GOOD AFTERNOON: Many thanks to J.B. for standing in for me last night as I
drive across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama heading home from
Shreveport. It positively felt like spring yesterday morning, as evidenced
by these high temperatures yesterday:

Dallas 79 (tied record)
Oklahoma City 77 (exceeded by 6 degrees!)
Jackson MS 74
New Orleans 75
Denver 64
Liberal KS 73
Tucumcari NM 70

Closer to home, we enjoyed some wonderful mid-Winter warmth, with the
following highs around Alabama:

Birmingham Airport 70
NWS Shelby Co Airport 70
Anniston 69
Tuscaloosa 71
Montgomery 71

THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING: Bob Dylan sang that about the turbulent
sixties. We will sing a slightly different version about those warm
temperatures we enjoyed the past couple of days.

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the winds
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be chilled to the bone.
If your warmth to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start coverin' up
Or you'll shiver like a leaf
For the temps they are a-changin'.
(Apologies to Dylan)

OUR FORECAST: Those changes will be compliments of a strong cold front
that is crossing the state this afternoon. Strong westerly and
northwesterly winds have prompted a lake wind advisory through tonight. It
may be upgraded to a wind advisory for sustained winds of 25 mph or higher
later today. Skies will clear tonight with low dropping into the middle 20s
across the area. Sunday will be a sunny, but breezy day, with temperatures
struggling to reach 40 degrees. Sunday night will be our coldest night,
with readings generally in the upper teens. Then we will begin a slow warm
up, with reading near 60 by midweek.

GOTHAM BLIZZARD: A blizzard warning continues for New York City, where
light snow was beginning just before noon. More in Weather Talk.

ON THIS DATE IN 1904: An F4 tornado leveled the northern part of the town
of Moundville in Alabama a little after midnight, killing 37 people and
injuring 63. The tornado reportedly glowed with a phosphorescent glow.
The northern part of the town was destroyed and only one building was left
standing. Bodies were blown as far as one half mile. An engineer on a
northbound Great Southern train saw the destruction right after it occurred,
and backed his train 12 miles in reverse to the town of Akron, where he sent
a telegram for help.

...Another Plunge in Temperature

Well, here we go again. Another roller coaster ride and a big change in
temperature that will eventually mean a drop of 51 degrees from yesterday's
very mild 70.

There will be some showers today, although not heavy. A major low pressure
system is consolidating north of us and will swing across the Ohio Valley
and over to near Philadelphia and Atlantic City. This will swing a cold
front through Central Alabama this afternoon bringing much colder arctic
air. We can't rule out the prospect of a few snow flurries tonight, but we
think the best chance of those would be closer to the Tennessee River and
over NE Alabama. You are going to feel the bite in the air by this afternoon
as winds shift to NW and gusting to 30 mph or more. By Sunday morning, our
temperature will be in the lower 20s and we will do good to reach 40 Sunday
afternoon. Our coldest morning will be Monday with a low near 19. After
that, a warming trend starts. The temperature reached 70 or higher over
almost all of Central and South Alabama Friday. It was in the 60s across the
Tennessee Valley.

A BAD, BAD WINTER STORM: A big part of the Northern U.S. is going to get
lambasted over the weekend by a major winter storm all the way from
Minnesota and Iowa into New England. It is by far the worst one so far this
winter. Chicago will get 6 to 10 inches of snow by tonight, but adjacent
areas of NW Indiana will get 12 to 15 inches along with very windy
conditions and blowing and drifting snow. Pittsburgh may get nearly a foot.

Same in Buffalo and Philadelphia with big snowdrifts. In New York City, a
blizzard warning is in effect for later this morning through Sunday
afternoon. They will get 12 to 15 inches of snow, but huge drifts as winds
tonight reach 50 mph. Washington, D.C. also has a winter storm warning for 4
to 8 inches. Boston will get 1 to 2 feet of snow with near blizzard
conditions and winds to 55 mph. Out on Cape Cod, winds may gust to 65! A
real n'oreaster. (Watch the 3340 weather BLOG for updates over the weekend)

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Had some quality time with little Miss Molly
Friday. We walked several times covering at least 2 miles. She enjoys being
outside so much that it's like a vacation. The nice warm sun seemed to make
her happy. Life goes on.

MUCH COLDER OVER THE WEEKEND: Big changes ahead in our weather.
Showers will start during the day Saturday and we could even have a
thunderstorm. Latest data suggests that moisture will not be that plentiful.
A couple of days ago, weather models were insisting on parts of Central
Alabama getting over 1 inch of rain. That has now been whittled down to much
lesser amounts.

A cold front was near the Alabama-Tennessee border this afternoon.
It will push a little south, but then start back north as SW winds set in
Saturday. This is due to a low pressure system passing to our north. A
stronger cold front will move into Central Alabama Saturday afternoon
bringing a major drop in temperatures. We now think it will drop into the
lower 20s by Sunday morning. With moisture so scarce, we have taken out the
mention of snow flurries. Some folks could see a few late Saturday night and
before daybreak Sunday. Skies should clear rather quickly by early Sunday
morning. The wind chill will be in the teens much of the day Sunday as north
winds gust over 30 mph at times especially during the morning. We look for a
low of 19 Monday morning and a warming trend follows that.

LOOKING ELSEWHERE: Some rather hefty snowfall expected in the Mid
Atlantic States and NE as that low pressure system moves NE. New York City
should get over one-half foot...USA extremes in the last 24 hours included
81 at Brownsville and Harlingen in extreme South Texas...bitter cold in the
NE this morning with 24 below in Fryeburg, Maine and 21 below at Saranac
Lake in Upstate New York.

ALABAMA'S 1985 DEEP FREEZE: Alabama was in the grip of a major cold
wave (that term is not used anymore) at this time in 1985. It was 11 below
zero in Huntsville and Birmingham had a low of 6 below. The bitter cold
followed ice accumulations in the extreme north. In fact, sleet and freezing
rain piled up as much as one foot in Lauderdale County and the ice was
actually scrubbing the bottom of state trooper cars. Bridges were coated
well down into Central Alabama...on this date in 1999, 87 tornadoes were
reported across the south-a one-day January record... 8 people were killed
in Arkansas and Tennessee. Hardest hit were Beebe and Little Rock in
Arkansas and Clarksville, Tennessee...I checked with a good friend in
Clarksville today. She reports that most of the damage has been
reconstructed.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: What a difference a day makes. Too
many birds to count yesterday on our morning walk, but we only saw 4 this
morning. One lone small bird was sitting in one of the upper rooms of the
Old Crow Motel back lighted by a rising sun. Little Miss Molly had a great
time, but on the way home her boyfriend, Jo-Jo, barked one time at his home
on the other side of the hedgerow. I have never seen Molly cry so bad
wanting to see him...yesterday afternoon, Molly had a great time playing
with Baxter, the newest doggie in the community. He is also a Shih-tsu and
only 8 months old...when will I ever learn? Forgot to put my semi-upscale
shoes out of reach last night, so when I got dressed this morning, I had wet
shoelaces with the plastic tip chewed off one. Had to relace and my socks
were missing. Irresistible to Miss Molly. I wanted to scold her, but I was
overruled. Life goes on.

...Much Colder by Sunday...

Temperatures should rise into the low to mid 60s across Alabama today, about ten degrees above normal for mid to late January. There will be a few cloudy periods, but the day will be dry. But, don’t get used to this nice spring-like weather, as a storm system is on the way for the weekend with some very significant changes.

TOMORROW: We will continue to mention the chance of a few passing showers tomorrow as the storm system approaches. A little thunder and lightning is not out of the question as much colder air aloft moves into the state. But, moisture is quite limited with the storm and rainfall amounts should be mostly under one-half inch.

TOMORROW NIGHT: Much colder air will move into Alabama late tomorrow night, and there is still a window for a few snow flurries from about midnight tomorrow night through 7:00 a.m. Sunday. The best chance of flurries will come across the northeast corner of the state, and even there it should not be a big deal. The moisture looks way too shallow.

SUNDAY: It now looks like the sun will return for most of the day on Sunday, but strong north winds will keep wind chill values below freezing much of the day. Temperatures will hold in the 30s despite the sunshine.

MONDAY: We expect the mercury to drop into the upper teens Monday morning, but the cold snap won’t last long. A warming trend begins Monday afternoon which will last through the rest of the week. We should be in the low 60s by Wednesday of next week.

ROAMING: Warmest places in the nation yesterday were in Texas; Brownsville and Harlingen both reached 81 degrees. Coldest was Northway, Alaska with –52.

THE ALABAMA STORY: And it’s a story of moderating temperatures only to be jerked back to reality later Saturday and into early next week. We will have some rather rapidly changing weather conditions. It won’t be as cold tonight and we will have some mild temperatures Friday and the first half of Saturday. A cold front will reach the area Saturday afternoon.

Showers will arrive ahead of the cold front on Saturday. Most of them will occur toward midday and through the afternoon. There is an outside chance of a thunderstorm, but we think most of those will be south of Birmingham. There is even a chance for some strong storms over extreme South Alabama with this system.

As the cold air starts pouring in late Saturday and Saturday night, there could be some snow flurries over the northern counties Saturday night and very early Sunday morning. They should cause no problem. Sunday is going to feel very cold with highs only in the upper 30s and north winds of 12-25 mph giving a wind chill in the teens. Our coldest temperature will come early Monday—about 19.

OLD MEMORIES: On this date in 1954, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the lower 48 was observed at Rogers Pass, Montana. It was 70 below! This is in a mountainous area west of Helena and near the summit of the Continental Divide. A friend of mine and I visited that location about three months later. We had to hike through waist-deep snow to reach an old mining cabin where two elderly miners lived and kept the official instruments. I will write a story about that one day. Quite a trip.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS: An almost summer-like 91 at Santa Ana and Los Alamitos,
California yesterday...down here where 48 of our states bump into each other, the coldest was minus 7 at Fryeburg, Maine...in Alaska, the coldest was 52 below in Northway...in McGrath, it was 44 below with a high of 40 below and 38 inches of snow on the ground...quite a story out of Raleigh yesterday when a surprise one-inch snowstorm caused all kinds of problems and a lot of people were stranded. Snow is difficult to drive on wherever you are.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A little over two years ago when I took my very first early morning walk with little Miss Molly, two old crows were perched high in a tall discombobulated tree along our walking track. They were really quarrelling. I assume they were husband and wife having a big family fight. Molly and I paused to watch it and we immediately named the old tree the Old Crow Motel. Lately birds have seemed to avoid it, but what a surprise on our morning walk today to count 42 small birds resting in the rooms (limbs). They were chirping. It sounded like a youth choir. We paused in the frost-covered grass to listen to the concert. Lo and behold, here came a flock of about 50 more small birds passing just over our heads and swirling up into the Old Crow Motel. Would have made a great photo op silhouetted in the rising sun. a distant crow was singing bass. Surely must have been a bird convention going on, but Molly was ready to move on. She had to plop down overlooking a home where her friend Mattie visits some weekends. She has been on a scrounging mood lately, plunging her nose in the frost-covered grass to see what she can find. Life goes on.

The warming trend will continue across Alabama for the next two days, with
mid 50s likely this afternoon, and readings near 60 degrees tomorrow. We
should see a few cloudy periods, but no rain through tomorrow night due to
very dry air near the surface.

WEEKEND STORM: A very strong "Alberta Clipper" type system will drop into
the deep south over the weekend, and will bring some major weather changes.
We will forecast a good chance of showers on Saturday as the surface low
deepens and passes north of us. A few thunderstorms are even possible as the
air becomes somewhat unstable.

Then, much colder air will roll into the state late Saturday night and
Sunday on brisk north winds. A deep upper trough will sweep across north
Alabama on Sunday morning, and we will mention the chance of snow flurries
due to the very cold air aloft. Moisture should be rather limited, so
problems from snow at this time are not expected around here, but a dusting
is possible across higher terrain over Jackson, DeKalb, and Cherokee
counties in northeast Alabama.

Temperatures should dip into the upper teens across north Alabama by Monday
morning of next week, but a moderating trend begins Monday afternoon that
should last into mid-week.

INAUGURATION DAY WEATHER: The weather should be dry and cold in Washington,
D.C. today for the inauguration of President Bush. Temperatures will be in
the mid 30s during the day with wind chill values below freezing. Washington
should see plenty of snow, however, by the coming weekend.

A WARM SPOT: The national hot spot yesterday was Santa Ana, CA with 91
degrees.

MORE CHANGES AHEAD: Clouds hung tougher than expected today holding our
temperature down by several degrees. Those clouds should break up overnight.
One of the coldest temperatures this morning was 18 in DeSoto State Park,
but most lows were in the 20s.

There is growing concern that the Alberta Clipper coming down from the NW
may tap into more Gulf moisture than we earlier thought. We have increased
our chance of rain on Saturday and we could even see a few thunderstorms. We
think the rain will be heavier than earlier expected and some parts of
Alabama could get about three-fourths of an inch or even more. A strong low
pressure area is expected to pass well to our NW on Saturday and move off
the Mid-Atlantic coast early Sunday. This will increase our SW winds
Saturday. The cold front (the Alberta Clipper) will move across Alabama
Saturday night bringing a sharp change to colder. We believe there will be
enough wrap-around moisture to possibly bring a dusting of snow on the
ridges of NE Alabama Saturday night and early Sunday and some flurries even
as far south as Central Alabama. Sunday looks like a blustery day with
temperatures staying in the 30s all day across the north half of Alabama.

INAUGURAL WEATHER: The ground was white with snow in Washington, D.C.
today-possibly 1 to 2 inches. Only flurries are expected for the big event
tomorrow, but the temperature may stay in the upper 30s.

WHAT'S IN A NAME: You have heard the mention of Alberta Clipper in the last
few days. Way back when, a meteorologist somewhere used that term describing
rapid moving disturbances that come down in the NW flow. The name stuck.
However, when I used to work the midnight shift at the NWS along with Bill
Herrmann and Ed Agre, we concocted some other names: Winnipeg Windbag, Fargo
Freight Train, Cheyenne Express, Manitoba Mauler and Dawson Dagger. Some of
those terms were used in weather summaries. We solved a lot of world
problems on the midnight shifts.

WEDNESDAY WANDERINGS: The worst of the cold air shifted into the NE...20
below zero this morning in Presque Isle and Fryeburg, Maine and 19 below at
Saranac Lake, New York after a high yesterday of only minus 5...in NE
Minnesota, where it was 54 below Monday morning at Embarrass, most
temperatures were 5 to 13 above zero this morning...56 below in Northway,
Alaska...warmest yesterday 88 in Santa Ana, California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The sound of woof-woof-woof awakened us
early this morning. It was none other than Miss Molly and she headed
straight to the little bell hanging on the back doorknob and whammed it
continuously. It sounded like life or death urgency. Away we went. Sitting
in the very top of the CD (Community Dog's message tree), there was a large
pot-gutted bird, maybe a self-appointed lookout. (You're supposed to know
how doggies leave "messages" on tree trunks and fire plugs.) Molly insists
sniffing all around that tree every time. After a half-mile walk, she
bounded back home for her first treat and for my fresh coffee. Life is a
pleasure. Each day is better than the day before.

After another cold start, temperatures will rise into the upper 40s across
north and central Alabama today as a brief warming trend begins. Clouds
arrive this evening, and they should keep us above freezing tonight.

While cloudy periods are likely tomorrow and Friday, we do not expect any
precipitation since the low level air will remain very dry. Temperatures
should reach the upper 50s tomorrow, and low 50s on Friday.

THE WEEKEND: A rather vigorous "Alberta Clipper" system will dive from the
Dakotas to the south Atlantic coast this weekend. Moisture will be rather
limited, but some light rain is possible on Saturday. Then, as another shot
of cold air moves in here Saturday night, snow flurries or showers are
possible over the northern third of the state. A dusting of snow will be
possible for elevations over 1,000 feet in northeast Alabama by Sunday
morning (mainly over Jackson, DeKalb, and Cherokee counties), but we don't
expect any major problems down this way if flurries or snow showers develop.
Sunday should be rather blustery, with windy and colder conditions as low
pressure depends explosively off the Atlantic coast. Temperatures on Sunday
could very well hold in the 30s all day.

HEAT WAVE: Yesterday's high in Bismarck, ND was 45 degrees, two degrees
warmer than Birmingham, and 69 degrees warmer than the Sunday morning low of
-24. Dillon, Montana warmed to a balmy 50 degrees yesterday.

NO HEAT HERE: Bitter cold air continues to cover much of Alaska; the mercury
dropped to 57 degrees below zero early yesterday in the community of Eagle.
The high in Northway, Alaska yesterday was 35 degrees below zero.

THE ALABAMA STORY: At midday, the dew point stood at an even zero
at Birmingham. That is unusual for our area. It, of course, meant that the
air was extremely dry, so if you have a raspy throat today, blame it on
that.

The dew point and temperature will be rising, but not after another
cold night. Again tonight, low temperatures will be extremely variable
ranging from the low 20s in many areas but the upper 20s on some of the
ridges. Starting tomorrow and all the way into the weekend, we expect high
temperatures between 50 and 55 with lows at night in the 30s, but above
freezing. There will be a series of disturbances coming down in the NW flow,
so we will have clouds in and out at times. Our next change of rain should
hold off until Saturday. It doesn't look like a big rain event. Let's look
at a selection of the very cold low temperatures this morning:

13 in Valley Head
14 in Mentone and Montesano Mountain (Huntsville)
15 at Mt. Cheaha, Black Creek, Russell Cave
16 in DeSoto State Park, Madison, Collinsville
17 at Pinson, Hamilton, Decatur, Huntsville Airport
18 in Ft. Payne, Moulton, Trussville
19 in Cullman, Muscle Shoals, Birmingham Airport
21 in Jasper and Anniston
22 in Tuscaloosa, Highland Home, Thomasville
23 in Selma and at Shelby County Airport
24 in Montgomery
27 in Mobile and Grand Bay

One of the most uncomfortable spots in the state this morning was on
Huntsville's Monte Sano Mountain when the temperature dropped to 14 with a
14 mph wind. This created a wind chill of 11 below zero!

SWINGING IN SARANAC LAKE: A big swing in temperature in Upstate New
York. It was 62 in Saranac Lake less than a week ago. This morning it was 18
below zero with a wind chill of 32 below. That's a swing of 80 degrees in
less than a week...if you want to really be uncomfortable, you should be in
Northern Minnesota today. There is a warming trend, but temperatures are
still well below zero with south winds gusting over 40 mph at times...in
Alaska, the coldest temperatures this morning were mostly 50 to 55 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure woke up in a hurry on my morning
walk with little Miss Molly. Quite a bite in the air and Miss Molly went
along at a fast pace. There is a big dog that barks loudly each time we go
up the track. Miss Molly ignores him, but the big dog got Jo-Jo barking on
the other side of the hedgerow. Since Molly is deeply in love with Jo-Jo,
she started whining like mad wanting to see him. With all the barking, some
crows started cawing louder. All of this mind you just as Molly had squatted
to do her business...we came back down our street and a new CC (Community
Cat) was sitting in a driveway sunning. Molly slowly walked up the driveway
with her tail wagging like a rotor blade wanting to make friends. No
response from the cat. So, Molly let out one window-rattling bark. Cat still
didn't move. Molly shifted gears and slowly backed down the driveway and
headed home ready for a treat. Just another little tiny drama in our Tiny
Corner of the World.not major by world standards but big for us. Life goes
bumping along.

After temperatures in the mid to upper teens this morning, temperatures will
rise only very slowly across the state today despite maximum sunshine. Most
communities will rise into the low 40s today, a good ten degrees below
normal for mid-January.

Temperatures will warm up into the low 50s tomorrow and Thursday, but
another re-enforcing shot of colder air will ease in here on Friday, pushing
highs back into the upper 40s.

THE WEEKEND: A vigorous disturbance will roll down in the northwest flow
aloft this weekend, and will bring clouds and the risk of some scattered
light rain to the state late Saturday and Saturday night.

These kind of weather systems are called "Alberta Clippers" because they
originate over central Canada. They usually don't have much moisture, but
can produce some fairly decent snows over the Midwest and the northeast U.S.
Some of the models suggest the clipper this weekend might squeeze out some
light snow over north Alabama late Saturday night or Sunday morning as a new
of cold air drops south into the state. At this time we don't expect it to
amount to much, but we will sure keep an eye on the situation.

Much colder air rolls in here on Sunday and Monday of next week, and
temperatures could be back in the teens by early next week.

THE ICE BOX: Embarrass, Minnesota dropped to 54 degrees below zero
yesterday. This small community is nestled in a valley between ridges that
are remnants of the oldest mountain range in North America. It now seems to
be the icebox of the nation.

In the early 1700's, French priests and voyagers travelling the waterways
labeled the area "Embara" meaning blocked, not easily navigated. There after
the area became known as the Embarrass River Valley. When the Finnish
immigrants who had begun settling during the late 1800's-early 1900's,
incorporated the area as a township in 1905, the name Embarrass was
formalized.

Elsewhere in Minnesota, Babbitt dropped to -51, and Littlefork was at -49
early yesterday morning.

...Brrr! It is cold!...

GOOD MORNING! Today marks the anniversary of two significant earthquakes
that occurred one year apart in 1994 and 1995. We discuss those in today's
Weather Talk. It is also one of our most significant holidays, as we
celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King. Birmingham was at the
epicenter of another kind of earthquake in the early 1960s. If you haven't
already read it, pick up a copy of Diane McWhorter's excellent book on the
civil rights movement in Birmingham, "Carry Me Home."

CHILLY START: Yesterday was a classic example of cold air advection in
action. Someone left the back door open, and lots of Arctic air flowed into
Alabama on strong northwesterly winds. Temperatures were heading quickly
toward the teens over parts of North Alabama at forecast deadline time.
With a persistent, brisk northwest wind continuing, wind chills were in the
teens, with a few single digits even. Temperatures today will be hard
pressed to even make 40 in some North Alabama locations. Temperatures
tonight will be a few degrees colder, with teens commonplace across northern
Alabama. Precautions should be taken for a hard freeze tonight.

REST OF THE WEEK: High pressure will provide us with dry weather through
midweek. On Wednesday, the high should move east of Alabama, allowing a
southerly flow to return. Temperatures will moderate after that. A series
of disturbances will pass to the north of the state starting on Thursday.
We will see increased clouds on Thursday, and again on Saturday, when there
will be a better chance of rain.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: A storm system, unusually strong for the time of
year, produced several tornadoes over Arkansas and western Tennessee,
killing eight and injuring 131. Damage totaled $40 million. Hardest hit
was Jackson, TN, where two separate tornadoes (one an F3, one an F4) struck
the northern and southern sections of the town. 200 homes were destroyed,
300 others damaged. Six people died in Jackson.

AIR CONDITIONER NOT NEEDED: Not much chance that you will need any cooling
in your home any time soon, but we do expect afternoon temperatures to start
moderating Tuesday and for the rest of the week. During all that time,
however, high temperatures will not get above the low to mid 50s. (See our
day-by-day forecast)

Our biggest forecast challenge is the low temperature expected tonight. We
are using 16 as an average low across North-Central Alabama. This depends
greatly on the wind. The north wind will be noticeable through much of the
night, but we think it will diminish before daybreak. If the wind holds up,
the low could be closer to 18-20. In the valleys of NE Alabama, we may see
some lows by morning in the 12-16 range. This cold air that we are
experiencing is extremely dry. We think the dew point could drop to around
zero at times tomorrow.

Playing the "what if" game, we could have gone into a deep freeze with this
arctic air mass, but the upper level wind profile (including the jet stream)
favored the worst of the cold air moving more to the NE of us. Had the upper
trough been several hundred miles further west, that deep reservoir of
arctic air would have had a straight shot at Alabama and even without snow
cover we could have had lows this morning more like 8-10 degrees.

TOO COLD FOR MOST LIVING CREATURES: Bitter cold is the word over a huge
chunk of North America. It is too cold for humans, dogs, cats, elephants,
varmints-you name it. The temperature dropped to a frigid 54 below zero this
morning at Embarrass, Minnesota. In the same general area, it was 51 below
at Babbitt and 49 below at Littlefork. Up in Alaska, the coldest in the last
24 hours was 67 below at Chandalar Lake, occurring Sunday afternoon. The
wind chill at the time was 94 below. Saturday night I noticed a wind chill
in the Yukon of NW Canada of 101 below! That makes you shiver just thinking
about it...this is a good weather pattern for lake effect snows on the east
side of the Great Lakes. The very cold air extends down into the NE and
Appalachians...it was 4 below zero on Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina this
morning...Beech Mountain had a low of zero and 3 inches of snow...Mt.
LeConte, in Smoky Mountain National Park, had 1 inch of snow on the ground
and a bitter 9 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A real bite in the air as little Miss Molly
and I walked a full half mile early this morning. She had her cute little
sweater on and even I, one of the warmest-natured guys around, had on a
light coat. We noticed an unusually large flurry of birds near the north end
of the walking track-at least 30 or 40 of them. Some were scurrying about in
the grass and others among the underbrush. Nice also to hear an old crow
entertaining us in the distance...Miss Molly doesn't mind the cold, but she
wanted to move along at a fast clip. I almost had to jog to keep up with
her. For her size (9 pounds), she undoubtedly has the strongest legs I have
ever seen. If she weighed as much as a human, I think she would be as strong
as a horse. When we got home, she found a big patch of sunlight inside the
front door and took a long sunbath. Life goes on.

===================================================================

GOOD MORNING! After forecasting mostly sunny skies yesterday, and getting
partly sunny, I am a little reluctant to bite on the mostly sunny again for
today. But at worst, it was "filtered sunlight," so we will say it again:
mostly sunny today. A vigorous upper level disturbance diving through the
base of the upper trough is to the north of Alabama this morning. This
should give the trough the kick that it needs and push the axis to our east.
This will move those pesky high clouds to the south and east of the area
today. It will also allow a strong northerly flow to set up over us. With
the back door open to Canada, some very chilly weather will invade Alabama.
You will feel those northerly winds pick up to about 15-20 mph later today.
They may gust to 25 mph at times.

CHILLY TEMPS AHEAD: Last weekend, we promised you some teens, and then
backed off that forecast. But I think you will get them Monday night. With
those winds staying up tonight, and temperatures falling well into the 20s,
wind chills readings will be in the single digits. Readings will be a few
degrees colder on Monday night as winds will be lighter. Take any necessary
precautions in preparation for a hard freeze Monday night. Over North
Alabama, Monday readings will struggle to make it very far into the 40s.

REST OF THE WEEK: Dry conditions should prevail through midweek. High
pressure responsible for the fine weather will slide east of us Wednesday,
permitting southerly winds to return along with a warm up. A line of
Alberta Clipper low pressure systems will pass to our north beginning
Wednesday. We could see an increase in clouds and maybe a stray shower on
Wednesday, and again on Friday. Then a stronger system on Saturday will
give us a slightly better chance of showers.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Heavy snow in Alaska. 64.9 inches fell in less than
two days at Valdez AK. The 47.5 inches of snow in 24 hours set a record
for Valdez. Ships in the harbor were sunk by the heavy snow.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Subzero morning lows covered a large part of the
North Central United States this morning. Subzero readings covered an area
from Idaho across Montana and Wyoming, then over The Dakotas and Nebraska,
into Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. Records were set across Montana at Cut
Bank, where it was -35F this morning. Kalispell also set a record with
-25F. South Central Canada is in the deep freeze, with morning lows colder
than -25F common.

A huge Polar vortex is located over the Hudson Bay region of Canada.
This is keeping much of the Central and Eastern United States under the
influence of a large upper level trough. The cold low will remain locked in
place for the next several days. The eastern half of the country will stay
generally cool under this pattern. .

COLD REINFORCEMENT COMING: One of those long wave troughs will be
rotating through the South over the next couple of days. This will deliver
a reinforcing shot of cold air to our area tomorrow. Lows Monday morning
and Tuesday morning are going to be even chillier that earlier thought.
Many areas of North Alabama will see teens Sunday night. Readings will
still range from 18-23 degrees across the area Monday night. All interests
across North and Central Alabama should make necessary preparations for a
hard freeze. Daytime highs on Sunday will be in the upper 40s to near 50
degrees. Monday highs may struggle to make it very far into the 40s. After
this little cold spell, readings will return to near or just above normal
levels through the end of the week.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE: Dry conditions should prevail through at least
Wednesday. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly sunny at worst during the
next five days. A vigorous low pressure system will bring snows to the
Great Lake and New England by on Wednesday and Thursday. This system could
spread a few showers out way on Thursday, but this looks iffy at best. By
Friday, another trough will be rotating our way around the big Polar vortex.
This trough will sweep through on Friday, giving momentum to a front that
will push into Alabama late on Friday and Saturday. We may see a chance of
showers overnight Friday night and into Saturday.

UTAH AVALANCHE TRAGEDY: Searchers continue to look for five people
feared dead after an avalanche in backcountry near Park City, Utah. They
were skiing in an area marked out-of-bounds because of the threat of
avalanches. Already, eleven people have died in avalanches in Utah this
year. The most ever recorded in any winter was six. That is since records
started in 1951.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Heavy rains finally brought Australia's
worst bushfire crisis in 8 years to an end, dousing the remaining fires that
have been burning near Sydney since Christmas Day. Over 1.25 million acres
burned during the fires, many of which were started by arsonists. 121 homes
were destroyed by the fires. Damage totaled over $36 million with
firefighting costs pegged at over $70 million. Fires are a natural part of
the life cycle in the Australian bush, as fires crack the seedpods of
Eucalyptus and other trees, allowing them to regenerate.
