MUCH COLDER OVER THE WEEKEND: Big changes ahead in our weather.
Showers will start during the day Saturday and we could even have a
thunderstorm. Latest data suggests that moisture will not be that plentiful.
A couple of days ago, weather models were insisting on parts of Central
Alabama getting over 1 inch of rain. That has now been whittled down to much
lesser amounts.

A cold front was near the Alabama-Tennessee border this afternoon.
It will push a little south, but then start back north as SW winds set in
Saturday. This is due to a low pressure system passing to our north. A
stronger cold front will move into Central Alabama Saturday afternoon
bringing a major drop in temperatures. We now think it will drop into the
lower 20s by Sunday morning. With moisture so scarce, we have taken out the
mention of snow flurries. Some folks could see a few late Saturday night and
before daybreak Sunday. Skies should clear rather quickly by early Sunday
morning. The wind chill will be in the teens much of the day Sunday as north
winds gust over 30 mph at times especially during the morning. We look for a
low of 19 Monday morning and a warming trend follows that.

LOOKING ELSEWHERE: Some rather hefty snowfall expected in the Mid
Atlantic States and NE as that low pressure system moves NE. New York City
should get over one-half foot...USA extremes in the last 24 hours included
81 at Brownsville and Harlingen in extreme South Texas...bitter cold in the
NE this morning with 24 below in Fryeburg, Maine and 21 below at Saranac
Lake in Upstate New York.

ALABAMA'S 1985 DEEP FREEZE: Alabama was in the grip of a major cold
wave (that term is not used anymore) at this time in 1985. It was 11 below
zero in Huntsville and Birmingham had a low of 6 below. The bitter cold
followed ice accumulations in the extreme north. In fact, sleet and freezing
rain piled up as much as one foot in Lauderdale County and the ice was
actually scrubbing the bottom of state trooper cars. Bridges were coated
well down into Central Alabama...on this date in 1999, 87 tornadoes were
reported across the south-a one-day January record... 8 people were killed
in Arkansas and Tennessee. Hardest hit were Beebe and Little Rock in
Arkansas and Clarksville, Tennessee...I checked with a good friend in
Clarksville today. She reports that most of the damage has been
reconstructed.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: What a difference a day makes. Too
many birds to count yesterday on our morning walk, but we only saw 4 this
morning. One lone small bird was sitting in one of the upper rooms of the
Old Crow Motel back lighted by a rising sun. Little Miss Molly had a great
time, but on the way home her boyfriend, Jo-Jo, barked one time at his home
on the other side of the hedgerow. I have never seen Molly cry so bad
wanting to see him...yesterday afternoon, Molly had a great time playing
with Baxter, the newest doggie in the community. He is also a Shih-tsu and
only 8 months old...when will I ever learn? Forgot to put my semi-upscale
shoes out of reach last night, so when I got dressed this morning, I had wet
shoelaces with the plastic tip chewed off one. Had to relace and my socks
were missing. Irresistible to Miss Molly. I wanted to scold her, but I was
overruled. Life goes on.
