...Nice November Saturday...

Saturday dawned clear and chilly across Alabama this morning. With
quick clearing overnight, temperatures were able to drop quickly
across North and North Central sections of the state. Patchy fog
occurred because of the excellent radiational cooling conditions that
allowed residual moisture to condense, but it burned off quickly. It
has been a beautiful day with highs in the middle to upper 60s for the
most part withnear total sunshine.

TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY: Temperatures will be chilly tonight, with
lows averaging around 35. Cooler air will flow in overnight, and may
be accompanied by low clouds coming with the surge. Lows will average
around 36, and some frost may occur, although wind and clouds may work
against this. Sunday will be feature sunny skies, but temperatures
will struggle to get into the 60s, so it will be chilly. Another cold
night is expected Sunday night as high pressure settles in overhead.
Monday will be a nice day with a good supply of sunshine and highs
back in the 60s.

ACTIVE WEEK AHEAD: A strong upper level disturbance will swing out
onto the Plains from Arizona and New Mexico Sunday night This will
produce potentially severe weather tonight over parts of Texas and
Oklahoma Sunday night. The will spread eastward into the Pineywoods
of East Texas and into the Arklatex on Monday, as far eastward as
Shreveport and Lafayette, LA. The system should weaken as it moves
eastward on Tuesday. It will push showers into Alabama early on
Tuesday.

There could be a few embedded storms, but no severe weather is
expected. Alabama will remain in a west southwesterly flow that will
be punctuated by a series of disturbances. The second should pass on
Wednesday, bringing another round of showers and storms. The final
and biggest disturbance will approach on Thursday, sparking more rain
and storms. A surface low may form near the Gulf Coast and swing our
way Thursday night, bringing a chance of heavy rain and storms through
the nighttime and into Friday morning. Severe weather is possible
with this system. Rain will end on Friday, but Saturday looks
blustery with some light rain and cooler temperatures.

PALOMA POUNDS THE CAYMANS: Major Hurricane Paloma brushed past Grand
Cayman with little damage last night, but intensified into a Category
Four hurricane as it drew a bead on the sister islands of Little
Cayman and Cayman Brac. Winds of over 135 mph were reported, along
with a 4-8 foot surge in the sister islands. No injury reports yet,
but damage will be heavy. Roofs were ripped off homes and even from
shelters. Paloma will cross eastern Cuba tonight with winds of 140
mph and a surge as high as 23 feet. Damage will be severe.

GEOGRAPHY CLASS: The Cayman Islands are among the most beautiful
places on earth. Rising from the Cayman Trench in the Caribbean, the
islands are actually the tops of mountains from the Cuban Maestra
Range that extend above the water south of Cuba. Seventy percent of
the economy comes from tourism. Another large part comes from tax
haven banking. Grand Cayman is the largest island and where most of
the development is located. Two sister islands lie to the east
northeast of Grand Cayman. Little Cayman is about 84 miles from Grand
Cayman, and is the smallest at just ten square miles. Less than 170
people live there. Five miles to the east is Cayman Brac. Brac means
bluff, named for the large bluff on the eastern end of the island. It
is fourteen square miles and sparsely populated.

FIRST FORECAST: On this date in 1870, the U.S. Signal Corps issued
its first storm warning, a cautionary forecast for the Great Lakes.
The first bulletin read: "High wind all day yesterday at Cheyenne and
Omaha; a very high wind this morning at Omaha; barometer falling with
high winds today at Chicago and Milwaukee; barometer falling and
thermometer rising at Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo and
Rochester; high winds probable along the Lakes."

...Powerful Paloma...

Major hurricanes are rare in November. There have only been four
since 1871. Two additional ones have made their way from October into
November. The last one was Michelle, in 2001, a category four
hurricane that struck Cuba. The strongest and a candidate for most
unusual was 1999's Hurricane Lenny. The powerful hurricane reached a
max intensity of 155 mph as it made a beeline across the Caribbean
from west to east. Wrong Way Lenny was its nickname.

COOLER FOR THE WEEKEND: Clearing skies, relatively calm conditions
and a it of surface moisture have led to the formation of fog this
morning across the area. The patchy fog will lift by mid-morning.
Skies will be mostly sunny with a cool westerly breeze, occasionally
approaching 20 mph. After morning lows in the 40s, afternoon readings
will rise into the middle 60s. Tonight will be clear and chilly.
Lows will drop into the middle and upper 30s. Some of the normally
colder locations will experience a light freeze. Sunday will be a lot
like today, except a few degrees cooler and a little less breeze.
Some spots may not get out of the 50s tomorrow.

NEXT WEEK: Monday will dawn clear and cold again, but temperatures
will begin to moderate during the day as our winds turn around to the
southeast. Clouds will be on the increase Monday night as a cold
front approaches from the west. Showers will arrive during the day on
Tuesday. There could be few storms, but it doesn't look like anything
will get out of hand. There is a good chance that the front will
stall over Alabama by Wednesday as we find ourselves in a
southwesterly flow aloft. This will keep rain chances in the forecast
for Wednesday. A bigger storm system will affect the area on Thursday
or Friday, bringing along a good chance of rain with it. Look for
another storm system to follow on the heels of the late week system.

THE LATEST ON PALOMA: Paloma became a major hurricane last night. It
passed between Grand Cayman and Little Cayman and Cayman Brac as a
category three hurricane with winds of 115 mph. It will weaken very
slowly as it moves toward the central Cuban coast today. It should
make landfall between Cienfuegos and Camaguey around midnight
tonight. It will weaken dramatically as it crosses Cuba. As it moves
through the Bahamas tomorrow, it will encounter very strong wind shear
and will weaken rapidly. As a matter of fact, Paloma may cease to
exist by late Monday.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: U. T. Martin travels to Auburn for the Auburn
homecoming game tomorrow afternoon. Kick off is 1:30 and on PPV only.
Look for sunshine with a temperature around 68 at kick off and in the
50s by the 4th quarter. Alabama will be playing LSU in Baton Rouge
with a 2:30 kick off Saturday on CBS. It should be mostly sunny with
about 72 at kick off and 60s in the second half. No significant wind.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: An early season snowstorm brought one to three
feet of snow to the mountains of Colorado. Twenty nine inches was
reported at Wolf Creek Pass and 31 inches at Monarch Pass. The
Crested Butte ski area picked up thirty six inches.

...A Sunny, Cool Weekend...

EARLY CHILL NEXT SEVERAL DAYS: Today was a textbook example of the
have(s) and the have not(s) when it comes to dishing out the rain.
Mother Nature does that often. A number of communities today hardly
had enough to wet the ground. Still other communities, especially in
the north and NW part of the state, received a good soaking. Blame all
of that on a weather system that slowed to a crawl as it got closer to
Alabama. It rained for hours over the NW counties. In Central Alabama,
very little rain fell in the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham area.

A cold front was pushing into the state this afternoon. As it
encountered a good moisture pool over South Alabama, a line of
thunderstorms developed. Those were moving through SE Alabama this
afternoon. That cold front should be near the Georgia coast by
daybreak Saturday. Cooler air will be spilling into Alabama from the
north and west. It looks like a mostly sunny weekend with chilly
nights and cool days. We may see our lowest temperatures about Sunday
morning and some scattered light frost should dot the Alabama
countryside. Low temperatures both Sunday and Monday should be 35 to
38 across Central Alabama. We will likely see a light freeze in some
of the North Alabama colder valleys. It happens often in autumn and
winter with terrain like we have in Alabama.

A few examples of the more significant rain in Alabama so far today.
These totals are incomplete, because it was still raining in parts of
the state.

0.90 Haleyville
0.85 Decatur
1.21 Phil Campbell
0.96 Waterloo (in the NW corner of Alabama)
0.79 eight miles WSW of Russellville
0.78 just NNW of Rogersville

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school playoff games tonight, still a
slight risk of a shower, mainly on the east side of the state. Auburn
will host U. T. Martin for their homecoming game Saturday afternoon
with a 1:30 kick off on PPV. It should be sunny with about 68 at kick
off and in the 50s in the 4th quarter. Alabama is in Baton Rouge to
play LSU at 2:30 Saturday on CBS. Mostly sunny, about 75 at kick off,
and in the 60s in the second half. If you are driving down to Baton
Rouge this afternoon or tonight, the rain has already ended in that
area and the sky was clearing.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Paloma was projected to become a mean
Category 2 later today or tonight. After crossing near Grand Cayman,
the hurricane is expected to cross the very center of Cuba and then
continue NE through the Bahamas by Monday and then into the open
Atlantic. The main impact on Cuba will be Saturday night and Sunday.
Meanwhile, we had a question this morning if there had ever been a
situation where a blizzard and hurricane was ongoing at the same time,
especially with the hurricane as close by as the Caribbean. Maybe Bill
Murray will answer that tonight when he writes the edition for
Saturday morning.

GLOBAL ROAMING: That was quite a blizzard in the Midwest. Deadwood,
South Dakota got 45.7 inches of snow, Blind Bull Summit, Wyoming got
15 inches and near 21 inches at Afton, Wyoming. Cold temperatures this
morning 3 below zero at Climax, Colorado and 20 below at Eielson AFB,
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another busy day trying to get Molly's
house refinanced because our mortgage holder, Washington Mutual, bit
the dust. Little Miss Molly, of course, got ignored, but I did have
one 3-minute fast-moving ballgame with her because she entrapped me
when I went to the kitchen to get another cup of coffee. She will get
right in the middle of the living area and kick a ball toward me. Life
goes on.

...A Few Showers Today...

COLD FRONT MOVING THROUGH: A cold front will pass through Alabama
today, and will bring a few passing rain showers to the state. Rain
totals should be on the light side, generally a quarter-inch or less,
since moisture is limited and the best dynamics will be far to the
north of Alabama. The showers will move out of the state by the
evening hours as the front moves on to the east.

A COOL WEEKEND: Sunshine returns in full supply tomorrow and Sunday,
with noticeably cooler temperatures. We expect highs mostly in the 64
to 67 degree range over the weekend, with early morning lows well down
in the 40s. The colder valleys should be in the 30s at daybreak Sunday
with a clear sky and light wind.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: There is an outside risk of a shower for the first
half of tonight's high school playoff games over the eastern third of
Alabama, but most stadiums will be dry. Temperatures will fall into
the 50s during the games with a cloudy sky.
U. T. Martin travels to Auburn for the Auburn homecoming game tomorrow
afternoon. Kick off is 1:30 and on PPV only. Look for sunshine with a
temperature around 68 at kick off and in the 50s by the 4th quarter.
Alabama will be playing LSU in Baton Rouge with a 2:30 kick off
Saturday on CBS. It should be mostly sunny with about 72 at kick off
and 60s in the second half. No significant wind.

NEXT WEEK: A rather active pattern is setting up for next week; one
weather system will bring periods of rain on Veteran's Day (Tuesday),
with potential of one-half inch statewide. A stronger and more dynamic
system is due in here late in the week, and will bring the dual threat
of heavy rain and strong to severe storms by Friday (November 14).

SOUTH DAKOTA BLIZZARD: Yet another major early season snowstorm
dropped almost 46 inches of snow near Deadwood, South Dakota
yesterday. Reports of 10 inches to 2 feet of snow have been received
from many counties in the Black Hills. In some towns, residents
reported drifts were blocking their doorways. Shannon County reported
20-foot snowdrifts. Dozens of vehicles were stranded along Interstate
90; some have been stranded for more than 24 hours and that search
teams can't get to them because of zero visibility.

LATE SEASON HURRICANE: Paloma is packing sustained winds of 75 mph,
and is headed for a landfall on the south coast of Cuba late in the
weekend. There is some
chance Paloma could become a major hurricane by the time it reaches
Cuba. The system will continue moving northeast, across the Bahamas,
and into the open Atlantic early next week as it becomes extra-tropical.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Our annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is
coming up on Saturday November 15 at the BJCC during the annual
Birmingham International Auto Show. We will begin at 9:30, and be out
by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free
admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no
admission charge, and no need to register.

...Chance of Showers Tomorrow...

A SUNNY WEEKEND: An eastward moving cold front is near the
Mississippi River this afternoon and moving toward the east, but
generally in no hurry. For Central Alabama, the front is expected to
arrive around mid morning Friday and by late in the day it should be
down in peanut country in SE Alabama.
There will be some showers along and ahead of the front. You might
hear a few rumbles of thunder, but we do not expect a significant
thunderstorm situation at all. Unfortunately, our hope for a
significant amount of rain is also rather low. Most communities will
be lucky to get around 1/3 of an inch. The clouds should move out
before daybreak Saturday leaving some more autumn weather for Alabama
for the weekend. Looking way down the road, we may have a more
significant chance of showers and some thunderstorms about Tuesday.

THIS WEEKEND: Look for mostly sunshine with chilly mornings and
comfortable afternoons. Low temperatures both Sunday and Monday will
be close to 40 and most surely some 30s in the colder valleys of North
Alabama. Highs both Sunday and Monday should be in the 60s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: U. T. Martin travels to Auburn for the Auburn
Homecoming game Saturday afternoon. Kick off is 1:30 and for PPV only.
Look for sunshine with a
temperature around 68 to 70 at kick off and in the 50s by the 4th
quarter. Alabama will be playing LSU in Baton Rouge with a 2:30 kick
off Saturday on CBS. It should be mostly sunny with about 72 at kick
off and 60s in the second half. No significant wind.

TROPICAL WEATHER: It is a late one but Tropical Storm Paloma was
growing stronger this afternoon and it was turning north from a
position about 100 miles NE of Cabo Gracias A Dios on the Nicaragua/
Honduras border. It should turn more NE late on Friday or Saturday.
Winds had increased to 60 mph. It is forecast to strengthen steadily
in the next couple of days. It could become a hurricane tonight or
tomorrow. The official track forecast turns it NE passing through the
Western Caribbean and right across the center of Cuba. Then it moves
out into the open Atlantic toward the Bahamas. It should be a
hurricane even before reaching Cuba. That country has really had an
overdose of tropical systems this season with disastrous human
suffering and property damage.

GLOBAL ROAMING: An amazing winter storm plowing across the Northern
Plains. The low-pressure center should be in Minnesota by tomorrow
morning. The big story has been in the Dakotas and parts of Wyoming.
As much as 3 feet of snow has accumulated in Western South Dakota in
drifts and there were near whiteout conditions at times. Visibility
was as low as zero. A wind gust of 81 mph occurred at Horse Creek,
Wyoming. Automated wind instruments showed a gust of over 100 mph at
Buffalo, Wyoming and Rapid City, South Dakota. The NWS believes those
are too high. An official gust to 72 mph at Rapid City Airport. Alta,
Utah, in the Wasatch Mountains, got 34 inches of snow from this storm
system. Coldest temperatures in the USA this morning was zero at
Meeker, Colorado and 13 below at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sadly we have lost another great
neighbor on our street. Her funeral was today. That is the second one
is less than a week. The funeral today was for one of the best friends
of Molly. Every time she would be out in her backyard and saw us
walking the track, she would come up a slight embankment and across
the open area near the Old Crow Motel specifically to have a love
session with Molly. That, of course, included a belly rub. For a long
time in the future, Molly will plop down in the grass near her home
and hope she will come out. Next week I want to run another story of a
person who lost their dog. Life goes on, but unfortunately little
doggies do not live as long as we do.

...Showers Tomorrow; A Cooler Weekend...

WEATHER CHANGES AHEAD: We will squeeze out one more dry, mild day
today. Lots of sunshine and a very mild afternoon for November; most
communities will rise into the 74 to 78 degree range this afternoon;
some towns near the Mississippi border will approach the 80 degree
mark. The low levels remain dry and there is no significant chance of
rain through midnight.

TO THE WEST: A significant storm system is moving through the Plains,
and showers and storms today are likely from the eastern part of Texas
north to the Great Lakes region. Some of the storms could be strong to
severe over Louisiana and adjacent states, but the severe weather
threat will diminish tonight as the upper air support remains far to
the north, and the air becomes more unstable.

HERE IN ALABAMA: The showers along the front should move into Alabama
during the day tomorrow; at this time it looks like the best chance of
showers will come from about 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Due to limited
moisture, rain amounts should be light; mostly a quarter of an inch or
less. Most of the showers should out of the state by the time the high
school football games begin tomorrow night, but a little lingering
light rain is not out of the question tomorrow evening over East
Alabama.

COOLER AIR FOR THE WEEKEND: Highs will drop into the mid 60s Saturday
and Sunday, with early morning well down in the 40s. The colder
valleys should be in the 30s at daybreak Sunday. Dry air means
sunshine in full supply both days.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday is homecoming at Auburn; the Tigers will
host Tennessee Martin at 1:30 (pay per view only)… the sky will be
sunny with a kickoff temperature of 64 degrees, falling into the 50s
by the fourth quarter. Alabama is on the road; they will play LSU in
Baton Rouge at 2:30 Saturday afternoon (CBS TV); the sky will be sunny
with a kickoff temperature of 72 degrees, falling into the 60s during
the second half.

NEXT WEEK: We have two potential rain producers next week; the first
one will bring a chance of showers, and possibly a thunderstorm on
Tuesday, Veteran's Day. This system will bring the chance of around
one-half inch of rain. A stronger system is due in here at the end of
next week; if the models are correct this one could bring the dual
threat of heavy rain and strong to severe storms. For now the target
date of the second system is Friday November 14. This, of course, is
subject to change.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Strong thunderstorms were responsible for 63
reports of large hail late yesterday and last night from Oklahoma
north to Minnesota. There was tree and power line damage in parts of
Oklahoma and Kansas. Coldest place in the nation yesterday morning was
Nikolai, Alaska with 16 degrees below zero. Coldest in the lower 48
was Stanley, Idaho with 10 degrees. Hottest place was Laredo, Texas
with 91 degrees.

...Some Changes Ahead...

SHOWERS BY FRIDAY: An intense low-pressure area was prowling the
Northern Plains this afternoon. It will have an affect on Alabama
weather a little later. By tomorrow morning, a cold front should be
pushing into NW Arkansas and by late Thursday to near Memphis. By
Friday morning, the front should be approaching NW Alabama and by
Saturday morning it should be over near Charleston and Savannah.
SO WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN: SW winds will be bringing in some
moisture from our dear friend, the Gulf of Mexico. As the front
approaches, scattered showers will reach Alabama Friday and some of
those could start as early as late Thursday night. Some of our models
want to linger some showers into Saturday morning. We are tossing that
out for the time being and calling for mostly sunny weather for most
of Saturday. We do not see any unusually cold weather all the way
through the middle of next week, but by Saturday and Sunday morning
temperatures will be in the lower 40s and some North Alabama valleys
may have upper 30s.

SEVERE WEATHER: We believe that by the time the showers reach
Alabama, most of the potent energy will have passed north of Alabama.
Meanwhile, the Storm Prediction Center has posted a Slight Risk for
this afternoon and tonight for NE Texas northward into Eastern South
Dakota and SW Minnesota. Within that, they have also posted a Moderate
Risk for extreme NE Oklahoma and SE Kansas. For tomorrow, the Slight
Risk shifts eastward covering extreme East Texas, most of Louisiana
(except the extreme SE), extreme South Arkansas and the west edge of
Mississippi.

OUR SECONDARY SEVERE WEATHER SEASON: Remember, this is November and
Alabama can have some very active thunderstorms this time of year
during the seasonal change and this threat can last into December. For
several years in a row, the autumn severe weather season was more
active than the spring season. A long history, however, shows that
more often than not, March, April and May are the kings for severe
weather.

GLOBAL ROAMING: That intense low over the Plains is going to cause
some very interesting weather. Blizzard conditions are posted for
parts of the Northern Plains and some heavy snow is expected in the
Colorado mountains. Highest temperature yesterday was 90 in Laredo and
Pecos, Texas. Will never forget spending the night in a motel in Pecos
during a blinding dust storm. By morning we could not get out the door
because of piles of sand and a mountain of tumbleweeds.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Quite a night for Little Miss Molly.
Long evening of watching election returns and having no time to spend
with her. Some of the folks in our house went to bed fairly early. The
majority owner got tired of the returns and went to bed. Another
family member came in from Atlanta late. I had fallen asleep, but
awoke and watched the returns until past midnight. Little Miss Molly
spent the whole evening going from place to place trying to find a
quiet place to sleep. I finally took her to the big bed as 12:30 a.m.
and boy, did she pass out quickly. I hate to treat her like that, but
I am a big fan of election returns. I would rather watch those almost
as much as Gunsmoke, Yogi Bear and Andy Griffith. Life goes on. I will
make it up to Molly this afternoon.

...A Few Showers By Friday...

AFTERNOONS REMAIN MILD: We are forecasting highs in the 74 to 78
degree range across Alabama today and tomorrow; almost ten degrees
above average values for early November. Both days should feature a
good supply of sunshine with only a few scattered clouds.

TO THE WEST: While we enjoy more very pleasant weather, a significant
storm system will move into the Plains later today, and will bring the
risk of strong to severe thunderstorms to the broad area from Dallas/
Fort Worth to Minneapolis. The Storm Prediction Center maintains a
slight risk of severe weather in this area this afternoon and tonight,
with the risk shifting to the east tomorrow, including the area from
Houston to the southern tip of Illinois.

SHOWERS ON FRIDAY: We don't expect any severe weather when that system
in arrives in Alabama Friday, and quite frankly, don't expect much
thunder with a rather stable airmass in place and only limited
moisture. Rainfall amounts will be on the light side, with most spots
getting a quarter-inch or less. The best chance of showers will come
from around 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Friday, and we believe the rain
should be over by the time the high school football games begin Friday
night.

A COOLER WEEKEND: The weekend will be dry, but noticeably cooler.
Highs will be in the 60s on Saturday and Sunday, with early morning
lows well down in the 40s. The colder valleys should reach the 30s by
daybreak Sunday. Both days will feature lots of sunshine; it will be a
great weekend for football, and checking out the fall colors that are
beginning to peak across our state.

NEXT WEEK: An active, progressive pattern shows up next week across
North America; a fast moving wave is now expected to bring showers and
possibly a thunderstorm to the state on Veteran's Day, Tuesday
(November 11). Then, a stronger system is due in here toward the end
of the week, or the beginning of the following weekend (November
14/15); that one could bring strong storms to Alabama.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain surplus for 2008 is dwindling; the
total since January 1 is 46.20", which is only 0.77" above average.
Elsewhere, most Alabama cities are reporting a rain deficiency for the
year. Deficits for 2008 include -12.73" at Tuscaloosa, -2.72" at
Anniston, and -2.56" at Montgomery.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Hottest places in the nation yesterday were
Laredo and Pecos, Texas with 90 degrees. Coldest spot was Deadhorse,
Alaska with 10
degrees below zero. Coldest in the lower 48: Cutbank, Polebridge, and
Chinook, Montana with 19. A soaking rain fell over parts of the mid-
Atlantic region yesterday; the rain total at Raleigh/Durham, NC was .
98". Rain was also widespread along the Pacific Northwest coast; the
total at Portland was .82".

...Warming Trend Continues...

CHANCE OF SHOWERS ON FRIDAY: No way to improve on Election Day
weather across Alabama. Based on news reports, there is a heavy
turnout of voters and officials predict a record turnout. There has
been a little bit of cloudiness circulating into SE Alabama due to a
persistent low off the coast of the Carolinas, but overall we expect
lots of clear weather to continue through most of Thursday.

There was quite a variation in low temperatures across Alabama this
morning. At Scrougout in NE Alabama, the low was 36. That broke a
string of 8 consecutive mornings with temperatures freezing or lower.
In contrast, it was 15 degrees warmer atop Mt. Cheaha this morning
with a low of 51.

DID YOU KNOW that Mt. Cheaha was originally named by the Creek
Indians. They called it Chaha, which meant "high places." Cheaha is
the highest point in Alabama
with an elevation of 2,047 feet. There is a nice story about Mt.
Cheaha State Park in the October edition of Outdoor Alabama that came
in the mail today.

OUR NEXT RAIN: It does not appear to be a major rain event, but it
looks like Friday is our best chance as another cold front pushes
through from the NW. The front will be moving across Alabama during
the day Friday. By Saturday, it should be over by the Georgia coast
and we will have clearing and cooler weather on Saturday. Over the
weekend, highs will only be in the mid 60s and lows 43 to 45.

SEVERE WEATHER: As that front pushes toward the SE, a slight risk of
severe weather is indicated from East Oklahoma and East Kansas into
West Missouri, East Nebraska and Western Iowa. For Thursday and
Thursday night, the slight risk is shifted eastward to include part of
East Texas, almost all of Louisiana and Mississippi and extending
northward through East Arkansas, West Tennessee into Southern Illinois.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Todd Foisey, our 33/40 Weather Watcher at Girwood,
Alaska reports 28 of the last 30 days with high temperatures below
average. During that time, the average high has been 7 degrees below
normal. 90 in Casa Grande, Arizona was the hot spot yesterday. Cold
places this morning included 19 at Cutbank, Montana and 8 below at
McGrath, Alaska. There was 9 inches of snow on the ground at Fairbanks
and 11 inches at Barrow, Alaska. Barking Sands, Hawaii had 71. Just
threw that in because of the unusual name. 8 to 14 inches of new snow
is forecast for the Colorado mountains. The persistent low-pressure
area along the Mid-Atlantic coast dumped 4.56 inches of rain at
Beaufort, North Carolina in the last 24 hours and 3.35 at Hatteras.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was quite a standoff. Reminded me of
Matt Dillon facing a gunman in the streets of Dodge City. Much smaller
creatures involved
this morning. It was Little Miss Molly and the CC (Community Cat).
They happened to meet on the walking track and the cat did not run
right away. Molly was digging her claws into the concrete and pulling
on the leash with all her might to catch the cat. Finally the cat took
off and Molly calmed down. I still wonder how little dogs, almost from
birth, know that they are supposed to chase cats and rabbits. At a
real young age, how do they distinguish. Proves again that Molly has
twice my IQ. Life goes on. I will be as smart as she is one of these
days.

...A Sunny Election Day...

DRY THROUGH MID-WEEK: If you have enjoyed the weather in recent days,
then you should like our forecast through mid-week. Basically more of
the same, mostly sunny mild days and clear cool nights through
Thursday. You will see a few scattered clouds during the afternoon
hours, but the low levels remain dry and there is no chance of rain.

ELECTION DAY WEATHER: Of course, we will enjoy perfect weather here in
Alabama on this election day, and most of the nation will be in good
shape as well. The weather will be dry through the major population
centers in the Northeast and the Midwest. A few scattered showers are
possible around Washington and Baltimore, and some rain is likely
along the northern Pacific coast.

OUR NEXT RAIN OPPORTUNITY: A strong storm system will move out of the
Rockies into the Great Plains tomorrow; that will bring the risk of
strong to severe thunderstorms over the nation's mid-section tomorrow;
the storms will slowly to the east, and by Thursday the best chance of
them will be in the general area from Houston to Chicago. Here in
Alabama, we will introduce a chance of showers on Friday, but we don't
expect any severe weather, and rain should be relatively light with
limited moisture and instability. We figure most spots will get only a
quarter-inch or less, and the best chance of showers will come from
about 3:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Most all of the showers should be out
of Alabama in time for the high football games Friday night.

WEEKEND PEEK: Looks like another delightful weekend for Alabama as a
fresh supply of cool, dry air drops into the state. Highs will be in
the 60s, with lows well down in the 40s. The colder valleys should be
in the 30s at daybreak Sunday.

EXTREMES: The warmest spot in the nation yesterday was Pecos, Texas
with 88 degrees; coldest was Kaltag, Alaska with 17 degrees below
zero. Coldest in the continental U.S. was Berlin, NH with 16 degrees.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 15 at the BJCC during
the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by
the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has
trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years), and learn
from one of the most brilliant weather researchers in the country, our
own Dr. Tim Coleman. We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend
this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin
at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert
Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show.
There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up,
but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.

...Moderating Temperatures...

GREAT WEATHER FOR VOTING: If you decide to not vote tomorrow, there
is absolutely no way you can blame it on the weather. In every nook
and corner of Alabama, the weather will be ideal. Even if you go to
the polls at 7:00 a.m., temperatures should already be in the lower
50s and the high during the afternoon should be in the mid 70s with
mostly sunshine.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: No more real chilly temperatures all the way
through the weekend. We do look for another cold front later in the
week. That front was in the Central Plains this afternoon. It should
come sliding through Alabama at some point late Thursday night and
early Friday. There may not be a ton of moisture ingested into the
system to give us a widespread rain, but most everybody will have a
decent chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly Thursday
night and Friday morning. The front will bring some cooler
temperatures starting on Friday with highs by Saturday and Sunday
backing off to the middle 60s. Too early to be specific on college
football weather Saturday, but it looks generally good with highs in
the60s.

MORE TORNADOES COMPARED TO LONG AGO: I was glad to see the story by
Bill Murray about that in the morning edition. There is no question
that there are a lot more tornadoes than 30 years ago. We are not
really having more in the long term, but they are detected much more
easily now with Doppler radar augmented by an extensive storm spotter
network and far better communications. Zillions of cell phones out in
the countryside and ham radio operators are always a great addition.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Down here in the lower 48 states, the thermometer was
as high as 92 Sunday in Bullhead City, Arizona and as low as 16 this
morning in Berlin, New Hampshire. Up in the NW country, 4 to 10 inches
of new snow is expected in Yellowstone National Park in the next 2 or
3 days. Quite a variety of weather in Alaska on Barter Island just off
the north coast. It was 14 as noon approached with east winds gusting
to 46 mph and a wind chill of 8 below. In good old Deadhorse, it was 2
above with a wind chill of 16 below. One time a number of years ago, a
polar bear was found strolling down the second floor hallway of the
Deadhorse Hotel.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I get a bit jittery this time of year
afraid that the autumn leaves will be gone before I get a full dose of
enjoyment. A marked change over the weekend. They are really coming
out. The recent frost sent kudzu scrambling for cover and it is going
into its winter wardrobe—grey leaves all crumpled. The scene along
Edwards Lake Road in Huffman by the Ingram Lake is awesome. Little
Miss Molly does not pay much attention to the autumn foliage, but in
the semi-darkness the other morning she took off after a large leaf
off the sassafras tree was being blown about by the wind. She may have
thought it was a baby rabbit. I wish you could have seen the little
girl Halloween night. We had at least 30 or 40 youngsters come by. She
greeted all the little children and some of them gave her a head rub.
She was exhausted by 9:00 when there was no more traffic. Life goes
on.

...Next Rain Chance Late In Week...

After a tremendous Sunday weather matinee, our weekend cast of fine
autumn weather has been booked for an encore performance through
midweek here in the Magic City. In fact, it may even hang around for
an encore performance for much of Thursday. Heck, as the ensemble
adds a southerly wind to its repertoire by Wednesday, temperatures may
even push 80 degrees across parts of the area Wednesday and Thursday.
The curtain will close by Friday as a cold front pushes through the
area, preceded by showers and storms.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: The upper air pattern over North America
features a trough in the west, a ridge across the Mississippi Valley
and a trough over the Northeast. At the surface, big high pressure is
off the coast of New England. It is ridging all the way down into
Alabama and the Deep South as these persistent highs have done so
often recently. The upper ridge and the surface high are responsible
for our fine weather. The next factor in our weather will be the
western system. Those are the players. Oh wait. One more. A
coastal low will form off the Carolinas. Let's see how the scenario
might play out.

'TIL FRIDAY: Another beautiful day today. Highs will be in the
middle 70s. Ditto for Tuesday. By Tuesday, the coastal low will
switch our winds around to the north, bringing in a little drier air.
By Wednesday, the western system will spin up a strong low pressure
system that will move out onto the Plains. Winds will shift around to
southerly and moisture levels will begin to rise over Alabama.
Temperatures may even approach 80 in some areas on Wednesday and
Thursday. By Thursday afternoon, showers and storms will be
approaching Northwest Alabama ahead of a cold front trailing from the
surface low. Those showers and storms will move across the state
starting late Thursday night into Friday. They should be ending from
the west by late morning. Hopefully, we will squeeze about a half
inch or so of rain from this system.

THE WEEKEND: Drier air will flow in on westerly and northwesterly
winds starting Friday afternoon. High pressure will begin to build
into Alabama, setting the stage for a cooler and dry weekend. Highs
on Saturday and Sunday will top out only around 60 degrees, a little
below normal for this time of year.

CHECK ON THE TROPICS: A disturbance over the southwestern Caribbean
shows some promise for tropical cyclone development. In fact, there
are signs that we could see Tropical Storm Paloma at some point this
week in t he Caribbean. It will bring heavy rains to parts of
Honduras and Nicaragua before turning to the northeast and crossing
Cuba next weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Pinson, Alabama established a new record high
for the date with a temperature of 87F. Other locations in the Heart
of Dixie tied their record highs for the date, including Birmingham
(84F), Anniston (84F), and Montgomery (85F).

...Another Great Fall Day...

Another refreshing morning across North and Central Alabama on this
first Sunday of November. Some lows across the area included: 33 at
Decatur, 35 at Tuscaloosa, 36 at Fort Payne and Anniston, 37 at Selma,
39 at Cullman and Montgomery and 40 at Birmingham, Calera and
Huntsville.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Bright blue skies and bright sunshine rule the day
across Alabama. Temperatures will warm again into the 70s this
afternoon. Tonight will be another clear, calm night with lows mostly
in the 40s. Cooler spots will register in the 30s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: That big upper low is over the northern Gulf, but it
is starved for moisture. It was producing some clouds over Southeast
Alabama this morning, but as the low moves east, they should follow it
into Georgia and the Carolinas. It will open up into a broad upper
trough. Meanwhile, a low will form over the Bahamas tomorrow and move
toward the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Some clouds could work their
way back into eastern sections of Alabama thanks to the upper low, but
precipitation will stay well to our east. We will stay dry through at
least Wednesday. Meanwhile, a big storm system over the west will
move slowly eastward. It will produce severe weather from Texas to
Iowa on Wednesday. The severe weather area will shift eastward as far
as Mississippi on Thursday. But it should weaken before it brings
showers and storms to Alabama late on Thursday and into Friday, and we
don't expect severe weather in Alabama. Showers and storms will exit
on Friday and set the stage for a dry and slightly cooler weekend.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Drought conditions have improved slightly in the
past week across Alabama. On this week's drought monitor, the
northeastern 10% of the state is in drought condition. This is a
slight improvement over a week ago. The biggest week over week
improvement came in the area considered to be abnormally dry. One
week ago, 79% of the state was abnormally dry. This week, it is down
to 62%. The week's rainfall will hopefully hold the drought at bay
until some better rainfall
chances arrive late in the following week.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is all quiet at this time. Sea
surface temperatures are warm over the Caribbean and wind shear will
be decreasing this week, so that is the region we would look to for
tropical cyclone development. That is consistent with climatology.
We are in the inactive phase of the MJO (Madden Julian Oscillation)
right now across the Atlantic. The active phase of the MJO is
strongly correlated with tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic.
It points to the chance for better development possibilities during
last two weeks of the month as the MJO becomes active.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Forecasters at the National Hurricane were
faced with a serious dilemma. Hurricane Michelle was strengthening
over the northwestern Caribbean. The official forecast carried the
storm over Cuba and out through the Bahamas, sparing South Florida.
But one computer model was an outlier, taking the category three
hurricane into South Florida. But NHC Director Max Mayfield was
nonplussed by the second guessers. He always said that the
specialists at the center are "born for their jobs." The forecast
turned out to be a good one, as Michelle stayed south of the Florida,
crossing Cuba south of Havana.

...Gorgeous Day Ahead...

Did you remember to set your clock back an hour this morning? If you
didn't, you will be early to everything. And you will have missed out
on the extra hour of sleep you lost in the spring. It's back to
Standard Time.

BEAUTIFUL FALL WEATHER CONTINUES: Another wonderful fall day is
underway across Alabama. After another morning with lows in the 30s
and 40s, crystal clear blue skies will rule the day. With lots of
sunshine and dry air, temperatures will warm nicely into the lower and
middle 70s. Perfect weather for outdoor activities this afternoon.
The only problem is that the afternoon will be a little shorter today,
so get an early start! This same basic weather will continue into
Wednesday across Central Alabama.

END OF WEEK/WEEKEND: The big western system will lumber out onto the
Plains by Wednesday, with a strong surface low moving through Kansas
and Nebraska. A decent warm sector will set up from Texas to Iowa,
and severe weather will be possible in this area on Wednesday. By
Thursday morning, the cold front will be knocking on the door of
Northwest Alabama, and showers and storms will enter the state during
the day. As the system lifts quickly out to the northeast, it will
take the dynamics with it, and the threat of severe weather for us
will be lessened.

Out main hope is to get some decent rainfall amounts. It has been dry
lately and the rainfall surplus at Birmingham is dwindling. It looks
like most areas will see between one half and one inch of rain before
the rain ends early Friday morning. It will set the stage for a
cooler and dry weekend.

SKY SHOW AGAIN TONIGHT: If you look to the west at sunset tonight,
you will likely gasp at the three bright celestial jewels adorning the
sky. Jupiter, a slender crescent moon and brilliant Venus will be
stretched out like a string of pearls.

NOTES FROM ALL OVER: Big storm system out west. Winter storm
warnings are in effect for the Sierras of California, where snow
levels are expected to drop to about 6500 feet today. Up to two feet
of snow is expected at the highest elevations, including important
mountain passes. Winds will gust to over 50 mph. The same system
also prompted flash flood warnings in the burn areas of Southern
California where wildfires have denuded hillsides of vegetation.

NEW YORK MARATHON: The New York City Marathon will travel across all
five boroughs today. On this date in 2003, abnormally warm weather
brought out extra large crowds of spectators
for the New York City Marathon, but it took its toll on the runners.
About twenty runners were taken to local hospitals because of
dehydration. The high for the day was 68°F. Today's weather will be
much more suited for the race. The expected high in the Big Apple is
only 52 degrees today.

ALSO IN 2003 The mercury soared to 85F at the Birmingham airport to
establish a new record for the date. In nearby Pinson, the high
reached 88F, also a record for the date. The readings represented
marks for the highest temperatures ever for so late in the season at
both locations. The 85F at Birmingham was a new November record.
