AIR CONDITIONER NOT NEEDED: Not much chance that you will need any cooling
in your home any time soon, but we do expect afternoon temperatures to start
moderating Tuesday and for the rest of the week. During all that time,
however, high temperatures will not get above the low to mid 50s. (See our
day-by-day forecast)

Our biggest forecast challenge is the low temperature expected tonight. We
are using 16 as an average low across North-Central Alabama. This depends
greatly on the wind. The north wind will be noticeable through much of the
night, but we think it will diminish before daybreak. If the wind holds up,
the low could be closer to 18-20. In the valleys of NE Alabama, we may see
some lows by morning in the 12-16 range. This cold air that we are
experiencing is extremely dry. We think the dew point could drop to around
zero at times tomorrow.

Playing the "what if" game, we could have gone into a deep freeze with this
arctic air mass, but the upper level wind profile (including the jet stream)
favored the worst of the cold air moving more to the NE of us. Had the upper
trough been several hundred miles further west, that deep reservoir of
arctic air would have had a straight shot at Alabama and even without snow
cover we could have had lows this morning more like 8-10 degrees.

TOO COLD FOR MOST LIVING CREATURES: Bitter cold is the word over a huge
chunk of North America. It is too cold for humans, dogs, cats, elephants,
varmints-you name it. The temperature dropped to a frigid 54 below zero this
morning at Embarrass, Minnesota. In the same general area, it was 51 below
at Babbitt and 49 below at Littlefork. Up in Alaska, the coldest in the last
24 hours was 67 below at Chandalar Lake, occurring Sunday afternoon. The
wind chill at the time was 94 below. Saturday night I noticed a wind chill
in the Yukon of NW Canada of 101 below! That makes you shiver just thinking
about it...this is a good weather pattern for lake effect snows on the east
side of the Great Lakes. The very cold air extends down into the NE and
Appalachians...it was 4 below zero on Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina this
morning...Beech Mountain had a low of zero and 3 inches of snow...Mt.
LeConte, in Smoky Mountain National Park, had 1 inch of snow on the ground
and a bitter 9 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A real bite in the air as little Miss Molly
and I walked a full half mile early this morning. She had her cute little
sweater on and even I, one of the warmest-natured guys around, had on a
light coat. We noticed an unusually large flurry of birds near the north end
of the walking track-at least 30 or 40 of them. Some were scurrying about in
the grass and others among the underbrush. Nice also to hear an old crow
entertaining us in the distance...Miss Molly doesn't mind the cold, but she
wanted to move along at a fast clip. I almost had to jog to keep up with
her. For her size (9 pounds), she undoubtedly has the strongest legs I have
ever seen. If she weighed as much as a human, I think she would be as strong
as a horse. When we got home, she found a big patch of sunlight inside the
front door and took a long sunbath. Life goes on.
