===================================================================

...Greetings From Seattle...

It's off to Washington and Oregon for a week of rest and
relaxation this week. By the time you read this, we will be ready for
a day of adventure in Seattle. We will start with the Future of
Flight Aviation Center and the Boeing Tour in Everett. The assembly
plant is the world's largest single building, big enough to hold 74
football fields. I will try to keep you posted on the activities and
scenery.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: The presence of a frontal boundary to our
northwest will combine with a soupy airmass to produce a good chance
of showers and thunderstorms across Central Alabama on this Saturday
afternoon. Heavy rainfall will be possible and there is a possibility
that some of the storms will become severe, producing damaging winds.
Flooding could become a problem. A flash flood watch is already in
effect for North Alabama. Some small hail is not out of the question,
but deadly lightning is a given. Give a wide berth to these big
storms today and
stay inside as they approach and until they pass.

TOMORROW: The frontal system will likely hang up to the south of
Birmingham on Sunday, giving areas from about Clanton south a fairly
good chance of showers and storms. Storms will be isolated north of
the boundary.

PATTERN CHANGE UNDERWAY: The dreaded heat bubble will be a mere
memory over the next several days as Alabama and much of the Deep
South transitions to a northwesterly flow aloft. This northwesterly
flow will sweep our frontal boundary out of the area tomorrow. The
good news is that some drier air will flow into the area. This will
allow for a wide swing in daily temperature readings, with highs
topping out in the middle and upper 80s and lows dropping into the
60s. Humidities will be slightly lower also. Look for a rogue
thunderstorm complex to slide our way from the northwest in the upper
flow at some point this week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Tremendous rains fell in a short period across
portions of the Birmingham metropolitan area, producing significant
flash flooding. 5.88 inches of rain fell in less than an hour in the
Mountain Brook area. 4.85 inches of rain fell in an hour in nearby
Irondale.

THE SHADYSIDE FLOOD: Weather charts across the Ohio Valley on the
morning of June 14, 1990 did not portend the major flood disaster that
would occur that evening in Shadyside, Ohio. The spring had been a
wet one, and soil moisture levels were high. Lots of moisture was
present in the low levels of the atmosphere over Ohio that morning,
and the most significant weather features shown on the maps were a
stationery front lying across the Midwest and an outflow boundary
moving across Indiana from thunderstorms the night
before. The boundary would serve as a focusing
mechanism for slow moving thunderstorms that would dump 3-4 inches of
rain in just 75 minutes on the waterlogged ground, resulting in
immediate runoff. The runoff developed into a 15-20 foot high wall of
water that swept down the narrow canyons of Wegee and Pipe Creek River
near Shadyside OH, sweeping away buildings, bridges and cars. Twenty-
six people died in the flash flood. Bodies were found as far as 30

HELP US FIND "FOREVER FAMILIES"
FOR ALABAMA'S FOSTER CHILDREN

Heart Gallery Alabama helps find families for the 270+ children
currently in Alabama's foster care system who are waiting for
their "Forever Families."

Heart Gallery, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, recruits professional
photographers to capture the unique spirit of each child. They
interview the children and place their images and voices on a website
(http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com) and in traveling exhibits
throughout the state where prospective adoptive families can learn
more about them. Heart Gallery Alabama has helped find a
permanent home for 70 children.

Statistics show that children with involved fathers are more confident,
better able to deal with frustration, more likely to mature into
compassionate adults and to have a higher self esteem.

As Father's Day approaches, we ask that you consider becoming a
permanent home for a child. Or consider making a tax-deductible
donation to help our mission. Any donation will help us find
permanent homes for these children.

...Dry Weather Starts Sunday...

ANOTHER DAY OF NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND STORMS: Scattered showers and
thunderstorms roamed all over the state of Alabama yesterday and we
expect more today. For several days in a row, these thunderstorms
sometimes have moved at the speed of a mule and wagon giving them time
to dump very heavy rain over a few communities, while neighbors get
little or none. We did not have as many high wind reports and hail
reports yesterday as we did on Thursday. That is a good thing. Most of
our showers and storms today will occur this afternoon and evening.
Some drier air will creep into the state late tonight and Sunday. We
have omitted the mention of showers and thunderstorms for tomorrow
(Sunday). We think if any form at all, they should be well south of
the Birmingham area. After that, mostly dry weather, also for Monday
and Tuesday. Nights will be just a bit cooler with lows in the mid
60s. The humidity will also be a little lower.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: There was some good amounts, including 1.57 inches
in Rainbow City, 1.44 at Birmingham Airport, 1.00 in the Moody/Leeds
area of St. Clair County and 1.89 in the Clay/Pinson area.

BUILDING UP A RAIN SURPLUS: Birmingham Airport is sort of a surplus
island when it comes to 2008 rain amounts. Most other places have not
faired as well, however, the 1.44 inches yesterday afternoon brought
the total for June to 3.93 inches and for the year to 30.88. That is a
nice excess of 4.02 inches and almost three times as much rain as we
had at this same time last year.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We do not usually see a Little Miss
Molly story on weekends, but Bill Murray and Sally are taking a nice
(and well deserved) vacation on the Washington/Oregon coast. I feel
sure he will upload some pictures from there. Despite a real busy
Friday, I forced myself to steal some time for three vicious ballgames
with Little Miss Molly. You would think she would get enough, but the
more I play with her, the more she expects. At times last night, she
had 2 balls in her mouth at the same time slinging them at me.

...Showers/Storms Through Saturday...

A BREAK FROM STORMS EARLY NEXT WEEK: Old Mother Nature can really
make us scratch our heads at times. Here we are worried about strong
thunderstorms in Alabama, historic flooding in the Midwest, especially
Iowa, while out on the opposite side of the country 20,000 acres have
gone up in a wildfire north of Sacramento. Very dry weather continues
in that area.
Back home in Alabama, we continue to get a good dose of
showers and storms almost every day. Everyone has not benefited. At
Weaver, just north of Anniston, the 33/40 skywatcher reports a mere
0.13 so far in June. At Vigo, east of Piedmont, only 0.15. Black Creek
up in Etowah County and Vinemont in North Cullman, have been short
changed also.

WEEKEND STORMS: We believe that our best chance of
getting a good round of showers and thunderstorms will be later today,
tonight and on Saturday. Slightly drier air slips into North Alabama
on Sunday and we believe almost all of the showers and storms will be
south of I-20, but that is not sealed in stone. Monday looks dry with
mostly sunshine and also some lower humidity.

Our beloved weather models bring a weak cold front into
North Alabama on Tuesday and they hint that it could push to near the
Gulf Coast by next Wednesday before it takes a rest. Little leery of
that, but there is a chance that we could see some low temperatures by
Wednesday or Thursday morning in the upper 50s.

In yesterday's storms, over ½ inch fell near Tillmans
Corner in Mobile County. There was also ½ inch at Alexander City. Some
of the heavier amounts included 0.82 south of Wilton in
Bibb County, 1.08 in Vestavia Hills in the Birmingham area and 1.50
inches 3 miles NNW of Clanton.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Here we go roaming around the
countryside. By far, the big story is the Midwest where floods of
historic proportions are taking place in parts of several states. Last
weekend about 40 counties in Southern Indiana were listed as a
disaster area from the flooding. In the last few days, the eastern
part of Iowa seems to be the hardest hit. The flooding in Cedar Rapids
was almost unbelievable with much of the city underwater. Thousands of
families may lose everything they have and most of the city was being
evacuated…there was another scary outbreak of severe weather last
night in the Midwest. In the last 24 hours, 4.49 inches of rain at
Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. Further south, Wichita got 2.31 inches of
unneeded rain.

AT THE BEACH: Quite a few showers and
thunderstorms along the Alabama/NW Florida coast Saturday and Sunday,
but dry weather returns for Monday and Tuesday. High temperatures
consistently around 88.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We have all heard about training a dog,
but have you heard much about a dog training humans like Little Miss
Molly has trained the majority owner and myself. She has subtle little
tricks to make us do exactly what she wants. Last night in the middle
of the night, she decided she wanted an extensive belly rub. She
rolled over against the majority owner and stuck all four feet
straight up and got what she wanted. Only thing, the majority owner
fell asleep, so Molly wiggled over by me, stretched her neck as far as
it would go onto my elbow, instructing me to rub her neck. Of course,
that turned into a full tummy rub that lasted for about 15 minutes at
about 2:00 in the morning. She is a round-the-clock little girl. She
has to be if she lives in our home. Life goes on.

...Wet and Stormy At Times...

UNSETTLED WEATHER: Alabama will remain in a very moist environment for
the next 36 hours, and our forecast package will highlight scattered
to numerous showers and thunderstorms today and tomorrow. While most
of the showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening
hours, a few nighttime and morning showers are not out of the
question. Like recent days, thunderstorms will. have the potential to
drop heavy amounts of rain in a brief time, and the storms will also
be capable of producing strong winds, small hail, and a bunch of
dangerous cloud to ground lightning. Due to the clouds and showers,
temperatures will have a hard time getting out of the mid 80s today
and tomorrow.

We believe showers and storms will become fewer in number Sunday as
drier air tries to work into Alabama, and by Monday the chance of rain
is so small that we have left it out of the forecast for now.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Scattered showers and storms will be part of the
daily forecast along the Gulf Coast through early next week; still
expect about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day with a high in the
upper 80s along the immediate coast, with low 90s inland. We note that
thunderstorms have increased a bit over the water of the Gulf of
Mexico during the past 24 hours with some hint at a broad upper
circulation, but upper air winds don't favor tropical storm formation
right now.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: More severe weather yesterday and last night
in the general area from Wichita to Milwaukee. A total of 22 tornado
reports were received in this region by the Storm Prediction Center,
along with 71 reports of high wind and 79 reports of hail. Hottest
place in the nation yesterday was Wink, Texas with 111 degrees.

IOWA FLOODING: More heavy rain for the flood ravaged state yesterday;
the total at Des Moines was 1.30". The Cedar River poured over its
banks at Cedar Rapids yesterday, forcing the evacuation of more than
3,000 homes, causing a railroad bridge to collapse and leaving cars
underwater on downtown streets. About 3,200 homes were evacuated and
some 8,000 residents displaced, officials estimated. Gov. Chet Culver
has declared 55 of the state's 99 counties as state disaster areas.
All of this rain across the nation's heart land will ultimately lead
to flooding on a long stretch of the Mississippi River in coming weeks.

ON THIS DATE IN 1984: A tremendous hailstorm at Denver. Hailstones of
up to 4 inches in diameter were measured. Vehicle damage alone was
estimated at $150 million. Damage to homes and buildings totaled $200
million. Golfball size hail pounded some areas for forty minutes!
Snowplows had to be called out to clear the roads of the hail. The
hailstones injured 20 people. Ninety percent of the houses in the town
of Limon, Colorado suffered roof damage.

...Showers and Thunderstorms...

STORMS INCREASING FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: This time of year, when a cool
front shows signs that it would like to visit Alabama, it is almost
like playing dominoes or a game of chess. It is very difficult to know
who is going to win, whether it will be a persistent hot, humid air
mass hanging on or a little relief from the humidity and a back off in
showers.

For several days, it looked like we would get a break
from showers and thunderstorms by Sunday. Now we cannot be so sure,
but we do believe that most of them will be over the south half of the
state Sunday and we have lessened the chance for Birmingham and
Central Alabama. We have left them out completely on Monday and we
believe the old dreaded, unwelcome, pesky humidity will back off a
little bit on Monday.

OUR BEST CHANCE OF GETTING WET: Showers and storms
should be rather active tomorrow and Saturday and we believe that is
our best chance of getting some substantial rain across Central
Alabama. Some of these storms could be strong and no doubt we will
have a few severe thunderstorm warnings on those two days even if we
do not have an outbreak of severe weather. It does not appear to be a
significant severe weather threat, but some communities could get an
inch or more on either of those two days, especially since the storms
will be rather sluggish in their forward movement.

Scattered thunderstorms were already developing across
Central Alabama this afternoon and already there were a few warnings
and some significant weather alerts. The thunderstorms were moving
slowly toward the NW. Yesterday afternoon they were moving slowly
also, but in several different directions as if they were confused.
How about that 2.67 inches of rain at the downtown Tuscaloosa skycam
which set off flash flooding in Tuscaloosa County? There were several
reports of quarter-size hail in NE Jefferson County.

A MIDWEST TRAGEDY: No other way to describe it,
especially when so many kids are involved. My guess is that the
tornado that struck the Boy Scout camp in extreme West Iowa last
evening will be rated an EF2 of maybe an EF3. I should not even be
speculating, because an exhaustive ground survey is really the key.
Some of the experts are calling the flooding in Iowa a 500-year flood.
For sure, it is a 100-year flood. The city of Cedar Rapids was being
evacuated when it was estimated that 100 city blocks were underwater
and most of the bridges were closed…4 inches of rain fell this morning
at Atkins, Iowa, 3.40 at Rochester, Minnesota and many places got over
3 inches. Waterloo now has an excess for the year of 15 inches…10
inches of new snow in the Grand Tetons of NW Wyoming and good snow
amounts in other areas of the Rockies, especially above 8,000 feet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Every time I read the
puppy's 10 commandments, of course I think of Little Miss Molly.
Number 8 says, "Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative,
ask yourself if something might be bothering me. You may not be giving
me the right food. I may have been in the sun too long or my heart may
be getting old or weak."…every time I go from my weather office to the
kitchen to get coffee, a distance of 40 feet, Molly either jumps out
at me with a ball in her mouth wanting to play or she is passed out in
the recliner or couch, which means I cannot resist stopping and giving
her a belly rub. You should hear the long deep moans and groans
telling me that is just what she needed. Life goes on.

...Storms Increase Tomorrow...

MORE STORMS THIS AFTERNOON: Not much change in the Alabama weather
situation today; a blanket of moist air remains in place, and
thunderstorms will begin to fire up in random locations this afternoon
during the heat of the day. Most of the storms will come from about
1:00 until 8:00 p.m., and the chance of any one spot getting wet is
only about one in three. Winds aloft remain very light, and like the
last two days the storms won't be moving much, so a few places will
see very heavy amounts of rain with potential for some localized
flooding. Also, the stronger storms can produce brief periods of
strong, potentially damaging winds (wet microbursts).

We still expect to see a general increase in the coverage and number
of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and Saturday as a surface front
approaches Alabama from the northwest (notice we don't call them "cold
fronts" this time of the year!). The stronger storms will produce
heavy rain again, and with only limited sunshine we figure
temperatures won't rise above the mid 80s.
We will need to hang on to some risk of a shower or thunderstorm
Sunday, but the most numerous ones will most likely be over South
Alabama as the air begins to slowly dry over North Alabama. The drier
air will cover much of North Alabama early next week, and at this
moment it looks like most places north of I-20 will be dry Monday and
Tuesday.

BEACH FORECAST: The daily risk of scattered showers and storms will
continue through Sunday from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores, but
no wash-out, and there will be about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each
day. The high along the immediate coast will be in the 85 to 88 degree
range, but look for low 90s just inland. Last night's SST (sea surface
temperature) at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab was 87.5 degrees. And, no
sign of any tropical storm activity in the Atlantic basin for the rest
of the week.

TROPICAL DOWNPOURS: A nearly stationary thunderstorm dropped a
whopping 2.67" at our SKYCAM location at the Tuscaloosa County
Courthouse in downtown Tuscaloosa; much of that came down in only 30
minutes, and a flash flood warning was required. Summer storms also
were severe briefly in Jefferson, Blount, Cleburne, Chilton, Shelby,
and Autauga counties. Our SKYCAM atop the Daniel Building in downtown
Tuscaloosa measured 0.75" thanks to a passing thunderstorm.

TORNADO TRAGEDY: From abc3340.com: A spokeswoman for Iowa Homeland
Security says at least four people were killed and 40 injured when a
tornado struck a western Iowa Boy Scout camp. Iowa Homeland Security
spokeswoman Julie Tack says a search and rescue team has been deployed
to the camp near Little Sioux in Harrison County. She says the camp is
covered with debris and downed trees after the tornado hit about 7
p.m. Wednesday. Tack says there were 93 campers and 25 staff members
at the camp. The campers were between 13 and 18 years old and were
attending a leadership training camp. "They were considered some of
the best in the area," Tack said.

Please call (205) 445-1293 or http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com
