INDECISIVE THERMOMETER: Our official thermometer acts like it is fastened
to one of those wild rides out at Visionland and as indecisive as a 3-year
old in an ice cream parlor or toy store.
It is called a progressive weather pattern, meaning if you don't like the
weather today, wait until tomorrow.
The changing temperatures will keep us warm some days and grabbing for a
sweater others.
This afternoon a line of showers and some thunderstorms over NW Mississippi
was progressing eastward, but taking its time. They will move through our
area during the night. It may be approaching midnight when we get our best
chance of rain. Showers will end early Wednesday with clearing by afternoon.
Thursday looks like our best day in a long time with near total sunshine and
highs near 70. A stronger weather system will affect Alabama Friday and
Friday night. It is going to be windy with showers and thunderstorms and
then turning sharply colder Friday night. Could even see a few snowflakes at
some point late Friday night and Saturday morning. No problem whatsoever
since the ground and infrastructure will be quite warm. Look at our
day-by-day forecast for all the details.
A BITTER COLD MORNING IN ALABAMA: It was 2 above zero in Birmingham on this
date in 1982. Next morning it was 2 below in Birmingham. That particular
cold wave kept the Birmingham temperature below freezing for 72 hours in a
row between January 9-12, 1982. That is the longest such stretch on record.
That same massive cold wave brought the most uncomfortable weather ever
recorded to a number of places east of the Rockies. In Chicago, it was 26
below zero with a wind chill of 77 below. On that same day, the Cincinnati
Bengals played the San Diego Chargers in an NFL playoff game with a
temperature at kick off of 9 below zero.
POINTS OF INTEREST: The rain just won't stop over the Pacific Northwest.
Several more inches expected in the next few days...all that rain translates
to heavy snow in the high country. There are places that now have more than
200 inches of snow on the ground. These are not normally inhabited
areas...back on this date 206 years ago, in 1800, Savannah was covered with
18 inches of snow and Charleston 10 inches...84 in Laredo was the hottest
yesterday...18 below at Gunnison, Colorado this morning was the coldest in
the lower 48 connected states...in Alaska, it was 37 below at Kotzebue.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Much, much playing with Little Miss Molly in
the last 24 hours. The more I play, the more she expects. I can actually
turn partway around in my office chair. She hears the faint noise and comes
zooming in from the living area with a toy in her mouth ready to play. Just
don't have that much time, but I love it. A nice long walk and I am now
convinced that Winter is my second favorite season immediately behind
Autumn. The stark landscape in Winter has a beauty of its own. Maybe it is
because I like black and white photograph better than color. Life goes
on...wish I had one of those illegal brown sugar cinnamon pop tarts. Yummy,
yummy!
