...Showers Ahead...

Sometime, timing is everything. Earlier in the week, the models were
forecasting that our approaching weather system would arrive much
earlier. With lots of clouds predicted during the day today, highs
would have been only in the 40s. That's what happened in Memphis,
where temperatures have struggled to
reach 50 degrees.

SHOWERS TONIGHT: Most of today will be dry. In fact, a fire weather
warning is in effect this afternoon. But a fast moving upper
disturbance and surface low are going to produce a chance of showers
late this afternoon into the evening hours as a cold front pushes
through the state quickly. Clouds will increase quickly this
afternoon and the showers should arrive in western sections before
dark. Those showers will overspread the area tonight. The duration
of rain will be about 2 hours. Rainfall amounts should be less than
one quarter of an inch. No storms should be involved. There is a
tiny chance that the rain may change over briefly to light snow over
northern sections as the rain ends and colder air moves in behind the
cold front.

SUNDAY: Skies will clear quickly after midnight tonight and skies
should be sunny by morning. Sunday will feature lots of sunshine, but
will decent cold air advection going on, highs tomorrow will struggle
to reach 50 degrees. It will be a little breezy on Sunday also. Look
for another freeze Sunday night.

MOVING INTO A NEW WORK WEEK: By Monday, the eastern trough will
still be there, but not as strong as on Sunday. Temperatures will be
in the lower 50s. Tuesday should be another dry day, with partly
cloudy skies and slowly moderating temperatures. By Wednesday, our
winds will shift around to the southeast and moisture levels will
begin to increase. Showers should stay to our west however, at least
until Thursday. By then, we will see a strong trough moving through
the upper Midwest. That will help to push another cold front our
way. The models are much slower with this feature than they were
earlier. It looks like the main rain activity will hold off until
Friday now. With the system taking a more northerly track also, it
may keep the better rain chances and rainfall amounts to our north.
It looks like the weekend will remain dry.

NATIONAL NOTES: A blue norther of sorts raced southward across the
Plains overnight. Winds gusted to 68 mph at Bushland, Texas.
Liberal, Kansas picked up a peak wind gust of 63 mph. Grass fires
were a problem in parts of the Oklahoma City metro area on Friday.
Winter storm warnings are in effect across parts of the Great Lakes
states, including Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit. It was a chilly
morning across northern Florida. Overnight lows were in the 20s from
Tallahassee to Jacksonville and down to Ocala.

ON THIS DATE IN 1918: An amazing warm-up of 83 degrees in just 12
hours at Granville, N.D. caused by a Chinook wind. The temperature
soared from an early morning low of -33F to an afternoon temperature
of 50F. Chinook winds are caused by the compression of Pacific air
descending the Rockies. Compressing the air causes it to heat up
resulting in the dramatic temperature rises.

...More Chilly Weather Ahead...

On the weather maps this morning, we find a ridge of high pressure in
the west and an intensifying trough across the nation's midsection.
This amplified pattern will become even more amplified over the next
couple of days as a big trough sets up over the eastern states. This
means more chilly weather is in store for Alabama. First we will deal
with some showers.

YOUR WEEKEND: A surface low is approaching Chicago this morning. A
cold front trails southwestward from the low. The chilly, polar
airmass lying across much of the eastern half of the nation is holding
moisture return mainly at bay. But enough moisture will be drawn
northward ahead of the front to produce a couple of hours of showers
ahead of the southeastward moving front this afternoon and evening
hours. Rainfall amounts will be light, generally less than one
quarter of an inch.

There is still a chance that the departing rains could briefly change
to light snow over northern sections late tonight, but no problems are
anticipated. Skies should clear fairly quickly after midnight, and
lows by Sunday morning will be in the upper 20s in most spots. Highs
tomorrow may not work their way out of the 40s despite near total
sunshine. Expect another light freeze Sunday night across much of the
area.

A NEW WORK WEEK: By Monday morning, a highly amplified pattern will
be in place across the country with a ridge in the middle and bookend
troughs on either side. Monday will be partly cloudy and cool with
highs only a couple of degrees warmer than those of Sunday. By
Tuesday, high pressure will continue in control of our weather. This
high will slide southeastward by early Wednesday and our winds will
turn southerly, allowing for a moderation in temperatures. Wednesday
will feature nearly seasonable conditions.

By Thursday, we will see highs in the lower 70s as a warmer, moist
airmass sets up over Alabama. Showers and storms will overspread the
state Thursday night into Friday morning. Rainfall amounts will
average less than an inch in most locations. We should be dry as we
head into the weekend. Then, there are signs that a wet period will
commence in Alabama. We can only hope.

ON THIS DATE IN 1971: Even as tornadoes swarmed the Mississippi
Valley, a huge blizzard was plaguing the Oklahoma Panhandle. The
three feet of snow at Buffalo, Oklahoma is still an all time record
for the Sooner State.

ON THIS DATE IN 1493: Christopher Columbus encountered the first of
two extratropical storms near the Azores. It was assumed for many
years that Columbus had experienced a rare winter hurricane, but
meteorologists have proven that it was more likely a non-tropical type
storm. Although both storms dealt his fleet fits, Columbus was lucky
to be in the southern semicircle of the extratropical cyclones. If he
had been in the northern part of the storms, the course of history
might have been altered.

...More Changeable Weather...

FRESH SUPPLY OF COLD AIR SUNDAY: Alabama weather is on the move,
which is not unusual at all during late winter when we head toward
spring. Springtime in Alabama seems to feature the most energetic
weather systems of all.

Therefore, this weekend we will have more changes. It will not be as
cold tonight as it was early today when most sections of the state
were below freezing. But across Central Alabama we do expect upper 20s
tonight. Some of the normally NE Alabama colder spots could easily
have 22. Changes start Saturday as some clouds move in from the SW and
west later in the day. We look for intermittent rain Saturday night.
It could start before dark. The rain should linger past midnight, but
mostly gone by daybreak Sunday. We think most of the rain will be out
of here before it gets cold enough for snow flurries. We cannot rule
out a few just before daybreak Sunday, but we believe the chance is so
slim that we left them out of the forecast. The rest of Sunday will be
mostly sunshine. Monday and Tuesday will also be dry and sunny.

Here is a short list of some of the colder temperatures this morning:

16 Remlap
18 Vernon, Russellville, Scrougout, Hanceville, Broomtown
19 McCalla, North Fork, Cullman, Moulton, Pinson
20 Marion, Crossville, Scottsboro
22 Roebuck, Coker

ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD: There is still a heavy snow pack over the
Upper Midwest. That is where our coldest temperatures came from this
morning with 25 below zero at Kadetogama, Minnesota where there is 27
inches of snow on the ground. Chicago is expecting 6 to 8 inches of
additional snow in the next 24 hours. The coldest in the Great Smoky
Mountain National Park this morning was 3 below where there was 2
inches of snow on the ground. In Alaska, the coldest this morning was
23 below at Kivalina. The real bitter cold is temporarily absent from
Alaska. There are many parts of the world where fresh drinkable water
is becoming exceedingly scarce. The Middle East is generally dry. In
Iraq, however, an aquifer is highly productive over the NE and the
eastern third of that country and most of the rest of Iraq has a
moderately productive aquifer.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has been scooting
around looking for hiding places today because of carpet cleaners and
the whirring machines. That little rascal only let me get two sips of
coffee this morning before she ordered me out of the house for a half-
mile walk. Even though she can choose inopportune times to make me go
outside, I always enjoy it. It was before sunrise and the atmosphere
was so clear that the Old Crow Motel stood out like a sharply defined
skeleton. Life goes on even though not compatible with my timetable at
times.

...Alabama Weather Relatively Quiet...

ANOTHER DAY OF SUNSHINE: For the second day in a row, it should be
almost all sunshine across Alabama. Thursday was a sparkling clear day
and a huge contrast to the stormy weather of Wednesday. The National
Weather Service in Birmingham did some storm surveys yesterday, mostly
in East Alabama. They ran out of time and may finish the job today.
There were no fatalities in Alabama, but according to news reports,
Georgia had 1 tornado fatality. This means that so far in 2009 nine
people have been killed by tornadoes in the USA. Eight of those died
in a single tornado in Carter County, Oklahoma on February 10. Last
year, there were 7 fatalities in January and 59 in February with a
total of 125 for the entire year. We do not know what kind of tornado
season we will have in Alabama this year. The prime season is March,
April and May, which means that it could start up as early as a week
from now.

STORM ALERT 2009: The next installment is next Thursday night,
February 26, at the Cullman County Civic Center. As usual, the doors
open at 5:00, the program kicks off at 7:00 and you are out of there
by 8:15. There are some quizzes and some prizes and the weather team
will present an excellent program on tornadoes and what you should do.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Extreme temperatures across the lower 48 states
yesterday included 28 below zero at International Falls, Minnesota.
The final high was not available at publication time, but West Palm
Beach had a high of 84 and Miami 85. In the Rio Grande Valley of South
Texas where some stations reported low 90s a few days ago, the warmest
yesterday was 84 at McAllen. The strong to severe thunderstorms that
moved across Alabama Wednesday seemed to grow even stronger when they
crossed over into Georgia. There were several reports of extremely
large hail. Even in Alabama we had a report of some softball-size
hail near Anniston.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the first time in two days, Molly
finally had an opportunity to play ball. Usually when we neglect her,
she will create a ballgame on her own. She has about 7 or 8 balls to
play with and she will grab them, run through the living area, and
sling them everywhere hoping someone will take the cue. That is her
favorite pastime. You would think that a little creature like that
would outgrow her interest, but she has been an avid baseball player
for most of her six years here on earth. Life goes on.

...Never A Dull Moment...

ANOTHER FREEZE TONIGHT: I would not want to live on an island in the
middle of the Pacific where the low temperature every night was around
80 and the high around 88. That would get boring in less than a week.

Instead, I like my spot here in North Central Alabama where we can
expect almost constant changes in the weather except in summer. It
gets boring again in summer with the humidity, haze and heat.

So, here we go with more changes. After the very active weather day
yesterday, it is back to a change to colder with a general freeze over
much of the state by morning. There was a great sparkle in the air
today following the storms of yesterday. Look for another day of full
sunshine Friday. Low temperatures tonight will be generally in the mid
20s across Central Alabama. However, dew points will be rather low
again so do not be one bit surprised to hear of some 18-degree lows in
the those traditional cold spots of NE Alabama.
Clouds will increase on Saturday. There is a chance of some mostly
light rain by afternoon but more so at night. Meanwhile, still another
cold front will come down the pike late Saturday night. As the light
rain tries to end Sunday morning, it could change to a few flurries
during the early morning, but then clearing, breezy and colder. No
snowstorm out of this and temperatures will be back into the mid 20s
by Monday morning.

THE WEDNESDAY STORMS: No telling how many Severe Thunderstorm and
Tornado Warnings were issued yesterday. It was a large number. This
severe weather event brought 117 reports of hail--27 of those in
Alabama. There were 16 reports of high wind and 6 reports of tornadoes
(most of those were in South Georgia). One media report indicated 1
fatality and 16 injuries in an overnight tornado in Georgia.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 87 was the Wednesday high for the nation in
Harlingen, Texas and the morning low was minus 28 at International
Falls, Minnesota. Some impressive snow in Utah. 28 new inches at Alta,
a ski resort in the Wasatch Mountains. They had 111 inches on the
ground this morning. The latest storm system brought 18 inches of new
snow to Layton and Ogden and 34 inches to New Eden. We are now in a
quiet period nationally with no outlook for any severe thunderstorms
for the next 3 days anywhere.

STORM ALERT 2009: This will be a big one tonight at the Oxford Civic
Center in the Anniston area, especially since some of the worst of the
storms yesterday were in that area. There was one report of hail with
the size of softballs. In Oxford tonight, the doors open at 5:00. The
program by the 33/40 weather team starts at 7:00. Take it from me it
is very interesting and informative. They try to get you on the way
home by 8:15. There are even some prizes.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was more tired last night than ever
before on a February 18. I took Molly for a midnight walk, gave her a
treat and took
her to bed with me. Normally, she scratches out a spot on the bed,
turns around about 7 times, moans and collapses. Last night she just
sat on the bed and glared at me and kept looking at the bedroom door.
Translation: Big guy, you did not play with me any today and I resent
it. This afternoon I will play with her so much that she will yell
uncle. Life goes on.

...TORNADO WATCH UNTIL 8 PM FOR THE ALL OF NORTH AND CENTRAL ALABAMA...

While Moderate Risk severe weather outlook areas are not extremely
rare, they do get our attention. They indicate the potential for more
widespread and more significant severe weather. We have a moderate
risk today across Central and South Alabama, generally along and south
of I-20. The rest of the state is highlighted in a slight risk for
severe weather.

The sun is breaking through now over parts of North and Central
Alabama increasing the instability. Thunderstorms were developing
over North Alabama early this afternoon. A line of storms will move
through ahead of a cold front later today and tonight, ending from the
threat from the west.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE: A strong surface low is over northern
Illinois this morning. We find ourselves in an increasingly warm and
moist airmass because of it. A decent amount of instability is
expected to develop over West and South Central Alabama, particularly
if we get breaks in the clouds. Upper winds are very strong, giving
us the deep shear necessary for titled storms. Unlike last week's
event, the instability could be strong enough so as not to be
overwhelmed by the strong winds. But there is not a lot of change in
direction of the winds as you go up in the atmosphere. This will
reduce the threat of tornadoes, but any that do form could be strong.
There will also be a threat for damaging winds and large hail. In
fact, there could be some good sized hail.

Storms will increase early this afternoon and for a brief window, the
instability and wind shear could be in phase enough to produce an
enhanced threat of severe weather across Alabama.

Again, we will really be looking out if the sun pops through. If that
happens, storms will have more to work with in the way of instability,
and that area will have enhanced lift because of the position of the
strongest winds in the upper atmosphere. This increases the threat of
tornadoes. The storms will congeal into a powerful squall line
overnight and widespread wind damage is possible along this line,
along with a continued threat for tornadoes into Southwest Georgia
overnight.

Needless to say, please stay tuned to a reliable source for severe
weather information through early this evening, review your safety
plan and be ready to act in case warnings are issued for your area.

TREND TO COLDER: Skies should clear toward morning with temperatures
in the middle 30s. Tomorrow will feature breezy and colder conditions
with a good supply of sun. Highs will be in the upper 40s. Look for
a decent freeze Thursday night with lows in the middle 20s on average
Friday morning. Friday will be mostly sunny after that cold start.

SATURDAY: The models have been hinting at snow for the coming
weekend. Now they have latched on to the idea a little more strongly.
While we don
t want to take our eye of the ball for today, we have to mention the
possibility of some snow light snow for Saturday afternoon and
Saturday night as a strong cold front and upper disturbance could give
us something to talk about. Let's get through today's weather first.

STORM ALERT 2009: We are coming to Calhoun County this week; our
annual severe weather awareness tour will be held at the Oxford Civic
Center tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. The doors open at 5:00, and we suggest
you get there early for a good seat. There is no admission charge, and
you will see some great Alabama weather stories, have a chance to meet
our weather team, and also have a chance of winning some great prizes.
We hope to see you tomorrow night!

PRESIDENTS DAYS KNOWN FOR SNOWS: On the Presidents Day weekend in
1979, Washington's National Airport experienced its third greatest
snowstorm ever with 18.7 inches. Twenty four years later on that same
weekend in 2003, 16.2 inches fell at National on the Presidents Day
weekend, their 6th biggest snow. That same storm gave Baltimore it
biggest snow ever with 26.6 inches.
