GREETINGS FROM INDY: A good bit of clouds still covered the northeaster
quarter of Alabama this afternoon as temperatures are struggling through the
30s and 40s. Combined with the strong northwesterly winds, averaging 10-20
mph with occasional gusts over 30 mph, it is quite an uncomfortable day.
Those winds will diminish late this afternoon. Under clear and calm
conditions, temperatures will drop to below freezing in most locations
overnight. Expect lows in the upper 20s in most locations, with normally
colder places making the middle 20s.
IMPROVEMENT SUNDAY: Conditions will be much nicer tomorrow as
temperatures will warm some 10-15 degrees over today's readings. Skies will
start out sunny and become partly cloudy tomorrow morning. They might even
be cloudy by dark as winds shift around to the southwest and south and
moisture levels start to rise. It is even conceivable that we could see a
shower during the pre-dawn hours on Monday.
STORMY START: By early Monday morning, low pressure to the west of
Alabama will be pushing a warm front north over the Tennessee Valley. It
will be a breezy day as strong southerly winds develop ahead of the low. A
line of showers and thunderstorms will form during the day and slowly edge
into Alabama overnight. There are hints that a secondary low might develop
over South Alabama on Tuesday, moving slowly north northeastward and
prolonging the rainfall. Rainfall amounts will be decent with this system,
averaging about one and one half inches in most locations with some locally
higher amounts.
MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: Wednesday will be another raw day with strong
northwesterly winds and temperatures holding steady in the 40s. Wednesday
night will be a cold one, but Thursday should see a nice warm up with high
pressure in charge. Friday will be a transition day, with southerly winds
returning as we get ready for the next episode in the parade of low pressure
systems that have been marching across the country for the past few weeks.
EASTERN STORM: Heavy Snow Warnings are in effect through tonight over the
mountains of eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia, where 3-6 inches
of snow will be possible at elevations above 2500 feet. Snow advisories
have been cancelled for the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee, where one inch
of snow may still fall. Two to six inches of snow is possible across West
Virginia and Maryland. Winter Storm Watches are in effect across the
northern Adirondacks, where over six inches of snow may fall.
WESTERN STORM: The storm over the West Coast will bring severe winter
conditions to that region today and tomorrow. Winter Storm Warnings are in
effect over the Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi Mountains of California,
including Yosemite, where up to fifteen inches of snow will fall. A Winter
Weather Advisory is in effect for the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura
County today with three to seven inches of snow may fall above 5000 feet.
Over the beautiful San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado, up to one to
two feet of snow is expected in the higher elevation locations like Wolf
Creek Pass tomorrow. Eight to sixteen inches of snow is expected in
Telluride, Colorado, one of the most spectacular places on Earth.
ONE YEAR AGO: Five skiers were killed by a massive avalanche in the
backcountry near Park City, Utah. The area had been marked off limits to
skiers because of the threat of avalanches. The skiers were buried under
thirty feet of snow. Two weeks of heavy, wet snow made for perfect
avalanche conditions. Eleven people had already died in Utah avalanches
during the season. The previous high for any winter was six.
