...The Weather Keeps Us Hopping...

THE WEATHER KEEPS US HOPPING: A busy time in the old weather office. It is going to be that way off and on through the weekend as we watch for periods of showers and thunderstorms that will bring us some heavy rain and some storms that could become severe. Here is the way we think events will unfold: The atmosphere will become more unstable later this afternoon and tonight. We should get a good dose of showers and thunderstorms during that time. Some of those will produce locally heavy rain and a few of the storms could be strong and possibly even severe. Those thunderstorms will still be in progress Thursday morning, but they should quieten down and thin out by midday. Still a few morning storms could be strong to severe.

A break from the storms Friday and Saturday, although it is possible that a new family of storms will move into our area late Saturday night. However, we expect most of those to occur on Sunday. Those storms will be numerous at times, some may be strong to severe and we will have some more heavy rain. The wind on Sunday will be rather strong averaging 15 to 30 mph out of the SW even with no thunderstorms involved. Finally, a break in the storms again Monday and Tuesday and it will be turning cooler but not cold. The low by Monday morning should be near 40 and by Tuesday morning in the mid 30s.

HOW MUCH RAIN: We think across Central Alabama we could get up to 1.50 inches tonight and Thursday morning. At the end of the line on Sunday, another 1.50 inches is possible, so we could receive about 3 inches from this series of storms.

WHAT IS CAUSING THIS: A series of storms coming ashore on the west coast and tracking eastward across the Central and Southern USA. One of those lows will be centered over Arkansas tomorrow morning and others will follow. These storms have played havoc in the far west.

PROWLING NORTH AMERICA: The current weather pattern does not favour any huge invasion of arctic air into the Deep South anytime soon. It is cold in parts of Alaska, but it could be a whole lot colder at this time in January. The warmest temperature in the good old USA yesterday was 86 at Laredo, Texas. Coldest this morning was 7 below at Raco, Michigan. In Alaska, it was 44 below at Deadhorse. The Far West has really caught it with this weather. Very heavy rain, mudslides, heavy snow in the high country and even a few tornadoes. Probably one of the more serious situations was in Yosemite National Park, especially in the higher elevations, where 18 inches of snow was expected today, an additional 20 inches tonight, 10 more inches Thursday and 12 inches Thursday night. In the higher elevations of the park, wind gusts as high as 75 mph expected.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: On a long walk with Miss Molly this morning. She is the boss on the first walk of the day and I believe she reversed direction, turned left, turned right, stopped and sniffed 40 or 50 times. She enjoys her outings so much that she would stay out for hours, I believe, except when it is raining or very cold or she hears a strange noise. Any of those make her do a 180 and head for home. Life goes on.....
