...Mild Saturday Afternoon...

Temperatures are in the middle and upper 60s across Alabama on this
mid-February Saturday. Clouds were over much of the state, with only
some filtered sunshine. Showers were showing up on radar over
Southwest Alabama, ahead of a warm front that was organizing and
getting ready to lift northward ahead of our next storm system. '

SEVERE WEATHER WEST OF ALABAMA: Severe thunderstorms
were occurring over North Texas on this Saturday ahead of a strong
upper level low pressure system over Southwest Texas. This system
will be our next weather maker. Storms will increase through the
evening hours from eastern Texas and southern Oklahoma into Arkansas,
Louisiana and western Mississippi. Tornado watches have been issued.
The Storm Prediction Center continues a moderate risk outlook for
severe weather over Southeast Texas and western Louisiana. Here a few
strong tornadoes are possible before the system morphs into a powerful
squall line that will cause widespread damaging winds later tonight.

TONIGHT: Those showers will continue to lift northward
through the evening hours, but widespread rains are not expected.
Winds will increase out of the south and southeast overnight as the
surface low to the west of Alabama intensifies. After midnight, wind
chimes will be working overtime with those winds averaging 15-20 mph
with higher gusts.

SEVERE WEATHER FOR US? A complex weather map will be in
the cards by tomorrow morning, with a wedge of cool air over Northeast
Alabama, a warm front over Central Alabama and the intensifying low
pressure system over Central Missouri. The decaying line of storms
will be pushing out of eastern Mississippi into western Alabama during
the morning. Instability should be limited initially. But a surge of
moisture up into Alabama during the day and an approaching upper
disturbance may re-energize the storms, especially during the
afternoon over eastern sections. We stress that this is a developing
whether situation, and the intensity and timing of the system will be
difficult to pin down until late tonight into tomorrow. The line of
storms should exit eastern sections Sunday evening and much colder air
will flow into Alabama on northwesterly winds.

RAW MONDAY: Temperatures wil fall into the lower 40s by
Monday morning, with those brisk northwesterly winds continuing.
Temperatures will fall into the upper 30s during the morning hours
with mostly cloudy skies. Some clearing during the afternoon may
allow the mercury to make a late comeback intothe middle 40s, but some
places could stay in the 30s all day.

WEEK AHEAD: An unsettled period will be in place at the
end of the week, with strong storms possible Thursday, more showers on
Friday and another round of storms late on Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: Australia's worst brushfire
incident occurred as Australia was in the midst of a brutally hot and
dry summer. Driven by high winds, the fires whipped through the
tinder-dry brush as speeds of up to 100 mph killing 71. -

...Sunday Strong Storms...

I will have the great pleasure of greeting the Crenshaw
Leadership Academy of the University of Alabama this morning. This is
t he second year that I have gotten to speak to this bright and
interesting groups of young people. They give you hope for our world.

BIG SOUTHWEST STORM: That is a big and powerful upper
level storm system near El Paso this morning. It will be swinging
northeastward toward Missouri over the next twenty four hours,
spinning up a strong surface low that will move toward Missouri also.
We will find ourselves in an expanding warm sector over the next 36
hours. This means rain and thunderstorms for Alabama.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: Today will be a very pleasant mid-
February day. Mostly cloudy skies will become partly cloudy this
morning and afternoon highs will be mainly in the upper 60s. Several
spots will top 70 degrees. Our winds will veer around to the
southeast gradually, helping the warm up and bringing in increasing
moisture. With that increasing moisture, clouds will increase tonight
and there could be a late night shower over western sections. It will
also become windy overnight into Sunday, with winds averaging 15-30
mph with higher gusts.

STRONG STORMS TOMORROW: That big upper system will
become negatively tilted as it swings our way on Sunday. This is
usually an indication of an enhanced severe storm threat. A powerful
squall line will move across the area on Sunday. Wind fields will be
very strong on Sunday, with deep layer shear and low level spin
present. Damaging winds will be a real possibility, along with a few
isolated tornadoes within storms in the line or ahead of it. The
main threat should be generally south of US-82, but severe storms will
be possible to the Tennessee Valley. We will refine this forecast as
we head through the afternoon and overnight tonight into Sunday. The
squall line should exit eastern sections Sunday evening.

HEADS UP CHURCH OFFICIALS: Local churches should review
their severe weather action plans and be ready to implement them
tomorrow morning if need be. A key is having someone monitor weather
conditions in real time so that action can be taken if warnings are
issued.

NEXT WEEK: Monday looks to be a miserable day with
wraparound clouds, a blustery north wind and temperatures struggling
to get out of the 30s. There could be some surprise snow flurries
again like earlier this week. Monday night will be very cold again.
The next rain system is due in late in the week, likely Friday night.

WINTRY WEATHER: Cold air on the back side of this system
has produced heavy snows in New Mexico and ice from eastern New Mexico
into the Texas Panhandle. Up to six to ten inches of snow may fall
tomorrow over southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

THE BEGINNINGS OF OUR WEATHER SERVICE: "Be it resolved by the Senate
and House of Representatives of the United States of American in
Congress assembled that the Secretary of War be, and hereby is,
authorized and required to provide for taking meteorological
observations at the military stations in the interior of the continent
and at other points in the States and Territories of the United States
for giving notice on the northern lakes and seacoasts by magnetic
telegraph and marine signals, of the approach and force of storms."
This new law signed into effect on this date in 1870 by President
Ulysses S. Grant created a national weather service. The first
observations would be transmitted the following November 1st and storm
warnings issued for mariners on the Great Lakes. Read all about it in
my weather history post on our alabamawx.com blog

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story that includes another round of
thunderstorms on Sunday followed by windy and colder weather Monday
and another good freeze Tuesday morning. In all of that mix could be a
few insignificant snow flurries early Monday morning. Temperatures
will drop to the low 40s tonight. However, a warm front will push back
northward Saturday afternoon permitting the temperatures to soar well
into the 60s. Low temperatures last night, in most areas, were above
freezing. However, there were some cold pockets over on the east side
of the state. It was 23 in Muscadine, 25 in Black Creek and 27 in
Munford and Reese City.

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT: For Alabama, it appears that we could
have a few severe thunderstorms at some point Sunday or Sunday
evening. The better chance will probably be down over the south half
of the state. We cannot be absolutely sure of that until we see how
some things shape up to the west of Alabama tomorrow. The main surface
low-pressure area will be centered over SE Oklahoma late Saturday and
near St. Louis by daybreak Sunday. This will pull warm moist air
northward across Alabama, but it is not certain how much the dew point
will rise during the day. A cold front will reach Central Alabama
Sunday night. There is a possibility that the best time window will be
late Sunday morning through the afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center
has outlined a Slight Risk area from about Livingston to Calera and
Lafayette southward. It is early for that to be sealed in stone. The
slight risk area could possibly be moved a little bit northward later.
To the west, a Slight Risk area on Saturday will extend from Central
Texas to most of Louisiana and into South Arkansas with a Moderate
Risk over SE Texas.

THREE DOT STUFF: Writing this in incomplete sentences, so I can get
more in this little paragraph…coldest in the USA this morning was 31
below zero at Big Horn, Minnesota and 24 below at good old Deadhorse,
Alaska…a few snow totals, 50 on the ground at Whittier, Alaska, 45
inches at Nome, 47 at Valdez and 19 at Anchorage…Bangor, Maine has
received 74 inches of snow this winter, 30 inches more than they
should have by this time…Concord, New Hampshire had 33 inches on the
ground this morning…the first three hurricane/tropical storm names for
2008 will be Arthur, Bertha and Cristobal…did you know that the
Pacific Ocean was more than twice as large as the second largest
ocean, which is the Atlantic…the Pacific covers 60,060,700 square miles.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Quite a story out of South Texas where
the mayor of a town resigned after being accused of stealing her
neighbor's Shih-Tsu. That happens to be the kind of dog that Little
Miss Molly is. No danger of that happening in my tiny corner, because
everybody love Molly except a few that do not like any dogs. If Molly
were to get dog-napped, in some ways that would be as tough as losing
her to an illness because I would not know where she was or how she
would be treated. That little girl slept in until 11:00 this morning.
I miss those days when she was younger when she would jump up on the
king-sized bed, walk up my little body and poke me with her little
cold nose wanting to go at 4:00 a.m. She would not take no for an
answer, so away we went with her tail wagging and me shaking my head
to get ungroggy. Life goes on......

...Severe Storms Possible Sunday...

ACTIVE WEATHER RETURNS ON SUNDAY: Alabama's warming trend continues
today; we expect a high this afternoon in the low 60s with some
sunshine through scattered to broken clouds. Clouds will thicken a bit
tonight as a weak surface front moves through Alabama. At this point
we don't expect any significant rain with the front due to the lack of
moisture and dynamics. Temperatures tomorrow will be only a few
degrees cooler behind the front, and most folks probably won't notice
the difference. Our forecast tomorrow will feature a mix of sun and
clouds with a high in the upper 50s. Most of Alabama will be dry
tomorrow.

To the west, a major storm system will move slowly through the
Southwest U.S. today, producing heavy snow for the southern Rockies.
That disturbance will move into Texas tomorrow, and will ultimately
impact Alabama's weather in a big way on Sunday. A few showers might
show up tomorrow night as the surface front moves northward across the
state as a warm front, but the main round of showers and storms will
come Sunday afternoon as the main upper trough approaches from the west.

Based on the strength of the upper trough and the associated wind
fields, we will mention a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms in
the general period from 12:00 noon through 9:00 p.m. Sunday. The key
to the severe weather risk will be the instability; for now it looks
like the most favorable instability axis over Alabama will be along
and south of I-20 (a line from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston).
However, we can't rule out a chance of severe storms all the way to
the Tennessee border. Damaging straight line winds will be possible,
and helicity values suggest a few isolated tornadoes could form as
well. On the positive side, we expect average rain amounts of one
inch, with some spots possibly getting more.

ANOTHER COLD AIR SHOT: Following the storms on Sunday, another blast
of very cold air moves into Alabama on Monday. We will have a hard
time getting out of the 30s Monday, and a few morning snow flurries
are possible, Then, a hard freeze is likely by daybreak Tuesday with a
clear sky and light wind.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The coldest places in the nation yesterday were
Atqasuk and Wainwright, Alaska with 34 below zero. The coldest places
in the lower 48 were Flag Island and Warroad, Minnesota with -20.
Montello, Wisconsin measured 13 inches of new snow yesterday. Warmest
spot in the nation yesterday afternoon was Laredo, Texas with 88
degrees.

STORM ALERT 2008: The next stop on the Storm Alert 2008 tour is Clay
County… we will be at Lineville High School next Thursday night
(February 21) at 7:00; the doors open at 5:00. Make plans now to come
early and bring the whole family; we will have some amazing Alabama
weather stories and some great prizes to give away!

SUNDAY LOOKS STORMY: After all of those illegal snow flurries moved
away yesterday, clouds moved out leaving us with a clear and very cold
night. There was a freeze all the way to the coast. Just a few of the
lows early this morning:

14 Remlap
26 Vinemont, Cottondale, Moody
17 Ashville, Hamilton
20 Huntsville
21 Birmingham Airport, Anniston
24 Montgomery
30 Mobile

With very dry air still entrenched over Alabama, the temperature will
drop to near freezing again tonight with possibly some upper 20s in
the NE Alabama valleys. The thermometer should recover to near 60
Friday, not quite that warm on Saturday and even milder on Sunday as
big storms approach from the west.

FOCUS ON SUNDAY: While we could have a few showers Saturday, the
main show should come on Sunday. A low-pressure area moving out of the
SW will move up across NW Arkansas and head toward Indiana over the
weekend. Here in Central Alabama, our main showers and thunderstorms
should be mostly Sunday afternoon and Sunday night and some of those
could be severe. The Storm Prediction Center has tentatively outlined
that part of Alabama from about Tuscaloosa and Birmingham southward at
a Slight Risk for Sunday. That is a tentative outlook at the moment.
Depending on a number of things, the Slight Risk area could possibly
be extended further northward later.

Again on Monday, we will have wrap around colder air pouring in and
there could be a few flurries over about the north one-third of the
state, but again no problem is expected.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Just got off the phone with my sister-in-law,
Peggy Siegel in Layton Utah, and she reports an average snow depth in
their yard of 4 feet with bigger drifts. It is also very windy. There
were whiteout conditions yesterday, which means you could lose your
sense of direction. There were numerous wrecks and about 6 people in
the area hospitalised. The storm was so strong that some schools had
to keep the children overnight. There was no way to get them home.
Early this afternoon, a wind gust of 71 mph was measured 5 miles east
of Ogden in the canyon. Those canyon winds can cause 18-wheelers to be
blown over on I-15 as it passes near the mouth of the canyon. We were
camping one night in Logan Canyon and the wind blew our tent away and
left us lying on the cold ground.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Did you notice that a beagle hound one
the big contest a day or so ago? Reports are that his personality made
him the crowd favorite. I was glad to see that, because usually it is
a high society dog that wins. Wonder if I could trade in Little Miss
Molly and get me a beagle hound? I would love to see Little Miss Molly
in a contest. I believe she could win over the judges in a flash. It
only took her 32 seconds to win me over when she walked into our house
5 years ago. Life goes on.....

...Sunshine Returns In Full Force...

A BRIGHTER AND WARMER DAY: While we will begin this day well below
freezing, we expect a big warm-up during the day with maximum
available sunshine. Most communities will reach the upper 50s this
afternoon; some places in West Alabama could touch 60. Quite a rebound
from a harshly cold day yesterday; Birmingham's daytime high was only
32 degrees, and up in Cullman County, our Skywatcher in Vinemont
reported an afternoon high of only 28 degrees. Morning snow flurries
and showers got lots of folks excited, but all of the flakes were gone
by midday as the clearing process initiated over West Alabama.

Tomorrow will be a dry day with a partly sunny sky and a high in the
low 60s. Then, tomorrow night, we will introduce the chance of a few
scattered showers as moist air returns to Alabama. A
few scattered showers are possible as well on Saturday, but the day
will not be a wash-out, and there will be periods of sunshine.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT SUNDAY: A strong upper air trough will approach
from the west on Sunday, and a strong surface low will spin up in
response to the upper trough near Memphis by midday Sunday. This will
put much of Alabama in the warm sector of the developing storm system,
and based on the strength of the upper trough and associated wind
fields, it sure looks like we will have to deal with strong to severe
thunderstorms. As usual for events in February, the key to the actual
severity of the event is the amount of instability that is present.
While this system certainly doesn't look as potent as the one that
brought the historic tornado outbreak to the Deep South February 5-6,
it is very dynamic and could bring thunderstorms with strong winds,
and maybe even a few isolated tornadoes. We will watch it closely in
coming days. One good thing is the expected rain; looks like most
Alabama communities can expect one inch of rain on Sunday, with
isolated totals to two inches.

FROM BRIAN PETERS: Brian's daughter Rebecca, who lives in Chicago,
called him Tuesday evening to tell him that they had six more inches
of snow - I think they've had over 45 inches so far this winter making
this the 9th highest seasonal snowfall total on record through
February 13th for Chicago. This winter has been very cold, and very
snowy for much of the Midwest U.S.

COLD SOAKING RAIN: Boston was soaked with 2.81" of rain yesterday with
a high of only 40 degrees. As you went inland through New England,
there was lots of freezing rain, ice, and some snow yesterday.

STORM ALERT 2008 COMING TO CLAY COUNTY: A reminder that we will not
have a Storm Alert show tonight (this week's show was Tuesday night in
Northport). Our next event will be one week from tonight, Thursday
February 21, when we visit Lineville High School down in Clay County.
The show begins at 7:00; doors open at 5:00!

===========================================

DANDRUFF SIZE DOUGHNUTS: That is about as big as the snowflakes got,
although some larger ones were reported around Cullman. I feel sure if
someone from Buffalo could look in on us via remote video today they
would roll in the snow laughing. Amazing the excitement and adrenalin
a few flakes can trigger in the Deep South.

It was my fault that we had not mentioned flurries in our early
morning forecast. We thought there could be some over the extreme
north, but certainly not as far south as Greensboro. We find it also
difficult at times to forecast clearing behind a cold front. It often
throws us a curve like it did today.

Temperatures were still in the 20s this afternoon across the
Tennessee Valley with brisk NW winds, but most of the snowflakes had
left town. It will be clearing this evening and by daybreak,
temperatures should be in the lower 20s over a good part of North
Alabama and maybe some upper teens in the normally colder locations.

That was quite a change of temperature overnight. One example, which
was typical: at Birmingham, the temperature plunged 47 degrees
overnight from a high of 73 yesterday to a low of 28 later this morning.

A DAY OF SUNSHINE: We can sort of give you a written guarantee on
that and temperatures will rebound to near 60 in the afternoon, which
will feel like summer as compared to today. Down the road we expect
some more showers to arrive late Friday and Friday night. There will
be a chance of showers also on Saturday, but our next big rain event
will come on Sunday. The projection is for a significant low-pressure
area to be over Louisiana early Sunday pulling a warm front north from
the Gulf of Mexico. The low will move NE and deepen into a major
storm. You know the routine. By Monday, this is going to bring a major
problem to the Mid-Atlantic and NE states.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Have you ever seen so many multi-car pileups
weather related as we have had in the last month or so? There was one
earlier this week on a major interstate in Wisconsin that involved
dozens of cars and took forever to clear. In fact, officials launched
an investigation to see why it took so long. USA temperature extremes
included 89 yesterday afternoon at Falfurrias in South Texas to 23
below zero this morning at Upson, Wisconsin where there is 23 inches
of snow on the ground. The low in Alaska was 35 below at Kaltag. It
has been a long time since I have noticed so much of Alaska under so
much of a snow cover. There was 40 inches more on the ground this
morning at Whittier, Valdez and Nome.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: According to Newsweek that came
yesterday there are an estimated 72 million dogs in the United States
and each one produces an average of 274 pounds of "you know what."
That means a lot of little blue scoops are busy. In the five years
that I have walked Little Miss Molly, I can truthfully say that I have
failed to clean up after her only a very few times and that would be
when I would lose it in the darkness at night. I became known in the
community as the "king of poop." I do not want to write about that too
much, because I promised some reader's requests that I would quit
writing about Miss Molly's bathroom habits, although it is only nature
taking its course. Life goes on anyway......

...Sharply Colder...

QUICK ACTING WEATHER CHANGES: I guess we could say the weather is
more exciting when it is in almost constant change. Sometimes that
excitement leads to disappointment as it did yesterday afternoon and
last evening as a line of very strong thunderstorms moved west to east
across the state. A Tornado Watch affected almost the south half of
the state much of the afternoon and well into the evening. There was
scattered wind damage, but by far it seemed rougher over the far
south. At 4:34 p.m., numerous trees were reported down in the vicinity
of Mobile Regional Airport. Winds were officially clocked at 57 mph at
the airport and to 74 mph of the east end of Dauphin Island. One of
our weather reporters clocked 2.33 inches of rain in less than an hour
at Semmes along with strong winds. Further north, there was a gust to
63 mph at the Demopolis Skycam and 56 mph at the downtown Birmingham
Skycam. The Tuscaloosa Fire Department reported power lines down in
the 500 block of 12th Avenue around 4:30. Most of the storms had moved
out of the state by late last night as much colder air began to pour
in from the NW. This is going to be a significant swing in
temperature. It was 73 in Birmingham yesterday afternoon, but it
should be around 25 by daybreak tomorrow. Temperatures today will
struggle to get out of the upper 30s in the Tennessee Valley along
with NW winds 12-25 mph. Do not be surprised to hear that there were a
few patches of light snow or light freezing rain as the precipitation
came to an end. It should be mostly sunshine later this morning and
just about all sunshine on Thursday.

MORE GOOD RAIN EVENTS: Showers will start again Friday afternoon and
increase at night. A good chance of showers also on Saturday becoming
more numerous Saturday night along with some thunderstorms and still a
good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday. In all of this
across Central Alabama, the rain could amount to around 1.50 inches.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Numerous trees were uprooted at Brandon,
Mississippi late yesterday. In all, the Storm Prediction Center
received 10 reports of tornadoes and 79 wind reports. Most of these
came from South Louisiana and Southern Mississippi. The warmest
temperature in the nation yesterday afternoon was 88 at Edinburg and
McAllen in South Texas. In Anchorage, the high temperature has
averaged 12 degrees colder than average over the last three weeks.
That is most unusual. Not as cold in Alaska now as it was a few days
ago.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One of our good friends got a good
report yesterday that their little doggie named Penny was okay. We had
all been worried for a time. Little Miss Molly had a typical day—
eating, sleeping, playing, barking, security detail. She has taken
full responsibility for keeping us all safe. If anybody comes down the
walking track, she lets them know that they are not welcome unless she
knows them. But she has a host of friends that she wants to run out
and have them give her a belly rub and scratch her head. Life goes on.

PROGRESSIVE WEATHER PATTERN: That is what we call it when the same
weather does not stay around very long and storm systems continue to
march across the weather map. It is truly one of those times that if
you do not like the weather now, hang on for a while. So, here we go
again.

Showers and thunderstorms were increasing across Louisiana and
Mississippi this afternoon. A Tornado Watch was in effect for the
southern half of Alabama until 8:00 p.m. Wind damage has been reported
near Jackson, and tornado warnings were in efect for a number of East
Mississippi counties at early afternoon. A few severe storms are
possible this evening over the central and southern part of Alabama.

Our showers and thunderstorms will be winding down before daybreak in
most areas and it will be turning sharply colder before daybreak. We
will have to watch for the possibility of a brief change over to some
light freezing rain over the extreme north. We do not expect any of
that along the I-20 corridor.

Brisk NW winds will gust over 25 mph at times tomorrow as the colder
air pours in. Clouds should move out rather quickly by late morning.
This opens the gate for another good freeze Wednesday night with lows
in the mid 20s. As always, some of the traditional colder North
Alabama valleys may have 20 to 25.

That is not the end of our story. Clouds will increase again on Friday
with more showers and storms arriving late in the day and increasing
at night. Still a good chance of showers and thunderstorms on
Saturday, especially through the morning.

STORM ALERT 2008: It starts tonight at 7:00 in the Northport Civic
Center. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Be sure and get there early. There are
free T-shirts while they last and prizes during the program.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Remarkable warm up, if you can call it that, in
Northern Minnesota. It was only 1 below zero this morning at
International Falls, which was 39 degrees higher than yesterday
morning. Coldest this morning in the lower four dozen states was 22
below zero at Saranac Lake, New York and Land o' Lakes, Wisconsin.
Saranac Lake and other places in Northern New York will get big
bunches of additional tonight and tomorrow. Louisville got 4 inches of
snow yesterday and similar amounts at Lexington and Brandenburg,
Kentucky. Brandenburg is on the Ohio River SW of Louisville and that
town was severely damaged during the Super Outbreak of tornadoes in
April 1974. New cars from a automobile dealership became airborne and
were dumped into the Ohio River.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Do not ever know what will happen when
Little Miss Molly and I head out for a walk. Yesterday afternoon, for
her, it was so exciting. Immediately out the door, the new dog on the
block, a dachshund two houses away, came racing across the yard to try
to get to Molly. He reached the end of his leash and was jerked
backwards. Molly tried to go down and meet him. All of this set off a
big commotion with two larger dogs on the other side of the hedgerow.
They started barking and trying to reach Molly. Meanwhile, out of the
corner of her eye, she saw the little Yorkie (the love of her life)
approaching on the walk. They raced toward each other at breakneck
speed and had a long play and loving session while the other dogs kept
up the music by barking. Life goes on and it is always exciting.....
