...Rain, Storms This Morning...

A big upper trough is pushing east toward Alabama this morning. An area of showers and storms moved into the state from Mississippi during the early morning hours, accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and heavy rain. The rain and storms will continue to push east this morning. Temperatures will warm into the 60s by afternoon, despite mostly cloudy skies. There is a chance that we could see isolated thunderstorm development during the afternoon, even though the moisture will be departing by then. The drier and cooler air will be moving into the area in earnest by tonight.

COLDER START TO THE WORK WEEK: Monday will be partly cloudy and colder, with highs struggling to reach the lower 50s along with a brisk northwest wind. Expect a light freeze Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Tuesday and Wednesday should feature mostly sunny conditions.

LATE WEEK SYSTEM: By Wednesday, a surface low will be forming over Southeast Texas. This low will track east northeastward along the Gulf coast, winding up in South Alabama by Thursday night. As it does, rain will spread back into Alabama overnight. There is concern that there could be enough cold air in the lower levels of the atmosphere to produce freezing rain over Northwest sections late Thursday evening, with the freezing line sliding southeast overnight. By no means a forecast at this time, but something to watch. It looks like some really cold air will spread into the state for the weekend.

IN THE NEWS: Oklahoma lawmaker Pat Owenby has introduced a bill that would require mobile home park owners to develop shelter and/or evacuation plans for residents. Eight people were killed when a tornado tore through a mobile home park in Lone Grove, near Ardmore, last February. We are entering our prime severe weather season here in Alabama and many of our friends live in mobile homes. It is a great time to think ahead and have a plan of where to go and what to do well ahead of the storm. Is there a nearby shelter. Do you have friends with a basement or storm shelter? Having a plan now means less reaction time when a storm is bearing down.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week, famed severe weather research and radar expert Les Lemon will share his insight and knowledge. He has a passion for severe weather plans at large venues. Who keeps you safely informed about severe weather when you are at a football games, basketball tournament or concert? Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains. Subscribe on iTunes or listen at www.WeatherBrains.com.

ONE YEAR AGO: A powerful storm struck France and Spain with winds over 100 mph. Named Klaus, the winter storm killed 26 people, including four children who died when winds caused a sports center to collapse in Barcelona. Power was out to over 150,000 people in Spain. Rail service between the two countries was disrupted. The minimum pressure in the storm bottomed out at 967 mb. Winds gusted to 124 mph in Spain. It was the worst since Winter Storm Martin in 1999. ...Wedge Makes For Cloudy, Cool Saturday...

The dreaded easterly wedge is wreaking havoc with temperature forecasts across Central Alabama on this late January Saturday. The wedge is a cold and generally moist airmass that seeps down the eastern side of the Appalachian Mountains and makes the turn into Georgia and Alabama. Today, it is accompanied by a rather thick deck of stratus clouds that is keeping temperatures in the 40s and 50s. This is a far cry from the mid to upper 60s that we expected today with a good dose of sunshine. The wedge may make you don a jacket this afternoon, but we will probably be thankful for it tonight.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT OVERNIGHT? A line of storms will enter western Alabama after midnight tonight and progress across the state through the overnight hours as a storm system moves into the Great Lakes. It should get windier as we go through the afternoon and evening hours wit southerly winds averaging 10-20 mph and occasionally gusting to 30 mph or higher. With strong wind fields in place, there is a slight chance that there could be isolated wind damage reports with the line. But lower instabilities means diminished chances of severe weather. Still, monitor later forecasts and have your reliable source for weather information on alert through the overnight hours, because, as we always say with thunderstorms, expect the unexpected.

SUNDAY: Showers and storms should be east of I-65 by Sunday morning. Skies should remain mostly cloudy and there could be a few showers through the rest of the day. With milder air, highs on Sunday may make the 60s. Things will begin to change Sunday night, as colder air starts to invade the state. Highs on Monday and Tuesday will likely be stuck in the 40s. Expect lows below freezing Tuesday and Wednesday. Another storm system should bring rain back to Alabama Thursday night, with more cold for Friday.

WEST COAST GETTING A BREAK: After a stormy week, the West is getting a bit of a break. This week's rains were beneficial to central California. Areas around San Francisco and San Jose are now at 100-125% of normal for this rainy season, which they are halfway through according to Jan Null from Golden Gate Weather. They need to continue to have heavlthy rainfall totalas to keep making a dent in the major drought they have been in for three years. Good luck!

STORM ALERT TOUR: The first stop will be this Thursday night at Winfield. The 33/40 weather crew will be there with some very interesting weather stories and training material, as well as some prizes. It begins at 7:00, so get their early to get a good seat.

WEATHERBRAINS: Les Lemon will be the Guest WeatherBrain this week. He is famous for the Lemon Technique, a method of identifying severe thunderstorms. He was also instrumental in the development of the NEXRAD Doppler Radar network. Follow the show on Twitter @weatherbrains. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1971: Prospect Creek Camp in the Endicott Mountains of northern Alaska recorded the coldest temperature ever recorded in the U.S. with -79.8 degrees F (rounded off to -80 degrees F.) There have been colder unofficial readings, but this is the official reading. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter.com @ wxhistorian.

...Changes...

More changes are in store for Alabama as our topsy-turvy weather patterns continue across Central Alabama. Today will feel like spring, with a round of rain and storms tonight, followed by a change to colder weather for next week.

BECOMING BREEZY TODAY: Low pressure will form over the Texas Panhandle this morning and move northeastward. As it does, southeasterly winds will increase over Alabama, averaging 15-20 mph by afternoon. The breezy winds will continue overnight.

STORMS TONIGHT/SUNDAY MORNING: Late tonight, an area of showers and storms will push through the state. They will arrive at the best time of the day, (translation: lowest instability), so the chance of any severe weather will be minimal. Some of the storms could be on the strong side however, with gusty winds and hail. As always with thunderstorms, we say expect the unexpected, so pay attention to weather information through the night. The storms should be east of I-65 by Sunday morning and end during the day. Sunday's highs will be about like today's with readings in the middle 60s. Rainfall totals should average one to two inches.

CHANGE TO COLDER: Monday will feature highs in the upper 40s with a mostly cloudy sky and a chilly northwest wind. Tuesday likely won't get out of the 40s either. Expect a freeze Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

IMPRESSIVE CALIFORNIA PRESSURES: The intense low pressure system that moved ashore in Central California on Thursday produced some record setting barometer readings over Nevada and California. Reno established an all time record low on Friday with 28.91 inches. The reading of 29.07 inches at Los Angeles on Thursday was an all time record. Other all time records included 28.94 at Fresno and Bakersfield, 29.15 at San Diego and 28.90 inches at Eureka.

WEATHERWISE MAGAZINE COLLECTION: I am looking to buy some old issues of Weatherwise magazine that are absent from my collection. A list of what I need is on the blog at http://www.alabamawx.com/?p=26232 if you are interested in selling any old copies you
might have.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week, legendary radar expert Les Lemon is the Guest WeatherBrain. Les was instrumental in the development of Doppler radar. He was also a huge part of the development of the NEXRAD network radar system. The ebullient Betsy Kling from WKYC in Cleveland will be the guest panelist. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: The Blizzard of 2005 dumped one to two feet of snow from New York City to Boston. In Beantown, the storm rivaled the city's epic 1978 Blizzard. The snowfall total of 22.5 inches was second only to the 1978 total of 27.1 inches. Add in winds gusting to 60 mph, five foot snow drifts, huge waves and coastal flooding, and it was a storm to remember. Nantucket was blasted by hurricane force winds. 13.8 inches of snow fell in New York City. Get a daily dose of weather history by following me on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Weekend Showers/Storms...

COLDER EARLY NEXT WEEK: January continues to act changeable like it has much of the month, so we will go through quite a change in temperature the next few days and from dry to wet and back to dry. We think the sequence of events will unfold like this: Mostly cloudy and cool tonight with low in the 40s, warmer tomorrow with mid 60s and windy at times. We think the showers and thunderstorms will arrive Saturday night. New evidence indicates it could be late Saturday night and showers and storms should continue rather numerous Sunday, especially during the morning. It may be late in the day and even at some point Sunday night before all of the showers get away. Monday should be a lot cooler with morning lows in the upper 30s and afternoon highs in the 40s. We may be dealing with a freeze Tuesday morning with lows in the upper 20s and highs only around 50.

A warm front moving NE out of the Gulf of Mexico will bring our increasing moisture Saturday. By early Sunday, most of the state should be in the warm sector, but a cool front will be approaching from the west. A second cold front further behind will bring the more chilly temperatures Monday and Tuesday. Monday looks windy, but drier and a lot cooler. Clouds may be slow to break up, but it looks like mostly sunshine Tuesday.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Only six days until the kick off of the 2010 Storm Alert tour. The first stop will be next Thursday night at Winfield. The 33/40 weather crew will be there with some very interesting weather stories and training material, as well as some prizes. It begins at 7:00, so get their early to get a good seat.

AROUND THE GOOD OLD USA: Unfortunately, there is some terrible weather in the west as a series of major storms continues to move inland from the Pacific Ocean. However, they are now experiencing the last storm in this series. So pronounced are these low-pressure centers that the pressure dropped to an all-time low of 28.94 inches at Salt Lake City Airport overnight. In the last 24 hours, wind gusts have peaked at over 90 mph at the peak of Ogden Mountain. Would you believe that the NWS in Tucson had to issue a Blizzard Warning for parts of Southern Arizona? In North Greenlee County, 25 to 40 inches of snow is expected; in Graham County, 20 to 30 inches and they may get an additional 6 to 10 inches tonight. At Donner Peak in the Sierra-Nevada range, 94 inches has accumulated from this storm. Elsewhere: the warmest in the nation yesterday was 85 at Edinburg, Texas; cold spot this morning included 12 below zero at Berlin, New Hampshire and 40 below at Atqasuk, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had been sleeping real late. This morning she changed her mind. She was pounding the side of the bed of the majority owner before daylight wanting to go out. I was already up and was on my second sip of coffee. The coffee got cold, so away we went. Another longer walk at midday. She stopped at both houses of Dino and little Bo hoping to see them. The grandfather of Dino will be by this afternoon. He is real good about looking for Molly when he comes by, taking the leash off of Dino and letting them run wild in our backyard. Only thing, I cannot take the leash off Molly because she might head for Canada. I have never seen a little dog run as fast as Dino and he often runs in a huge figure eight sweeping by Molly every time he comes by. Life goes on.

...More Rain Over The Weekend...

DRY TODAY: Alabama will be in-between weather systems today, so no rain is expected, and temperatures will peak around 60 degrees in most spots with a partly sunny sky. But, we remain under a very active southern branch of the jet stream, and we will have more rain to deal with over the weekend.

TOMORROW AND SUNDAY: The daytime hours tomorrow look dry, with a mix of sun and clouds and a high in the low to mid 60s. South winds will increase, gusting to 25 mph at times by late afternoon. Showers and storms will move into the state late tomorrow night, and at this time it looks like our main 12 hour window for rain will be from about 12:00 midnight through 12:00 noon on Sunday. We are projecting rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches, with potential for up to 3 inches in isolated spots. We will have to be on the lookout for flooding problems since the ground has become saturated after the rain over the past 36 hours.

With the storms coming in during the late night and early morning hours, it seems that instability values will be very marginal for a big severe weather problem; the greatest risk of severe weather over the weekend should come over the southern quarter of the state. The rain will exit the state Sunday afternoon.

COLDER EARLY NEXT WEEK: Monday will be sharply colder, with temperatures hovering in the 40s all day with a chilly north wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing both Tuesday and Wednesday morning, with lows mostly in the upper 20s. Then, our next chance of rain will come toward the end of next week, one week from today.

HUNTSVILLE TORNADO: A tornado passed over east Huntsville late yesterday afternoon, downing power lines and trees, destroying a home in Five Points and throwing a truck through a house on Oakwood Avenue. Six total injuries were reported in connection with the tornado, but none are life-threatening. Two people were injured on Maysville Road when their truck was hit by a tree, and another was injured on Maysville Road when a tree hit a house. At one point about 10,000 people were without power over Madison County. ABC 33/40 showed the tornado live at the end of our 5:00 News last night with the Huntsville SKYCAM.

Another tornado warning was issued at 6:30 for parts of Clay, Cleburne, and Randolph Counties in East Alabama, but we did not hear any reports of damage.

ROAMING: Last night Governor Jan Brewer signed a Declaration of Emergency in response to the heavy rain and snow that has been hammering Arizona through the week. In neighboring California, Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency for five counties, including San Francisco. The weather will improve out west this weekend.

...An Active January...

FRONTS AND STORMS: There is never a dull moment in this January for Alabama and that is very much the story in almost every corner of the good old USA. I do not remember seeing so many significant weather problems over such a wide area as we have had so far this month. If you have been watching the news at all, you are aware of some incredible storms on the west coast.

Alabama gets the brunt of those several days after moving ashore in the west. There is almost a parade of storms across the Central and Southern USA.

Last night was no exception. We were under a tornado watch for 31 west and south Alabama counties after midnight. Fortunately, I do not believe that we had an actual touchdown with damage reported. Strong winds and heavy rain made up for the rest of our night. The heaviest rain was down south. Here are just a few examples:

4.46 Evergreen

5.94 Mobile Regional Airport

3.97 Brookley Field Mobile

3.57 Troy

1.04 Roebuck

1.28 Tuscaloosa

1.03 Shelby County Airport

This afternoon the Storm Prediction Center posted a Tornado Watch until 5:00 p.m. which included the NW corner of Alabama. Only Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale Counties were included.

A series of changes ahead over the next few days. We believe Friday will give us a break from the rain and storms and also a decent amount of sunshine. By Saturday, it is back to the old routine. A few afternoon thunderstorms will increase in number Saturday night and a few of those could become severe. For Sunday, it will be rather windy with a chance of thunderstorms, mostly during the morning, and then turning colder Sunday night. Monday will feature morning lows in the upper 30s and highs only in the 40s with a brisk NW wind.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: It would take a short book to fully report everything that is going on. A check of the snow survey this morning shows that 43% of the lower 48 has a snow cover as compared to 52% a month ago today. However, the snow cover is becoming deeper and deeper in the west. In the last 24 hours, more than 2 feet of snow in the higher elevations of the Sierra-Nevada range, 1 foot of new snow from SW Colorado into North/Central New Mexico. The warm spot yesterday was along the Rio Grande where McAllen, Texas enjoyed 87. Coldest this morning, 5 below at Doe Lake, Michigan and 33 below at Deadhorse, Alaska where the wind chill was 51 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was up all night working weather. The majority owner also had a restless night. Little Miss Molly sure did. She hid under the bed for much of the night. She not only can hear thunder from miles away, but she has trained herself to know that heavy rain means that thunder will follow. So when it starts pouring rain, she goes ahead and finds a safe spot. She got to play some more with little Bo this morning. She now has two adorable boyfriends along the walking track—Bo and Dino. Life goes on—at times, not near enough sleep.

...Severe Storms Later Today?...

UNSTABLE DAY: We have a pretty interesting forecast package today with several possibilities on the table. First off, the overnight round of rain and storms will end early this morning, with most of that rain moving well to the east of Alabama by mid-morning. There is a reasonable chance the sun will break out during the midday hours, pushing the temperature into the 67 to 70 degree range, which will contribute in making the air over North Alabama very unstable this afternoon. Then, a strong disturbance aloft will approach, and bring the possibility of additional storms firing up this afternoon, especially north of I-20. The moisture will be rather limited this afternoon, so the storms will be scattered in nature, and some spots will not see any additional rain. However, where the storms do develop, they will have the potential to become strong to severe, and the Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk (their standard risk) of severe weather across the northern third of Alabama this afternoon. While the main threat will come from hail and strong winds, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, so we will be watching the radar closely this afternoon.

The rain will move out of Alabama this evening, and tomorrow promises to be a nice mid-winter day, with a decent amount of sunshine through scattered clouds and a high in the low 60s.

MORE RAIN OVER THE WEEKEND: We will begin the weekend with a mild and breezy day Saturday along with a mix of sun and clouds. But, the next batch of rain and storms will move into our state late Saturday night. It looks like the main window for rain and storms will come from about 10:00 Saturday night through 10:00 a.m. Sunday. SPC maintains a severe weather risk for the southern two-thirds of Alabama for this event, and the rain could be heavy at times. Looks like most places will see 1 to 2 inches of rain, with potential for isolated amounts over two inches. The rain should taper off by midday Sunday, and drier and colder air settling in here Sunday night. The weather looks dry and chilly for Monday and Tuesday, with sub-freezing temperatures likely by Tuesday morning.

TEXAS TWISTERS: Yesterday brought the first severe weather outbreak of the new year; at least four tornadoes touched down over East Texas, with significant damage reported in Canton, Waskom, and Sulphur Springs. Severe thunderstorms and a few tornadoes also moved through parts of North Louisiana as well.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Severe cold was the story over the eastern third of the nation. Birmingham's low that morning was 6 degrees below zero. Jacksonville, FL recorded its all-time record low of 7 degrees. It was the coldest Inauguration day in history as President Reagan is sworn in for a second term during cold and wind that resulted in wind chill readings of 30 degrees below zero. Many counties in New York were declared disaster areas, because of heavy snow.

...The Weather Keeps Us Hopping...

THE WEATHER KEEPS US HOPPING: A busy time in the old weather office. It is going to be that way off and on through the weekend as we watch for periods of showers and thunderstorms that will bring us some heavy rain and some storms that could become severe. Here is the way we think events will unfold: The atmosphere will become more unstable later this afternoon and tonight. We should get a good dose of showers and thunderstorms during that time. Some of those will produce locally heavy rain and a few of the storms could be strong and possibly even severe. Those thunderstorms will still be in progress Thursday morning, but they should quieten down and thin out by midday. Still a few morning storms could be strong to severe.

A break from the storms Friday and Saturday, although it is possible that a new family of storms will move into our area late Saturday night. However, we expect most of those to occur on Sunday. Those storms will be numerous at times, some may be strong to severe and we will have some more heavy rain. The wind on Sunday will be rather strong averaging 15 to 30 mph out of the SW even with no thunderstorms involved. Finally, a break in the storms again Monday and Tuesday and it will be turning cooler but not cold. The low by Monday morning should be near 40 and by Tuesday morning in the mid 30s.

HOW MUCH RAIN: We think across Central Alabama we could get up to 1.50 inches tonight and Thursday morning. At the end of the line on Sunday, another 1.50 inches is possible, so we could receive about 3 inches from this series of storms.

WHAT IS CAUSING THIS: A series of storms coming ashore on the west coast and tracking eastward across the Central and Southern USA. One of those lows will be centered over Arkansas tomorrow morning and others will follow. These storms have played havoc in the far west.

PROWLING NORTH AMERICA: The current weather pattern does not favour any huge invasion of arctic air into the Deep South anytime soon. It is cold in parts of Alaska, but it could be a whole lot colder at this time in January. The warmest temperature in the good old USA yesterday was 86 at Laredo, Texas. Coldest this morning was 7 below at Raco, Michigan. In Alaska, it was 44 below at Deadhorse. The Far West has really caught it with this weather. Very heavy rain, mudslides, heavy snow in the high country and even a few tornadoes. Probably one of the more serious situations was in Yosemite National Park, especially in the higher elevations, where 18 inches of snow was expected today, an additional 20 inches tonight, 10 more inches Thursday and 12 inches Thursday night. In the higher elevations of the park, wind gusts as high as 75 mph expected.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: On a long walk with Miss Molly this morning. She is the boss on the first walk of the day and I believe she reversed direction, turned left, turned right, stopped and sniffed 40 or 50 times. She enjoys her outings so much that she would stay out for hours, I believe, except when it is raining or very cold or she hears a strange noise. Any of those make her do a 180 and head for home. Life goes on.....

...Wet/Storm Weather Returns To Alabama...

BIG SOAKING AHEAD: We will begin this day with a 2.74" rain deficit for 2010 for Birmingham, but a large chunk of that will be knocked out during the next 36 hours as a vigorous storm system impacts Alabama. Look for periods of rain today as a warm front moves northward, but the heaviest rain will come tonight when thunderstorms could be involved. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a slight risk (their standard risk) of severe weather for parts of West and Southwest Alabama tonight, generally for areas from Tuscaloosa to Mobile. The instability values will be rather marginal for severe storms, but a few reports of hail and strong winds will be possible. In addition, the rain will be heavy at times tonight with some localized flooding problems possible. No major flooding issues are expected, however, since the ground is certainly not saturated and it can take lots of water. Rain amounts of two inches are likely.

TOMORROW: This will be an interesting day; the initial batch of rain and storms will end tomorrow morning, and we could see a few peeks of midday sunshine, which will push temperatures toward the 70 degree mark. This, in turn, will make the air rather unstable, and one more round of storms is possible late tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow evening. If those storms do indeed form, they could be strong to severe. All of the storms should be out of the state by midnight tomorrow night.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: These days will be dry and mild with highs in the 60s. Clouds and south winds will increase Saturday in advance of the next storm system in the very active southern branch of the jet stream.

STORMY SUNDAY: Another round of rain and storms will invade Alabama late in the weekend on Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of Alabama in a severe weather risk, and the rain could be heavy at times. We will be more details about this system once our mid-week storm is out of here. At first glance it looks like 1 to 2 inches of rain are likely statewide Sunday.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Dry and cooler weather is likely for the first couple of days of next week; the next storm system is due in here toward the end of the week with yet another chance of heavy rain and possibly strong storms. And, long range guidance continues to hint at Arctic air moving back down into the continental U.S. in early February. Too early to determine just how cold, and how much of that air will reach Alabama and the Deep South. Winter is far from over, you know.

IT DOES RAIN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: A powerful storm that hit the Southern California coast yesterday afternoon caused at least one tornado, four waterspouts and winds of up to 90 mph. Long Beach, Seal Beach, San Pedro and Huntington Beach were hit hardest by the fast-moving storm, which flooded streets, damaged homes, produced hail and ice and stranded cars on the 710 Freeway. Witnesses reported seeing a tornado touch down in Sunset Beach and lift boats out of the water as it came onshore.

...Weather Will Get Stormy...

THE WEATHER MARCHES ON: This is an active time of year for weather in Alabama. It is supposed to be that way. It does not stay sluggish very long. What a difference a few days makes. From being iced down last week, temperatures this afternoon were soaring into the 60s over much of the state. That will be the story on the old overworked thermometer all the way into the weekend, including Saturday and Sunday. Nights will be comfortable, mostly in the upper 40s and even some 50s.

NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: We have a series of significant storms moving ashore on the west coast and getting caught up in the southern latitude jet stream. Timing could be a puzzle for some of our weather over the next few days, but we think it will unfold like this.

Showers on Wednesday will increase by afternoon. They will become widespread Wednesday night. By that time we will be hearing thunder. The showers and storms will persist the rest of Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, then diminish later. Friday should be dry as well as most of Saturday. But our second batch of showers and storms will arrive Saturday night and hang around through much of Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has West Central and part of South Alabama under a Slight Risk of a few severe storms later Wednesday and Wednesday night. At some point Saturday night, we may have another threat. We will watch that closely.

HOW MUCH RAIN: We have accumulated a deficiency this month of 2.56 inches, but that is insignificant because we finished 2009 with a huge surplus. We could get 2 inches or more from these two storms.

ROAMING THE NORTH AMERICAN LANDSCAPE: Vicious storms on the west coast...almost a state wide heavy rain in California...significant flash flooding already underway and mudslides will be a significant problem...the NWS in Tucson has a Winter Storm Warning for parts of Southern Arizona above 6,500 feet. They may get 12 to 20 inches of new snow and there is a possibility of blizzard conditions...the Southern California mountains will get 4 to 8 inches of additional snow from this storm and an additional 2 to 4 feet from another storm by the middle of next week. Cold spots this morning: 2 below zero at Diamond Lake, Wisconsin (I do not ever remember seeing that location take the prize)...in Alaska, it was 45 below at Selawik...good old Deadhorse had minus 43 with a wind chill of -60.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly only weighs 8 pounds, but she uses all that weight to make us happy. She is like a little psychologist. Fortunately we do not ever need a real psychologist, but even if we did, we could go talk to Little Miss Molly. When we do that, she turns her head and looks us right in the eye like she fully understands every word we are saying. Sure did catch up on some ballgames with her yesterday. She does not ask much at all—just for a few bathroom breaks each day, a couple of ballgames and a treat after each walk. She also likes to play keep away. I can tell her, I am going to get you Molly, and she will take off running all the way around the house. Life goes on.

...Clouds on the Increase...

WEATHER CHANGES AHEAD: A very active southern storm track has become established across the nation, which is what you expect during an El Nino cycle, and that promises to bring some active weather to Alabama and the Deep South and the days ahead. Clouds will slowly increase today, and temperatures will remain very pleasant with a high in the mid 60s for most places.

WET WEATHER RETURNS: A few showers are likely tomorrow as a deep layer of moisture moves northward across Alabama, but the heaviest rain should move into the state late tomorrow night, when a few thunderstorms will be involved as well. The Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk for the far southwest part of our state (mainly Mobile and Baldwin Counties), and we are not expecting a major severe weather problem up this way due to the lack of surface based instability. The rain will end Thursday morning.

We should note that the sun could pop out during the midday hours Thursday, and if this happens the air will become rather unstable. Should any additional storms fire up Thursday afternoon, they could pack a punch. We are projecting rain totals in the 1 to 2 inch range tomorrow and Thursday.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Friday looks like a dry and pleasant day with a high in the 60s and a good supply of sunshine, but the weather changes again over the weekend. For now we will maintain a dry forecast on Saturday, but the day will be breezy with clouds on the increase. Then, a rather vigorous system will bring another round of rain and thunderstorms to Alabama Sunday. SPC has placed the southern two-thirds of Alabama under a severe weather risk on Sunday with excellent dynamics and some instability. This could be our first severe weather threat of the year; we will have a much better idea about the specifics of this system after the mid-week storm system moves on to the east. And, it looks like the Sunday event could bring another 1 to 2 inches of rain. Cooler and drier air will follow by Monday.

MESS OUT WEST: A parade of Pacific storm systems will bring the threat of widespread flooding and extremely heavy mountain snow to parts of South California, Arizona, and Nevada in coming days. Snow totals across high terrain in many cases will exceed two feet by Friday, and rain amounts of 6 to 12 inches are likely in the area from Los Angeles to Phoenix. In California, officials feared mudslides could threaten a number of foothill areas along the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles. The evacuation of 64 homes in his area were ordered yesterday afternoon.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: A tornado moved northeast through the city of Cullman leaving a path of destruction 10 miles long and averaging 1/4 mile wide. A total of 35 people were injured; at the Wal-Mart distribution center 50 to 75 tractor-trailer rigs were tossed like fallen dominoes.

...Shutting Off The Cold Air...

TWO BOUTS WITH SOME STORMS: Our weather discussion today is a mix of good news and not such good news, but no really bad news. Probably the most encouraging side of the story is a closing of the valve to the arctic far north. We should go all week without any sharp invasions of cold air. There are good indications that we will have fairly friendly temperatures for the next 7 or 8 days. My guess is that this will cause dancing in the streets, because that was a long siege that we suffered through.

TURNING STORMY: We are going to have two bouts of stormy weather over the next few days. We cannot totally rule out a slight chance of a few severe thunderstorms inviting their way into the mix. Our first rain event will start as the day goes on Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms will then get more numerous Wednesday night with some locally heavy rain. We speculate that here in Central Alabama we should get about 1.50 inches of rain Wednesday and Wednesday night with an additional1/4 inch as the showers diminish Thursday. Our next batch of showers and storms will be a weekend event. They should start Saturday night and continue mostly Sunday with another chance of some strong storms. We believe that most of the stronger ones will be to the south.

FIRST HALF OF JANUARY: Weather records at Birmingham date all the way back to the mid 1880s. The NWS says that the first 15 days of this January were the coldest on record. The average temperature for those 15 days was only 29.7 degrees. The next coldest was 32.0 in 1918.

LOS ANGELES: Some amazing weather is unfolding in the Western USA. Some computer projections hint as much as 8.78 inches of rain for Central California from today through Saturday and as much as 11 inches in the mountains of Southern California. In the mountains of Northern Arizona, especially the Flagstaff area and the White Mountains, persistent snow over the next several days will be heavy. The storminess will not be limited to those two cities. In Southern California, we may hear of some extremely dangerous mudslides.

ROAMING: The warmest in the entire USA yesterday was 83 at Miami and Vero Beach...coldest this morning was 4 below zero at Kremmling, Colorado and 45 below at Ambler and Selawik, Alaska...the wind chill in good old Deadhorse was 59 below...Alaska temperatures have moderated some over the last several days...winter in Alabama is only half over and there is more than enough time for bitter cold arctic air to build up over the Far North and head for us.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure am enjoying my daily walks with my 8-pound dynamo, sometimes known as Little Miss Molly. Mother Nature is so good to us. I love the stark winter landscape right behind my favourite season of autumn. Little Miss Molly evolves with different habits. For years she completely ignored birds, even those walking nearby on the track. Now she chases every one she sees even looking straight up into some of the trees while she is going full speed ahead. She had a great play session today with Bo, the tiny little new Maltese on the block. That little puppy kept Molly busy. He was not the least bit afraid of her and Molly would not harm a flea and life goes on.

...Dry, Mild For A Couple of Days...

This weekend looked like January. It felt like January. Temperatures in the 50s with lots of clouds and light rain. Now things will feel a little nicer for a couple of days as a high pressure ridge builds briefly over Alabama and the Deep South. Temperatures back in the 60s will feel like Spring after the coldest first 15 days of January ever recorded in Central Alabama.

RECORD COLD: It has been the coldest first half of January in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Anniston. With the January thaw we are now experiencing, it will be interesting to see where the month shapes up in the pantheon of coldest Januaries ever across the area. It certainly will rank very high on the list.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: Weak high pressure is building over the Deep South on this holiday Monday. Temperatures will warm to around 60 degrees today with a good bit of sunshine. More of the same for tomorrow, with temperatures running even a few degrees above today.

MIDWEEK SYSTEM: By Tuesday night, a surface low will be forming east of the Rockies. This low will be our next weathermaker, spreading clouds and showers back into the state on Wednesday. In fact, showers could develop Wednesday morning as a warm front moves north. But the main activity will come Wednesday night into Thursday morning as the low moves just to our north.

BRIEF BREAK: Skies will clear Thursday afternoon and Friday should be a decent transition day with a good supply of sunshine and temperatures in the lower 60s. But change will already be on the horizon again as a more powerful storm system takes shape to the west of Alabama.

WEEKEND SYSTEM: Our winds will turn to southeasterly and increase on Saturday as the next surface low moves out onto the Plains. Clouds will increase once again, and an area of showers and storms will move into the state Saturday night. Sunday will feature brief clearing, although clouds will build back in as the big upper low passes to the north. High pressure will build in for the next week, but another strong storm system will follow before the end of the month.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, we talk about the danger of icy roads with storm chaser and photographer Dan Robinson. The panel will be augmented by Corey Anne Walton from the National Hurricane Center. Keep up with the goings on behind the scenes at the show by following us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Tropical Cyclone Hyacinthe produced 223.5 inches of rainfall over the 10 day period from January 18-27 at Commerson, La Reunion Island to set the worldwide mark for rainfall from a tropical cyclone during that time interval. The same storm dumped 127.6 inches of rain in just 72 hours at Grand-Ilet, La Reunion Island. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.
