After temperatures in the mid to upper teens this morning, temperatures will
rise only very slowly across the state today despite maximum sunshine. Most
communities will rise into the low 40s today, a good ten degrees below
normal for mid-January.

Temperatures will warm up into the low 50s tomorrow and Thursday, but
another re-enforcing shot of colder air will ease in here on Friday, pushing
highs back into the upper 40s.

THE WEEKEND: A vigorous disturbance will roll down in the northwest flow
aloft this weekend, and will bring clouds and the risk of some scattered
light rain to the state late Saturday and Saturday night.

These kind of weather systems are called "Alberta Clippers" because they
originate over central Canada. They usually don't have much moisture, but
can produce some fairly decent snows over the Midwest and the northeast U.S.
Some of the models suggest the clipper this weekend might squeeze out some
light snow over north Alabama late Saturday night or Sunday morning as a new
of cold air drops south into the state. At this time we don't expect it to
amount to much, but we will sure keep an eye on the situation.

Much colder air rolls in here on Sunday and Monday of next week, and
temperatures could be back in the teens by early next week.

THE ICE BOX: Embarrass, Minnesota dropped to 54 degrees below zero
yesterday. This small community is nestled in a valley between ridges that
are remnants of the oldest mountain range in North America. It now seems to
be the icebox of the nation.

In the early 1700's, French priests and voyagers travelling the waterways
labeled the area "Embara" meaning blocked, not easily navigated. There after
the area became known as the Embarrass River Valley. When the Finnish
immigrants who had begun settling during the late 1800's-early 1900's,
incorporated the area as a township in 1905, the name Embarrass was
formalized.

Elsewhere in Minnesota, Babbitt dropped to -51, and Littlefork was at -49
early yesterday morning.
