NO TIME FOR OUTDOOR BURNING: Much drier air spread across Alabama
from the east today. With low dew points and brisk east winds, it is
not time for outdoor burning. In fact, a red flag warning covers much
of the region. The shortfall in rain for Birmingham for 2007 has
reached more than one foot again. That is a very serious matter,
since we are only a little over four months into the new year.

ANY RELIEF IN SIGHT? Virtually no chance until late in the week.
Even then only a slight chance on Friday, a slightly better chance
Friday night and Saturday. Do not look for a widespread drenching.
Our cooler temperatures can be credited to a relatively strong high
pressure area centered over the NE today. Cooler dry air pushed down
the Atlantic Seaboard and westward into Alabama. While we are calling
for a low of 47 across Central Alabama tonight, the outlying valley
locations will be the most likely areas to get that cool. Afternoon
temperatures will be moderating after Tuesday reaching the mid 80s by
Wednesday and Thursday. Too bad rain systems do not even out. It was
four years ago today when massive flash flooding occurred in several
sections of the state. 9.82 inches of rain fell in only 4 hours in NE
Trussville and 10.50 off Edwards Lake Road in Huffman.

TORNADO SCORECARD: We all know about the tragic event in
Greensburg, Kansas where virtually the entire town was destroyed or
severely damaged. There were 10 fatalities. This brought the tornado
death toll in the USA to 69 so far this year. There have been 18
tornadoes that have killed one or more persons. 68 of the 69
fatalities occurred where a Tornado Watch was in effect. 27 of the
deaths were caused by an EF3, 17 an EF4 and 10 by the EF5.

ATLANTIC COASTAL STORM: It is not tropical in nature, but a strong
low pressure area was east of the South Carolina coast. The broad
circulation around that storm was causing big waves along the Mid-
Atlantic Coast. A High Surf Advisory covers most of the area and
there was some overwash along the North Carolina Outer Banks. Myrtle
Beach was reporting north winds to 35 mph this afternoon. A weather
buoy in the Atlantic NW of the low pressure area was reporting north
winds gusting to 50 mph and 24-foot waves. The unusual low is
expected to work its way southward and finally into North Florida in
a few days. The big plus to all of this is that it may bring some
welcome rain to the SE Georgia wildfire country, where over 100,000
acres have been burned.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Cold spots this morning 20 at Saranac Lake,
New York and 10 at Anaktuvuk, Alaska. It is good to hear that most of
the people in the Kansas tornadoes are not angry. Instead, they are
thankful to be alive. In years of doing storm surveys here in
Alabama, I talked to dozens of survivors who had lost everything. I
do not ever remember an angry person. They were humble and thankful
for their lives.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The beautiful new little Yorkie puppy
that lives four houses away came by the house yesterday where Molly
lives. He paused long enough to use the mailbox post as a fireplug.
That was a no-no for Molly, because she uses it too. My tiny corner
got a nice brief shower Sunday morning, but the ground opened its
mouth and swallowed it immediately. However, a brisk east wind today
and much lower dew points made our walks much more pleasant. I want
to write a story about a very pleasant dog later this week. Life goes
on.....
