...A Little Lionish Today...

GOOD MORNING! Greetings from Starkville, Mississippi and Mississippi State University, site of the fourth annual Southeast Severe Storms Symposium. It will be an interesting day of speakers on tropical and severe weather.

BREEZY DAY: The eastern half of the United States continues under the influence of northwesterly flow aloft, thanks to a large upper trough. A clipper low pressure system is slipping quickly southeastward over extreme eastern Kentucky. This clipper system is spreading a cold front our way.

The front will pass through the area this morning. The front did generate a few showers and storms overnight to our north, but it should be mostly dry as it passes. Can’t rule out a shower early, but that looks unlikely.

Strong westerly winds will develop behind the front today, and a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect. Boaters should exercise extreme caution for winds gusting over 25 mph at times. Cooler air behind the front will allow overnight readings to drop into the middle 30s.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow promises to be a nice day, with lots of sunshine. Temperatures will be mild, with afternoon readings topping out in the lower 60s.

WORK WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature increasing clouds as another low pressure system moves across the Great Lakes. Showers may break out Monday afternoon, and showers and even a few storms will be likely Monday night. The precipitation will end by early Tuesday. Another system will bring shower chances Wednesday night and again late Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: A major wildfire over western Dade County Florida southwest of Miami threatened homes as southern Florida continued in its worst drought in 200 years. Rainfall levels over a three year drought period were running five feet below normal in some locations. The Florida Aquifer, which supplies most of the potable water was reportedly at its lowest level in history. Intense development has put a tremendous strain on Florida’s water resource as agricultural land has been converted into suburban sprawl.
