...Shutting Off The Cold Air...
TWO BOUTS WITH SOME STORMS: Our weather discussion today is a mix of good news and not such good news, but no really bad news. Probably the most encouraging side of the story is a closing of the valve to the arctic far north. We should go all week without any sharp invasions of cold air. There are good indications that we will have fairly friendly temperatures for the next 7 or 8 days. My guess is that this will cause dancing in the streets, because that was a long siege that we suffered through.
TURNING STORMY: We are going to have two bouts of stormy weather over the next few days. We cannot totally rule out a slight chance of a few severe thunderstorms inviting their way into the mix. Our first rain event will start as the day goes on Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms will then get more numerous Wednesday night with some locally heavy rain. We speculate that here in Central Alabama we should get about 1.50 inches of rain Wednesday and Wednesday night with an additional1/4 inch as the showers diminish Thursday. Our next batch of showers and storms will be a weekend event. They should start Saturday night and continue mostly Sunday with another chance of some strong storms. We believe that most of the stronger ones will be to the south.
FIRST HALF OF JANUARY: Weather records at Birmingham date all the way back to the mid 1880s. The NWS says that the first 15 days of this January were the coldest on record. The average temperature for those 15 days was only 29.7 degrees. The next coldest was 32.0 in 1918.
LOS ANGELES: Some amazing weather is unfolding in the Western USA. Some computer projections hint as much as 8.78 inches of rain for Central California from today through Saturday and as much as 11 inches in the mountains of Southern California. In the mountains of Northern Arizona, especially the Flagstaff area and the White Mountains, persistent snow over the next several days will be heavy. The storminess will not be limited to those two cities. In Southern California, we may hear of some extremely dangerous mudslides.
ROAMING: The warmest in the entire USA yesterday was 83 at Miami and Vero Beach...coldest this morning was 4 below zero at Kremmling, Colorado and 45 below at Ambler and Selawik, Alaska...the wind chill in good old Deadhorse was 59 below...Alaska temperatures have moderated some over the last several days...winter in Alabama is only half over and there is more than enough time for bitter cold arctic air to build up over the Far North and head for us.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure am enjoying my daily walks with my 8-pound dynamo, sometimes known as Little Miss Molly. Mother Nature is so good to us. I love the stark winter landscape right behind my favourite season of autumn. Little Miss Molly evolves with different habits. For years she completely ignored birds, even those walking nearby on the track. Now she chases every one she sees even looking straight up into some of the trees while she is going full speed ahead. She had a great play session today with Bo, the tiny little new Maltese on the block. That little puppy kept Molly busy. He was not the least bit afraid of her and Molly would not harm a flea and life goes on.
