnight and much of today
from the very humid and warm weather across Alabama. The models were
exactly right. The front tippy-toed its way all the way down to the
Gulf Coast. South Alabama did not see the dew points drop a great
deal, but they dropped into the 50s over the north half of the state.
Translation: less humidity and we also had a nice semi-cool breeze. It
will not be long to where dew points in the 50s will be almost unheard
of as we go into the long, hot, sultry summer. Let us all pull thumbs,
as Gabby Bell used to say, that we will not have a major heat wave
this summer. Most of you are too young to remember Gabby. He is the
father-in-law of Brenda Ladun and he was the play-by-play announcer
for the Barons.

WHAT IS AHEAD: That front that stalled on the beach was moving back
north as a warm front this afternoon and it had moved through most of
Alabama. This will leave us in a warm humid blanket of air the rest of
the week, so guess what? That means a risk of scattered showers and
thunderstorms almost every day. The next relief in sight will come
early next week when our highs back off into the 70s and our lows into
the 50s.

SPOTLIGHT: THUNDERSHOWERS I have not heard the word thundershowers in
a weather forecast in many years. In earlier days, even in the 1950s,
it was the standard wording when showers had thunder and lightning
involved. Some folks said back then that the word thunderstorm sounded
more ominous and should be saved for storms with lots of lightning and
thunder. We will try to have a spotlight item each day, but it will be
brief.

ROAMING: For the last 2 or 3 days, I have noticed a temperature at
Vostok, Antarctica around 95 below zero and it was expected to drop to
103 below—but it was snowing. It is hard to imagine enough moisture
still being in the air for even flakes the size of gnats. The coldest
temperature in the entire 50 states this morning was 24 at Scammon
Bay, Alaska. Hottest yesterday 108 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Quite often I get e-mails from our
readers explaining that they sadly had to put down one of their pets
and how devastating it is. This note yesterday from a lady named Judy
who had to put down her 15-year-old mixed breed Friday due to seizures
which had only been going on for a couple of weeks. Then her Weimer,
who was over 17 years old, got sick and died in her sleep. When her
husband was sick, before he passed away, he said the two oldest dogs
kept him going. Judy is having both dogs cremated together because
they lived and played together. I want to run stories of this type
occasionally to make all of us (and definitely including me) to be so
thankful for our pets. They are the spice of life. I truly believe
that a family with pets live longer. Little Miss Molly is over 6 years
old and, if anything, her energy package has ramped up even more. She
has learned to manipulate me to where I feel almost like a prisoner.
She will come over to my favorite chair where I am reading, poke me on
the knee with her paws and then jerk her head backwards toward the
back door meaning lets go. Life goes on.

...Dry Air For One Day...

A BREAK FROM THE RAIN: Drier air has filtered into the northern half
of the state today, and accordingly we have not mentioned any
significant chance of rain today; we believe any showers and storms
should be limited to South Alabama. With dewpoints in the 50s, the
humidity values will be lower, and the sky should become partly sunny
after some morning clouds. But, moist air is not too far away, and it
will return to North Alabama late tonight and tomorrow. A few
scattered showers and storms are possible as early as tomorrow
afternoon.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: Moist air will be the story for the latter half
of the week. The sky will be occasionally cloudy, and we will maintain
a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday with a
high in the low 80s. The rain won't be continuous, of course, and the
sun should peek out at times. The best chance of showers and storms
will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but we can't rule
out a few nighttime and morning showers along the way. The weather
will remain like this as we begin the weekend on Saturday. But, on
Sunday, showers and storms should increase in both coverage and
intensity as a cold front approaches the state, helped along by a
developing upper trough over the eastern U.S.

Looks like another surge of drier air will work into Alabama early
next week; at this point the weather looks dry Monday and Tuesday with
lower humidity values and cooler nights.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Triple digit heat continues over the Desert
Southwest; hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 108 degrees. The high in Phoenix, AZ was 103. Coldest place in
the nation was Barter Island, Alaska with 13 degrees. Just behind was
Spincich Lake, Michigan with 14. Some of the heaviest rain in the
nation was around the Ark-La-Tex region, where Shreveport was soaked
with 2.76". Quite a contrast across Alabama yesterday due to a stalled
front over the central counties of the state; the high in Dothan was a
summer-like 90, while Huntsville's high was only 65 degrees.
Birmingham's official high was 72, eight degrees below the average
high of 80.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: A very impressive sight as a tornado developed
over the southwest side of Miami, FL and chewed its way straight
across parts of downtown. Four people received minor injuries.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that
allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm sounds. Every
Alabama home and business needs one!

...Unsettled Weather...

ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN CONTINUES: Not a dull moment in Alabama
weather for a long time and the active weather pattern will continue
for at least through the weekend and into early next week. This does
not mean that we will have big booming thunderstorms every day nor an
all-day rain any day. However, it does mean that we cannot leave out
the mention of some showers or thunderstorms every day.

Today there was a stalled front all the way from West Texas eastward
across North Louisiana, the central parts of Mississippi, Alabama and
Georgia and into South Carolina. That stalled front has been sort of a
conduit for showers and storms the last few days. Sunday afternoon
there was some scattered wind damage over SE Alabama and some
torrential rain across Central Alabama cutting visibility to just a
few feet. Another batch of storms moved down across SW and South
Alabama Sunday night.

Today a train of showers and storms moving east along that stalled
front moved across Louisiana and Central Mississippi. The showers
spread out across Central Alabama this afternoon and were not very
heavy.

OKAY ON RAIN AMOUNTS: Most places in Alabama are doing okay so far
this year on rain totals. In Decatur, measurable rain has occurred on
7 of the first 10 days of May for a total of 8.62 inches. Huntsville
has received 8.34 inches in the last 10 days. All communities are not
that lucky--in Tuscaloosa, only 1.75 inches and in Mobile 1.03.
That stalled front will gradually push more to the south and stall
again. By daybreak Tuesday, it will start north again and by Wednesday
morning will be diagonally across the state from SE to NW. This will
increase our chances of showers and thunderstorms. Check our day-by-
day forecast for all of the details.

RARE TORNADO IN VERMONT: Bonnie Jackson, one of our daily readers at
Saranac Lake, New York, passed along a news report of a rare tornado
at Washington, Vermont Saturday. An apartment building was unroofed.
It left a half-mile path of destruction snapping and uprooting trees.
The NWS rated it an EF2. Unusual thing about that—Vermont only gets an
average of 1 tornado every two years.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM ELSEWHERE: Massive flash flooding in West Virginia
over the weekend. Some reports say 1,600 homes destroyed or damaged. A
State of Emergency was declared in six counties. Cold spots in the USA
this morning: 20 in Yellowstone National Park and 13 at Barter Island,
Alaska. Our daily check on Whittier snow amount—it has melted down to
38 inches. Only 3.5% of the lower 48 states still have a snow cover.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Worked all day Sunday doing radio
updates watching the thunderstorms. Got a good nap after about 8:00 in
my favorite chair. Finally to bed at 4:00 a.m. Little Miss Molly had
moved over on my side of the bed and curled up with her tiny head on
my pillow just like a 9-pound human. When we pick her up and move her,
she will let out a long groan clearly in protest. In the semi-
darkness, she could see me walking toward the bed and started a
distinct moan when I was 5-feet away. I moved her over to the other
side of the bed and she got over her protest quickly. Life goes on.

...Temporary Drying...

We have had our share of wind events this year. Last night, a
thunderstorm complex over eastern Mississippi took on the all-too
familiar comma head shape. It moved through West Central Alabama
during the late evening hours.

MORE RAIN TODAY? A passing shortwave will give us a chance of rain
this morning, but some drier air should follow this impulse later
today. This will allow for some clearing late in the day and
overnight. To the south, our persistent boundary will be a focus for
potential strong storms over South Alabama. Look for a little
patchy dense fog tonight then a sunny start for your Tuesday.

MIDWEEK MOISTURE RETURN: The respite from the rain will be brief.
In fact, moisture will return as early as Tuesday afternoon. Showers
will be possible Tuesday night and likely on Wednesday in a stout
return flow. Could see strong storms on Wednesday. There will be a
chance of showers and each day Thursday, Friday and Saturday as a
frontal system settles into the area and washes out. Look for a
frontal system to come through with a good chance of showers and
storms on Sunday, finally sweeping things out and setting the stage
for a brief run of fine May weather.

ENSO UPDATE: The equatorial Pacific has been shifting from a La Nina
pattern to a neutral phase recently. And NOAA thinks that it will
remain that way through much of the rest of the year. I would think
that we would see a return to more of an El Nino pattern by late in
the year. The natural pattern means that we will likely experience a
fairly typical Atlantic hurricane season. If the El Nino develops
late in the season, say October and November, activity then will be
curtailed.

SHUTTLE LAUNCH FORECAST: Weather at the Kennedy Space Center looks
excellent for Monday's scheduled launch of STS-125, the Space Shuttle
Atlantis. Atlantis is going to service the Hubbble Space Telescope.
The launch is scheduled for 1:01 p.m. CDT. Hot and dry conditions
have been plaguing Florida, but the high is expected to move to the
south on Monday, allowing a seabreeze to redevelop. Cumulus clouds
along the seabreeze front are the only potential weather problem at
the launch site. The only other problem is that there could be a
shower at the Spain abort landing site. Conditions on Tuesday will
not be as favorable for launch as a front settles into the area, so
hopefully the mission will depart today as scheduled.

ON THIS DATE IN 1934: In the mid 1930s, much of the American economy
depended on agriculture. Thirty percent of United States residents
still lived on farms. The Great Depression was worsened by the Dust
Bowl era of the 1930s as stifling heat waves, desiccating droughts and
huge dust storms dried up the Plains states. In May 1934, a major dust
storm over the Plains picked up an estimated 350 million tons of
topsoil and dropped it on the eastern U.S. There was enough soil
dumped on Chicago that every man, woman and child could have received
four pounds of it. Cities like Boston had to turn on their street
lights in the middle of the day.

...More Storms; Heavy Rain...

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Today is the day that we pay special homage to
that wonderful woman that is mom. I hope that all of the mom's out
there have a wonderful day today.

LAST EVENING'S RAIN AND STORMS: A surface front sank south across
Alabama last night. As it did, it pushed an area of showers and
storms across the state. Rainfall amounts were generally between a
quarter and three quarters of an inch, but some spots picked up as
much as one to two inches. Bear Creek in Marion County measured 1.22
inches.

MORE RAIN AHEAD: The surface boundary lies across Central Alabama
today, from Livingston to Prattville to Lafayette. The front extends
back into Louisiana. A moist airmass covers the South. Precipitable
water amounts are around 1.50 inches. That is the amount of water in
the atmosphere that would fall in the atmosphere were completely
squeezed out. That's a lot of moisture, especially when it converges
and piles up into storms. With all that moisture lying around, the
slightest perturbation in the upper winds can spark thunderstorms that
grow into a complex.

That happened late last night over Oklahoma. Those storms are into
Alabama now. To the south of the boundary, instability levels are
higher and severe storms are possible. To the north, rain and
embedded storms will dump heavy rainfall. Flash flood watches are in
effect. Another one half to one inch of rain is expected through
tonight in most spots, with some locations over western Alabama
picking up more than an inch.

HEADING INTO MONDAY: The boundary should push south tonight. There
could be a few lingering showers across Central Alabama on Monday,
with more rain and storms over South Alabama again. Skies should
start to clear across the area by late Monday afternoon, with complete
clearing during the evening as drier air moves in. There could be a
little dense fog overnight into Tuesday morning.

TUESDAY AND BEYOND: Any fog should burn off quickly Tuesday morning
under a strong May sun. Skies will be mostly sunny Tuesday morning
and temperatures will rise quickly into the 70s. But the sunshine
will be short lived, as clouds will return during the day as southerly
winds bring moisture back into the area. Showers will return Tuesday
night. The Gulf will be open for business by Wednesday and rain and
storms will be likely. Some of them could be strong. An approaching
front will tap the moisture on Thursday, spelling more showers and
storms. This same pattern could last into the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: The Cerro Grande Fire near Los Alamos, New
Mexico had been burning for seven days. What had started as a
prescribed burn in the Bandelier National Monument became New Mexico's
worst recorded wildfire as winds suddenly began to gust to over 40
mph. Quickly burning out of control, the fire began to threaten the
city of Los Alamos and the Los Alamos National Labs. It would take
two months to control the fire that burned 48,000 acres and 400 homes.
