...An Active January...

FRONTS AND STORMS: There is never a dull moment in this January for Alabama and that is very much the story in almost every corner of the good old USA. I do not remember seeing so many significant weather problems over such a wide area as we have had so far this month. If you have been watching the news at all, you are aware of some incredible storms on the west coast.
Alabama gets the brunt of those several days after moving ashore in the west. There is almost a parade of storms across the Central and Southern USA.

Last night was no exception. We were under a tornado watch for 31 west and south Alabama counties after midnight. Fortunately, I do not believe that we had an actual touchdown with damage reported. Strong winds and heavy rain made up for the rest of our night. The heaviest rain was down south. Here are just a few examples:

4.46 Evergreen
5.94 Mobile Regional Airport
3.97 Brookley Field Mobile
3.57 Troy
1.04 Roebuck
1.28 Tuscaloosa
1.03 Shelby County Airport

This afternoon the Storm Prediction Center posted a Tornado Watch until 5:00 p.m. which included the NW corner of Alabama. Only Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale Counties were included.

A series of changes ahead over the next few days. We believe Friday will give us a break from the rain and storms and also a decent amount of sunshine. By Saturday, it is back to the old routine. A few afternoon thunderstorms will increase in number Saturday night and a few of those could become severe. For Sunday, it will be rather windy with a chance of thunderstorms, mostly during the morning, and then turning colder Sunday night. Monday will feature morning lows in the upper 30s and highs only in the 40s with a brisk NW wind.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: It would take a short book to fully report everything that is going on. A check of the snow survey this morning shows that 43% of the lower 48 has a snow cover as compared to 52% a month ago today. However, the snow cover is becoming deeper and deeper in the west. In the last 24 hours, more than 2 feet of snow in the higher elevations of the Sierra-Nevada range, 1 foot of new snow from SW Colorado into North/Central New Mexico. The warm spot yesterday was along the Rio Grande where McAllen, Texas enjoyed 87. Coldest this morning, 5 below at Doe Lake, Michigan and 33 below at Deadhorse, Alaska where the wind chill was 51 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was up all night working weather. The majority owner also had a restless night. Little Miss Molly sure did. She hid under the bed for much of the night. She not only can hear thunder from miles away, but she has trained herself to know that heavy rain means that thunder will follow. So when it starts pouring rain, she goes ahead and finds a safe spot. She got to play some more with little Bo this morning. She now has two adorable boyfriends along the walking track—Bo and Dino. Life goes on—at times, not near enough sleep.
