...Milder Today...

GOOD MORNING! The official temperature at Birmingham only reached 45F on
Saturday as northwesterly winds funneled in lots of cold air. Those winds
will reverse around to the southwest today, and with a decent supply of
sunshine, temperatures will warm in to the 5os today. Clouds will thicken
this evening, with cloudy skies and a slight chance of a shower before
morning.

HOLIDAY WEATHER: As we celebrate the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. on Monday, the atmosphere over Alabama will begin to become
unstable. Temperatures will warm to near 60 degrees, and a few showers and
storms may form during the day. Am area of showers and storms will move
into West Alabama during the overnight hours. The storms will continue on
Tuesday. Some of those storms could be strong to severe, especially
Tuesday.

MIDWEEK WEATHER: The storm system should move out Wednesday, but showers
could linger through the morning hours. It will be windy and raw with
temperatures holding in the 40s. It could even be cold enough for a few
snow flurries. Thursday should be a nice day with a good deal of sunshine.
Friday will feature increasing moisture and clouds.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEKEND: Low pressure will bring another chance of showers
by Saturday night, lasting into Sunday. The rain should end Sunday night.

PLAINS GRASSFIRES: Red Flag Warnings are in effect across southern
Oklahoma and Northwest Texas today as the combination of severe drought,
strong southwesterly winds and very low humidifies produce an extreme fire
danger.

ON THIS DATE IN 1958: There have been four hurricane reconnaissance planes
lost since the practice was started in the mid 1940s. Three have been lost
in the Pacific, one in the Atlantic. A WB-50 from the 54th Weather
Reconnaissance Squadron on Guam was lost during Supertyphoon Ophelia
southwest of Guam.

GREETINGS FROM INDY: A good bit of clouds still covered the northeaster
quarter of Alabama this afternoon as temperatures are struggling through the
30s and 40s. Combined with the strong northwesterly winds, averaging 10-20
mph with occasional gusts over 30 mph, it is quite an uncomfortable day.
Those winds will diminish late this afternoon. Under clear and calm
conditions, temperatures will drop to below freezing in most locations
overnight. Expect lows in the upper 20s in most locations, with normally
colder places making the middle 20s.

IMPROVEMENT SUNDAY: Conditions will be much nicer tomorrow as
temperatures will warm some 10-15 degrees over today's readings. Skies will
start out sunny and become partly cloudy tomorrow morning. They might even
be cloudy by dark as winds shift around to the southwest and south and
moisture levels start to rise. It is even conceivable that we could see a
shower during the pre-dawn hours on Monday.

STORMY START: By early Monday morning, low pressure to the west of
Alabama will be pushing a warm front north over the Tennessee Valley. It
will be a breezy day as strong southerly winds develop ahead of the low. A
line of showers and thunderstorms will form during the day and slowly edge
into Alabama overnight. There are hints that a secondary low might develop
over South Alabama on Tuesday, moving slowly north northeastward and
prolonging the rainfall. Rainfall amounts will be decent with this system,
averaging about one and one half inches in most locations with some locally
higher amounts.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: Wednesday will be another raw day with strong
northwesterly winds and temperatures holding steady in the 40s. Wednesday
night will be a cold one, but Thursday should see a nice warm up with high
pressure in charge. Friday will be a transition day, with southerly winds
returning as we get ready for the next episode in the parade of low pressure
systems that have been marching across the country for the past few weeks.

EASTERN STORM: Heavy Snow Warnings are in effect through tonight over the
mountains of eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia, where 3-6 inches
of snow will be possible at elevations above 2500 feet. Snow advisories
have been cancelled for the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee, where one inch
of snow may still fall. Two to six inches of snow is possible across West
Virginia and Maryland. Winter Storm Watches are in effect across the
northern Adirondacks, where over six inches of snow may fall.

WESTERN STORM: The storm over the West Coast will bring severe winter
conditions to that region today and tomorrow. Winter Storm Warnings are in
effect over the Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi Mountains of California,
including Yosemite, where up to fifteen inches of snow will fall. A Winter
Weather Advisory is in effect for the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura
County today with three to seven inches of snow may fall above 5000 feet.
Over the beautiful San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado, up to one to
two feet of snow is expected in the higher elevation locations like Wolf
Creek Pass tomorrow. Eight to sixteen inches of snow is expected in
Telluride, Colorado, one of the most spectacular places on Earth.

ONE YEAR AGO: Five skiers were killed by a massive avalanche in the
backcountry near Park City, Utah. The area had been marked off limits to
skiers because of the threat of avalanches. The skiers were buried under
thirty feet of snow. Two weeks of heavy, wet snow made for perfect
avalanche conditions. Eleven people had already died in Utah avalanches
during the season. The previous high for any winter was six.

...Sunny, But windy and Cold...

GREETINGS FROM INDIANAPOLIS: This morning's forecast package come to you
from the capital of Indiana. The home of the Indianapolis Colts. And a
little race on Memorial Day weekend.

SNOW HERE, SNOW THERE: It was nice to see snow falling here last night. A
few locations back home in Alabama have seen some snow flurries overnight
and this morning.

WINDY SATURDAY: Strong northwesterly winds will continue across the area
today in the wake of the cold front that passed through the area yesterday.

Those winds will average 15-25 mph today with frequent gusts over 30 mph.
Wind advisories are in effect. Be cautious if you are driving high profile
vehicles or operating a boat. The winds will diminish tonight.

QUICK MODERATION: Skies will clear from the west today, but temperatures
will not make it out of the 40s. Readings will warm into the 50s tomorrow.
A solid return flow will begin Sunday night, increasing moisture levels.

STORMY START: Next week will start off stormy with a good chance of storms
Monday night into Tuesday, when they could be severe. Rain and storms will
be with us through at least part of Wednesday. A cold front will move
through then, leading to nice weather for the end of the week.

SEATTLE RECORD WATCH: It has rained for 26 straight days in Seattle. The
all time record there is 33 days. Could they actually tie or break the
record. In fact, it looks highly likely. There is a chance of rain very
day for the next seven days in the damp city.

ON THIS DATE IN 1910: The luxury liner Lusitania, which would be torpedoed
by the Germans in 1915, was struck by an eighty foot wave that heavily
damaged the ship as it made its way from Liverpool to New York City. The
storm that caused the high wave also produced blizzard conditions on the
East Coast, including New York City, where fifteen inches of snow fell.

JANUARY ACTING MORE LIKE MARCH: Sure seems like March out in the countryside
this afternoon with increasing NW winds as colder air pours into the area.
The colder air, of course, is following morning storminess across Alabama,
especially down south.

Too bad the weather turned tragic in at least one area. A tornado struck the
Belleville community in Conecuh County on US-84 west of Evergreen. One
fatality has been confirmed. US-84 was closed for a time due to storm debris
causing a big back up in traffic. Reports are incomplete, but 10 to 12 homes
were reported destroyed and 10 to 15 more damaged. There were also some
injuries in addition to the fatality. Otherwise, the state got by relatively
easy considering this was a moderate risk of severe weather. A number of
hail reports in the southern counties. There was little or no dangerous
weather over the north half of the state.

THE WEEKEND: If you are out tonight it is going to be blustery and a lot
colder. We could have a few light evening showers, but parts of North
Alabama will probably get a few snow flurries late tonight and early
Saturday morning. The ground is plenty warm, so absolutely no problems. Lows
by morning will be near freezing. Even though it will be clearing Saturday,
NW winds of 15 to 30 mph will not be too comfortable. Sunday should be our
better day with all sunshine and a high of 58, but a freeze starts the day
Sunday morning. The next big chance of showers and storms mainly on Tuesday
into Wednesday, but some of those may start late Monday.

YOU NEED A WEATHER RADIO: This brief story tells why. In NW Florida in the
Baker community in Okaloosa County this morning, about 15 students were
injured (minor) when the Baker School complex was damaged. Automobiles were
also damaged. The Tornado Warning was heard at the school on NOAA Weather
Radio and school officials escorted students to safe shelter.

WINTER IN THE GREAT SMOKIES: This same storm system may dump as much as 3
to 6 inches of snow in East Tennessee, including the Great Smoky Mountains.
In the high country, as much as 1 foot of snow may fall tonight and
Saturday.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: How would you like to be on the summit of Mt. Ranier
in Washington Saturday with temperatures steady at 15 below zero and 35 mph
winds?...Seattle has already received measurable rain today-the 26th day in
a row...this is a scary thought: on this date in 1903, a tropical cyclone
struck the Society Islands in the South Pacific producing a storm surge of
40 to 55 feet! 1000 died.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Out on a walk minding our own business with my
Little Miss Molly at dusk. Suddenly a noise that sounded like the beginning
of a NASCAR race at Talladega Racetrack. It was a neighbor on the other side
of the hedgerow trying out a motorized dune buggy. He raced through a wooded
area just a few yards from us. It scared Little Miss Molly so bad that she
headed home pulling me down an embankment toward our back door without even
doing her "business." She immediately sought out one of her safe places.
Later that evening, trying to take her out again, and she refused to go out
the back door. She was still afraid. I feel sorry for little animals when
they get so frightened and shake all over. Spent a lot of time consoling the
little girl. Life goes on.

...An Active weather Day...

A fast moving band of showers and thunderstorms will move across Alabama
today ahead of a very dynamic weather system in the upper atmosphere. While
the most unstable air will be over the southern half of the state, some of
the storms up this way might produce strong winds and some hail. Isolated
tornadoes cannot be ruled out, but they are most likely over the southeast
part of the state in the general area from Montgomery to Dothan.

Today will be very windy, even with no thunderstorms involved. Winds could
gust as high as 35 mph, especially on the ridge tops.
Colder air will move into northwest Alabama this afternoon, where
temperatures could fall into the 40s. That colder air will overspread the
entire state tonight, and by daybreak tomorrow most communities will be near
the freezing mark. There will be some leftover moisture, and a few snow
flurries are not out of the question tonight and early tomorrow.

The sky will slowly clear tomorrow, and with a clear sky we expect a pretty
decent freeze by early Sunday morning, when most places will be between 25
and 30 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Another strong weather system will bring our next round of
showers and storms to Alabama Monday night and Tuesday of next week. And,
another quick shot of cold air will arrive by the middle of next week.

THE RING: Lots of calls from viewers last night asking about the "ring
around the moon". That is actually a fairly common occurrence in Alabama; it
is caused by a layer of thin cirrus clouds at about 25,000 feet. Those
clouds are ice crystals, and the ice creates the ring. It usually means a
storm system is on the way.

MORE RAPID CHANGES: The weather just won't stay the same very long and
we're in for some more quick changes. Low temperatures this morning were
colder than expected. A few of the lowest reporting was 26 in Hamilton, 27
in Black Creek, 28 in Ft. Payne and Gadsden and 29 in Jasper. It will not be
near that cold tonight as SW winds will set in and this brings us some
possible dangerous weather for Friday.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the southern two-thirds of Alabama
under a moderate risk for severe weather Friday. Most of those storms will
be in the morning to early afternoon. A cold front will sweep through during
the day and it will start turning colder before you get out of school or the
work place Friday afternoon.

It will also be windy with westerly winds as high as 30 mph at times
shifting to the NW during the afternoon. Look for sharply colder weather
Friday night and we could even see a few snow flurries over about the
northern third of the state later Friday night and into the early morning
hours Saturday. Sunday looks like our only really good day for a while even
though it will be in the upper 20s to start the day. Some more showers and
thunderstorms will move in from the NW starting Monday afternoon and
becoming more numerous Monday night. So, what else is new.

IN OTHER PLACES: A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the mountains of
East Tennessee, including the Gatlinburg area for Friday evening through
Saturday afternoon. As much as 3 to 5 inches of snow may accumulate with
even 6 to 8 inches in the higher elevations...cold temperatures this morning
included 8 below zero in Yellowstone National Park and 33 below at Arctic
Village, Alaska.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED? Why Greenland is so much colder than Iceland? The
name Greenland implies greenery and pleasant temperatures and Iceland hints
at bitter cold. At midday, the coldest temperature I could find in Iceland
was 24 at Bolungavik while it was 66 below atop the ice cap in the center of
Greenland.

OUR MILD JANUARY: The average high temperature in Birmingham so far this
January has been 62.6-exactly 10 degrees warmer than normal. It is also 10
degrees warmer than the average for all of December.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Phyllis and Mike Ratliff, friends in Oneonta,
passed along some interesting news. It seems that due to the death of a
friend, they inherited a 10-year old Shih-tsu named Cissy. Mike was not that
much pro dog, but he bonded with Cissy almost immediately. They already had
a dog named Brandy and he had been with them 9 years. Cissy has already
brightened their lives. She adores Mike, even though he has never been a dog
person. Brandy loves to have Cissy to play with and to chase squirrels. Goes
to show you that those little creatures can really squeeze their way into
your heart, soul and mind. I, too, highly recommend a dog.

...A Big Warmup Today...

More fast paced weather changes are ahead for Alabama, so hang on for a
roller coaster ride. Today should be a beautiful day, with lots of sunshine
and temperatures soaring into the low 70s following a chilly morning. Then,
clouds move in tonight, and a band of showers and thunderstorms should pass
through tomorrow morning.

At this point it looks like the best chance of showers and storms will come
from about 6:00 a.m. until 12 Noon tomorrow. While a strong storm is not out
of the question a major severe weather threat is not likely due to limited
instability values and marginal wind fields. Rainfall amounts of 1/2 inch
are likely.

As the rain moves out tomorrow afternoon, colder air moves in. In fact,
temperatures could fall tomorrow afternoon over northwest Alabama in the
wake of a frontal passage. By Saturday morning, temperatures will be well
down in the 30s over the northern half of the state.

THE WEEKEND: We are now forecasting a clearing sky during the day Saturday.
If the sun does pop out, we will reach the low to mid 50s. Then, a light
freeze is likely early Sunday morning with lows between 25 and 30 degrees.

Another warming trend begins Sunday afternoon in advance of a storm system
that will bring rain and storms back to Alabama Monday night into Tuesday
morning of next week. And, once again a quick shot of colder air is likely
for the middle part of next week.

ROAMING: Yesterday was the 24th consecutive day of rain for Seattle; the
total was 1.14". There is no Amtrak train service between Portland, OR and
Canada due to a series of mudslides between Tacoma and Everett. Gunnison, CO

INDECISIVE THERMOMETER: Our official thermometer acts like it is fastened
to one of those wild rides out at Visionland and as indecisive as a 3-year
old in an ice cream parlor or toy store.

It is called a progressive weather pattern, meaning if you don't like the
weather today, wait until tomorrow.
The changing temperatures will keep us warm some days and grabbing for a
sweater others.

This afternoon a line of showers and some thunderstorms over NW Mississippi
was progressing eastward, but taking its time. They will move through our
area during the night. It may be approaching midnight when we get our best
chance of rain. Showers will end early Wednesday with clearing by afternoon.
Thursday looks like our best day in a long time with near total sunshine and
highs near 70. A stronger weather system will affect Alabama Friday and
Friday night. It is going to be windy with showers and thunderstorms and
then turning sharply colder Friday night. Could even see a few snowflakes at
some point late Friday night and Saturday morning. No problem whatsoever
since the ground and infrastructure will be quite warm. Look at our
day-by-day forecast for all the details.

A BITTER COLD MORNING IN ALABAMA: It was 2 above zero in Birmingham on this
date in 1982. Next morning it was 2 below in Birmingham. That particular
cold wave kept the Birmingham temperature below freezing for 72 hours in a
row between January 9-12, 1982. That is the longest such stretch on record.
That same massive cold wave brought the most uncomfortable weather ever
recorded to a number of places east of the Rockies. In Chicago, it was 26
below zero with a wind chill of 77 below. On that same day, the Cincinnati
Bengals played the San Diego Chargers in an NFL playoff game with a
temperature at kick off of 9 below zero.

POINTS OF INTEREST: The rain just won't stop over the Pacific Northwest.
Several more inches expected in the next few days...all that rain translates
to heavy snow in the high country. There are places that now have more than
200 inches of snow on the ground. These are not normally inhabited
areas...back on this date 206 years ago, in 1800, Savannah was covered with
18 inches of snow and Charleston 10 inches...84 in Laredo was the hottest
yesterday...18 below at Gunnison, Colorado this morning was the coldest in
the lower 48 connected states...in Alaska, it was 37 below at Kotzebue.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Much, much playing with Little Miss Molly in
the last 24 hours. The more I play, the more she expects. I can actually
turn partway around in my office chair. She hears the faint noise and comes
zooming in from the living area with a toy in her mouth ready to play. Just
don't have that much time, but I love it. A nice long walk and I am now
convinced that Winter is my second favorite season immediately behind
Autumn. The stark landscape in Winter has a beauty of its own. Maybe it is
because I like black and white photograph better than color. Life goes
on...wish I had one of those illegal brown sugar cinnamon pop tarts. Yummy,
yummy!
