...Showers Ahead...

Sometime, timing is everything. Earlier in the week, the models were
forecasting that our approaching weather system would arrive much
earlier. With lots of clouds predicted during the day today, highs
would have been only in the 40s. That's what happened in Memphis,
where temperatures have struggled to
reach 50 degrees.

SHOWERS TONIGHT: Most of today will be dry. In fact, a fire weather
warning is in effect this afternoon. But a fast moving upper
disturbance and surface low are going to produce a chance of showers
late this afternoon into the evening hours as a cold front pushes
through the state quickly. Clouds will increase quickly this
afternoon and the showers should arrive in western sections before
dark. Those showers will overspread the area tonight. The duration
of rain will be about 2 hours. Rainfall amounts should be less than
one quarter of an inch. No storms should be involved. There is a
tiny chance that the rain may change over briefly to light snow over
northern sections as the rain ends and colder air moves in behind the
cold front.

SUNDAY: Skies will clear quickly after midnight tonight and skies
should be sunny by morning. Sunday will feature lots of sunshine, but
will decent cold air advection going on, highs tomorrow will struggle
to reach 50 degrees. It will be a little breezy on Sunday also. Look
for another freeze Sunday night.

MOVING INTO A NEW WORK WEEK: By Monday, the eastern trough will
still be there, but not as strong as on Sunday. Temperatures will be
in the lower 50s. Tuesday should be another dry day, with partly
cloudy skies and slowly moderating temperatures. By Wednesday, our
winds will shift around to the southeast and moisture levels will
begin to increase. Showers should stay to our west however, at least
until Thursday. By then, we will see a strong trough moving through
the upper Midwest. That will help to push another cold front our
way. The models are much slower with this feature than they were
earlier. It looks like the main rain activity will hold off until
Friday now. With the system taking a more northerly track also, it
may keep the better rain chances and rainfall amounts to our north.
It looks like the weekend will remain dry.

NATIONAL NOTES: A blue norther of sorts raced southward across the
Plains overnight. Winds gusted to 68 mph at Bushland, Texas.
Liberal, Kansas picked up a peak wind gust of 63 mph. Grass fires
were a problem in parts of the Oklahoma City metro area on Friday.
Winter storm warnings are in effect across parts of the Great Lakes
states, including Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit. It was a chilly
morning across northern Florida. Overnight lows were in the 20s from
Tallahassee to Jacksonville and down to Ocala.

ON THIS DATE IN 1918: An amazing warm-up of 83 degrees in just 12
hours at Granville, N.D. caused by a Chinook wind. The temperature
soared from an early morning low of -33F to an afternoon temperature
of 50F. Chinook winds are caused by the compression of Pacific air
descending the Rockies. Compressing the air causes it to heat up
resulting in the dramatic temperature rises.
