GOOD AFTERNOON: Many thanks to J.B. for standing in for me last night as I
drive across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama heading home from
Shreveport. It positively felt like spring yesterday morning, as evidenced
by these high temperatures yesterday:

Dallas 79 (tied record)
Oklahoma City 77 (exceeded by 6 degrees!)
Jackson MS 74
New Orleans 75
Denver 64
Liberal KS 73
Tucumcari NM 70

Closer to home, we enjoyed some wonderful mid-Winter warmth, with the
following highs around Alabama:

Birmingham Airport 70
NWS Shelby Co Airport 70
Anniston 69
Tuscaloosa 71
Montgomery 71

THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING: Bob Dylan sang that about the turbulent
sixties. We will sing a slightly different version about those warm
temperatures we enjoyed the past couple of days.

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the winds
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be chilled to the bone.
If your warmth to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start coverin' up
Or you'll shiver like a leaf
For the temps they are a-changin'.
(Apologies to Dylan)

OUR FORECAST: Those changes will be compliments of a strong cold front
that is crossing the state this afternoon. Strong westerly and
northwesterly winds have prompted a lake wind advisory through tonight. It
may be upgraded to a wind advisory for sustained winds of 25 mph or higher
later today. Skies will clear tonight with low dropping into the middle 20s
across the area. Sunday will be a sunny, but breezy day, with temperatures
struggling to reach 40 degrees. Sunday night will be our coldest night,
with readings generally in the upper teens. Then we will begin a slow warm
up, with reading near 60 by midweek.

GOTHAM BLIZZARD: A blizzard warning continues for New York City, where
light snow was beginning just before noon. More in Weather Talk.

ON THIS DATE IN 1904: An F4 tornado leveled the northern part of the town
of Moundville in Alabama a little after midnight, killing 37 people and
injuring 63. The tornado reportedly glowed with a phosphorescent glow.
The northern part of the town was destroyed and only one building was left
standing. Bodies were blown as far as one half mile. An engineer on a
northbound Great Southern train saw the destruction right after it occurred,
and backed his train 12 miles in reverse to the town of Akron, where he sent
a telegram for help.
