ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Saturday March 8, 2008
===================================================================
ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's
safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even small
projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours prior to
digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to
your neighborhood.

...A Pretty Snow...

Most folks across North and Central Alabama had a pretty snow this
morning. One that happened on a weekend first (most folks got to stay
home.) One that didn't cause widespread road problems (although there
were a good number of accidents.) One that will be gone quickly. It
had a nice beat and you could dance to it.

BIG STORM: This storm system has been a dynamic one,
producing inclement weather across a wide area. In fact today, in
addition to the snows across the Ohio Valley and Southeast, it is
responsible for severe weather in the mid-Atlantic states. A tornado
watch was in effect for SE Virginia and eastern North Carolina earlier.

BIG SNOWS: While most of Alabama got by with a dusting
to one inch of snow, areas to the west and north got a lot more. In
Mississippi, Tupelo picked up 2.5 inches, Corinth 4.5 inches. In
Tennessee, one of the highest amounts was at the NWS Memphis, where
7.2 inches fell. Seven inches fell in Tunica in Mississippi. Two to
four inches fell across the Delta region of Mississippi with a lot of
reports of thundersnow. Thirteen inches of snow was reported at
Goshen in Oldham County, Kentucky (in the Louisville area.) Twelve
inches fell at Columbus OH. The big winner was Fox in Stone County,
Arkansas, where 18 inches was reported.

QUIETER WEATHER: We will now go into a fairly benign
pattern for the next several days. Skies should gradually clear
across the area this afternoon. Temperatures will drop into the upper
20s tonight making for a chilly start. Don't forget to set your
clocks ahead an hour before retiring tonight as Daylight Saving Time
begins at 2 a.m. local time. Tomorrow looks like a very nice day with
lots of sunshine and temperatures in the upper 50s. A weak front will
drift down into Alabama Monday night, bringing a few showers along
with it. The front will wash out quickly and mild conditions will
prevail on Wednesday. By Thursday, a good return flow off the Gulf
Mexico will be in progress and a low will develop to our west. The
low will cross the state from southwest to northeast Thursday night,
bringing rain and storms. Strong storms could occur south of the low
track. Friday will feature wraparound showers, but it will not be
cold enough for any wintry precipitation.

THE 1998 ELBA FLOOD: The history of the town of Elba in
South Alabama is inextricably tied to floods. In 1998, three days of
heavy rain sent floodwaters from Beaver Dam Creek churning through the
small South Alabama town of Elba as a levee gave way.. 5 people died
across South Alabama from the flooding. Two thousand of the town's
four thousand residents had to evacuate as the downtown area was under
6 feet of water. Very cold weather would follow the flooding just
three days later with temperatures in the area dropping into the
middle 20s.

It was the third flood in the small town in eight
years. In 1990, the town was inundated when a levee on the Pea River
broke, with only rooftops poking through a sea of floodwaters. That
levee was reinforced by the Corps of Engineers after the 1990 flood.
The 1998 flood happened suddenly with little warning, so even though
the flood crest was less than during the 1990 flood, the 1998 flood
caused more damage. With more warning, people had time to move their
belongings to higher ground in the 1990 flood.

...Topsy Turvey!...

The Red Diamond Vulcan Cup soccer tournament is in the
Magic City this weekend. This fabulous event brings 6,000 players,
coaches, fans and parents to Birmingham for top level competition.
Sorry about the weather folks. Not a great day to be outdoors. Our
topsy-turvy March weather continues…

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO: We were starting to pay attention to
model output that showed an Arctic airmass and a powerful low pressure
system in the Gulf of Mexico four days out. The storm would go onto
become one of historic proportions, known as the Storm of the Century
or the March 1993 Superstorm. While nothing like that one, this storm
system has been an interesting one also.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME: Spring forward tonight. Don't
forget to set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed tonight
as we go back into Dsylight Saving Time early again this year under
the Congressional mandate.

A RAW DAY: It is hard to call a Saturday that has snow
involved "miserable," at least for snow lovers. By the time you read
this, Birmingham's snowless streak may have come to an end. It will
be mostly cloudy this morning with a cold northwest wind and a few
flakes exiting eastern sections. Skies will clear later this morning,
but temps will have a hard time getting out of the 30s despite the
sunshine. That's certainly qualifies as raw. By tomorrow morning
lows will be in the upper 20s.

BETTER TOMORROW: After that cold start tomorrow, things
will warm up nicely into the upper 50s by afternoon. That will signal
the beginning of a warm up that will continue into most of next week.
By early in the week, another upper level disturbance will be
meandering our way from Texas. It will bring a chance of showers on
Tuesday and Tuesday night as it heads east. Temperatures will be warm
enough to support all rain. High pressure will move across the area
on Wednesday, with fine weather expected. By Thursday, a stronger and
more interesting system will move our way, spinning up a complex low
pressure system. We should get rain and storms, but places like
Memphis might get another good snowstorm. North Alabama could be on
the borderline again as the system lifts out and colder air fills in
behind it.

ON THIS DATE IN 1909: Brinkley, Arkansas was directly in
the path of an F4 tornado during the evening hours. The twister
destroyed eight hundred buildings and homes in the town. Several
entire families were killed. Forty nine total fatalities were
attributed to the twister along its fifteen mile path. Injuries
numbered over six hundred. At least six other major tornadoes touched
down in Arkansas that day, killing an additional eighteen people. I
drove from Little Rock to Alexandria, Louisiana on Thursday night,
taking mostly back roads, passing through little towns like Hope and
Evening Shade. J.B. commented on the phone that those places had all
been hit by famous tornadoes. I told him that I think every town in
Arkansas has been hit by a major tornado. It is definitely part of
Dixie Tornado Alley.

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Friday March 7, 2008

====================================================
ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours prior
to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

Visit http://www.al1call.com for more information.
====================================================

SNOW STARTS LATE TONIGHT: I am convinced more than ever that the
prospects of snow is far more exciting in Alabama than any college
football game, including the Alabama/Auburn game.

To our west, very heavy snow has fallen across parts of Arkansas. The
overall storm system is moving east and rain is expected to change to
snow across North Alabama later tonight with some flurries deep into
Central Alabama by tomorrow morning.
Here is a word-by-word analysis that James Spann posted on the ABC
33/40 blog this afternoon:

"Around 1 inch of snow for the I-20 corridor, including Birmingham,
Tuscaloosa and Anniston. This will be mainly on grassy areas. The
roads will be wet, but travel problems not expected. 1 to 3 inches of
snow, mainly in grassy areas, along and north of US-278, which is from
Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden. There could be some icy spots on
bridges in this area late tonight, but the roads will most likely
remain only wet because of the relatively warm soil. The exception
could be some of the high terrain locations over NE Alabama, where a
few roads could become snow covered. A dusting of snow all the way
down to US-280 or from Demopolis to Selma to Montgomery to Opelika. No
travel problems along US-280. There could even be a little thundersnow
somewhere in all of this."

LITTLE ROCK: We picked Little Rock today because the NWS has been
busy as a snow blower issuing various Winter Storm Warnings and
Advisories and they were all timely. There was thundersnow at
Whitehall, Arkansas. Some other snow depths all in Arkansas:

2 inches at Pulaski, 12 miles west of Little Rock
9 inches, Paris
10 inches, Evening Shade and Booneville
15 inches, Mt. George

There were reports of numerous trees coming down because of the heavy
snow load.

Elsewhere, a possible tornado this morning near Tampa. A Tornado
Watch was in effect for much of North Florida this morning and
extended south to Central Florida this afternoon. The winter weather
problem is going to affect a vast zone from here in the South
northeastward through Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and even into
Western New York State. As much as 6 to 12 inches expected in
Louisville and about 6 inches in Memphis.

GRAVITY WAVE: A vast rain area across Alabama this morning with
everybody getting rain and some people over 1 inch. After the rain
moved on to the east, a gravity wave set up causing high wind after
the rain stops. Over North Chilton County, numerous trees were
uprooted and some structural damage to buildings.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I did not hear thunder last night, but
my little pal did. Sometimes I think Molly can hear thunder as far
away as Mobile. At some point during the night, she crawled out of her
warm spot on our king-sized bed, went into the large clothes closet
and backed into a corner. I finally found her with only her head
sticking out from under the clothing. Life goes on.....
