...Happy Mother's Day!...

Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful moms out there across the
world today on your special day. Thanks for all the things that you
have done and do to make your kids' lives as wonderful as possible.

RAIN SCARCE ON SATURDAY: Rainfall amounts were isolated and
relatively light on Saturday. Most of the action occurred in North
Central Georgia and over Southeast Alabama, south of Montgomery.

A BEAUTIFUL MOTHER'S DAY: A warm, dry Sunday is expected today across
Alabama. Drier air has been filtering into the state behind a weak
front, if you can call it that. It is really just a surface trough.
A few showers and storms formed along the leading edge of this trough
yesterday afternoon as it moved south into Alabama.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Drier air will limit the development of showers and
storms through Tuesday. There still will be a small chance of
afternoon and evening thunderstorms across the area Monday and
Tuesday, but the chance will be very small. By Wednesday, an
approaching upper trough and cold front will trigger fairly widespread
shower and thunderstorm development. The front will slowly settle
into South Central Alabama, maintaining shower chances for southern
sections. A fairly strong easterly wedge is hinted at for Friday into
the weekend with a moist easterly flow in place.

ON THIS DATE IN 1930: One of the only official US hail deaths
occurred on this date near Lubbock Texas. A farmer caught in open
field was killed. Hail is dangerous but deaths from hail are rather
infrequent. Other historical U.S. hail fatalities included one death
in the 1700's, two deaths in the 1800's, and three deaths in the
1900's. The most recent incident occurred on March 28, 2000 as two
tornadoes moved across downtown Fort Worth, Texas, one person was
killed by baseball sized hail which struck the victim in the head. He
later died in the hospital from his injuries. Large hailstones can
fall at the rate of 90 miles per hour. . Prior to the Fort Worth
fatality, the last recorded U.S. hail fatality was on July 30th, 1979
at Fort Collins, Colorado. An infant was killed in that incident,
which saw 3 ½ inch hailstones and was the worst hailstorm in the
history of Fort Collins.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: An F3 tornado ripped directly through the
center of Kalamazoo, Michigan, killing five and injuring seventy nine.
Twelve hundred people were left homeless. The tornado passed directly
over the American Bank, where a barograph reported a pressure drop of
0.59 inches. The pressure drop in a tornado is fortunately spread
over a few seconds, which gives most buildings and homes time to
equalize the air pressure through minute openings in the structures.
It is the tornado's winds that destroy homes. The effect of the
pressure drop is irrelevant.

Many locations around the Birmingham Metro picked up beneficial rains
last night. The amounts are certainly well short of what is needed to
end the drought we are experiencing, but we will take everything that
we can get. Some of the amounts from last evening courtesy J.B.
Elliott, the Skywatchers and our friends at the National Weather
Service…

…2.49 on Rex Lake Road between Leeds and Irondale
…2.44 in Cahaba Heights (lots of rain around the Birmingham Zoo area
and Mountain Brook also)
…1.75 in Bluff Park
…0.88 in NE Trussville, 0.63 just SE of downtown Trussville
…0.54 at Calera
…0.38 at Pinson
…0.33 at the Birmingham Airport

MAIN EVENTMORE SCATTERED STORMS TODAY: After some morning fog in some
areas, sunny skies prevailed across much of Central Alabama at late
morning. They were slowest to break up over eastern St. Clair and
western Calhoun Counties. With lots of sunshine, temperatures will
rise well into the 80s through early afternoon, which will lead to
plenty of buoyant energy this afternoon. This will be aided by an
approaching cool front, which is entering northern Tennessee this
afternoon. Some of the more energetic storms could produce small hail
and strong, gusty winds. All will have dangerous lightning and there
will be locally heavy rainfall amounts. They will last well into the
night with the additional spark provided by the weak front.

TOMORROW GOING FORWARD: Drier air will filter into Central Alabama
tomorrow behind the front. This will lead to a reduction in the
number of showers and storms through Tuesday. A stronger front will
arrive on Wednesday, brining a good chance of showers and storms and
dropping our readings back into the comfortable 70s for highs, 50s for
lows for the latter part of the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Wisconsin was struck by one of its most
destructive storms ever as a morning severe thunderstorm caused over
$100 million in damage. The high precipitation supercell formed in
western Wisconsin and tracked across much of the state for the next 2
½ hours. Interestingly, the storm was elevated convection, meaning
that the source of the instability was not surface based. Such storms
can produce very large hail. Baseball sized hail fell in Waushara
County. The roofs of over 1,000 homes were damaged in the town of
Omro. Microburst winds caused extensive damage across Calumet and
Manitowoc Counties. Huge hail was driven through the sides of houses
by 80 mph winds in Chilton. St. Nazianz was heavily damaged by
microburst winds of 100 mph and two inch hail. A total of thirty
people were injured in the storm.

================================================

AFTER SATURDAY, BACK TO DRY WEATHER: Even Saturday is not going to
give widespread coverage of showers and thunderstorms. Some are
already developing this afternoon, mainly over East Alabama. The
winds aloft are extremely light. For example, at the 10,000-foot
level over Birmingham, winds were less than 10 mph. This means that
any thunderstorms that form will be slow movers. Rain from those will
be concentrated in smaller areas, but if you are lucky enough to be
in one of those smaller areas, you could get a good soaking.

On Saturday, high temperatures will back off a bit due to more
clouds and some scattered showers and thunderstorms. Do not look for
a general drenching by any means. A lot of places will stay high and
dry. Meanwhile, we are watching a drier and slightly cooler air mass
that will be pushing down from the north and NE. The front should
enter North Alabama early Sunday and push southward. This will cut
off any showers over at least the north half of the state. Dry
weather is also expected on Monday and Tuesday as high temperatures
back off to the lower 80s. An outside chance of a shower Tuesday
night, but it looks like our next best chance of showers and
thunderstorms will be next Wednesday.

Slow-moving thunderstorms yesterday brought some good amounts of
rain to parts of North Alabama. A few of the heavier amounts included
1.69 inches at Madison, 0.75 at Russellville, 0.92 at Capshaw in
Limestone County and 0.89 in Huntsville (UAH).

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The wildfire situation is horrible,
especially in Florida where fires were out of control in about two-
thirds of their counties. A vicious fire also on Catalina Island off
shore from Los Angeles. Residents had to be evacuated by boat. Big
fires also in NE Minnesota. Flooding in Houston yesterday. Hobby
Airport 2.51 inches of rain. For the first time in a long time, no
part of the USA under a slight risk of severe weather today. There
could still be a few isolated severe. For Saturday, a slight risk for
Montana and Northern Idaho. Coldest in the lower 48 this morning was
27 at Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Policy change with Little Miss Molly.
Instead of two marathon ballgames a day, I am going to try about 10
very short games basically each time I pass through the living area
going for coffee. She will love that. I sure do enjoy getting e-mails
from our readers telling about their dogs. Kathy Gardner has 4 dogs.
One of them a 4-pound little girl, Tippy, who is 14 years old and
still kicking. One day Scuffles was missing. Each day for three days,
when going to the mailbox, Kathy would think she could hear him
crying. It broke her heart. Finally one day, she heard the noise so
loud she turned and looked toward a neighbors house and Scuffles was
looking out the window at her. He had accidentally been locked in her
house when they left for vacation. He was hungry, thirsty and lonely.
She was thankful that her neighbor had a garage door that would not
lock and she was able to get him out. Life goes on. Our little
creatures are ever so interesting....

SCATTERED STORMS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: They should be scarce on
Friday with only a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm in any
one spot. Probably our better chance to get some rain in Alabama will
be Saturday with scattered showers and thunderstorms. However, it
does not appear to be a widespread soaking and some folks will remain
high and dry.

By Sunday, a front pushing down from the north will move into
extreme North Alabama and then push down to near the Gulf Coast by
Monday. This is not good news. That means most of the showers and
storms will be cut off for the northern part of the state on Sunday
and for most of the state on Monday. The next decent chance of rain
will be about the middle of next week.

ANDREA: She will have virtually no effect on Alabama weather. There
is a chance that the immediate coastal strip of East Florida could
get some rain. It is critically needed in that state. Over 200
wildfires were in progress around Florida today. Andrea was
downgraded to a subtropical depression this morning with sustained
winds down to 35 mph. The center was 100 miles ESE of Jacksonville or
about 80 miles NE of Daytona and drifting south. The remnants should
stay off shore, at least through tonight.

THE SEVERE WEATHER SITUATION: Much of the storm-ravaged Central
Plains were getting a break today from any significant risk of any
severe thunderstorms or tornadoes. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was
posted for North Pennsylvania and through much of New York State.
Amazingly, this included Saranac Lake in Upstate New York where it
was a very cold 20 degrees just a few mornings ago.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Oklahoma City has received 18.35 inches of
rain so far in 2007. That is more than double the Birmingham total.
The normal rainfall for Oklahoma City is considerably less than
Birmingham. Flood issues remain very serious in places like Oklahoma,
Missouri and Iowa from recent heavy rains. The governor of Oklahoma
declared an emergency for all 77 counties. In the last 24 hours,
2.69 inches of rain at Wichita Falls, Texas. This is the season for a
lot of tornadoes in places like Oklahoma and Kansas. On this date in
1905, a violent tornado at Snyder, Oklahoma was so powerful that the
roar could be heard 12 miles away as it cut a 40-mile long path.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I love a saying by Mark Twain and
often repeated by President Truman. It goes, "Always do right. It
will please some people and astonish the rest." So, I promise to do
right by Little Miss Molly. I am keeping my promise to never spank
her again. Today I want to mention a special heartbreaking item from
Charlotte Barton. She is a faithful reader from the Tuscaloosa area.
I met her a couple of years ago at the small Havana Methodist Church
in Hale County where I used to attend as a kid. About a week ago,
Charlotte lost her precious dog Little Benji. He had a kidney disease
that they knew about for 3 years and just had to watch him decline in
health. Charlotte said she had Benji for 10 years and 4 months. Even
though he has been gone nearly a week, she still misses him dearly.
Our condolences. I simply do not know how I would handle that with
little Miss Molly. Life goes on and sometimes we have to face the
sorrow mixed with the good.....

CRUCIAL NEED OF RAIN: We cannot overemphasize how badly we need
rain. Alabama has been fortunate so far in that we have not had a
great outbreak of wildfires like in Georgia and Florida. It is so dry
now that Mother Earth could swallow ½ inch of rain with it hardly
being noticed. Jason Simpson, writing in the 33/40 Weather Blog,
reported that Anniston has had below normal rain on 14 of the last 17
months and Tuscaloosa has a 23-inch shortfall since January 2006. I
keep thinking back to 1952 and again two years later in 1954.
Starting in January 1954, we had 13 months in a row with below normal
precipitation. The statewide average in 1954 was 34.36 inches—the
driest on record. It is a summer when visibility was restricted by
forest fires and, at times, the smoke was visible in most sections of
the state. Some wells went dry that had never been dry before. Back
to the present, a fire accidentally set in the woodlands could be out
of control in no time flat.

WHEN WILL WE GET RAIN? We have some in the forecast with a slight
chance late Friday and probably a better chance on Saturday. Through
all of this, some parts of Central Alabama could get 2/3 to ¾ of an
inch. However, we have seen cases like this lately where the rain
seemed to evaporate, but we think this is a decent chance.

ANDREA IS BORN: Too early for a tropical storm and Andrea is really
not a purebred tropical system, but the storm in the Atlantic was
given that name this morning and called sub-tropical Andrea. This
afternoon she was centered 100 miles SE of Savannah or 135 miles NNE
of Daytona. Movement was erratic, but generally west at 3 mph.
Sustained winds were about 45 mph. Andrea is not expected to produce
any significant rain on land through at least tomorrow morning,
because the center will remain off shore.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Not too many weeks ago, there was a good snow
pack across the Northern USA. This morning the snow survey showed
that only 3% of the lower 48 had a snow cover. Last month at this
time it was 27%. Three inches of new snow at Cripple Creek, Colorado.
There are still some big amounts on the ground in the high country of
the west, mostly in remote areas where automated equipment keeps
track. There was over 230 inches on the ground this morning at
Franklin Basin, Idaho and Black Bear, Montana. Finally, the Plains
states are under a lesser threat of severe weather. There was a
slight risk today over SW Texas. Serious flood problems along the
Missouri River and other parts of the Plains and Midwest. More than
1.50 inches of rain in the last 24 hours at Dallas and Lubbock in
Texas and at Oklahoma City. Lowest temperature in the lower 48 today
was 26 in Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was a two-cat day for Little Miss
Molly. First time in her life that she had to chase two cats on one
walk. The first one was crouched down near a drain—a new cat we had
never seen. He glued himself as close to the ground as he could to
not be seen, because there was no escape except coming past Molly.
She saw him and charged the poor little fella. He shot out of there
like a rocket and actually brushed Molly as he zoomed by. That was
the most excitement she had had in a long time. The regular CC
(Community Cat) was at the upper end of the track hiding in the Old
Crow Creek. She saw Molly in time to race away into a culvert with
Molly and I doing 40 mph to catch up. Life goes on.....

RAY OF HOPE IN A SEA OF DOOM: The Kansas National Guard raised the
good old USA flag on what was left of the Greensburg Post Office
early this afternoon. Three cheers!

THE ALABAMA STORY: Back home in Alabama, it is a continuing story
of the entire countryside crying and begging for rain. Look at these
rain deficits in only 17 weeks (since January 1):

13.05 inches in Huntsville
12.20 in Birmingham
9.60 in Montgomery
11.40 in Mobile

In Birmingham, for example, the actual deficit equals about two and
one-half months of normal rainfall. It is difficult to catch up when
you get that far behind. A big plus would be a tropical depression,
but we certainly do not want a tropical storm. We do have a chance of
showers starting at some point Friday and a better chance by this
weekend. We are not sure how much rain will fall across Central
Alabama, but there is a good chance that before it is over some areas
will get 2/3 inch or more.

Meanwhile, it will start getting more humid and the
thermometer will return to above normal levels during the afternoon.
Look for mid 80s starting tomorrow all the way through the weekend.
There was a nice feel in the air this morning. It will not be long
until we will have no chance of that again until autumn. Some of the
cooler temperatures this morning included 40 at Horseshoe Bend, 41 in
DeSoto State Park, 42 in Troy, 43 in Heflin. It was in the 40s over
most of the north half of Alabama.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: A strong low pressure area east of
Jacksonville grew stronger during the night as it crossed the Gulf
Stream. It is a hybrid between a cold-core nor'easter and a warm core
tropical type. However, it still does not have enough bloodline to
even be a semi-tropical situation. Beach erosion and coastal flooding
is occurring all the way from North Carolina to South Florida. This
low is expected to weaken as it moves into North Florida in a couple
of days. Still a chance it will give the fire-plagued area of South
Georgia welcome rain. A cold temperature this morning was 23 at
Stanley, Idaho. The South Plains are still being pounded. A Tornado
Watch was in effect for West Texas and at least 8 counties under
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. Major river flooding in the Midwest,
especially from Missouri through Iowa and South Dakota. Too bad the
rain cannot be spread around.....

NO TIME FOR OUTDOOR BURNING: Much drier air spread across Alabama
from the east today. With low dew points and brisk east winds, it is
not time for outdoor burning. In fact, a red flag warning covers much
of the region. The shortfall in rain for Birmingham for 2007 has
reached more than one foot again. That is a very serious matter,
since we are only a little over four months into the new year.

ANY RELIEF IN SIGHT? Virtually no chance until late in the week.
Even then only a slight chance on Friday, a slightly better chance
Friday night and Saturday. Do not look for a widespread drenching.
Our cooler temperatures can be credited to a relatively strong high
pressure area centered over the NE today. Cooler dry air pushed down
the Atlantic Seaboard and westward into Alabama. While we are calling
for a low of 47 across Central Alabama tonight, the outlying valley
locations will be the most likely areas to get that cool. Afternoon
temperatures will be moderating after Tuesday reaching the mid 80s by
Wednesday and Thursday. Too bad rain systems do not even out. It was
four years ago today when massive flash flooding occurred in several
sections of the state. 9.82 inches of rain fell in only 4 hours in NE
Trussville and 10.50 off Edwards Lake Road in Huffman.

TORNADO SCORECARD: We all know about the tragic event in
Greensburg, Kansas where virtually the entire town was destroyed or
severely damaged. There were 10 fatalities. This brought the tornado
death toll in the USA to 69 so far this year. There have been 18
tornadoes that have killed one or more persons. 68 of the 69
fatalities occurred where a Tornado Watch was in effect. 27 of the
deaths were caused by an EF3, 17 an EF4 and 10 by the EF5.

ATLANTIC COASTAL STORM: It is not tropical in nature, but a strong
low pressure area was east of the South Carolina coast. The broad
circulation around that storm was causing big waves along the Mid-
Atlantic Coast. A High Surf Advisory covers most of the area and
there was some overwash along the North Carolina Outer Banks. Myrtle
Beach was reporting north winds to 35 mph this afternoon. A weather
buoy in the Atlantic NW of the low pressure area was reporting north
winds gusting to 50 mph and 24-foot waves. The unusual low is
expected to work its way southward and finally into North Florida in
a few days. The big plus to all of this is that it may bring some
welcome rain to the SE Georgia wildfire country, where over 100,000
acres have been burned.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Cold spots this morning 20 at Saranac Lake,
New York and 10 at Anaktuvuk, Alaska. It is good to hear that most of
the people in the Kansas tornadoes are not angry. Instead, they are
thankful to be alive. In years of doing storm surveys here in
Alabama, I talked to dozens of survivors who had lost everything. I
do not ever remember an angry person. They were humble and thankful
for their lives.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The beautiful new little Yorkie puppy
that lives four houses away came by the house yesterday where Molly
lives. He paused long enough to use the mailbox post as a fireplug.
That was a no-no for Molly, because she uses it too. My tiny corner
got a nice brief shower Sunday morning, but the ground opened its
mouth and swallowed it immediately. However, a brisk east wind today
and much lower dew points made our walks much more pleasant. I want
to write a story about a very pleasant dog later this week. Life goes
on.....

....Cooler Conditions Ahead...

Hot and humid out there across Central Alabama on this Sunday
afternoon. Temperatures at midafternoon are in the 80s to around 90
degrees. Dew points are in the middle 60s. A few light showers were
along the Mississippi border over Lamar County. Stronger and more
widespread showers and storms were over South Alabama ahead of a slow
moving back door cold front that has come in from the north and east.
This front will allow for drier air to begin filtering into Alabama
overnight tonight. This will allow temperatures to cool into the
comfortable 50s overnight. Tomorrow will feature a brisk easterly
wind and temperatures that will hold short of 80 degrees in most
locations. Skies should be mostly sunny, although there could be a
few cloudier periods with the easterly wedge in place. Tuesday morning
will be the coolest of the next batch, with an overnight low in the
40s in most locations. Sunny skies will continue to hold sway
through at least Wednesday, with temperatures gradually moderating
back into the 80s.

GREENSBURG TORNADO AN EF5? It has been nearly eight years since we
have had an F5 tornado in the U.S. It was on May 3, 1999, when a
devastating tornado hit Oklahoma City. It is the longest time we have
ever gone between F5 tornadoes. Well, that may have come to an end
with the horrible tornado at Greensburg, KS Friday night. There is
quite a bit of chatter in the chaser forums today that says the Quick
Response Team believes that it was an EF5. Given, we have not seen
anything official, but some credible information that it will likely
be rated as an EF5.

PLAINS BESIEGED BY SEVERE WEATHER AGAIN: 93 reports of tornadoes
yesterday from western Oklahoma through Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota
into Iowa and even Northeast Colorado. Add this to 33 reports from
Friday and throw into today, and you have a significant weekend of
severe weather. A Moderate Risk Outlook for severe weather is in
effect this afternoon and evening across SE Kansas, Oklahoma and back
into the extreme eastern Panhandle of Texas. Severe weather will still
be possible over a wide area tomorrow and even Tuesday, even though by
then it will begin to be concentrated over the southern Plains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1840: A mile wide tornado destroys the Mississippi
River town of Natchez, Mississippi about noon. 317 are left dead in
Natchez alone, 48 on land and 269 in boats on the river. This was the
worst tornado in United States history to occur before the
establishment of the Weather Bureau. Horses reportedly were burst
open by the storm.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Dust devils are whirlwinds not associated
with thunderstorms. They form on sunny and hot days with light winds.
They usually swirl harmlessly across fields, kicking up a little
dust. Some however have been exceptionally large and long-lived. On
this date, an unusually powerful dust devil cut a 300 yard long path
near Minong WI. Damage was reported to a house and a fence.
