...Greetings From Seattle...

It's off to Washington and Oregon for a week of rest and
relaxation this week. By the time you read this, we will be ready for
a day of adventure in Seattle. We will start with the Future of
Flight Aviation Center and the Boeing Tour in Everett. The assembly
plant is the world's largest single building, big enough to hold 74
football fields. I will try to keep you posted on the activities and
scenery.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: The presence of a frontal boundary to our
northwest will combine with a soupy airmass to produce a good chance
of showers and thunderstorms across Central Alabama on this Saturday
afternoon. Heavy rainfall will be possible and there is a possibility
that some of the storms will become severe, producing damaging winds.
Flooding could become a problem. A flash flood watch is already in
effect for North Alabama. Some small hail is not out of the question,
but deadly lightning is a given. Give a wide berth to these big
storms today and
stay inside as they approach and until they pass.

TOMORROW: The frontal system will likely hang up to the south of
Birmingham on Sunday, giving areas from about Clanton south a fairly
good chance of showers and storms. Storms will be isolated north of
the boundary.

PATTERN CHANGE UNDERWAY: The dreaded heat bubble will be a mere
memory over the next several days as Alabama and much of the Deep
South transitions to a northwesterly flow aloft. This northwesterly
flow will sweep our frontal boundary out of the area tomorrow. The
good news is that some drier air will flow into the area. This will
allow for a wide swing in daily temperature readings, with highs
topping out in the middle and upper 80s and lows dropping into the
60s. Humidities will be slightly lower also. Look for a rogue
thunderstorm complex to slide our way from the northwest in the upper
flow at some point this week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Tremendous rains fell in a short period across
portions of the Birmingham metropolitan area, producing significant
flash flooding. 5.88 inches of rain fell in less than an hour in the
Mountain Brook area. 4.85 inches of rain fell in an hour in nearby
Irondale.

THE SHADYSIDE FLOOD: Weather charts across the Ohio Valley on the
morning of June 14, 1990 did not portend the major flood disaster that
would occur that evening in Shadyside, Ohio. The spring had been a
wet one, and soil moisture levels were high. Lots of moisture was
present in the low levels of the atmosphere over Ohio that morning,
and the most significant weather features shown on the maps were a
stationery front lying across the Midwest and an outflow boundary
moving across Indiana from thunderstorms the night
before. The boundary would serve as a focusing
mechanism for slow moving thunderstorms that would dump 3-4 inches of
rain in just 75 minutes on the waterlogged ground, resulting in
immediate runoff. The runoff developed into a 15-20 foot high wall of
water that swept down the narrow canyons of Wegee and Pipe Creek River
near Shadyside OH, sweeping away buildings, bridges and cars. Twenty-
six people died in the flash flood. Bodies were found as far as 30
miles downriver. The Shadyside Flood was the most deadly and
destructive flash flood in at least ten years in the United States.

HELP US FIND "FOREVER FAMILIES"
FOR ALABAMA'S FOSTER CHILDREN

Heart Gallery Alabama helps find families for the 270+ children
currently in Alabama's foster care system who are waiting for
their "Forever Families."

Heart Gallery, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, recruits professional
photographers to capture the unique spirit of each child. They
interview the children and place their images and voices on a website
(http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com) and in traveling exhibits
throughout the state where prospective adoptive families can learn
more about them. Heart Gallery Alabama has helped find a
permanent home for 70 children.

Statistics show that children with involved fathers are more confident,
better able to deal with frustration, more likely to mature into
compassionate adults and to have a higher self esteem.

As Father's Day approaches, we ask that you consider becoming a
permanent home for a child. Or consider making a tax-deductible
donation to help our mission. Any donation will help us find
permanent homes for these children.
