...Shower/Storm Chances To Drop...
GOOD MORNING! We keep promising that you will see a reduction in the number
of showers and thunderstorms affecting Alabama. Believe it or not, it will
start to happen today as drier air aloft moves into the area. More typical
summertime conditions will begin to prevail, especially by tomorrow and into
the weekend.
TODAY: Alabama continues in the midst of a warm, moist tropical airmass
near the surface on this Wednesday morning. The large upper level low that
has been located over eastern Texas has weakened into an open trough. Dry
air moving into the area will continue to erode the cloudiness today, with
breaks in the clouds likely during the morning. Those breaks will allow
temperatures to warm into the middle 80s across the area. Showers and
thunderstorms will develop across the area , with about 40 percent of the
area seeing precipitation today.
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: High pressure will begin to ridge into Alabama later
today, and that ridging will become more dominant tomorrow. This means a
return to the typical partly cloudy with scattered afternoon and evening
thunderstorms for Thursday and Friday.
WEEKEND: Looks good with partly cloudy skies and scattered afternoon and
evening thunderstorms. Highs: upper 80s, lows: lower 70s.
IN THE TROPICS: A decent tropical wave is approaching the Windward Islands
this morning. This system has been rather impressive as I continues on a
westward course. Upper level winds are unfavorable for development, but the
system will be monitored as it continues into the Caribbean.
HURRICANE TALK: ABC3340 weather intern Tiffay Kirk says, "Hurricanes are
VERY complicated. I have great respect for those working in the offices of
the National
Hurricane Center especially when there are numerous storms in the water. It
takes a tremendous amount of effort to keep watch over any sort of tropical
activity." We agree wholeheartedly Tiffany!

A SOGGY ALABAMA: Almost all of Alabama has received rain in the last 24
hours and we're not through with the showers and storms yet. They will
continue off and on tonight and there is a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms again Wednesday. After that, on Thursday and through the
weekend the weather will settle down a bit to a more summer-like pattern
with scattered mostly afternoon thunderstorms each day. The outlook for City
Stages weekend in Birmingham is for high temperatures around 90 each day
with scattered, mostly afternoon, thunderstorms. If we had to guess, we
would say about a one in four chance each afternoon
Let's look at a few of the more significant rainfall amounts in the last 24
hours:
1.66 inches at Mobile Airport
2.35 at Montgomery's Dannelly Field
1.62 in Muscle Shoals
1.92 in Troy
1.16 in Carbon Hill
1.25 in Jasper
1.82 in Robertsdale
The stronger storms were over the SE part of the state this afternoon, but
they were all moving northward. The NWS actually issued a tornado warning
for a time for Macon County.
TROPICAL WEATHER: A vigorous tropical wave was 350 miles ESE of the
Windward Islands moving WNW at 15 to 20. It will pass across the Lesser
Antilles tonight and Wednesday. Conditions are not favorable for
development. That disturbance in the Gulf that wanted to be a tropical
depression didn't have time to realize it's ambitions. It moved inland on
the Louisiana coast and was located over North Louisiana this afternoon. A
lot of places, including Alabama, have received substantial rainfall amounts
because of it. In the last 24 hours, 2.40 inches in New Orleans.
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE HERE? On June 15, 1896, the temperature reached
127 at Fort Mojave, California. It's still the highest temperature ever
recorded for the month of June in the entire USA. The low that morning was
97. Even the lows did not drop below 100 on three nights...while we're
talking about unusual weather, I was fascinated by an F3 tornado in Denver
on this date in 1988. One man, clinging to a telephone pole for dear life,
lost both shoes, a sock and buttons off of his shirt, but he
was not injured. Don't you know he has a story to tell!
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Walking with little Miss Molly, we were
impressed with how the old crows have returned. Recently they have seemed
more
interested in another tall deceased tree about 200 yards west of the Old
Crow Motel. Naturally we immediately named it the Old Crow Inn Express. We
recently changed dog food for Molly. It was the same brand, but we changed
from puppy chow to adult. It looked almost the same, but she could tell a
difference. We mixed it for the change over, but when she eats she pulls out
the old dog food and sets it aside and will only eat the new. Ah, that
little rascal stays ahead of me. I still love her dearly even if she is a
lot smarter. Life goes on with me playing catch up!

...Good Rain Chances Today...
GOOD MORNING! Greetings from Dallas where it will be sunny and hot today.
I wish I were back home with you guys enjoying the tropical moisture...
TODAY: Alabama continues in the midst of a warm and moist tropical airmass
on this Tuesday morning. Our tropical depression wannabe is defunct this
morning, drifting over the northern Gulf Coast. With all of the moisture
around, showers and thunderstorms will be a good bet today. Look for highs
to edge into the lower 80s, unless you are in one of those areas where it
rains most of the day. There could be a few scattered showers and maybe
even a storm around overnight, so we will leave rain chances in the forecast
overnight. Lows will be in the lower 70s.
WEDNESDAY: Rain chances will be cut about in half on Wednesday, as compared
to today. This will signal the return of a more typical summer like
weather pattern. Storms will be more scattered in nature as high pressure
begins to build into Alabama.
REST OF WEEK: That same summer like pattern will continue through the
remainder of the week. Expect scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms
each day. Temperatures will be near normal for this time of year.
ON THIS DATE IN 1991: Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines blew its top
beginning a rampage that would hurl debris as high as 100,000 feet into the
sky. The series of eruptions would be the most violent volcanic eruption of
the twentieth century. Material from the eruption would spread around the
globe, leading to climate changes worldwide as the sun's energy was blocked
out and global temperatures cooled by as much as 1 degree F. Do you
remember the sunsets that the ash produced?
THOSE AMAZING INTERNS: One of the excellent met interns here at 3340 has
penned today and tomorrow's editions of Weather Talk. Check out Tiffany
Kirk's installments on the models used by the National Hurricane Center.

HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING: The weather is not going to be too great over the
next 36 to 48 hours as plenty of rich moist air spreads northward from the
Gulf of Mexico aided greatly by a "wanna-be" tropical depression.
This afternoon that disturbance in the Gulf is still not a tropical
depression, but there is an outside chance it may become one in the next 24
hours. It is moving north at 5 to 10 mph. The National Hurricane Center will
send an air force plane to have a look-see this afternoon.
The system has become a little better organized, but there are still no
distinct signs of tropical development. Even so, a disturbance like this can
dump very heavy amounts of rain. A flash flood watch is in effect for
extreme South Alabama and NW Florida. Two-inch amounts will probably be
common in that area and some spots in SE Alabama could see 3 to 5 inches.
Here in Central Alabama, including the area from about Tuscaloosa-Anniston
northward, the heavier showers will hold off until late afternoon or early
this evening. Showers and thunderstorms will be increasing overnight. In the
next 24 to 36 hours don't be surprised to see some two-inch rainfall
amounts.
There is also a fairly good chance of showers and thunderstorms on
Wednesday. After that, look for the daily scattered variety.
Let's look at a few of the heavier rainfall amounts in the last 24 hours:
3.29 inches in Gadsden (ABC 33/40 Weather Net)
2.05 in Wadley
2.18 in Holt (east edge of Tuscaloosa)
2.06 at Anniston Airport
AT THE BEACH: Not a good time. Numerous showers and thunderstorms through
tomorrow with locally heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service in Mobile
warns of an increased risk of rip currents along the Gulf beaches at least
through tonight and maybe longer. Finally, the showers and thunderstorms
will decrease in number Thursday and Friday, but there will still be a
decent chance each day.
QUICK MONDAY NOTES: Extremes around the USA included 113 degrees Sunday in
Death Valley and 30 this morning in Stanley, Idaho and 34 at Barter Island,
Alaska...another risk of severe weather this afternoon and tonight in a
broad area from Kansas and Nebraska east across Missouri, Illinois, Indiana
into the Eastern Great Lakes. This includes the ominous "moderate risk" for
Northern Pennsylvania, Northern Ohio and the western half of New York State.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A real drama this morning about daylight just
outside my office window. An extra large old crow was strolling across our
driveway. The crow was dive-bombed 7 times by a young mockingbird. The crow
paid little attention. The crows are back in full force. One of our readers
said she told the crows that we missed them and they came home. A nice walk
with Miss Molly late last night and there were all kinds of varmints. It was
funny when Molly scooped up a 1,000 leg. It must have wiggled vigorously in
her mouth or tickled her tongue because she slung her head violently and
expelled it. When we came back down the walking track, the little fellow was
headed NE at 2 MPW (That stands for miles-per-week. Molly avoided him by
five feet. She is no dummy.

...Looking South for Rain...
GOOD MORNING! There has been a perceptible shift in the upper level
winds at the 500 millibar level, which equates to about 18,000 feet.
48 hours ago, those winds were out of the northwest, indicating the ridge
axis was to our west. By 24 hours ago, they had backed to southwesterly.
That ridge was still strong enough to suppress thunderstorm development for
the most part yesterday, but widely scattered storms did develop. Storms
should be slightly more numerous today, but still most areas may not see
rain. It will be hot before storms develop, and caution should be observed.
The Ozone Alert is in the YELLOW category today.
TROPICS: Hurricane Hunters may check out the broad circulation over
the southwestern Gulf of Mexico today. The low is devoid of convection, but
lots of thunderstorms are over the southern Gulf. Tropical cyclone
development could come anywhere over the southern Gulf, but even if it does
not occur, a huge amount of moisture will come northward. The models are
converging on a solution that will bring it to Southeast Louisiana Sunday
night. We now expect numerous showers and storms Monday across the state.
A surface low, or remnant of a depression will linger over Southeast Texas
into midweek and Alabama will stay in the warmth and humidity. This means a
daily chance of showers and thunderstorms each day for the remainder of the
week. Temperatures will be right around normal for the upcoming week,
except for maybe just a tad on the warm side at night. The long term
forecast past the coming week is cool and wet.
NOT AGAIN: I was literally sick at my stomach on Saturday afternoon
as I monitored severe weather in Nebraska and saw the NWS in Omaha issue a
tornado warning for a tornadic storm that projected to move near Hallam, the
tiny town that was destroyed by a 2 1/2 mile wide F$ twister on May 22nd.
Fortunately, yesterday's tornado did not materialize. Other warnings were
issued for Sumner County, Kansas, where I was able to see a tornado
producing machine two weeks ago to the day.
