...A Cool Weather Pattern Continues...

Normally on March 10, Birmingham's high is 65 degrees.
Unfortunately, we will not get close to that figure again today as a cool
weather pattern continues over the eastern half of the nation. Even with
expected intervals of sunshine, the mercury should reach only the low 50s.

Another fast moving wave will bring clouds back to the state
tonight, and a few sprinkles are possible tomorrow morning with this
feature. Rainfall amounts will be very light and spotty due to limited
moisture.

THE WEEKEND: We are still promising a decent day on Saturday with
ample sunshine and afternoon temperatures reaching the low 60s. But, on
Sunday, another fast moving system will bring some clouds and the risk of a
few scattered light showers. Pretty much the same story; limited moisture
with light rain amounts expected.

NEXT WEEK: The longer range models are suggesting a major storm
developing toward the middle of next week, which could bring the risk of
heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, or both to parts of the deep south by
Wednesday and Thursday (March 16-17).

MARCH SNOW: There were reports of large, wet snow flakes last night
in east Alabama along the Clay-Talladega county line. There was no
accumulation. Rainfall amounts yesterday were light; we measured only .09"
here at the ABC 33/40 Weather Center in Riverchase.

ROAMING: Boston has received five inches of snow in the past two
days, pushing their season total to about 83 inches, making this season the
seventh snowiest on record. More snow will fall over New England tomorrow.
In contrast, the southwest U.S. is warming up. Yesterday's high in Phoenix
was 83 degrees.

GOOD AFTERNOON: We weather humans and our semiconductor and software
counterparts got out annual refresher course in the warming powers of the
March sun yesterday. Temperatures on Saturday soared under the effects of a
bright sun, reaching near 70 degrees in most locations across Central
Alabama. The cold front that scooted across the area on Saturday is along
the Gulf Coast this morning. Overnight readings fell into the middle 30s
in most Central Alabama locations last night. Pinson was one of the state's
coldest locations, dropping to just below freezing.

OUR WEATHER: Fair skies greeted the dawn on this Sunday morning across the
state. A fuzzy layer of high clouds had overspread much of the area. Some
stratocumulus clouds were present over South Central Alabama, behind our
cold front. The high clouds have slowed our daytime temperature rise.

SEVERE WEATHER CHANCES: Is a low pressure system over southern Saskatchewan
this afternoon. This is one of those little Alberta Clipper lows that we
have been talking about. It slipped its moorings yesterday and is sliding
southeastward in the upper flow, into the large upper level trough located
over the eastern United States. As the low passes across the Great Lakes
states, it will send a cold front southward toward Alabama. Skies will
quickly become cloudy Monday morning, and showers will begin to pop up
across the area. Instability levels will be sufficient for a line of
thunderstorms to develop ahead of the frontal system. There will also be
enough deep layer shear present to present the possibility of severe
thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening. A strong squall line is
expected to form over the Arklatex and head eastward Monday afternoon. A
few supercell storms are likely, especially to the west of Alabama Monday
afternoon and evening. These storms will be capable of damaging winds and
possible tornadoes. The Strom Prediction Center has included Alabama in a
Slight Risk Severe Weather Outlook for Monday. Alabama residents should
monitor the latest weather information on Monday.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday should feature clearing and breezy conditions.
A couple of disturbances in the Wednesday-Friday time frame may bring us
chance of showers, but the forecast is a low confidence one at this time.
There had been a brief indication in the GFS last night that cold air and
moisture might briefly mix Friday morning over North Alabama, but that idea
went back into hibernation on the morning run.

ON THIS DATE IN 1954: People in Northwest Florida awoke to a Saturday
morning surprise. Snow! An all night rainstorm changed to snow about 5
a.m. in Pensacola. The snow mostly melted as it fell for the first couple
of hours, but then it began to stick on streets and grassy areas, much to
the delight of local children. Fort Walton Beach, Crestview, Tallahassee
and Niceville all enjoyed dustings of snow. The four inch snowfall at
Milton Experimental Station sets the state all time record for 24 hours and
for a single storm. Pensacola recorded 2.1 inches, a 24 hour record there.

==================================================================

ACTION PACKED WEATHER MAP: The old weather map looks a bit angry
this afternoon. Not only do we have strong thunderstorms developing, but we
have a sharp cold front pushing toward Alabama that will move through the
state overnight. The entire State of Alabama is under a slight risk of
severe weather. Here in the north-central part of the state, the strongest
thunderstorms may occur as a line of thunderstorms moves through overnight
in connection with the cold front. Our main threat will be damaging winds
and possible hail. This does not appear to be a major severe weather
outbreak, even though we realize that if your home is damaged, it is major.

It will turn sharply colder by morning. Winds will be shifting
toward the NW during the night, sometimes at speeds of 15-30 mph with higher
gusts. By morning, the thermometer should level off to 38 or 40 and get no
higher than the upper 40s Tuesday. The rain will be ending early Tuesday.

SOMETHING ELSE TO WATCH: Another disturbance will bring some more
rain Wednesday afternoon and night. Before that precipitation ends, it could
change over to a mix of light rain and light snow as it ends early Thursday.
Temperatures early Thursday morning will be close to the freezing mark. We
don't think there will be enough of the snow to cause any problems. We will
watch it.

LOOKING ELSEWHERE: Severe Thunderstorm Watches were already in
effect this afternoon over East Texas, West Louisiana and Southern Arkansas.
Areas further to the east may come under a watch later. We do have one
advantage. The extensive cloud cover that we have had today helps to keep
our atmosphere a little more stable. That's why we believe our chance of a
severe thunderstorm will come with forcing along a rapid-moving cold front
during the night.

MONDAY NOTES: Sure did enjoy Thursday and Friday at the Southeast
States Severe Weather Symposium at Mississippi State University. Starkville
is my kind of town. Great presentations and kudos to Derek Kinkade and staff
for putting together a great program. I wish everyone could have heard
Matthew Seals give his talk as part of James Spann's presentation. You could
have heard a pin drop. It is the first standing ovation I have noticed in
the four years I have gone. The Seals family, of course, was devastated by
the April 8, 1998 F5 tornado...as much as 5 inches of snow may accumulate
tonight in the border counties along the North Carolina-Tennessee line.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little lady, Miss Molly, sure did
miss me while I was gone. She made repeated trips through every room in the
house trying to find me. When I got back late Saturday night, even though
she was sound asleep, she went into overdrive. Since that time, she has not
let me out of her sight. I made a quick 30-second dash to get the morning
paper. Even though she was curled up on my upscale National Geographic
blanket, she immediately got up and pressed her little nose against the
front door window to make sure I wasn't leaving. Lots of playing yesterday
and last night. Makes me feel good that she misses me that much. Life goes
on.

...Strong Storms Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Fairly deep low pressure is located over the northern
Great Lakes this morning. A strong cold front trails southwestward from the
low into northern Missouri and curves back into Canada. A strong flow of
Gulf moisture is streaming northward over the Mississippi Valley. This
return of moisture is the wild card in the prospects for severe weather
today.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBILITY: To get thunderstorms, we have to have
moisture and instability. To get severe storms, we need wind shear. We
will have plenty of speed shear today through a deep layer of atmosphere.
For storms to really tap the rotational qualities of that shear, we need
strong updrafts, and that takes a good bit of instability. The models
aren't too enthusiastic about the moisture return, as evidenced by their
prognostications of dew points in the lower 50s my afternoon. This could
greatly limit the prospects of severe weather. But if those dew points get
higher and a little sunshine breaks out to allow temperatures to get closer
to 70 degrees, look out.

The Storm Prediction Center has Alabama outlooked for a Slight Risk
of severe weather today. They predict that the return moisture will be
richer, with dew points between 55F-65F. We will monitor the situation
closely. Look for showers and storms to develop during the afternoon,
lasting into the evening. Some of them could become severe. The greatest
threat should be from strong winds, with the possibility of a little hail.
We can't rule out the possibility of isolated tornadoes, too. Later on
tonight, a squall line will push through the state. There will be the
threat of damaging winds with this line of storms.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tuesday will feature clearing skies. By
Wednesday, a weakening disturbance will be heading our way. We could see a
few showers Wednesday afternoon and evening. Another disturbance will slide
our way late Thursday night. The atmosphere could be cold enough for a
little light snow over North Alabama early Friday morning, but no problems
are expected at this time.

...A Little Lionish Today...

GOOD MORNING! Greetings from Starkville, Mississippi and Mississippi State University, site of the fourth annual Southeast Severe Storms Symposium. It will be an interesting day of speakers on tropical and severe weather.

BREEZY DAY: The eastern half of the United States continues under the influence of northwesterly flow aloft, thanks to a large upper trough. A clipper low pressure system is slipping quickly southeastward over extreme eastern Kentucky. This clipper system is spreading a cold front our way.

The front will pass through the area this morning. The front did generate a few showers and storms overnight to our north, but it should be mostly dry as it passes. Can’t rule out a shower early, but that looks unlikely.

Strong westerly winds will develop behind the front today, and a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect. Boaters should exercise extreme caution for winds gusting over 25 mph at times. Cooler air behind the front will allow overnight readings to drop into the middle 30s.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow promises to be a nice day, with lots of sunshine. Temperatures will be mild, with afternoon readings topping out in the lower 60s.

WORK WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature increasing clouds as another low pressure system moves across the Great Lakes. Showers may break out Monday afternoon, and showers and even a few storms will be likely Monday night. The precipitation will end by early Tuesday. Another system will bring shower chances Wednesday night and again late Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: A major wildfire over western Dade County Florida southwest of Miami threatened homes as southern Florida continued in its worst drought in 200 years. Rainfall levels over a three year drought period were running five feet below normal in some locations. The Florida Aquifer, which supplies most of the potable water was reportedly at its lowest level in history. Intense development has put a tremendous strain on Florida’s water resource as agricultural land has been converted into suburban sprawl.
