...An Active weather Day...

A fast moving band of showers and thunderstorms will move across Alabama
today ahead of a very dynamic weather system in the upper atmosphere. While
the most unstable air will be over the southern half of the state, some of
the storms up this way might produce strong winds and some hail. Isolated
tornadoes cannot be ruled out, but they are most likely over the southeast
part of the state in the general area from Montgomery to Dothan.

Today will be very windy, even with no thunderstorms involved. Winds could
gust as high as 35 mph, especially on the ridge tops.
Colder air will move into northwest Alabama this afternoon, where
temperatures could fall into the 40s. That colder air will overspread the
entire state tonight, and by daybreak tomorrow most communities will be near
the freezing mark. There will be some leftover moisture, and a few snow
flurries are not out of the question tonight and early tomorrow.

The sky will slowly clear tomorrow, and with a clear sky we expect a pretty
decent freeze by early Sunday morning, when most places will be between 25
and 30 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Another strong weather system will bring our next round of
showers and storms to Alabama Monday night and Tuesday of next week. And,
another quick shot of cold air will arrive by the middle of next week.

THE RING: Lots of calls from viewers last night asking about the "ring
around the moon". That is actually a fairly common occurrence in Alabama; it
is caused by a layer of thin cirrus clouds at about 25,000 feet. Those
clouds are ice crystals, and the ice creates the ring. It usually means a
storm system is on the way.
