...Weather Will Get Stormy...

THE WEATHER MARCHES ON: This is an active time of year for weather in Alabama. It is supposed to be that way. It does not stay sluggish very long. What a difference a few days makes. From being iced down last week, temperatures this afternoon were soaring into the 60s over much of the state. That will be the story on the old overworked thermometer all the way into the weekend, including Saturday and Sunday. Nights will be comfortable, mostly in the upper 40s and even some 50s.

NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: We have a series of significant storms moving ashore on the west coast and getting caught up in the southern latitude jet stream. Timing could be a puzzle for some of our weather over the next few days, but we think it will unfold like this.

Showers on Wednesday will increase by afternoon. They will become widespread Wednesday night. By that time we will be hearing thunder. The showers and storms will persist the rest of Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, then diminish later. Friday should be dry as well as most of Saturday. But our second batch of showers and storms will arrive Saturday night and hang around through much of Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has West Central and part of South Alabama under a Slight Risk of a few severe storms later Wednesday and Wednesday night. At some point Saturday night, we may have another threat. We will watch that closely.

HOW MUCH RAIN: We have accumulated a deficiency this month of 2.56 inches, but that is insignificant because we finished 2009 with a huge surplus. We could get 2 inches or more from these two storms.

ROAMING THE NORTH AMERICAN LANDSCAPE: Vicious storms on the west coast...almost a state wide heavy rain in California...significant flash flooding already underway and mudslides will be a significant problem...the NWS in Tucson has a Winter Storm Warning for parts of Southern Arizona above 6,500 feet. They may get 12 to 20 inches of new snow and there is a possibility of blizzard conditions...the Southern California mountains will get 4 to 8 inches of additional snow from this storm and an additional 2 to 4 feet from another storm by the middle of next week. Cold spots this morning: 2 below zero at Diamond Lake, Wisconsin (I do not ever remember seeing that location take the prize)...in Alaska, it was 45 below at Selawik...good old Deadhorse had minus 43 with a wind chill of -60.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly only weighs 8 pounds, but she uses all that weight to make us happy. She is like a little psychologist. Fortunately we do not ever need a real psychologist, but even if we did, we could go talk to Little Miss Molly. When we do that, she turns her head and looks us right in the eye like she fully understands every word we are saying. Sure did catch up on some ballgames with her yesterday. She does not ask much at all—just for a few bathroom breaks each day, a couple of ballgames and a treat after each walk. She also likes to play keep away. I can tell her, I am going to get you Molly, and she will take off running all the way around the house. Life goes on.
