...Wet/Storm Weather Returns To Alabama...

BIG SOAKING AHEAD: We will begin this day with a 2.74" rain deficit for 2010 for Birmingham, but a large chunk of that will be knocked out during the next 36 hours as a vigorous storm system impacts Alabama. Look for periods of rain today as a warm front moves northward, but the heaviest rain will come tonight when thunderstorms could be involved. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a slight risk (their standard risk) of severe weather for parts of West and Southwest Alabama tonight, generally for areas from Tuscaloosa to Mobile. The instability values will be rather marginal for severe storms, but a few reports of hail and strong winds will be possible. In addition, the rain will be heavy at times tonight with some localized flooding problems possible. No major flooding issues are expected, however, since the ground is certainly not saturated and it can take lots of water. Rain amounts of two inches are likely.

TOMORROW: This will be an interesting day; the initial batch of rain and storms will end tomorrow morning, and we could see a few peeks of midday sunshine, which will push temperatures toward the 70 degree mark. This, in turn, will make the air rather unstable, and one more round of storms is possible late tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow evening. If those storms do indeed form, they could be strong to severe. All of the storms should be out of the state by midnight tomorrow night.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: These days will be dry and mild with highs in the 60s. Clouds and south winds will increase Saturday in advance of the next storm system in the very active southern branch of the jet stream.

STORMY SUNDAY: Another round of rain and storms will invade Alabama late in the weekend on Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of Alabama in a severe weather risk, and the rain could be heavy at times. We will be more details about this system once our mid-week storm is out of here. At first glance it looks like 1 to 2 inches of rain are likely statewide Sunday.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Dry and cooler weather is likely for the first couple of days of next week; the next storm system is due in here toward the end of the week with yet another chance of heavy rain and possibly strong storms. And, long range guidance continues to hint at Arctic air moving back down into the continental U.S. in early February. Too early to determine just how cold, and how much of that air will reach Alabama and the Deep South. Winter is far from over, you know.

IT DOES RAIN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: A powerful storm that hit the Southern California coast yesterday afternoon caused at least one tornado, four waterspouts and winds of up to 90 mph. Long Beach, Seal Beach, San Pedro and Huntington Beach were hit hardest by the fast-moving storm, which flooded streets, damaged homes, produced hail and ice and stranded cars on the 710 Freeway. Witnesses reported seeing a tornado touch down in Sunset Beach and lift boats out of the water as it came onshore.
