...Severe Storms Later Today?...

UNSTABLE DAY: We have a pretty interesting forecast package today with several possibilities on the table. First off, the overnight round of rain and storms will end early this morning, with most of that rain moving well to the east of Alabama by mid-morning. There is a reasonable chance the sun will break out during the midday hours, pushing the temperature into the 67 to 70 degree range, which will contribute in making the air over North Alabama very unstable this afternoon. Then, a strong disturbance aloft will approach, and bring the possibility of additional storms firing up this afternoon, especially north of I-20. The moisture will be rather limited this afternoon, so the storms will be scattered in nature, and some spots will not see any additional rain. However, where the storms do develop, they will have the potential to become strong to severe, and the Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk (their standard risk) of severe weather across the northern third of Alabama this afternoon. While the main threat will come from hail and strong winds, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, so we will be watching the radar closely this afternoon.

The rain will move out of Alabama this evening, and tomorrow promises to be a nice mid-winter day, with a decent amount of sunshine through scattered clouds and a high in the low 60s.

MORE RAIN OVER THE WEEKEND: We will begin the weekend with a mild and breezy day Saturday along with a mix of sun and clouds. But, the next batch of rain and storms will move into our state late Saturday night. It looks like the main window for rain and storms will come from about 10:00 Saturday night through 10:00 a.m. Sunday. SPC maintains a severe weather risk for the southern two-thirds of Alabama for this event, and the rain could be heavy at times. Looks like most places will see 1 to 2 inches of rain, with potential for isolated amounts over two inches. The rain should taper off by midday Sunday, and drier and colder air settling in here Sunday night. The weather looks dry and chilly for Monday and Tuesday, with sub-freezing temperatures likely by Tuesday morning.

TEXAS TWISTERS: Yesterday brought the first severe weather outbreak of the new year; at least four tornadoes touched down over East Texas, with significant damage reported in Canton, Waskom, and Sulphur Springs. Severe thunderstorms and a few tornadoes also moved through parts of North Louisiana as well.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Severe cold was the story over the eastern third of the nation. Birmingham's low that morning was 6 degrees below zero. Jacksonville, FL recorded its all-time record low of 7 degrees. It was the coldest Inauguration day in history as President Reagan is sworn in for a second term during cold and wind that resulted in wind chill readings of 30 degrees below zero. Many counties in New York were declared disaster areas, because of heavy snow.
