...More Chilly Weather Ahead...

On the weather maps this morning, we find a ridge of high pressure in
the west and an intensifying trough across the nation's midsection.
This amplified pattern will become even more amplified over the next
couple of days as a big trough sets up over the eastern states. This
means more chilly weather is in store for Alabama. First we will deal
with some showers.

YOUR WEEKEND: A surface low is approaching Chicago this morning. A
cold front trails southwestward from the low. The chilly, polar
airmass lying across much of the eastern half of the nation is holding
moisture return mainly at bay. But enough moisture will be drawn
northward ahead of the front to produce a couple of hours of showers
ahead of the southeastward moving front this afternoon and evening
hours. Rainfall amounts will be light, generally less than one
quarter of an inch.

There is still a chance that the departing rains could briefly change
to light snow over northern sections late tonight, but no problems are
anticipated. Skies should clear fairly quickly after midnight, and
lows by Sunday morning will be in the upper 20s in most spots. Highs
tomorrow may not work their way out of the 40s despite near total
sunshine. Expect another light freeze Sunday night across much of the
area.

A NEW WORK WEEK: By Monday morning, a highly amplified pattern will
be in place across the country with a ridge in the middle and bookend
troughs on either side. Monday will be partly cloudy and cool with
highs only a couple of degrees warmer than those of Sunday. By
Tuesday, high pressure will continue in control of our weather. This
high will slide southeastward by early Wednesday and our winds will
turn southerly, allowing for a moderation in temperatures. Wednesday
will feature nearly seasonable conditions.

By Thursday, we will see highs in the lower 70s as a warmer, moist
airmass sets up over Alabama. Showers and storms will overspread the
state Thursday night into Friday morning. Rainfall amounts will
average less than an inch in most locations. We should be dry as we
head into the weekend. Then, there are signs that a wet period will
commence in Alabama. We can only hope.

ON THIS DATE IN 1971: Even as tornadoes swarmed the Mississippi
Valley, a huge blizzard was plaguing the Oklahoma Panhandle. The
three feet of snow at Buffalo, Oklahoma is still an all time record
for the Sooner State.

ON THIS DATE IN 1493: Christopher Columbus encountered the first of
two extratropical storms near the Azores. It was assumed for many
years that Columbus had experienced a rare winter hurricane, but
meteorologists have proven that it was more likely a non-tropical type
storm. Although both storms dealt his fleet fits, Columbus was lucky
to be in the southern semicircle of the extratropical cyclones. If he
had been in the northern part of the storms, the course of history
might have been altered.
