...Changes...

More changes are in store for Alabama as our topsy-turvy weather patterns continue across Central Alabama. Today will feel like spring, with a round of rain and storms tonight, followed by a change to colder weather for next week.

BECOMING BREEZY TODAY: Low pressure will form over the Texas Panhandle this morning and move northeastward. As it does, southeasterly winds will increase over Alabama, averaging 15-20 mph by afternoon. The breezy winds will continue overnight.

STORMS TONIGHT/SUNDAY MORNING: Late tonight, an area of showers and storms will push through the state. They will arrive at the best time of the day, (translation: lowest instability), so the chance of any severe weather will be minimal. Some of the storms could be on the strong side however, with gusty winds and hail. As always with thunderstorms, we say expect the unexpected, so pay attention to weather information through the night. The storms should be east of I-65 by Sunday morning and end during the day. Sunday's highs will be about like today's with readings in the middle 60s. Rainfall totals should average one to two inches.

CHANGE TO COLDER: Monday will feature highs in the upper 40s with a mostly cloudy sky and a chilly northwest wind. Tuesday likely won't get out of the 40s either. Expect a freeze Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

IMPRESSIVE CALIFORNIA PRESSURES: The intense low pressure system that moved ashore in Central California on Thursday produced some record setting barometer readings over Nevada and California. Reno established an all time record low on Friday with 28.91 inches. The reading of 29.07 inches at Los Angeles on Thursday was an all time record. Other all time records included 28.94 at Fresno and Bakersfield, 29.15 at San Diego and 28.90 inches at Eureka.

WEATHERWISE MAGAZINE COLLECTION: I am looking to buy some old issues of Weatherwise magazine that are absent from my collection. A list of what I need is on the blog at http://www.alabamawx.com/?p=26232 if you are interested in selling any old copies you
might have.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week, legendary radar expert Les Lemon is the Guest WeatherBrain. Les was instrumental in the development of Doppler radar. He was also a huge part of the development of the NEXRAD network radar system. The ebullient Betsy Kling from WKYC in Cleveland will be the guest panelist. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: The Blizzard of 2005 dumped one to two feet of snow from New York City to Boston. In Beantown, the storm rivaled the city's epic 1978 Blizzard. The snowfall total of 22.5 inches was second only to the 1978 total of 27.1 inches. Add in winds gusting to 60 mph, five foot snow drifts, huge waves and coastal flooding, and it was a storm to remember. Nantucket was blasted by hurricane force winds. 13.8 inches of snow fell in New York City. Get a daily dose of weather history by following me on Twitter @wxhistorian.
