...Rain, Storms This Morning...

A big upper trough is pushing east toward Alabama this morning. An area of showers and storms moved into the state from Mississippi during the early morning hours, accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and heavy rain. The rain and storms will continue to push east this morning. Temperatures will warm into the 60s by afternoon, despite mostly cloudy skies. There is a chance that we could see isolated thunderstorm development during the afternoon, even though the moisture will be departing by then. The drier and cooler air will be moving into the area in earnest by tonight.

COLDER START TO THE WORK WEEK: Monday will be partly cloudy and colder, with highs struggling to reach the lower 50s along with a brisk northwest wind. Expect a light freeze Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Tuesday and Wednesday should feature mostly sunny conditions.

LATE WEEK SYSTEM: By Wednesday, a surface low will be forming over Southeast Texas. This low will track east northeastward along the Gulf coast, winding up in South Alabama by Thursday night. As it does, rain will spread back into Alabama overnight. There is concern that there could be enough cold air in the lower levels of the atmosphere to produce freezing rain over Northwest sections late Thursday evening, with the freezing line sliding southeast overnight. By no means a forecast at this time, but something to watch. It looks like some really cold air will spread into the state for the weekend.

IN THE NEWS: Oklahoma lawmaker Pat Owenby has introduced a bill that would require mobile home park owners to develop shelter and/or evacuation plans for residents. Eight people were killed when a tornado tore through a mobile home park in Lone Grove, near Ardmore, last February. We are entering our prime severe weather season here in Alabama and many of our friends live in mobile homes. It is a great time to think ahead and have a plan of where to go and what to do well ahead of the storm. Is there a nearby shelter. Do you have friends with a basement or storm shelter? Having a plan now means less reaction time when a storm is bearing down.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week, famed severe weather research and radar expert Les Lemon will share his insight and knowledge. He has a passion for severe weather plans at large venues. Who keeps you safely informed about severe weather when you are at a football games, basketball tournament or concert? Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains. ONE YEAR AGO: A powerful storm struck France and Spain with winds over 100 mph. Named Klaus, the winter storm killed 26 people, including four children who died when winds caused a sports center to collapse in Barcelona. Power was out to over 150,000 people in Spain. Rail service between the two countries was disrupted. The minimum pressure in the storm bottomed out at 967 mb. Winds gusted to 124 mph in Spain. It was the worst since Winter Storm Martin in 1999.
