...Looking South for Rain...

GOOD MORNING! There has been a perceptible shift in the upper level
winds at the 500 millibar level, which equates to about 18,000 feet.
48 hours ago, those winds were out of the northwest, indicating the ridge
axis was to our west. By 24 hours ago, they had backed to southwesterly.
That ridge was still strong enough to suppress thunderstorm development for
the most part yesterday, but widely scattered storms did develop. Storms
should be slightly more numerous today, but still most areas may not see
rain. It will be hot before storms develop, and caution should be observed.
The Ozone Alert is in the YELLOW category today.

TROPICS: Hurricane Hunters may check out the broad circulation over
the southwestern Gulf of Mexico today. The low is devoid of convection, but
lots of thunderstorms are over the southern Gulf. Tropical cyclone
development could come anywhere over the southern Gulf, but even if it does
not occur, a huge amount of moisture will come northward. The models are
converging on a solution that will bring it to Southeast Louisiana Sunday
night. We now expect numerous showers and storms Monday across the state.
A surface low, or remnant of a depression will linger over Southeast Texas
into midweek and Alabama will stay in the warmth and humidity. This means a
daily chance of showers and thunderstorms each day for the remainder of the
week. Temperatures will be right around normal for the upcoming week,
except for maybe just a tad on the warm side at night. The long term
forecast past the coming week is cool and wet.

NOT AGAIN: I was literally sick at my stomach on Saturday afternoon
as I monitored severe weather in Nebraska and saw the NWS in Omaha issue a
tornado warning for a tornadic storm that projected to move near Hallam, the
tiny town that was destroyed by a 2 1/2 mile wide F$ twister on May 22nd.
Fortunately, yesterday's tornado did not materialize. Other warnings were
issued for Sumner County, Kansas, where I was able to see a tornado
producing machine two weeks ago to the day.
