...A Mixed Up Weather Pattern...

Trough. It is a weather word that we have gotten used to hearing this
summer. I am not complaining. Troughs mean more clouds and
precipitation, as well as less really hot summer weather in the Deep
South. The persistent trough over the East will be around for much of
the week ahead, finally lifting out before the weekend.
FOR YOUR WEEKEND: Troughs and showers go together like peanut butter
and jelly. Not only do we have the larger, or longwave trough over the
East, little troughs rippling through the flow will help to focus a
few periods of showers and storms through the weekend. Finally, by
late tomorrow, the trough will muscle a front through the area,
bringing us cooler and drier air.

A NEW WORK WEEK: The coming airmass will look and act a lot like the
one that we experienced earlier this week. This means more 50s in some
lucky spots Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Ahhhh…. Things
will be dry for much of the week ahead. In fact, it is pretty safe to
say that we will be dry into the weekend.

SNEAK PEEK LABOR DAY WEEKEND: The coming airmass will look and act a
lot like the one that we experienced earlier this week. This means
more 50s in some lucky spots Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
Ahhhh…. Things will be dry for much of the week ahead. In fact, it is
pretty safe to say that we will be dry into the weekend.

TROPICS: Struggling Hurricane Danny is off the North Carolina coast
this morning. The storm is moving north and is expected to turn
northeast today. We could see some tropical storm force gusts over New
England as the storm passes east of the area. There will be high surf.
Although it is not expected to be as bad as Bill, it did claim the
life of a North Carolina youth on Friday.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 187: The WeatherBrains crew had a great visit
with coastal scientist Ivor van Heerden. He gave a frank account of
what went wrong in Hurricane Katrina and fielded some tough questions
from the panel. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com to listen, or subscribe
at iTunes. Follow the show on Twitter @WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: The 1995 North Atlantic Hurricane Season was one
of the busiest ever. The National Hurricane Center had their hands
full on this date, as they tracked dissipating Tropical Storm Jerry, a
strong tropical wave and 4 named storms (Hurricane Humberto, Hurricane
Iris, Tropical Storm Karen and Tropical Storm Luis.)

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Record heat continued across the Deep South.
Tuscaloosa recorded 107F, which tied their all-time record high
established during the extremely hot summer of 1952 on July 28th and
29th. Interestingly, the temperature at Tuscaloosa dropped 25 degrees
in ten minutes when a late afternoon thunderstorm moved over the
observation site. The mercury reached 105 degrees at Mobile, setting
an all-time record high for the Port City. The record high also
established a new mark for most 100 degree days in a summer in Mobile,
as it was the 8th day in 2000 that the temperature was 100 or hotter.

...A Mixed Up Weather Pattern...

NICE CHANGE TO COOLER MONDAY: An upper level low-pressure area can
cause a lot of headaches for weather forecasters. A few days ago, an
upper low formed over South Louisiana and started moving south. It
looped around across the Northern Gulf of Mexico. In doing so, it
dispatched a lot of very moist air inland, which translated to showers
and thunderstorms. We saw a distinct example of that yesterday when
showers and thunderstorms became fairly numerous. Early this morning,
that same upper level low was over the SE corner of Alabama and NW
Florida. It was still sending lots of showers and thunderstorms
northward, but overnight the main areas getting those were near the
Georgia/Alabama border, but more so in West Georgia.

By this afternoon, the main action had shifted further east into East
Georgia and part of South Carolina. Showers across Alabama had thinned
out a great deal this afternoon. As I usually ask, what does all this
maneuvering mean for Alabama? We have to look to our northwest where
another frontal boundary is looking longingly to visit us. It should
be near the NW corner of Alabama early Saturday. By Sunday morning it
should be nearly stalled over South Alabama and by Monday morning
completely stalled along the coast. This scenario probably means the
following: scattered showers and thunderstorms on Saturday with the
best chance afternoon and evening. By Sunday the scattered showers and
thunderstorms will have a better chance over the south half of
Alabama. Finally, less humid dry weather for Monday and Tuesday.
Even our most trusted weather models have not shaken hands over this
deal. At least one of those keeps a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms even into Sunday.

HOW COOL WILL IT GET? We look for upper 50s Monday morning and mid
50s Tuesday morning. There could even be some lows around 48 in NE
Alabama Tuesday morning.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: About a 1 in 3 chance of a thunderstorm at any one
stadium during the high school games tonight. Of course, lightning is
the main issue and should never be taken lightly.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Danny is still expected to stay off
shore as he moves north and then curves toward the NE, but he may come
very close to the Maine coast and Cape Cod late in the weekend. At
2:00 this afternoon, sustained winds were down to 40 mph. Meanwhile,
over halfway across the Atlantic, a broad area of low pressure was 900
miles WSW of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands. The NHC says
conditions are favourable for slow development over the next couple of
days as it moves west about 15 mph. They place a 30-50% chance for
this one becoming a named tropical storm that would be Erika. After
Erika comes Fred. James Spann has jokingly said it might be a big one.

MISCELLANEOUS: I still wish people would stop tailgating my beloved
96 Olds—the best car I have ever owned. ¼ inch of rain yesterday at
San Antonio and a whopping 1.42 inches at Austin in the heart of the
most severe drought. Surely University of Texas students were dancing
in the streets. The place I would like to be today is at Nootka
Lighthouse, British Columbia with occasional light rain and 59
degrees. It was 25 degrees at Chandalar Lake, Alaska for the coldest
in the USA.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our great grandchildren, ages 2 and 1,
were with us yesterday afternoon and last night. Translation: poor
little Miss Molly had to go nap-less. In fact, she spent hours
trying to stay out of the way. At one time, they were throwing their
toys at Molly (they were punished for doing that). When she finally
turned in to the king-size bed toward midnight, she slept until noon
today. So if have not had a chance to talk with her or love her, but I
will catch up. I am recovering from a fall and a stiff neck, but life
goes on.

...Unsettled Through Tomorrow...

MOIST AIR HANGS OVER ALABAMA: The combination of a very moist airmass,
and an upper low in the North-Central Gulf of Mexico will keep our
weather rather unsettled through tomorrow, with occasional showers and
a few thunderstorms. While the most numerous showers and storms could
come during the afternoon and evening, we sure can't rule out a late
night or morning shower. There will be a few intervals of sunshine,
and the high today and tomorrow will be in the mid 80s. Additional
rain amounts of 1/2 inch are likely, with locally heavier amounts.

A cold front will move into Central Alabama by Sunday afternoon. We
will hang on to the chance of a few stray showers Sunday morning, but
we believe by Sunday afternoon the bulk of the showers and storms will
be down over the southern half of our state.

REFRESHING WEATHER NEXT WEEK: Another dry continental airmass will
roll into Alabama Sunday night, and that will set the stage for
delightful weather for at least the first half of next
week. Lows will be down in the 50s Monday and Tuesday, and there is
actually a chance some of the colder valleys across North Alabama
could reach the upper 40s at daybreak Tuesday. Highs will be around
80, and the humidity will be very low. Most of the week will be rain-
free.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school football games across
North and Central Alabama, the chance of any one high school game site
getting wet is about one in three, so I would take along the rain gear
just in case. Temperatures should be in the upper 70s when the games
begin this evening with a mostly cloudy sky.

BE A PART OF THE BLITZ: Our pals in the sports office could use a
little help tonight for Alabama's best high school football show.
Follow the Blitz on Twitter @3340blitz, and please take the time to
send in scores via Twitter using the hash tag #alfb. If you don't
understand what this means, don't worry about it, just check out the
show on TV! It begins right right after I finish the weather, around
10:15. This is the 13th year for the Blitz.

TROPICS: Tropical storm Danny will brush by the upper Atlantic coast
of the U.S. tomorrow, possibly as a minimal hurricane. While the core
of the system should remain offshore, conditions will be windy and wet
at times from Chesapeake Bay north. Then, by tomorrow night and Sunday
the system will be over Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in East Canada.
A well organized tropical wave continues over the East Atlantic,
southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. There is a chance this could
become a tropical depression today, and possibly Tropical Storm Erika
over the weekend. Still too early to determine if this one will make
it into the Caribbean, or make a north turn before reaching the
islands. We will keep an eye on it.

ANOTHER FRONT LATE IN WEEKEND: It sure is interesting to sit in our
weather offices and watch the air masses across the country maneuver
for position and try to figure out what they are going to cause as
they move from place to place. That is better known as weather and it
changes almost daily in most sections of the country. Sometimes those
changes are right on the money and sometimes they feature small
surprises. The group of showers and thunderstorms that formed over SE
Alabama last night was only semi-expected. An upper area of low
pressure over South Louisiana was the main culprit. It started moving
southward today kicking up more showers and thunderstorms northward
from the Gulf of Mexico into Alabama. There was even one report of 1/4-
inch hail in NW Jefferson County. This afternoon most of the showers
and thunderstorms in the good old USA were over the NE Gulf of Mexico,
North Florida, South Georgia and SE Alabama. Around the rest of the
USA, it was a fairly quiet day.
So what does all this mean for Alabama? It means another frontal
passage. We have had a number of those in the last couple of months
giving us some notable breaks from high humidity right here in summer
and now we have another one. It should enter NW Alabama early Saturday
and move through most of the state by Sunday morning. This should give
us clearing pleasant weather on Sunday with lowering humidity.

Monday should feature sunshine, low humidity and some early morning
temperatures as low as the mid 50s. We should stay in that cool dry
air mass at least through the middle of next week. We cannot rule out
a few showers early in the week, but high temperatures should hang
around the mid 80s.

TROPICAL: Tropical Storm Danny was wobbling a bit toward the west this
afternoon. Interests from the Carolinas north to New England should
watch his progress. A Tropical Storm Watch may be required for part of
that area later today. The center of Danny was about 120 miles NE of
Nassau or about 550 miles SSE of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. He was
moving somewhat erratically toward the NW at 13 mph. He should
continue that way today, then with a turn toward the north with a
faster speed on Friday. The official forecast track the center off the
U.S. coast, but he comes awfully close to Eastport, Maine by Sunday
morning.

Meanwhile, a new tropical wave over the far east Atlantic was about
350 miles SSW of the Cape Verde Islands. It shows sign of organization
and slow development is possible over the next few days as it moves
west at 10-15 mph. NHC believes there is a 30-50% chance of this
system becoming a named storm in the next 48 hours.

AT THE BEACH: Most high temperatures through the weekend will be in
the upper 80s. While there will be some showers and thunderstorms each
day, Saturday probably offers the best chance and then mostly sunny
and less humid weather Sunday and Monday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has been catching up on
her sleep since her birthday two days ago. She sure did get a lot of
attention and while she has no idea what it was about, she never
turned it down. I had planned to buy her one of those little spiked
balls for her birthday, but I could not find one. That has been her
all-time favorite toy because she can run across the room, retrieve it
in a San Antonio second and come racing back and throw it at my feet.
I really would like to have about three of them to keep them flying in
the air all the time. That would blow her little mind and probably
mine also. Life goes on.....

...Scattered Showers Return...

MOISTURE INCREASING: We will introduce the chance of scattered showers
across Alabama this afternoon and tonight as moisture levels continue
to increase. The most numerous showers this afternoon should be over
the eastern half of the state. We will maintain the chance of
scattered showers and thunderstorms through Saturday as we remain in a
moist airmass, and a broad upper low lingers near the Gulf coast.
Afternoon highs will be mostly in the mid 80s.

A cold front will pass through late in the weekend, so we will
maintain the risk of a shower or two Sunday, but dry air takes over,
and another delightful airmass will move in here early next week.
Highs will drop to near 80, with lows in the 50s Monday and Tuesday of
next week with low humidity values. This is perfect timing since
September begins Tuesday, the day that we consider the beginning of
meteorological fall. The autumnal equinox this year will be on
September 22 at 4:18 p.m. CDT.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Yep, time for the pigskins to start flying across
our state. For high school football games tonight, most of West
Alabama will be dry, but there is about a one in three chance of any
stadium over the eastern half of the state seeing a passing shower.
Kickoff temperatures tonight will be around 79 degrees. Very similar
weather for tomorrow night, although the showers could be a little
more numerous. Again, kickoff temperatures should be in the upper 70s,
and the most numerous showers will be over East Alabama.

DANNY BOY: Tropical Storm Danny could become a minimal hurricane
during the next 36 hours; the system will be very close to the New
England coast this weekend. The system is forecast to be only about
100 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey Saturday afternoon, and
then just east of Cape Cod by Saturday night. Much like Hurricane Bill
a week ago, very rough surf is likely along the upper half of the
Atlantic coast, and some heavy rain will be possible at times. Airport
delays are likely at the major airports in Philadelphia, New York
City, and Boston over the weekend due to the effects of Danny.

Elsewhere across the tropics, a tropical wave is in the far eastern
Atlantic south of the Cape Verde Islands, but development is not
expected in the short term due to harsh upper air winds across the
region.

FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY: Hurricane Katrina was bigger, stronger and
better organized. Reconnaissance reports indicated that the central
pressure had dropped to 940 millibars. Already rated as a category
three hurricane, it was becoming evident that the storm could be a
category four at landfall, which was projected to be directly over New
Orleans with winds of 140 mph. As residents from Louisiana to
Northwest Florida awakened, they were greeted with a steady stream of
information about forecast tracks, evacuations and highway reversals.
By mid-morning, Parishes in Southeast Louisiana were beginning to
order mandatory evacuations in the phases as planned for in the
state's hurricane plan. Hurricane Watches were issued for the
Louisiana coast, including New Orleans.

...Showers Back In The Picture...

THE ALABAMA STORY: Cannot let showers and thunderstorms stay out of
our weather menu for very long this time of year. Yes, it is possible
they will become more scarce as we get over into September and
especially in October. Adding up all the Octobers since weather
records began in the mid 1880s, October has pretty much proven to be
the driest month of the year. Mind you, a weather situation can flip-
flop so markedly that it can be the wettest month of the year in any
given year. That depends almost entirely on hurricanes or tropical
storms.
Actually, we do have showers and some thunderstorms getting back in
our weather picture over the next few days. A few will show up
tomorrow, but the better chance will be Friday and part of Saturday.

In recent weeks, we have had a number of little thermal boundaries (we
are too chicken to call them cold fronts) that pushed down from the
NW. We have another one that wants to give us a visit. We now expect
the latest front to be near the NW corner of Alabama when the rooster
crows Saturday morning. By Sunday morning, it should be way down
south. Like almost all of the others this time of the year, it will
stall just off shore. This one is not as pronounced as the last one,
so do not look for record-breaking low temperatures like we had a few
days ago. We could possibly see some upper 50s by around Tuesday
morning, but you will feel a drop in humidity again late this weekend.

AT THE BEACH: High temperatures over the weekend should be tolerable,
mostly around 88. The best chance of showers and thunderstorms will be
Thursday, but there will be some
each day through the weekend. Not an all-day rain and there will be
several hours of sunshine each day and no threat of a tropical storm.

TROPICAL WEATHER: His name is Danny. Not too long ago we had one
named Danny that stalled over the North Gulf of Mexico and brought
major flooding to Dauphin Island. This one is not expected to enter
the Gulf of Mexico. Danny was centered about 445 miles east of Nassau
and about 775 miles SSE of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. He was
moving WNW at a good clip around 18 mph. He is expected to turn more
NW and slow down his forward speed and with an eventual turn toward
the NNW by Friday. Highest sustained winds were 45 mph and he should
slowly grow stronger. He will take a curved path somewhat like Bill,
but all along he will be closer to the east coast of the United
States. Persons in the northeast, especially from about Washington or
Philadelphia on, should keep in close touch.

FINAL WRAP UP: The only part of the good old USA dealing with severe
thunderstorms today is extreme SE Texas and part of that is in the
edge of the severe drought area. Not the most desirable way to help a
drought. Hottest in the country yesterday was Imperial, California
with 108. Low this morning was 34 at Lakeview, Oregon. In the drought
area, it was 100 yesterday again and San Antonio 101 in Austin, 103 in
Waco and 106 in Wichita Falls.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: No way we can individually thank all of
you for the numerous birthday wishes for my Little Miss Molly in the
last 24 hours. We are glad you enjoyed the special story and
photographs of her on the ABC 33/40 Weather BLOG. We had 47 greetings
sent to her on the weather BLOG and about 20 e-mails. As we have said
before, we have been astounded at the amount of interest in that
little 9-pound dog, but we love every minute of it. I hope to be able
to write about her for many more years. One thing for sure, there is
never a shortage of material. Life goes on.

...Moisture Levels Increasing...

FEELING LIKE AUGUST AGAIN: Rising heat and humidity levels will remind
us that this is still August in Alabama. We are forecasting afternoon
high temperatures in the 88 to 91 degree range today, and with
dewpoints rising into the mid to upper 60s, the afternoon warmth will
be a little more sticky. An isolated shower could pop up on radar
somewhere around here this afternoon, but the chance of any one spot
getting is so small we won't mention it in our formal forecast. We
will introduce the chance of widely scattered showers tomorrow as
moisture levels continue to increase.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Deeper moisture on Friday and Saturday will
mean the risk of a few scattered showers and thunderstorms both days.
No all-day rain or a wash-out, but keep in mind a few passing showers
are possible. The chance of any one high school stadium seeing a
shower Friday night is about one in four. A cold front will pass
through here late Saturday night or early Sunday, followed by another
nice surge of dry continental air from the north. We will mention the
risk of a stray shower Sunday morning, but the sky will become partly
sunny Sunday afternoon as the dry air takes over.

The first half of next week looks very comfortable, with mostly sunny
days and pleasantly cool nights. There is a pretty decent chance we
wind up in the upper 50s again by Monday and Tuesday morning, with
highs only in the low to mid 80s.

TROPICS: A disturbance in the Atlantic east of the Bahamas and north
of the Virgin Islands is forecast to become a tropical depression
today, and possibly Tropical Storm Danny by Friday. This system is
expected to follow a track almost identical to that of Hurricane Bill
last week; it will recurve just off the East Coast of the U.S.,
brushing by the Canadian Maritimes this weekend, perhaps as a minimal
hurricane. Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet.

FOUR YEARS AGO: Early on Friday morning, August 26, 2005, Tropical
Storm Katrina was completing her short traversal of the southern end
of the Florida Peninsula and emerging over the Gulf of Mexico. The
storm briefly weakened from hurricane strength to tropical storm
intensity for just a few hours. Moving just south of due west,
Katrina emerged into the Gulf of Mexico about 2 a.m. CDT. Within four
hours, the storm had regained hurricane strength and entered a period
of rapid deepening. The morning forecast package indicated that the
hurricane would turn northwest and then north, making a second
landfall near Panama City, Florida in about 72 hours. Through the day,
the hurricane's central pressure dropped from 987 millibars to 965
millibars by late afternoon and top winds increased to 100 mph. The
late afternoon forecast package shifted the official track 150 miles
to the west, with a projected landfall just west of Mobile.
Forecasters cautioned that the track was still very uncertain, and
that the models were actually beginning to agree on an even more
westerly landfall in southeastern Louisiana.

...August Slowly Returning...

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: We are gradually recovering from our cool snap
and slowly going back to the kind of weather that we should have in
the last week of August. Remember, we in the weather business do not
go precisely by astronomy, because we consider the beginning of autumn
starting next Tuesday. So now we head into a slow cool down over the
next several weeks, but we must caution that it can get very hot in
September. As we have mentioned a number of times, the highest
official temperature ever recorded in Alabama occurred in Bibb County
on September 5, 1925 when the thermometer worked overtime and peaked
at 112 at Centreville.

We do not see any evidence of a severe late season heat wave like that
this year. There are increasing indications that we can work our way
through the rest of the summer and early autumn without crippling
heat. One thing that is so interesting about weather, however, is that
there are never any written guarantees.

It was cool across Alabama again this morning, but not as much so as
yesterday morning. Most of the low temperatures were between 60 and
65. We are in generally good shape on the rain scorecard at Birmingham
Airport. Our surplus for the year as of today was just under 4 inches.

Look for mostly sunshine again tomorrow as afternoon temperatures edge
slowly upward. Most communities will see around 90 Wednesday afternoon
and close to 90 Thursday afternoon.

THE CHANCE OF RAIN: Wednesday should be dry and most of Thursday.
There is a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon
starting Thursday with a slight increase on Friday and Saturday.
Another bit of good news, at least for most folks, is that a fairly
strong high-pressure system will insist on reaching the area by Monday
and this one being slightly stronger than the last two. That should
give us some more very pretty weather early next week.

AT THE BEACH: Most people are in school, so I assume that visitors to
the Alabama/NW Florida beaches have decreased in number, but it looks
generally good for the rest of the week with highs in the upper 80s.
There will be a few showers and thunderstorms each afternoon. Probably
the better chance will be about Saturday.

IN THE TROPICS: We still have a long way to go before the official
hurricane season ends. There is an area of disturbed weather
negotiating with an upper-level low centered about 325 miles NNE of
San Juan, Puerto Rico. It continues to show signs of organization and
upper-level winds are expected to become friendlier for development
during the next day or so. The NHC is so optimistic that they rate the
chance of it becoming a tropical depression or tropical storm as
greater than 50%.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This is a delightful time around our
home in NE Trussville because of one little 9-pound animal. Her name
is Little Miss Molly almost universally loved by people all over the
country because we write about her every day in this one little
paragraph. Today is her 7th birthday and she is being treated royally.
She simply waltzed into our living area on a Sunday afternoon about 7
years ago and with her little paws, big eyes and rapidly wagging tail,
she swooned the whole room full of people. She has held us captive
ever since. Please check out the special story about Miss Molly on the
ABC 33/40 Weather BLOG. In fact, there are two recent pictures of that
little girl. I truly would not take a gold thermometer for her. Life
goes on.

...Afternoons Getting Warmer...

WARMER DAYS: Following several mornings that have felt more like the
middle of autumn, a warming trend begins across our state this
afternoon. With a good supply of sunshine, look for a high in the
upper 80s this afternoon. There is a good chance we touch 90 degrees
tomorrow as heat and humidity levels slowly increase.

Enough moisture moves into the state by Thursday to mention the risk
of an afternoon shower, but those showers should be widely spaced. A
deeper pool of moisture will arrive Friday, with a chance of scattered
showers and thunderstorms. The best chance of a shower Friday will
come during the afternoon and evening hours, and at this time it looks
like the chance of a shower at any specific high school football game
Friday night is about one in four.

WEEKEND PEEK: A deep upper trough is forecast to develop over the
eastern third of the nation over the weekend, and this will drive
another surface cold front down our way. Looks like this front will
pass through late Saturday night, so we will maintain the chance of a
few scattered showers and storms Saturday ahead of the front with a
high in the mid to upper 80s. Then, another refreshing airmass will
drop into Alabama Sunday, with a fresh north wind and lower humidity.
Dry and pleasant weather is likely for the first couple of days of
next week, with it sure seems like we have a decent chance of reaching
the 50s again by early Monday morning.

TROPICS: A disturbance northeast of the Leeward Islands in the
Atlantic has some potential to get it's act together and become a
tropical depression during the next 36 hours. This system will follow
a path similar to Hurricane Bill last week, making the turn north, and
then northeast before reaching the coast of the U.S. if it does grow
into a tropical cyclone. Elsewhere, disturbed weather continues in the
far western Caribbean, but due to the proximity to Central America
significant development is not likely.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Hurricane Andrew was over the southern Gulf of
Mexico following a deadly visit in South Florida. Andrew makes
landfall in southern Dade County Florida on 8/24/92 near Homestead
around 5am as a Category 4 hurricane with the third lowest pressure
ever recorded in a landfalling United States Hurricane (922 mb). Only
Camille (1969) and the Labor Day Storm (1935) were stronger. South
Florida had been spared from a major hurricane for some 27 years.
Andrew ranks first in all time damage, with losses in Florida totaling
at least $25 billion. Some estimates range as high as $40 billion. The
storm had maximum winds at landfall of 145 mph with gusts to 175 mph.
The storm surge peaked at 16.9 feet in Biscayne Bay, which was a
record for South Florida. Homestead AFB was wiped off the face of the
earth. Up to 250,000 people were left at least temporarily homeless in
south Florida. 15 deaths in Florida were directly attributable to
Andrew, with another 29 as an indirect result of the storm.

...Complaint Department Closed...

THE ALABAMA STORY: It was one of those rare occasions in late August
that we did not get a single complaint about the weather. The humidity
was low enough both Saturday and Sunday to make any outdoor activity a
pleasure instead of an ordeal with perspiration and heat.

STATEWIDE COOL DOWN: When folks got up this morning, not only was it
pleasantly cool over North and Central Alabama, but it was very
comfortable all the way to the coast. Even Mobile Regional Airport had
a low of 60 and Florala 64. We posted a long list of morning lows on
the ABC 33/40 Weather BLOG. Here is a small representative sample:

52 Russellville Airport and West of Millport
53 Cottondale
54 Munford
55 Cedar Bluff, Pinson, Decatur, Dora
56 Ft. Payne, Talladega, Jasper, Moulton
57 Birmingham, Huntsville, Anniston
58 Montgomery, Clanton, Childersburg

We are still in that good weather trend for several more days,
however, a SE wind will be slowly re-establishing our humidity by late
in the week. We look for a few showers to show up on Thursday and
scattered ones on Friday. There are now indications that another
frontal boundary will be pushing toward the SE and arriving in Alabama
over the weekend resupplying our relatively cool temperatures by Monday.

AT THE BEACH: Generally good weather through Friday, although a few
showers or thunderstorms by late in the week. Highs will only be in
the upper 80s.

IN THE TROPICS: What was once Hurricane Bill is rapidly racing out of
the picture across the colder waters of the North Atlantic no longer a
hurricane or even a tropical storm. All watches and warnings have been
discontinued. It was over 200 miles NE of Cape Race, Newfoundland
rapidly moving east. Now our attention turns SE again to a
disorganized batch of showers and thunderstorms due to a tropical wave
several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands. It could develop
slowly over the next couple of days. There is a decent chance it could
eventually grow into a tropical storm.

HAY RUSTLING: Believe it or not, that is becoming a real problem in
the real drought areas of South Texas. Hay has become so scarce,
because of the drought that night raiders are hooking on to those big
round bales of hay that you see in pastures and stealing them. No sign
of the severe drought coming to an end. Austin has had 63 days this
year of highs 100 or better and San Antonio 65 days at Stinson Field.
It was 104 yesterday in San Antonio and 103 in Waco and Austin.
Hottest in the USA was 110 in Death Valley. Lowest this morning 28 at
Meacham, Oregon and 29 at Holy Cross, Alaska. It was 41 this morning
on Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My Little Miss Molly will soon be 7
years old. She has been a complete joy from the day she walked in the
door and fully bonded with me in less than 45 seconds. Our two great
grandchildren, ages 2 and 1, were here over the weekend, so Molly
spent much of her time walking all over the place to stay out of the
way or simply hiding. No ballgames during that time. So, this morning
she took the matter into her own hands (er, paws) and did one of her
famous energy bursts. She has to get rid of the pent up energy and she
will run all over the house at seemingly 40 mph and there is no way
anyone can catch her. It is a riot to watch. Life goes on and since
Little Miss Molly came on board, it sure has been a trip.

...Bye Bye Bill...

Hurricane Bill brushed past Nova Scotia and the Canadian Maritimes on
Sunday after passing about 200 miles east of Nantucket. The main
effect in Massachusetts was heavy surf. Winds gusted to 31 mph at
Nantucket. In Halifax, winds gusted to 48 mph around 4 o'clock.

The center passed over southeastern Newfoundland last night, after it
weakened to a tropical storm. Bill will quickly become extratropical
as it starts the long voyage across the Atlantic towards Europe.

ANOTHER NICE START: High pressure over southern Indiana is in charge
of Alabama's weather this morning. We are getting off to another fine
start with temperatures in the upper 50s in many spots again. Skies
are starting off mostly sunny and will become partly cloudy as we go
through the day. Highs will be in the middle 80s for the most part.
Tonight will be another comfortable night, with lows in the lower 60s.

REST OF THE WEEK: By tomorrow, the high will be pushing eastward. As
it does, our winds will become southeasterly and moisture levels will
continue to rise back toward more typical levels for August in
Alabama. Highs on Tuesday will top out near seasonable levels, around
90 degrees. By Wednesday, an upper low will develop to our west and
push eastward, weakening as it goes. This will trigger showers and
storms by Thursday and Friday. The precipitation should leave by the
weekend.

LOOKING FOR DANNY: The next Atlantic named storm will be Danny. We
may have to wait until after Labor Day to see that happen. Something
could form east of the Bahamas this week, but it doesn't look likely.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 187: Tonight's guest WeatherBrain will be Dr.
Ivor van Heerden, the former Deputy Director of the LSU Hurricane
Center and an expert on coastal Louisiana. He will talk about what
went wrong and why during Hurricane Katrina. There will also be an
extended interview with Dr. van Heerden that will be available on the
RSS and iTunes feeds late tonight. Get the latest daily news and
notes about the podcast that's all about weather by going to www.Twitter.com/WeatherBrains
. Learn about future guests and get special show information.

ON THIS DATE IN 1893: The Hurricane Season of 1893 was an especially
bad one for the United States. Only two other seasons in history have
seen six hurricanes strike the U.S. coast. Even 2005 only saw five
U.S. landfalls. On this date, a hurricane made landfall near present-
day Kennedy Airport in New York City with top winds of 90 mph. The
storm surge swamped a resort on Hog Island, completely washing it
away. Modern emergency managers fear what a similar storm would do
today. Only 25 people died in the New York hurricane, but the six
storms that year killed a total of 4000 people, making it second only
to 1900 as the deadliest in U.S. history. Just 3 days later, the Sea
Islands hurricane would strike the South Carolina coast, killing at
least 2000.Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian.

...Near Record Lows...

Building high pressure at the surface over the Midwest is giving us
some of the finest August weather you will ever see in Alabama. Some
of the refreshing morning lows included: 56F at Cullman and
Crossville; 57F at Meridianville; 58F at Bankhead National Forest,
Decatur, Fort Payne and Huntsville International; 59F at Muscle
Shoals, Anniston and Birmingham; 60F at UAH, Calera and Tuscaloosa;
61F at Albertville, Auburn and Montgomery (a record for the date); 62F
at Selma and a questionable 67F at Pinson.

FINE WEATHER TO CONTINUE: There actually is an upper t rough over
Alabama and the Deep South on this Sunday afternoon. It is
responsible for the relatively cool temperatures. A surface high
pressure system over Illinois is helping to keep our weather delightful.

The trough will hang around, but the surface high will gradually slip
eastward, giving us a return moisture flow. Temperatures will
gradually warm and humidity levels will rise, but not before we see
another unseasonably cool night tonight. Overnight readings will
again average around 58-59F, much like last night.

NEXT RAIN CHANCES: Indications are that rain chances will remain
very low through at least Wednesday, and perhaps even Thursday. For
now, we will call for isolated storms to return on Wednesday, with
widely scattered storms on Thursday. The morning run of the GFS model
is hanging its hat on a new feature, a developing upper low over the
Mississippi Valley that could increase our rain chances by late Friday
and into the weekend. We had been counting on a front to do the very
same thing. We will see.

HURRICANE BILL: Bill was barely hurricane intensity at early
afternoon and should become a tropical storm shortly. The center was
passing just offshore of the coast of Nova Scotia. Strong tropical
storm force and perhaps hurricane force winds were being felt along
the coast of Nova Scotia. Moving northeast at 35 mph, Bill will cross
eastern Newfoundland tonight with tropical storm force winds. Be on
the lookout for a potential tropical system near the Bahamas this week.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: I will do an extended WeatherBrains Extra
interview tonight with scientist Ivor van Heerden about the events
leading up to, occurring during and what has happened since Hurricane
Katrina in September 2005. Then tomorrow night, the entire panel will
examine the events with Dr. van Heerden, the former director of the
LSU Hurricane Center. Download and listen at www.weatherbrains.com or
on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Project Stormfury was armed and ready as
Hurricane Beulah moved across the Atlantic Ocean north of Puerto
Rico. An armada of planes carried out the seeding and monitored the
results of the experiment. On the 23rd, Beulah did not really meet
the criteria for seeding. On the following day, the storm met the
criteria of having a well-formed eyewall and the seeding appeared to
be successful as the eyewall disintegrated. No other hurricanes would
be seeded until 1969 because of a lack of good targets.

...Refreshing Morning...

You won't see many August mornings as beautiful as this one. A clear
sunrise, with low dew points allowing for some comfortable morning
readings. Temperatures are clustered around 60 degrees across Central
Alabama, with some of the luckier spots on the 50s side of that mark.
The readings are in spitting distance of record lows for the date,
which include 54F at Birmingham, 53F in Anniston, 55F in Tuscaloosa
and 63F in Montgomery. I think the capital city has the best shot
this morning, but records for Monday morning are a little warmer, so
everyone will have a better chance tomorrow.

GORGEOUS SUNDAY: A few light shows developed southwest and south of
Birmingham late yesterday afternoon, but they were the
only flies in the ointment of a picture perfect Saturday. Today will
feature fewer clouds and similar temperature readings, mainly in the
lower 80s. Humidity levels will be low and there will be a light
north breeze.

WHEN WILL THE RAIN RETURN: Surface high pressure will remain in
control of our weather through much of Tuesday, before southeasterly
surface winds return in earnest and increase our moisture levels
again. Look for the possibility of a few showers as early as Tuesday
night, with isolated afternoon and evening showers and storms on
Wednesday. By Thursday, rain chances will be going up as tropical
moisture increases and a disturbance moves from southeast to northwest
across the area. By Friday, a frontal system will approach from the
north, giving us a good chance of showers and storms for the end of
the week into the weekend.

HURRICANE BILL: The once major hurricane has understandably weakened
substantially and it is now about 250 miles east northeast of Cape
Cod. In the next few hours, it will graze the southeasterly part of
Nova Scotia, perhaps bringing hurricane force winds and substantial
tree damage. It will brush Cape Breton Island as well, weakening as
it gets ready to head out into the open ocean.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: Ivor van Heerden this week, followed
by Tom Skilling on September 1. John Gordon joins us on Labor Day.
Catch up on past shows at www.WeatherBrains.com, or subscribe on
iTunes. Get information about the show on Twitter @WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: The Fujiwhara Effect describes the interaction
between two low pressure systems that come within a reasonably close
distance to one another – usually about 700-900 nautical miles. The
effect is usually found in assocuation with tropical cyclones such as
hurricanes and typhoons, but it can also occur with subtropical or
extratropical low pressure systems. The Fujiwhara Dance begins when
two cyclones "link arms" and begin to rotate around a common
midpoint. The entire system, the two storms and their central point,
will move off as one as they each dance around the midpoint in a
graceful ballet. On this date, as Hurricane Iris was being pursued by
Hurricane Humberto in the Atlantic east of the Leeward Islands, the
two linked in a Fujiwhara dance. Humberto began moving to the north
and Iris started moving southward as the two pinwheeled in a beautiful
tropical dance. The dance often weakens the storms, as it did in this
case, as the newly formed Hurricane Isis weakened. The tryst was
broken up by environmental conditions that flung the two tropical
cyclones in different directions, ending the dance.
