==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: The heat has relented just a bit this afternoon across North and Central Alabama. Temperatures at mid-afternoon were running some 5-8 degrees below those at the same time yesterday. Most locations over Central Alabama will top out near 90 degrees today. .

SCATTERED STORMS: Scattered showers and storms formed over the northwestern quarter of the state by early afternoon. The storms were not as widespread or as strong as on Friday, but they will pack a punch in areas lucky enough to get under one again. Of course, people with downed trees or power outages may not feel very lucky, but the rainfall is beneficial.

DID YOU SEE: Several reports of hail and wind damage across Alabama on Friday? Hail to the size of golfballs was reported in Meridianville in North Alabama. Numerous trees were reported down in Blount County. Some significant damage down in Randolph County in downtown Roanoke. Locally, viewers sent in pictures of trees blown down in places like Tarrant.

RELENTLESS HEAT: Finally relenting a bit. There are signs that we may only see highs in the middle to upper 80s tomorrow. With the proximity of the boundary and trough, we could even see showers overnight tonight, and we probably will wake up cloudy. Some sunshine will break out during the day and more showers and storms will develop. Those rain chances will spill over into Sunday night.

TROPIC CHECK: The upper low east of the Florida coast has picked up a little convection today. The morning recon mission was cancelled. Two flights are scheduled for tomorrow. The system still has the potential to develop into a tropical or subtropical depression before it makes landfall late tomorrow and turns north toward the Carolinas. It will bring beneficial rains to those areas and could indirectly enhance our rain chances tomorrow night and maybe Monday.

WEEK AHEAD: As the low moves up the coast, slightly drier air will filter into behind it, reducing our rain chances for Tuesday and Wednesday. A typical summertime patter of daily scattered storms returns for midweek.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: One of J.B,’s weather fascinations, as well as mine, is that of the heatburst. An unusually damaging wind event and heatburst occurred during the late night hours on the 23rd and the early morning hours of the 25th in southwest Iowa. Winds were sustained at 30-50 mph for over an hour at several locations, including Creston, Shenandoah, Clarinda and Red Oak. The wind gusted to 80mph at Shenandoah at 11:23 PM.

Two factors are surmised to have caused the event. First, light showers had moved through the area left lots of hot, dry air aloft between 4000-10,000 feet. When rain falls through the dry air, it cools evaporatively, which makes it heavier and results in strong downdrafts and high winds. Secondly, winds between 600-5000 feet were quite strong and the momentum of these winds dropped to the surface causing higher winds. The wind event was accompanies by dramatic rises in temperature.

GOOD MORNING: I hope your backyard received beneficial rains on Friday
afternoon. Some rainfall amounts across the state included:

2.71 at Birmingham Airport
1.38 at Evergreen
1.19 at De Soto State Park
1.10 at Crossville
0.29 at Fort Payne
0.18 at Anniston
0.10 at Cullman
Trace at Shelby County Airport
From ABC3340 Weather Watchers::
Justin Maxwell in Leeds reports 0.83
Roger Heath in Crumly Chapel reports 0.16

TEMPS BACK OFF: Our run of extremely hot temperatures may be ready for a
little break. Most locations will top out near 90 degrees today across
North Central Alabama. Temperatures will be closer to normal over the
coming week with highs near 90 and lows near 70.

RAIN CHANCES: It appears that we will be sandwiched between the developing
low to the southeast and a trough of low pressure to our northwest. This
will give us decent shower and storm chances through Monday when the low
turns northward and passes to the east of us. Drier air should filter in
behind the low and a typical summertime pattern will ensue.

TROPICS: An upper level low near the Bahamas still has the potential to
develop into a tropical depression as it moves toward Florida. The low
should move inland later today before it has time to become a tropical
storm. It will curve northward into Georgia and the Carolinas early next
week, accompanied by heavy rains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: On the basis of meteorological data and a radio
report from a shrimp boat, the Weather Bureau in New Orleans issued the
first advisory on a tropical depression in the Bay of Campeche at 10:30 PM.
The depression was located 300 miles south of Brownsville TX. The storm
would become Hurricane Audrey, moving northward over the next 3 days and
striking near the Louisiana/Texas border causing extreme loss of life.

==================================================================

CHEERS, THE HEAT WILL BACK OFF: No dramatic change to cooler
weather, mind you, but after today our high temperatures will back off
to more acceptable levels and we could even have some cooler nighttime
temperatures by early in the week.

Meanwhile, we have some pesky strong thunderstorms to deal with. A
number of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued this afternoon. In
Marion County, two trees fell through the roof of a home just west of
Hamilton. Lightning caused a house fire at Helena in Shelby County.

This afternoon a line of strong thunderstorms was moving east across
about the northern 1/3 of the state. There will be some scattered
thunderstorms lingering through the evening, but diminishing well
before midnight.

Look for some more scattered storms on Saturday. By Sunday, we believe
that the scattered storms will be mainly over East Alabama and
temperatures will back off to the upper 80s. By Tuesday, look for
mostly sunshine and lower humidity and some cooler early mornings. In
fact, Tuesday morning we may see temperatures as low as the upper 50s
in some of the North Alabama valleys.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Getting more interesting. The National Hurricane
Center says the broad low pressure area 200 miles east of the NW
Bahamas became better organized today and winds aloft are becoming
more friendly. A tropical depression could form during the next day or
two as it moves slowly WNW. They plan to send a hurricane hunter
aircraft into the system on Saturday if necessary. The future path is
not certain, but it may move inland into Florida and then move up
through SE Georgia and affect the NE. We get an estimate of 5-day
rainfall twice a day and the latest chart indicates as much as 9
inches could fall in Pennsylvania from this system. Scary thought.

DATELINE SEDONA: That major forest fire in Oak Creek Canyon south of
Flagstaff, Arizona is only 15% contained. The high temperature is
expected to be around 100 in Sedona over the weekend with 10%
humidity. There is a remote chance of a thunderstorm. Lightning is an
absolute no-no for fire fighters in a case like this. A large number
of major western fires are set off by lightning.

FRIDAY NOTES: 121 in death Valley yesterday...28 this morning in
Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly was totally pooped
when she got home from the beauty shop yesterday afternoon. Naturally
she cannot take her normal naps with so many other dogs around. First
time ever that she has turned down my offer of a ballgame. She chased
a ball one time, then came back, jumped on the couch, curled up on my
National Geographic blanket and slept much of the afternoon. She sure
does look funny with a short haircut, except she still has a bushy
head and a pom-pom tail. She and I plan to catch up this weekend…after
our walk yesterday afternoon, she made me deliver her treat while she
was prone on the hardwood floor looking for the coolest surface in the
house. Molly and I both prefer a walking temperature of 36 degrees
but we will not have that for months. Life goes on.

...Heat Levels Slowly Coming Down...

Over the next three days the afternoon heat will slowly back off across
Alabama as the core of the upper ridge over us breaks down, and a surface
front approaches from the north. We are forecasting mid 90s today, low 90s
tomorrow, and a high near 90 on Sunday. Some spots might even fail to reach
90 on Sunday. In addition, the coverage of afternoon showers and storms
should increase a bit; providing a few neighborhoods with some temporary
heat relief. The chance of any one spot getting a shower or storm today is
about one in four, with perhaps better odds tomorrow as the surface front
moves into North Alabama.

TWO IN A ROW: The Birmingham Airport reached 100 degrees yesterday, for the
second day in a row. The state hot spot was Dothan with a sizzling 102
degrees; Evergreen and Montgomery reached 101. The high was 99 at Anniston,
Auburn, Tuscaloosa, and Pinson.

TROPICS HEATING UP: A disturbance east of the Bahamas is becoming better
organized, and as winds aloft over the system become lighter there is come
chance a tropical depression could form over the weekend. This system will
move toward the west/northwest, in the general direction of the Atlantic
coast of the Carolinas.

Even if a tropical depression does not form, the moisture will set up a
heavy rain event for much of the eastern U.S. early next week.

AT THE BEACH: The weather looks fine for the central Gulf coast this weekend
and early next week, with about 8 to 10 hours of sun each day with only
isolated showers or storms. Temperatures will peak in the upper 80s on the
immediate coast (low 90s are likely inland), and the sea water temperature
at Pensacola last night was a very warm 89 degrees.
